If anyone figures out how to add this to Steam without the launcher, let me know.

Why anytime you post shit like this
It makes it sound like you WANT it to happen
:odell:
of course i don't WANT it to happen ... but i'm being realistic here :p

i mean, if they were going to release it on steam (and everything else) - they would've said it by now ... but they've been suspiciously quiet about that

oh, and also their first published game went egsclusive (Arise)

Looking back, Epic mad
Anxiously waiting for Dying Light 2 news....

So no Steam Controller?
I got it working after a bit. I'm not sure what caused my issues, maybe the game is funny with inputs. You do have to add the launcher to Steam, then launch the game from there.

I hope you're right, but I don't think so. My guess is that Epic will go for several long awaited AA(A) games, including Dying Light 2.
Yes and no.
I see Dying Light 2 happening as well and also expect some new deals to be announced. Deals that were made 4-6 months ago.
But I expect less new negotiations for AAA games being fruitful for epic this year. I'm biased and probably wrong, but I think RDR 2, Halo:MCC and Fallen Order are sending the message that people rather do not want to use the EGS.

Dying Light 1 is on GOG mind you.

If they get 2 as well it'd be great. Might get it on there...assuming I get regional pricing on there at least :v
I like the concept of a dystopia, but the zombies are a turn off for me tbh.

2 million people buying BL3 on EGS are proving otherwise. I don't want to sound too negative, but the shit loads of free games that Epic has been throwing around seems to turn many people into EGS fans. While free games are definitely a pro-consumer way to promote a store, Epic's exclusivity deals and stance against user reviews and store wide sales are being established as well when EGS becomes successful.

I didn't say that EGS is going to die off. It won't, it will stay and people will be using it. But that was never my problem with EGS, my problem is about third party exclusivity and Tim trying to rewrite how the PC market works.
Let other people use it, I really don't care. Tim lost me as a potential costumer and he is not getting me back. Not even with free stuff.

Big Publishers are certainly more clever than just looking at unfiltered sale numbers.
2 million BL3 copies sounds impressive and certainly is a good argument, but BL3 was being pushed beyond reason. The retail PC version was 50% off here in Europe before the game even released (Two for one), there is a retail PC box version, the game was available through cdkeys and co., "Influencers" were paid above average to promote the game, PR was through the roof.
Especially that 50% discount must be something that "decision" makers know about and factor in.

I think publishers see, what I see: Yes, you can force sales through EGS. That's not a big surprise. But it's not a legitimate long term strategy and not worth the risk without extra cash from Epic. It's viable for smaller productions and indy devs. It's guaranteed sales, but without much potential to really grow. But even that relies on bribes and epic will not keep this up forever.

Egsculsivity is dead the moment epic stops buying stuff and then it's back to being irrelevant. That's my prediction,

Basically this. Raw figures for Borderlands 3 are probably not where they needed to be, frankly. You also have to factor in that we don't even know how top-loaded sales are on EGS. Part of what makes Steam so successful is discoverability and games selling well long into their second, third, and even fourth years. The Witcher 3 is a prime example of that. Can we concieve of any game having such enduring success on EGS even six months after release? Not really - the store is a trashfire. It has no sense of community, no reason for anyone to even boot it up unless they want to play a game they own or saw on another site that something interesting is happening there. Meanwhile, Steam is pretty much everyone's de facto client still and people rely on it for a lot more than just downloading and launching their games.

All that Epic has proven is that there are a lot of impulsive buyers who will happily not use Steam to buy a game they want in the first month. If anything changes as a result of their actions, it is publishers will launch their game on their own launcher day 1, then release on Steam between 1-6 months later. Take 2 probably has a lot of data, both from RDR2 and Borderlands 3, about how high profile games (whose predecessors have sold well in excess of 15m) sell without being on Steam, and can probably pinpoint the perfect timeframe with which to go to Steam after launch. I expect other AAAs to follow in that regard, whether that be day 1 on their own launcher or letting Epic pay them for a month or two of exclusivity.

And regardless, Epic's not going to keep this up forever. There is the "long game" and setting money on fire. Fortnite is slumping, and we don't know where it will level out, so that trove of infinite money just got a whole lot less infinite. In addition, Epic has, to a degree, read the market wrong and EGS hasn't supplanted Steam in any meaningful way. They haven't even moved the needle on the kinds of cuts other stores take. By its own criteria ("change the industry", "developers will decide who wins", "let's not devalue games"), one year in it is a failure. Anyone with even a modicum of financial sense knows there are better ways to spend that money.

I hope you're both right. Big publishers like EA and MS speaking out loud how the want to give us a choice where to buy our games gives me lots of hope as well. My worries are rather how much damage Epic does to pc gaming before they stop money hatting and devaluating games. In combination with the success of game pass, big companies are getting more and more control over pc gaming.

Well I mean, he's not wrong when he points out that those terms are dishonest.
What Epic does is not illegal, it's not even in a grey area.
It's just terribly annoying and, in my opinion, incredibly disruptive of the PC platform, in a very bad way.

Unrelated to Epic, there's what Sweeney himself says, which is usually very similar in tone (and truthfulness) to Trump.
At least Timmy has a better grammar!

Where is this "It's not illegal" nonsense coming from again? Nobody ever said it's illegal, at least nobody with a functioning brain and especially nobody on this forum.
It's just shit practice for us consumers and people therefore use negative terms to describe it, like bribing. That's fair enough and there is nothing dishonest about that.

He says while refering to the 30% cut as taxes at the same time :thinking-blob:
That's a very good point to make imo

I'm confused: is the Epic Games Store an "open service", like timmy keeps saying?
Can any game launch there?

I thought only a handful, especially those who agree not to launch on a competing service (for up to a year), were allowed on the platform...

Not that I particularly care.
He can keep saying all he wants, give away all the games in the world, I still won't ever (and yeah, I usually hesitate to say never, but I'll say it: never) buy a single game at his platform.

In the context of "store-locked social features", by "open services" he probably just means "I don't want to bother with forums, profiles, activity feeds and all that shit, people should just use Discord, reddit, imgur and all that stuff for their social gaming needs so I don't have to compete with Steam properly goddangnabit"

The only reason I claim the EGS freebies is because I already had to install the damn thing for a few reviews. That being the case, I might as well take the free games.

I'm excited to play Yooka Laylee.

It's Tim Sweeney. You can safely expect his tweets will be full of crap while trying to defend his sub par digital store and his bullshit "competition" practices.
He is an asshole demonstrating how an asshole tweets.
Nothing more. Nothing less.

Most of them have been DRM free so far, so you'd only need the client for downloading the data.
Sadly, it's not the case with Yooka.

I mean, 0% of 2 million players isn't 0 players without decimals in that stat. I assume that's why the % was used.

It can be like less than 18k people, right? Or would it mean you have to round up to 1% rather than down to 0%?

Less than 10k people in that case, to be lower than 0.5% so that it rounds down to 0%. Enough to "have players".
Thank you for clarifying, yes that does not mean 0 players entirely.

The amount of active players is low enough that it is within our margin of error, making the precise amount unclear, so I just said "close to 0%". It is somewhere between 0% and 4% of the estimated 2M owners. Still plenty of players for the game to keep chugging, but significantly below what I would expect for the game. For reference, we estimate the XBOX version of the game to be around 2.8M owners with 17% active. We also detected a significant increase in popularity (derived from owners and active players) over the Holiday break:

We estimate the PlayStation version to be around 3.4M owners with 16% active:

Tim keeps giving, lol. So many goalposts and so much bullshit. Now developing and offering features and services is a bad thing because it's store-locked... Lol?

How is it locked anyway, there are apis for everything, he has a steam login for stuff, if he wants to put "steam user rating" on his store pages he probably can.

Same for linking to the Steam forums or telling people for controller features you can add our games as a non-Steam game on that awesome platform.

But clearly those are not things he wants to do, not if he can't do it without advertising Steam and admitting he's wrong about all of his bullshit yet.

As if third party social services don't have to have profit/costs covered in some way too, discord has a store and for-sale features and shit.

So Free games are the default now, guess Timmy dosn´t want to sell games anymore, this shit gonna backfire hard on the face of indie devs, teaching a whole generation of kids to wait for something to be free gonna put everybody on the red lol.

Thank you for the additional information. The comparisons between platforms helps to add a lot of context. It will be really interesting to see what happens when the Steam version launches.

With my "amazing" powers of prediction I see a lot of editorials, blog posts and angry tweets about the entitled consumers who don't want to pay for their games. I wonder when they got that expectation that games are free? :p

This is my concern as well. Despite speaking out against devaluating games, Epic is doing it more than any store wide sale could have done. But it seems everything is fine to make their store successful, no matter what the consequences are.

Yep. When I see the all-time low price of former EGS exclusives (which includes the additional $10 off) via Augmented Steam, I refuse to pay more than that all-time low for a year late release. I know the price is lower than the discount dev/publisher set because of the coupon. Those coupons actually devalue EGS games for me even once they release on other stores.

Also, can't wait for the first salty devs when their games fail once they get their Steam release. Not sure why but I kinda think Rebel Galaxy Outlaw could be such a game.
