Ys VIII full changelog from God Durante
GRAPHICS/PERFORMANCE

  • Arbitrary main rendering resolution enabled
  • Improved frame-pacing and animation sync accuracy at all framerates
  • Improved menu opening/closing behavior
  • Character and enemy animations now correctly timed at 100+ FPS
  • Support for high-refresh monitors and >60 Hz V-sync
  • Replaced ineffective anti-aliasing blur filter with high-quality screenspace AA
  • Bloom, refraction, and glare post-processing effects now scale with resolution
  • Minimap rendering resolution now adapts to rendering resolution, preventing pixelated map at high resolution
  • Greatly improved quality of menu backgrounds (replacing low-res screen capture)
  • Improved standard shadow filtering without performance loss, plus two new, higher quality filter options
  • Added option for rendering additional environment shadows
  • Added supersampling/subsampling option (which also affects secondary 3D rendering)
  • Improved shadow rendering performance by preventing unnecessary memory traffic
  • Fixed animation speed of HUD elements at >30 FPS (e.g. full health bar)
  • Improved the quality of volumetric lighting
  • Implemented HBAO+ ambient occlusion as alternative higher-quality SSAO option
  • Added a draw distance setting which applies to grass/clutter, monsters and NPCs
  • Implemented anisotropic filtering setting
  • Added high-quality texture pack (generated from original sources, partially with AI upsampling, and full mipmaps)
  • Character poses in the equip menu now update at >30 FPS

INPUT/UI

  • Improved camera mouse controls, replacing joystick emulation with direct 1:1 control
  • Movement keys are now individually bindable
  • Added keybinding for walking (slow movement) with keyboard/mouse controls
  • Changed default bindings to fit common usage by PC gamers

STABILITY

  • Fixed multiple video memory leaks
  • Fixed potential crash when switching between languages
  • Switched to 64-bit build to prevent address space fragmentation issues in long sessions
  • Improved render thread synchronization to prevent specific types of race condition crashes
  • Removed superfluous asset encryption

MISCELLANEOUS

  • Fixed unlocking of some achievements when playing with mouse/keyboard controls
  • Fixed several typos and dialogue/text issues throughout the game
  • Fixed slightly-too-low cloud save limit when using a very large number of saves

CO-OP MODE (Experimental)

  • 2-Player local co-op mode has been added

About coop mode:
  • Need to supply two Xinput controllers
  • You must have 2 or more characters in the party in order for the second player to join the game.
  • SP is shared
  • Second player does not receive the “AI cheats” (ie. AI controlled characters only take half damage, whereas second player in co-op mode will take the full amount of damage.)
  • Not officially supported and limited support will be available for troubleshooting

To enable co-op mode:
  • Open Steam libraries through the Steam client
  • Right-click on Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA, and click “Properties”
  • Click “Set Launch Options”
  • Input “--coop” into the parameter and click “OK.”
  • Launch the game
  • Press “Start” on the second controller to enable second player

Props for all you and your team at PH3's efforts

I got no Reddit account so I'd like to ask some questions from ehre if that's OK
1- Would you be interested in working on porting older PC and console games from the 1990s and 2000s?
2- Name....10 games from the past 25 years you would like to see get ported to PC
3- Have you attempted to blackmailconvince Rising Star Games to work on the PC port of Deadly Premonition?

Only played three Ys games, so I won’t buy 8 now, but a huge thank to everyone involved.

Holy shit, I was hoping that NISA would give enough of a shit to ask PH3 to fix Ys VIII while they were at it but I never realistically expected it to happen. This is basically a best case scenario. I almost regret playing the game a few months ago. Almost because now I have an excuse to replay it!

Also, I didn't catch the stream, did they address why the CSIII port is coming so late?

Did you cancel your subscription?
Sorry for the late reply.
I don't have any credit card info, so I guess the sub is cancelled...
I'm actually happy with the pricing in my region. The latest Romance of the Three Kingdoms launched without regional pricing and I was kinda expecting the same for Atelier. Here's hoping that Koei doesn't 'fix' it.

Anyway, I think I will just buy Ayesha for now. Still have to play the Arland series i bought last year
Same situation with me in India.

Perhaps I should play a Ys game one of these days. Or Trails.
Start with Oath in Felghana. Shortest among the Steam available Ys games and among the best ones. Will give you a taste of what you can expect in other Ys games.

Ys can be played in pretty much any order. VIII wouldn't be a terrible a starting point.

You want to start Trails with Trails in the Sky First Chapter and keep playing them in the order they were made in.
I heavily recommend against skipping any of the games.
Trails FC -> Trails SC -> Trails 3rd -> Zero no Kiseki/Trails from Azure -> Ao no Kiseki -> Cold Steel 1 -> Cold Steel 2 -> Cold Steel 3.
Zero and Ao are only available as fan translations for now, but you can worry about that after you've finished the TitS trilogy.

For Legend of Heroes on Steam, start with Trails in the Sky. There are 3 games, so you'll want the First Chapter.

For Ys...that's tricky
Either Ys 1 and 2 or Ys 3: Oath in Felghana
Ys 1 and 2 use a simple bump combat system where you damage enemies by bumping into them. If you're down with simple combat system like that you may enjoy 1 and 2, else go into Ys 3 since it utilizes an overhead view and the combat is simple but the game has a nice sense of progression.

Man, such great news to see Ys VIII getting proper patches, and CS III done by PH3 as well.
I am still miffed it took close to 1.5 years for Lacrimosa of Dana to get a proper port on PC, but I'll gladly eat all the crow in the world for seeing it done. So glad to get such luxury features such as mipmaps without relying on mods and 3rd party tools.

And will purchase CS III on day one to support PH3 at the very least.

Fuck, I can't wait to replay Ys VIII with a solid 60fps, shadows on everything, unlimited draw distance and no crashing! I'm almost more hype about the port finally being on par with CSI-II than I am about CSIII lol. The state of the port was such a huge bummer to me when I finally played it a few months ago, even more so than the localization since I honestly couldn't really see anything blatantly wrong with the redone loc.

I just realized though. That means I only have 2 months to get through CSII NG+ for those black files or whatever and finish the achievements. Plenty of time but after 70 hours I feel like I'm still only just scratching the surface of Witcher 3 so uh... yeah lol.

They finally fixed the screenshot uploader thing, I'm pretty sure it's been broken for me for at least a year.

Steam Client Beta - January 17, 2020
17 JAN @ 11:55PM - SLOUKEN
The Steam Client Beta has been updated with the following changes:\

General
  • Fixed "Open the screenshot uploader after closing a game if screenshots were taken" setting not being honored in some cases
Library
  • Fixed the "View Additional Artwork" button not working correctly for some soundtracks.
  • Fixed "New to Library" banner appearing on not particularly new games that had been recently installed but never played
  • Fixed some partner event summaries not rendering properly in the activity feed and What's New section
  • Added [h2] and [h3] rendering for partner events and announcements
  • Fixed a case where changes to game collections were not reflected in Big Picture Mode.

It's a really good channel who makes indepth reviews of niche and older games.

Highly recommended if you are into those kinds of games.

Here's his list of Ys game reviews

Hey Durante ,

I can't load my save game in the most recent patch because "there's DLC not installed that's used in the save game" or some such error message. I did use the HQ texture pack DLC, could that be the culprit?

edit:
just remembered, that I seemed to have lots more DLC options in the game than what Steam showed me (without actually buying anything). Maybe a quirk in how NISA set up DLC before this patch. Anyway, I went ahead and bought all remaining DLCS and that fixed the issue.
Seeing how PH3 fixed this game, I hope they get some share from the revenue of Ys VIII from Steam

Ys games are all standalone so any. Oath in Felghana, Origin, and VIII are the best ones to start with.

Ys Origin is the best place to start
Give Ys I+II a try. Can't hate on the bump system!
Hey, thanks all! :face-throwing-a-kiss:

I'll definitely check'em out.

My first experience of the Steam Controller with 4 hours of Atelier Firis:

The controller itself is passable, the right pad might be good for consolized strategy games but I miss the right thumbstick for easy controls of the camera angle. The right pad isn't really that great for changing the camera constantly like in Ateliers case.
The left dpad is sometimes too hard to click and othertimes it is not apart enough to count a direction upwards instead of sideways. I constantly go sideways or up/down when I wanted the opposite because the pad is too big.

A long time back Durante told me the order to play the games but I got carried away with other games. So Nabs, help me out here, where do I start?

For Trails, start with Trails in the Sky -> Trails in the Sky SC (which means Second Chapter) -> Trails in the Sky the 3rd

For Ys it's honestly fine in whatever order, even Ys VIII would be alright to start. The only downside with starting with 8 would be that it would be hard to go back to Seven and Celceta (remake of Ys 4) , which use the same gameplay template but are much less refined.

Ys I&II are still really fine games as well and are the 2 games that use the bump combat system, which sounds weird but is a lot of fun in practice.

And then you have Origin (prequel to 1 & 2), Oath in Felghana (remake of Ys 3) and Ark of Napishtim (remake of Ys 6) which also share a common gameplay template (my favorite one of all them with the exception of maybe 8 tbh). Napishtim is the first game that used this template and the roughest, so it's a bit harder to go back to it after having played the other 2, but still fine.

I only recommend playing 7 after 6 because of some story/character overlap but even that is mostly just not a big deal. And some say you should only play Origin after I&2, which is probably a good idea to catch references and stuff, but also not really a big deal.

Basically play in whatever order you want :p
For reference, release Order was I & II, Napishtim (6), Felghana (3), Origin, Seven, Celceta (4), VIII iirc.

I completely missed the part where NISA announced that ToCS 3 is also coming to GOG. It just keeps getting better and better.

What's eplison8?

Also I guess this mean that PC will keep on being the best place to play Falcom games and thus Falcom's PC legacy keeps on living. I thought CS3 might have been the end of it

Isn't that just one of the "policies" with Falcom games, were a DRM free version has to be a thing?

I had no idea Falcom had this as a policy. Yeah, with this in mind a GOG version was to be expected I suppose.

Great to see it anyway
