Regarding FFXIII and IX i have to strongly disagree.
XIII's genocide is something that exists within the plot but you don't see anything of it. It's something you are being told happens but that you never actually get to see. Apart from that, the game often has a strongly upbeat or outright melodramatic atmosphere. Similar with FFIX which is more of a magical fairytale for the most part.

FFVII on the other hand has some real dark moments actually in game, like the entire Shinra Massacre, Cloud becoming a mentally disabled cripple in a wheelchair or that monster scare in the mako reactor flashback.

As well as tons of creepy music

I'd definitely say it's the darkest games in the mainline series.

It's definitely without a doubt that VII owes some of its popularity to nostalgia, but i think to the largest degree it's also well deserved.
Game is pretty strong on all aspects from Music to Story, and even the combat, if a bit simplistic, feels incredibly satisfying thanks to cool visual- and soundeffects
Agree to to disagree on all counts. Sorry friend. The OG FFVII is literally the "ok boomer" of Video Games to me. The FFVII I played in 2015 (or whenever PS4 Version launched,) was laughable in presentation and the constant overhype from older fans did it no favors. It doesn't hold up. And it's not even about graphics, because FFIX on the same console had masterful cutscene direction by comparison. No floppy tits CGI. No super awkward "flying" (seriously wtf when Sephiroth just started floating, turned 45 degrees on the dot, and started flying out of the mansion lol???)

But hey, like I said, maybe the remake fixes FF VII for me.

To address your criticisms;

- You have forgotten the actual happenings of Final Fantasy XIII haven't you? You literally start FFXIII during "the purge" and control active belligerents. This "purge" persists for the entirety of the game, in the background and foreground. Do you remember taking Hope back to his father?

- That FFIX is fairy-tale like in it's plot progression and ultimately it's resolution, is not sufficient cause to deny the inherent darkness of it's underlying themes. It's not even relevant really. Dark fairy-tales exist. That the game ends on a happy note does not negate the existential crisis we're forced to ponder with Vivi, Zidane, and Kuja.
========

Anywho I have a bad habit of really lighting into fellow FF-fans, because older FF fans are the thing I hate most about the series unironically (despite being an older fan myself). I just cannot stand how much they whine about how things used to be. How much better they think it would be if we went backwards. Etc... The thing I love most about FF as a brand is that it keeps reinventing itself and changing. That it tries to maintain it's status as a large AAA-flagship in both presentation and game-design, especially in these days when JRPG's are no longer front-and-center.

That said, you're a good friend Hektor and I don't really wanna go to war with you over FF lol.

My specs are just good enough for recommended, but they are at the edge of being not at recommended.

Ampere can't come fast enough, gonna upgrade my whole computer when Ampere is out, well as long as I find the upgrade the 3080 will be from my 1080 good enough.

However, I play at 1080p with gsync so in that sense my specs are good enough for recommended.

FF6's intro really sets the mood and has some pretty dark moments such as
Kefka murdering everyone in the castle including Cyan's family

...Then there's Celes' attempted suicide and that really struck me when I first played it on PSOne

Not just the suicide, but the uncensored torture as well. Though I'm not 100% sure the torture scene made it outside of Japan? The only western copy of FFVI I own is the Steam one and I haven't played it yet as I'm waiting for the Sprite rework mods which to my knowledge are still WIP.

Nobody ever really debates the quality of VI though. It's the perfect ending to the SNES gen of FF, almost universally praised by new and old fans alike.

Ok my better judgment tells me not to step into all of that, but it's friday so let's err anyhow ... didn't you kinda miss the boat with this one? I'd agree that FF7 does not hold up well ... but the context of the time it existed in matters a lot. I have great memories of it in the day. Can't play it at all now. It's wonky as hell. There's lots of old games like that, where if you miss the time it belonged in, you can't get back that context.

Friends can go to war too, and on the battlefield, i never hold back.

Agree to to disagree on all counts.
Yea, i could not possible disagree harder with you on most of your post.
FFIX is my second favorite mainline title, but i would consider it the most up-beat game of them all for a start, even if it has some sad moments.
I think we just have very different definitions of what constitutes as dark, because for me, it's strongly a matter of atmosphere and not just plot and lore.

100% not denying this possibility at all. That is why I'm so open and excited for the remake. Not excited enough to waste money on PS4 copy mind you, I'll wait for PC Version. Being able to compare it in a more modern way will really help me to judge at least the main story beats better. (i hope.)

FF7 was shit even when it came out.

Final Fantasy ranking :

FF6
FF14
FF11
FF12

Rest is trash and not even worth talking about.
I can get behind the 7 was never good jokes, but trashing even 9 is unkind. That game had a ton of heart.

Speaking of 7, I dearly wish they'd expanded on the space aspect. I love the sci-fi side of that game and having an orbit-capable rocket just lying around hinted at a ton more that the original never really got into if I recall correctly.

Well for my modern Playstation 1-era jones I wound up going with Lost In Vivo.

Not quite the sandbox/adventure I was looking for but it's been on my Wishlist forever as I heard it had strong Silent Hill vibes.

Based on the above screenshot I just took, I believe I have chosen wisely.

Just completed Half-Life, used a trainer to get through the game quickly. Great game, suprisingly playable despite it's age. Now I have completed HL, HL2, E1 and E2.

Will do Destiny 2 Shadowkeep campaign missions before doing Black Mesa.

FF7 was my first FF and my favorite and I only ever finished 7 and 13 and I could never get into FF3/6 at all. But I'm not interested in FF7 remake (would feel different if it actually was the whole game). Chrono Trigger is better than all of em tho.

God I want a new version of FFT that is exactly the PS1 version except turns go by much, much faster.

My main problem with the PSP version & the Mobile version is they removed the flavor text from using abilities and you sort of only notice it missing because its this like little nagging thing like something is a little bit off

I just went out of my way to try and find them, I know or at least vaguely remember their being more quotes for other abilities but they really added in more life to the game so I have no idea why they removed the shit

Plus it was random/didnt happen all the time at all so it felt really cool when it did happen

This is some trivial info, but here's a list of quotes that are said
randomly when spells are cast. If I'm missing anything, or anything here is
wrong, please mail me and let me know.

New: Added a version number, fixed some quotes, added a few notes, and wrote
who uses specific types of magic. If another skill name appears in the
"used by" box in brackets, it means that those spells are within a
specific command. (Like "Holy Sword" skills are also included in
Orlandu's "All Swordskill" command.)

The most anticipated video game of the last decade finally releases in March 2020, but it won't be playable on any of the games consoles. Half Life: Alyx is only playable using virtual reality kit, its developers Valve have created a unique experience, a full length blockbuster video game in VR. The Half Life franchise is one of the biggest and most influential in videogame history, releasing this latest edition as a VR only title will likely reinvigorate the virtual reality industry and for many act as a reason to buy a VR headset. We gained access to Valve's secretive studio in Seattle interviewing key development personnel as well as spending a considerable amount of time playing the game and experiencing the new technology that has been created to bring the title to life.

EDIT - - So this didn't happen - guess they switched the episodes lol

Well i make minimum, so that's a thing. Doom 2016 ran pretty good on my machine, so i expect this to play okay. Of course by the time i pick this up, i'll likely have a new machine

Used the occasion to play the entirety of Superhot (not hard) and start and drop Rock of Age 1 (I guess I liked the humor but that's it).
Let's launch Borderlands 2 ! Yeah, I'm in a backlog mood.

Did they change the Xen level designs in Black Mesa from the beta a few weeks ago at all? Xen felt about twice as long as it should have been and I nearly quit when they kept throwing plug this power cable into a power outlet puzzles at me over and over again. I just powered through because I was doing a Half Life series replay.

Wait, didn't that RaveofRavendale keep complaining about steam and about another indieapocalypse?
IIRC he did complain about how some companies such as PlayWay abused the system of "new releases" by changing constantly their release date in order to be in "upcoming soon" as much as they can, which is true and hurts other games but also said there's no easy solution to that which is also true.

He also praised Gamepass as a service cause' it boosted the popularity of Descenders in the Xbox ecosystem, which again, is also true. I don't remember him complaining about another Indieapocalypse in a veeeery long time.

Yes, I think the team got a lot of feedback and re-adjusted Xen in order to make it more fun or less dense.

Wait, didn't that RaveofRavendale keep complaining about steam and about another indieapocalypse?
The last big issue that I think he complained about Steam was the overall average amount that devs are making off Steam.

He does a lot of numbers stuff, which make sense at times but also feel off.

I think he is one of the few people from an indie publisher that shares data about stuff (since you might normally only see that from individual indie devs)

Man, I missed to renew my Humble sub and now I gotta pay $14.99 or more to get those games. I just wanted one Planet Coaster :(

Since the change of formula from Humble Monthly to Humble Choice, there are a lot less sell offers on the "Group Buys" forum on Steam.

Plus, because people can be on the classic tier without telling it, I have seen posts of people selling 3 games for the price of the classic tier, without acknowledging it, and justifying their sell offers because they were allegedly on the most expensive tiers. The posts have been deleted by the moderators of the "Group Buys" forum, because the group is not made to make a profit from others. However, one scalper found 3 customers before his post was deleted.

Basically, selling Pedro, Planet Coaster and F1 for 11€, and secretly keeping the 7 others games for free:

Sad! It was better with the previous formula.

Welp, I only want Turok from the bundle.
Nothing to play before Ori 2 :cryblob:
Maybe I should start Black Mesa before Alyx, just so I can wait for the release and still not buy the Index because it's too expensive. :smart-thinking-blob:

Here's hoping they're energized enough to make a new traditional Half-Life. I don't know when will I be able to borrow my friends VR set to play Alyx.
The only reason Alyx exists is because of VR and as long as the reception to the game is great, HL3 will without a doubt be VR only.

They care more about VR headset adoption and getting people to start thinking about VR than they do about Alyx software sales, otherwise they wouldn't have given Alyx away for free to Index owners.

I know about that , but maybe they'll find other reasons to build HL3 as a traditional game, like using it to advance certain aspects of their engine. I guess I'm an "always look on the bright side of life" kind of guy.

That said, I'd also love if they kept doing other VR games of this level.

In the last two weeks I finished Black Mesa (Xen is amazingly well-crafted), Opposing Force, Blueshift and HL 2 (100% achievements).
Currently playing the Episodes. Me and my Quest will be ready for Alyx.
And I am done. Waited a few days to see the end of Episode 2 which still hits like a truck. All them feels...

I could not finish Episode 2 with 100 % achievements as I missed some stupid ant lion grubs. Cba returning to those caves.
