Well too me there are two roads from everything Ive heard that Valve has talked about:
- Alyx being a hit which will lead to more HL games in the future, surely a HL3, but it will be VR only
- Alyx not being a hit, no more HL games
Valve knows they would have made bank on making Alyx a flatscreen game, but they didn't, so I can't see why they would make HL3 for flatscreen if Alyx being a VR game is a hit.
Also, just to make it clear, Im not saying I don't want a flatscreen HL3, I would play the shit out of a flatscreen HL3, I love both flatscreen gaming and VR gaming, it's just that there are nothing that points towards HL3 being a flatscreen game. When it has taken 13 years for Valve to make a new HL game it it is in VR only, I don't see HL3 being for flatscreen.

Alyx isn't a spin off according to Valve though. It's the next part of the HL story and something in the game also makes it clear people need to have finished Episode 2 according to Valve.
According to Alanah Pearce, some people at Valve also refers to Alyx as "Half-Life 3".

I try not to be an exclusionary prick about this stuff, but a large swath of our juniors exist here solely to pop-up when things are handed out for free and it irks me every-time without fail. Nothing against the ones who do contribute and eventually go on to become full members mind you.
Barring some forum feature or administrative solution, I think I'll resort to vetting by PM's going forward. Just post a list of what I have and provide codes on a first-come basis to those who actually participate in our threads.

Not having a number on it doesn't make it an spin-off, it's an story based on the main time-line that will connect not only with Half-Life 2 but also future elements. Alyx is perfectly another episode of the Half-Life time-line, it's not like some of the comics based on different parts of the world after the invasion but following Vance steps.

The only reason Valve didn't call it 3 is because you don't play as Freeman. This is Alyx's story and she isn't a silent protagonist. The game is much slower too and not your typical run n gun Half-Life game. Although that 3rd video they uploaded looked kinda fast and intense.
They'll save 3 for 10-15 years from now. And it will most likely be a Source 3 game lol. This VR game is like a safety net for them. If people hate the game and its not received well they always have 3 to fall back on later. If people love it they'll make 3 much sooner and it will probably be a VR game just like Alyx.

Currently playing through Kentucky Route Zero, or at least trying to because the tone and way the game is set up isn't exactly captivating me. Doesn't help that the writing feels pretentious and there's barely any gameplay...

Mor i absolutely get what you mean , but deep down its still VR-only project to push the medium (of VR further) and its not a direct continuations
I didnt mean the "spinoff" in the bad way like ubisoft does (smaller experimental thing) , but just that its not the the direct continuation of the mainline, but more of a filling the blanks as different character.
In the end i mostly just said that to disagree with fanto (not to trigger you) about his statement that "if Alyx succeeds HL3 will be VRonly aswell".
Which i dooubt ,especially with all the memes about it.
(not sure if i make sense here , bit sleep deprived right now)
