Hmm, can't find a video of the Mage's Tale with subtitles on. I'm wary of VR games handling of that sort of things. The Lab for example was beyond stupid in that department. You had to look at your hands or something ridiculous, can't remember exactly.

Exanima 0.8 is out, and it's our biggest update yet. The thaumaturgy system is here, the largest content addition to date, new creatures, new features and many improvements.

We do still have some big items on our roadmap, like multiplayer and to a lesser extent ranged combat, but none of that is needed to finally start making Exanima feel like a complete game with purpose and structure, to take advantage of the foundations we've been building and improving.

I feel like this is one of the things HL:A actually did better than many other VR games. They have several larger objects where you need to use both hands to move them, which gives them more of a sense of weight.
Oh Yeah. HL:A has raised the bar for most things in VR. I find it the clearest looking VR game. Im using Vive controllers and have a bit of a problem with holding the triggers down for any length of time (gives me cramps) so for me grabbing stuff involves a lot of dropping it accidentally which is when large things like the barrels start to seem a bit weightless and sort of 'float' away.

Ive dropped so many grenades at my feet after priming them its ridiculous.

Despite being on game pass, Ori 2 has 21,7k Steam user reviews and it hasn't been out for a month while Ori has been out since march 2015 and has 33,7k user reviews (not on sale anymore) and Definitive Edition which has been out since april 2016 has 24,4k user reviews and owners of the original got the DE for free.

It's safe to say that MS releasing games on Steam is a success and not doing it is leaving millions of money on the table.

The more I play stuff on console, the more I realize what a pain in the ass it is and how dire the lack of digital refunds is. I keep getting burned by sloppy ports on Switch! I need to remind myself: when in doubt, play on PC.

The more I play stuff on console, the more I realize what a pain in the ass it is and how dire the lack of digital refunds is. I keep getting burned by sloppy ports on Switch! I need to remind myself: when in doubt, play on PC.
Refunds are nice, I ended up buying 2 early access games since I wanted to try them but just ended up refunding then since they didn't really have what I was looking for (I was in the mood for a Sim/management type game but they just were not it)

And out of Sony,MS, and Nintendo, Nintendo has by far the worst refund policy of all. If you are lucky Nintendo may (just may) consider giving you in store credit but even that will likely not happen. And right now Nintendo is currently being sued because of that.

Refunds are nice, I ended up buying 2 early access games since I wanted to try them but just ended up refunding then since they didn't really have what I was looking for (I was in the mood for a Sim/management type game but they just were not it)
Just out of curiosity, what have you been considering so far?

Agreed. I loved the first revelations, but couldn't motivate myself to finish the second. Such a boring and uninspired game.

I quite liked the RE Revelations titles, 1 more than 2, but I still quite enjoyed most of it. And then I also played surprising amounts of its "Raid mode".

Ugh, that's terrible, sorry to hear. :crying-face:

A friend of mine lost a CSGO knife worth $600 to a scammer recently because he was too impatient. He was severely disappointed of course, but took it surprisingly well and saw it as a learning experience.

Be wary out there!

Gotta say, Enhanced Edition of Silent Hill 2 looks fantastic for a game from 2002, from what I gather there's EE version of SH3 as well, maybe Konami should pay a bit to modders and just release these versions as HD collection on PC? One can dream.

about the physics in HLA: if you throw an object, how do you control the trajectory?

For instance, at the start, you can throw stuff at a cat or at a bird, and it seems that the object connects every time

My guess is that objects are magnetized, a bit like they are when you try to take an object and it automatically goes into your hand in the perfect position.
Could anybody clarify the VR physics of throwing stuff?

I can't say I've noticed any aim-assist when throwing. It does have some of the best throw mechanics (as in, figuring out when you wanted to let go, which many games struggle with) I've used on the Index controllers so far.

There's of course a lot of "auto-aim" when using the gravity gloves to pull stuff in, but not when throwing.

I was just about to reply this same thing - using Oculus CV1 it has the best throwing of any VR game I've played by a good margin. Things feel thrown with the trajectory and speed that I felt I threw.

What do you mean? Uusually games have a "grip" button and to throw something you perform an actual throwing motion and release that grip button (or actual gesture as with Index finger tracking) and based on the arc you were in the middle of doing, the speed with which you were performing it and the point at which you release, it gets thrown over. Like, Wii Sports bowling but accurate in 3D space with any angle rather than the specific allowed bowling range. Kind of. You can throw stuff behind you, toss them to the side, throw them overhead, underhand, juggle with them, whatever, same as irl kind of.

I wish that I knew about SteamRep before since I was also scammed out of a game, although in my case the game was only worth $5USD ($20USD but it would go on sale for $5USD every so often). I got the game for free since I pre-ordered Metal Gear Solid V TPP and I already had GZ in my library so I had a steam giftable copy. It was only after I got scammed that I checked on SteamRep that I saw that other people had also been scammed by this person.

Just out of curiosity, what have you been considering so far?
Do you mean what specific type of Sim/Management game? I want something that is very simple. Like one of those older Tycoon type games for all ages. I'm okay with some more complex stuff but I had been in the mood to play some stuff like Mall Tycoon 3, Ski Resort Extreme and stuff like that. They are very simple games (and while they may not look that good now) they do offer the basics of what Tycoon games offer. It would be nice if I could customize more things, but I also don't want to get into something right now that will require a lot of time since I don't want to start the game and then stop after a week or two and come back to it about 2 months after being lost as to what I was even doing (what my plans were for the in game business and stuff like that).

Also the two games I refunded were Parkasaurs and Good Company.

With Parkasaurs I feel like it might just be better to get Planet Zoo (it cost about $10USD more when it's on sale but you get a lot of content). As with Good Company, that was sort of what I was looking for, but it also seems that you need to move to the next level and not something that naturally progress as well from the one level that I played (so sort of like the format that Two Point Hospital has) and you being one of the characters was not to my liking since that slowed stuff down.


I just want simple and enjoyable, I might try to jump back Into Planet Coaster but what sort of sucks is how little management stuff you can do in that game, so you can only control certain things, and that also leads to limited funds and then it is really expensive to build some coasters. I wish that there was also a Zoo element to that game like Frontier had with RCT3 since that was cool having that.


I am just being very picky since I want customization (freedom to make things look the way that I want them to, curse you DQB2) but I also want to have some consequences for not tending to the needs of people (aka customers/staff not getting the attention that they need) but also not being something that feels like an impossible "feet". I want to dictate the employees on what to do and being able to monitor how much if something they are doing (so employee 1 is working in this specific area doing this specific task and anything outside of that is not something that they will be able to do, but also having it where some employees can be assigned multiple task with one being prioritized above the rest and when that one is done they can help other employees).


I want to work twords something, but also I don't want complete freedom because if I have that I won't know what to "make" since I don't have that much creativity in me (so things like template and stuff like that would be nice to have.


Being able to share my work would be a nice added bonus since I want to know what others are also doing. Being also to experience the place is something that I would also appreciate, maybe less so if it was say a factory but if it was a park or something else like a resort or something that people go to for pleasure (to pass the time) than I would like to walk around. Like in Animal Crossing, you have a well designed museum, I was surprised by how big and relaxing the entire structure was, but being able to walk around that was calming (and if I had the entire thing filled with show cases and if I also had individuals walking about, it doesn't matter if it's NPCs or other players).



I don't think such a game exist, but I'm pretty sure that there are some games that have a mix of some of these elememts. Oh and I found resources gathering to be cool, maybe not in the way that Animal Crossing or Harvest Moon do it, but I like the way that Dragon Quest Builders and Minecraft do it (I have not played Minecraft but have seen enough gameplay to get the idea)

Were the Wiis motion controls back then that accurate compared to what we can do in VR now? Or was it more so if you had the motion plus thing? Since it seemed like the way that you would get the best results for stuff was to aim it at the IR bar?

Ah that section was odd -
because it was zero gravity for everyone except Alyx!

However, I had the opposite problem. Knowing
it was zero-G
I got a good handle on it quickly - TOO quickly. If you throw the grenades so well that you kill all the guys too fast you'll softlock the game. Bad guys will stop spawning and you can't get through the door at the end of the hall!

Maybe? I found this mod Steam Workshop :: CoasterCam
I've never used mods for the game though. Maybe I need to get this going again. It's very much a modern RCT2 style.

Yeah $30 is a little high. I paid $12 I think way back when it was in alpha. I do think I've easily gotten more than $30 worth of value out of it though.

Man, Cold Steel 3 is so much better than the previous games. Hearing that CS4 is a step down is pretty disappointing.

Yup. Parkitect is what kept flashing in my mind in big, bright neon while reading your entire post. Lots of creative freedom. Nice management hooks (that Planet Coaster lacks). Great Workshop support. You can also set up lots of prefab rides if you'd rather focus on staff & budget.


You also mentioned Two Point briefly. Did you ever give that a go? I think it's one of the friendliest management sims on the market. Super charming with a gentle learning curve, yet doesn't skimp on the depth. Killer production values too.


Overcrowd gets my underdog vote. One of my faves in the genre that doesn't get much talk. Guess it helps that I'm a daily metro commuter. Great effort from a three-person team.


Game Dev might provide the more simplistic angle you're looking for. It's no pushover on depth, but it's more breezy than most.


Haven't played Megaquarium but it comes from the talented devs behind Big Pharma (heart) and looks to have a real positive reception.


RoI is more of a logistics management game but man does it have sophistication and styyyyle in its design. Currently -50% at WinGameStore.


Speaking of which, TF2 is likely the best logistics management game out there atm. Covers transportation networks from the past 150 years with authentic vehicles. Great campaign/tutorial that goes through the various ages of transport. Gorgeous, detailed presentation.

Just some of my current faves. There's a bunch more but it's already getting long-winded.

So there is a precise measurement of the velocity of your hands, the angle and the time you release the object? I did not know the tracking was this good.

However, objects all have the same weight, right? So, if you throw a bottle or a chair towards the cat with the same movement, then you would get the same result, wouldn't you? Or do a chair and a bottle have different weights? How could you aim without feeling the weight?

I am wondering, because I have watched two videos of two different people, one with a bottle, one with a cat, and they both hit the cat (and then the bird) on their first try, and that was the very beginning of the game, so they did not have time to get accustomed to the in-game physics.

I would like to see a video of someone throwing stuff of different weights in VR, and sometimes failing to hit the target (like me in real life).

Granted, I'm currently in NG+3 and the last DLC, but I think I'm finally seeing how frustrating this game can be for new players, haha. Was a long time ago I did this poorly, so this will be a ride I'm sure.

Tracking is essentially 1:1 to real life (ie guns are just as accurate as lightguns except in 3D space, not on a flat screen, so you can move your hand around in game corners and over/around objects and then fire while in cover for example), how each game decides to simplify the action to make it easier or harder or with auto aim or without differs. Objects have different weights, heavier objects get a lower throw distance, or even require two hands to be lifed and thrown at all. There's no weight on your actual hands is what people were saying earlier, since you're obviously not holding objects. just the controllers, and therefor you move free and fast regardless in real life so they have to simulate weight in game in some other way that feels natural. Some do it with adding lag that means the game hands trail slower behind your real ones when holding hreavy objects forcing you to go slower yourself to match and not deal with the disconnect in tracking, others just simulate the weight on the object so that it needs a bigger arc/faster throwing to go far, if it's possible for it to travel far at all with a throw.

Mixed reality footage drives the 1:1 tracking home pretty well but not all VR games have such modes (and not all VR gamers have such a set up of course).

But you can kinda sorta tell even in videos that just have a picture in picture view of the player and the game view.

Wow, going back to Dark Souls III after 120h of The Witcher 3 is doing a number on me. I'm dying over and over!

Granted, I'm currently in NG+3 and the last DLC, but I think I'm finally seeing how frustrating this game can be for new players, haha. Was a long time ago I did this poorly, so this will be a ride I'm sure.
Demon Prince in NG+2 wrecked me the most in that game. It was just painful with how much health they have and how much more health they get if you summon. The estus situation was very dire. Probably the most difficult boss for me in all the SoulsBornekiro games. Needed so many attempts to take them down.

Oh yeah, Demon Prince was also more challenging than I thought. Took me a while to decipher their moveset and learn how to deal with them at the same time.

I just did Spear of the Church and it was way more challenging than it should be. :face-with-open-mouth-and-cold-sweat: Doesn't help that my character (that I created 3+ years ago) is 100% focused on offense so I'm dying in a few hits, but it was manageable once I learned how to use of my Washing Pole. :longswordblob:

Next up, Midir and Gael. :face-screaming-in-fear:

I have two point and I liked it. I never "finished" the game though. I think I will go back to it.

Also Game Dev Tycoon is a fun game, I like how it's the western version of Game Dev Story. Since Game Dev Story focus much more on the Japanese game industry

Sushi Striker on Switch is fun until you realize going from chapter 1 to chapter 2 is basically going from easy difficulty to go fuck yourself difficulty and there are tons of chapters.

I get myself a DAC that I hooked up to my Xbox 360 (and that I also plan to use on my PS4 (heck I might just buy 2 DACs? Since they only cost $30USD?


My monitors audio is not that great. I hooked up the audio to my G560 Speakers and oh boy does Nier G sound a lot better now (my speakers give the music that nice "kick" that I'm sure the music is known for). I will later on have to change some things and likely just mute my monitor almost altogether. Since audio still comes out of my monitor even though I have audio connected via the Optic port.

Also Niers attacks sound a lot weaker than I recall. So it's like the music is nice and "alive" but the sound from the attacks is just meh.

I have some more testing to do (assuming that this doesn't break in the next few months) this was worth the $30USD that I spent on it.

I wonder if there is an audio delay that I am getting with my set up and what options I should go with to have multiple stuff hocked up. I don't have my speakers. Should I buy too optic cables (one for my Xbox and another one for my PS4 and then just swap the cable that Insert into the DAC? Oh the possibilities. Oh and I think N/S now has Bluetooth as an option for connecting so I don't have to use my audio Jack to connect to it and j can just have the audio Jack connected to my DAC instead. And oh Sony why does the N/S have Bluetooth support but the PS4 doesn't? Or at least for connecting to audio stuff?

I hear that the game plays better on the 3DS with the stylus instead of touch input. Could that be the reason why it feels more difficult on the Switch?

Done with Black Mesa.

As in, I stopped playing because Xen was boring as fuck and absurdly long.
It's more interesting than the original... which does not mean that much, since they just did basic FPS puzzles with a side of the worst ennemies in the game. Shooting is just busywork in Xen. Humans are mildly interesting, there are some decently challenging parts... aliens are just nothing. Especially not the bosses, which are shitty scripted sequences where you mostly run away, trying to find the way to go.

Ultimately, I like the remade parts. Mostly, I have some issues with them, especially in the visual department where it goes a bit too far at times, and not enough at others (here I would put some metal ladders on concrete walls which are veeery hard to see; it's minor, but it's a symptom that they got better in game design later in the game).
Performance is very poor, no miracles here... man I kinda forgot how much I disliked the Source engine. And the physics are just weird, it's unreliable, with Xen's jet pack it's a right mess.

I like Half Life, I like what they did to it.
What was not here is quite poor. Pretty, but not fun to play, like one of the trillion of FPSs released a decade ago. Which is pretty much what Black Mesa is...

Also from the little I played of Alyx... I think I don't even like any of the Valve-produced games anymore.
Years down the line, they all feel like tech demos with a game crammed in, with piss poor gameplay (Half Life 2 is still one of the worst feeling FPS I've ever played - how the franchise managed to go from not great but fine to significantly worse I'll never understand).
It's the "it's cool in convention and for two hours then it's slow and boring but you can follow the story". Alyx is just cramped, slow as fuck, and trying too hard to rely on horror.

Yeah, it's a big evolution in VR.
And it still plays worse in every way from a regular game.
I don't mean that VR is a fad!
Not at all.
It's the future.
A future where games are not as fun, exactly like it happened with AAA bullshit filled with "cinematic action" and "realistic physics", without forgetting "Rockstar© animations". Beautiful. "Immersive". Slow and a complete bore to play.
If that's what FPS in the future end up being, I'll play even less of them.
