One of best deals on Steam ever. If you don't own bunch already.
Yeah, it's a great deal.

It reminds me of the deals we used to have on previous Summer and Winter sales (buy the whole catalogue of a publisher for 30/40€).
I own them all already, otherwise I would jump on this deal. ;)

Well damn, that's a crazy deal :sweaty-blob:

(Funny how it highlights again how differently Square treats their western and japanese stuff. Japanese games: here's a bundle of 4 games for like 50€. Western games: here's a bundle of almost every fucking thing we have for 40€ :grinning-face: )

Can't say no to completing my collection with this, especially with everything going to charity again.

The Ascent looked really great!
Really hyped about that one. It seems super fast and impactful, if the RPG systems hold up, that could be a great game.
Also it looks real good, I hope we'll have more small indies like that. Top down action is an easy way to make nice visuals without going wild on asset quality.

Yeah. I know I'm harping on this but it kind of emphasizes how insane some of their Japanese properties' prices are.

Good deal, got a bunch of DLCs that I didn't own already

Regarding that Super Mario 64 fan PC port, I've made a video with my thoughts about this whole situation:

I fully expect that Nintendo will eventually shut this video down just because I said that they should just release their old games on PC instead of trying to put the genie back in the bottle.

That is really a good deal but sadly I already own most of the games I liked from Eidos. Still a nice gesture though.

It was supposed to be the best FPS ever. Created by the legendary John Romero himself.
The game was hyped up and had a pretty aggressive marketing campaign:

When it finally released it was mediocre with notoriously bad AI companions.

Daikatana is now considered to be good?
I somehow jumped into a strange timeline.
It's a flawed game, with some interesting ideas.

If it didn't have an insane hype going for it, and a publicity campaign that backfired, I'm sure the negative impressions would be nowhere near what they were.

It does have problems (the A.I. of your partners), but it also has some positives that people overlook.
The different settings/time-periods, shooting + melee weapons, it has some gameplay diversity that you wouldn't find in most games in the genre.

It's fine people don't like it.
But, I really don't understand, both at the time, and now, how some people continue to label it a bad game without ever having played it, just because someone else says it's a bad game.

There are so many worse games that Daikatana, and you get none of this "animosity" directed towards them.

Ion Storm was a very interesting experience, that sadly didn't last. But it brought us some great games. Starting with Deus Ex, of course. Anachronox was an insanely underrated game, that deserved better. And Daikatana, while flawed, and a "victim" of engine changes, and a long and complicated production, turned out at best as a very enjoyable "cult game" if you approach it with the right frame of mind, or at worse a fascinating failure, from the industry's, at the time, "rock star" John Romero.

And here it comes that ad again... :grinning-face-with-smiling-eyes:

You know what seriously pisses me off? That spot was mimicking the "trash talk" that many gamers used while playing multiplayer matches on FPSs, and people went berserk over it, to a point where you mention Daikatana, and everyone quotes or mentions that ad.

Then, a few years later, the dickhead that came up with the ad is now running Devolver, pulls the same "edgy" promotional tactics, and people love it and think it's clever.
How utterly ironic.

Daikatana is also what happens if you give developers too much money and time to make games, they fuck it up.
In a way, yeah.

Ion Storm had a lot of money, and free reign. And sometimes, without someone "pressuring" you to meet deadlines, and overseeing things, you lose your focus.
John Romero would be the first to tell you what they did wrong. In a way, it was like with Duke Nukem Forever. You are making a game, it's supposed to be "top of the line" stuff, then you take too long and another game releases that makes your game feel dated, so you scratch what you did, change engines, and redo stuff. Multiply it a few times, and you got Daikatana. Duke Nukem Forever, at least its earlier incarnations, didn't even make it out the door.

It's funny to think that this was the big project from Ion Storm, and the minor projects, that had no hype going for them, Deus Ex and Anachronox, turned out a lot better. The later sadly suffered from Daikatana's bombing, and was clearly pushed out the door a bit too soon, and needed some more bug fixes (Daikatana as well).

I followed Ion Storm, from birth until death, closely, and it was a fascinating period.
And, in a way, a cautionary tale.

I never got the hate for that Daikatana poster. When i first saw it i laughed my ass off. I understood exactly what they were going for and then to see the backlash was bizarre to me. Oh well, 20 years later and it's still funny.
I don't get it either. It's not that the poster is particularly clever, but it was clear from day one that the ad was using the typical "trash talk" that people would throw around during a FPS MP match.

Like that Championship Manager ad that had an attractive lady in lingerie, fed up because her boyfriend is more interested in the game, than to shag her.
At the time, you had reports of wives asking for divorce, because their husbands were addicted to the game, and that was an obvious play with that.

It's curious how the two ads received a totally different response.

Daikatana is essentially a train crash everyone got to watch in slow motion. It's not a bad game per se but it has its share of frustrating design question marks that keep it from being enjoyable.

Save gems, companion AI and weapon design ruins any praise I could hope to give it.

The hate for the poster comes from looking at it with the final product in hand. Its not that the poster itself is bad, but it's extremely silly in hindsight.

Nah, many people (and the press) had it for the game before it even launched, just because of that ad.

People were genuinely insulted about "being made a bitch", "suck it down".

It was weird.

Daikatana did however give us Daikatana GBC which is a game I'll forever vouch for as janky as it can be.

It was the 90's and it had a bad word in a magazine ad, you can't cuss in videogames, that's illegal!

Well, we got Deus Ex, Anachronox and Thief out of the whole mess so i ain't mad.

I can see what Stone Ocean was getting at but irony aside i remember it more like FunktionJCB says. A bunch of trash talking online FPS bad-asses getting upset by an advert made by one of the people responsible for their love of playing online FPS games while talking trash. It was hilarious to see.

Somewhat related, but after Ion Storm closed, Romero (and his Playboy posing girlfriend, Stevie Case; he really was living the rock star life!) and Tom Hall (Anachronox, Commander Keen, ...) created Monkeystone Games, and they released a small, but insanely charming game that I still own, "Hyperspace Delivery Boy!".

I occasionally still reach out to Romero, and Tom Hall about re-releasing it.
They are both great chaps, by the way. For many people, Romero turned into a bit a joke because of Daitakana, which is insanely unfair, considering the career and games that he worked on.
But, he is an approachable guy, who loves talking about videogames (and metal music). I probably still have some emails from him a few decades old. :)

Yeah. It was ironically the "edgy", trash talking "radical" gamers that got offended, because they didn't get the obvious joke. They took it literally.
If they got the joke, they probably would be even more offended, since it was on them. 🤣

All things considered, the gamers and the press didn't liked Daikatana. Either it's because of the ad, or the gameplay, or both. So : it was a failure.

Maybe it shouldn't have been such a failure without the ad. Can't know that.

But in the end, one thing matters : the game didn't reach their audience. And that's what matters. It was a failure. So that's how it is remembered and the ad is a part of that failure.

It's like if the best game in the world releasing only on EGS and not selling to anyone. You (not you in particular, FunktionJCB , you know what I mean :p ) can whine all you want about "steamfanboyz gamerz not wanting to buy on EGS it's just another launcher grow up losers", if you do not reach your audience, you failed.

If you want to succeed, do everything you can to succeed. Maybe someone in marketing thought the ad was a good move, maybe IonStorm thought the game was good enough, they made their choices and they failed in terms of sales numbers.

It's common knowledge that chance has a lot to do in success and failures, but if you take the risk to piss off people even before releasing your game, you're not putting all the odds in your favor, and sometimes you pay for it for decades. Like Daikatana is now remembered as one of the biggest failures, even if the game is not THAT bad.

I don’t want to talk too much about the Daikatana thing as it annoys me a bit. Understand me, I am no Romero fanboy, but the perfect storm of shit that resulted in one of the creator of the GOAT doing an epic fail and then never being given another chance or the time of day for a stupid ad he had nothing to do with is ridiculous.
It’s like nobody looks good here, marketing and Romero obvs, but also the press and players. Everybody lost their senses.

I love how steam changed their bundles to discount if u own some of the items. On top of this being an extremely generous bundle already, I got an even further discount.

That is really a good deal but sadly I already own most of the games I liked from Eidos. Still a nice gesture though.
Implying that any of us are actually going to play any of these games we buy :p

I beat Ghost Recon Wildlands today a game I've been playing since June 2018 with my buddy.

Took us about 120 hours total for both to 100% it and to get the alternate ending as well along with doing the sam fisher missions/predator stuff, it was pretty fun for the most part but the game is boring as shit solo.

Definitely had some hilarious points and stuff like that but kind of reached that inevitable peak or area in it where it's just sort of like "Are we done yet?" We sort of got to like 90% done and kept finding time to play which is pretty difficult for us both to align together.

Anyways yeah pretty cool for me, will have to see if Breakpoint will be a neat thing at some point but everything I've read is kind of meh

From what I remember at the time, there were stores of extreme excess going on at the Dallas office that put Romero and his work ethic in a bad light that have nothing to do with the marketing campaign. Massive parties, Romero coming in by lunch and being out the door by 4pm, and so on. Clearly he's learned from this, and hopefully his 1930's gangster game will put some spotlight back on what he can.

Daikatana is more a joke now because of the hype that it failed to live up to than because it was actually worse than any other game ever. Something like Extreme Paintbrawl is infinitely worse from every standpoint a game could be, but you likely havent ever heard of it or its lack of functioning AI, because it wasn't from the mind of the Doom level god with the luscious mane.

At least he was hands off and let Hall and the Austin office do their thing so we did get other great games.

how some people continue to label it a bad game without ever having played it
I played it on release and trust me. It was frustrating. There is a good reason why games with AI companions do not automatically show a game over screen when a companion "dies". Especially frustrating with AI that stupid.

The marketing campaign is being brought up because the game failed hard on many levels. Would it have been an excellent fps, people would praise the advertisement. Making fun of "Romeroe will make you his bitch" has nothing to do with being "edgy" or not understanding the campaign. It is about "the joke" not working out because the game wasn't good enough. And so the advertisement is being used to make fun of the game. The joke has been reversed.

In some ways Daikatana is what ME:Andromeda is today. A mediocre game, with some positive aspects that are not able to overcome the immense amounts of hype that was generated and its general design flaws.
But the difference is that ME:A lacks in writing, story and facial expressions. Daikatana failed in not making playing through levels not frustrating.
That was fixed with later (fan)patches and it is probably a much better game now. But that doesn't make me forget how not fun it was to play, despite having some cool ideas.
