The difference is there for me. Especially at 27" and close to the display 2160p looks more pleasing than 1440p, for example.
I just think it's not as mind blowing as high, variable refresh rates. I rather use my GPU performance budget on that tbh.

It depends on the distance between your eyes and the screen really. If you use PC monitor you don't need 4K but if you use TV (that usually quite far away) you'll want 4K.

I find that sitting a couple of metres away from my TV I cant tell the difference between 1080p and 4k, id have to schooch closer for it to become apparent and so i usually stick to 1080p to get a steady framerate.

Death Stranding is running great for me at 1440p everything on high and i get a constant 60fps. If that frame rate drops i would drop to 1080p.

I really have to disagree. The closer I'm the more beneficial and pleasing 4k looks to me.
Sure screen size plays a factor but saying that 4k is irrelevant if you are close to the screen is wrong.

People even prefer their smartphone screens to be at high resolution and perceive a difference.
Is there a drop off at one point? Certainly. But it's not as simple as this chart makes it out to be.

Training and using a high resolution also is a factor here. Once you get used to a certain pixel density, you'll start noticing differences more easy.
Human brains are amazing at adapting to things: thirty fps is awesome to most people, after getting used to it for years. Let them play at 100+ for one and it will be hard for them to go back.

I feel like it's the opposite for me.

Games look crisp on my big 1080p TV from my couch, but if I look closer then I can see all the jaggies and low IQ.

I've been using a 1080p 27" for years. And you are telling me that at this size I maybe should aim for 1440p, that I will see a difference.
I hate you, that's doubling the monitor's price.

From AOC 27G2U (1080p/144hz Free/G-Sync monitor, ~240 euros) to LG 27GL850 (1440p/144hz G-Sync monitor, ~440 euros) :cryblob:

Having used 27" for years, I fear going down in size would be a little jarring.

I still find it funny for some reason how Carrion is console exclusive to Xbox and Switch and Fall Guys is console exclusive to PS4.

You literally need all 3 consoles (PS4, Switch, Xbone now, PS5, Switch, XSX next-gen) if you want as much indie goodness as possible and yet you are missing a ton of indie goodness that's only on PC.

Indies will definetly be moneyhatted left and right by the console companies to delay the release on other consoles while PC being excluded from that timed exclusivity bullshit. Epic still does some of it, but not as much as before and unless they are online only you can still go arrrrr.

And btw, Fall Guys is super fun.

For me the most important thing is always sound. I have an LG Oled TV but I never use it for serious gaming because it's connected to a simple 2.1 setup and it doesn't sound great to my ears.
My 24" 1440p / 165hz monitor + Sennheiser 650 is still my favourite way to game.

On very rare occasions I play on the 1080p projector, mostly chill short games like Life is Strange or Firewatch. Lately I've been playing The Last of Us 2 on it. Not sure I'd want to hear all the breaking bones in my headphones...

Yes 4K is obviously better but is it necessary though. The price of the 4K monitor is really more expensive than 4K TV and the hardware required to do 4K is obviously more expensive as well. That's why a lot of people said that 1440p with high refresh rate is the sweet spot.

I agree, and the reason why I've chosen 1440p + high, variable refresh rate for my setup.

In contrast to my brother who got himself a very good 27" 4k display. His image looks a lot better, but he plays at ~45fps in many games. Which makes the IQ advantage irrelevant in my opinion.

And while talking about displays, we are not even taking HDR into account. Which still has not arrived on PC in a meaningful way. Which is the real crime imo.

Fall Guys is my shit, loving it. Haven't pre-ordered it, but if the game avoid server issues and other techincal issues and the devs keep it going with content, it can become big.

I miss 16:10 so much. :disappointed-face:
I recently used a really old 1920x1200 screen (Dell FPW2405 -- holy shit it's 15 years old!) on a secondary PC for a while and it really is a nice aspect ratio for work. Especially 2 monitors with 16:10 each. But for gaming a single 16:9 (or, when supported, 21:9) monitor is much nicer IMHO.

I don't know how Xbox can do HDR but Windows PC can't (do it as good)

I only recently moved my gaming to 1080p, up till now I was playing at 1680x1050. I have a monitor and a TV connected to the PC, the monitor is 1680x1050 so I just set Windows to mirror the image because I was too lazy to properly set up multiple monitors. Framerate is the only thing that matters to me, I don't care about resolution at all.
Yeah it depends on your preferences. I have a laptop so 1080p is the max I'd go for with at the very least 60fps if possible. As long as it's a decent framerate, it makes so much difference when playing.

HDR in Games on PC is amazing. You just need a good, HDR capable Display.
That's the problem, because 99% of the gaming monitors out there have an HDR implementation that's not worth a dime.
But connect one of the few good HDR gaming monitors or a good HDR TV and it's the same visual quality as on consoles.

As someone who works on photos 16:10 is great! I would even say that Microsoft all in one desktop with 3:2 is pretty much my dream setup for work. For games I would want a ultra wide.

On the resolution talk, I’ve found 1080p to be a little wanting in terms of resolving small details in the world. Lots of games have all sorts of unpleasant shimmering and aliasing that can’t really be smoothed over without intrusive post-processing AA (that also messes with UI elements). I noticed it most on MH World and Rise of the Tomb Raider. I imagine as games get more complex visually, there will be more small details that don’t necessarily play well at 1080p.

I don’t know if going up to 1440p solves that though. My monitor is 24’, which I find is large enough, and I was thinking of getting one at a comparable size but 1440p for higher pixel density.

I do wish Fall Guy adds workshop map support in the future. Having addition option where random maps joins the pool a.k.a. Super Mario Maker 2 can join the pool would do wonders to game's longevity.

The Sega Mod community is ridiculous. I can't get enough of SRB2Kart, esp. once I figured out how to run it in OpenGL & get 144hz up and running (if anyone needs any help just let me know).

Now we got Shovel Knight in my Sonic Kart game. Lets go.

and if Sega won't give us Daytona...

I really miss Stage6. It was a streaming site by the divx people that allowed you to upload high quality video without much compromise. rip my audiosurf videos.

The next time I buy a new monitor is when it has HDR.

I'd drop $700USD on a 27" 1440p 144hz, Gsync monitor. Are there even any OLED monitors?

Ultra wide would be cool and after seeing all the trailers and playing Death Stranding, ya ultra wide is the way to go for that game.

in case anyone wants to play around:

Maybe I will make something and send it to Lego ideas and get it made.....

I think DD is the main one that does timed exclusive for their games and they know that they can do it since the games that they typically publish are big hits that sell a good amount of copies.

---------------
In regards to DQXI ya that is just BS from SE.

It makes sense as to why it's just a port of the N/S version since it would prove to be problematic just to add that stuff to the base game.

You sort of knew that it was coming to PS4 and PC seeing how the game did sell on those platforms and people did say that they would pay for new additions as DLC. I guess that DLC just came in the same way as what P5R did.

I guess that times have changed since the P5R things was something that JPN companies would do on PS2, but with DLC and stuff becoming a new norm I guess that's what people expectations went.

Also it seems that Nippon will finally get to play DQXI on PC, the main thing this time how ever is that the JPN versions seems to be it's own version. So it will only support JPN and not English or any other languages. The version people get outside of Japan has other language options but just not Japanese other than the VA.

Also maybe someone will mod in the Fairy Tail costume for Erik.

I guess this means that I will be rebuying DQXI yet again.... I originally had the game for PC and PS4. I ordered the PS4 CE, my PS4 CE came with 2 copies of the game actually (thank you SE) and I ordered the N/S version less than a month ago since it was on sale from GameStop used for $40USD (well at least I have that version for collectors reasons, I wonder if that version coming to PS4,Xbox and PC will now being prices down. I remember when DQVII and DQVIII were like $25USD new from places like Amazon and GameStop, GameStop even had those games on clearance. I think they go for much more now.)

So unless the PC version gets modded there will be no definite Edition and while some textures and stuff can be replaced there will still be the issue of the new content that will not have any textures that they can be swapped out for.

I know that the Witcher 3 got cross save and stuff like that and DQXI:S get cross save would be amazing!!!!! So please do that SE if you are going to charge me $40USD for the game again..... I do hope that more devs make use of that feature since that could get more people to double dip more easily and both Valve and Nintendo are okay with it, so why not use it.

I wonder why SE didn't do a loyalty discount, at first I thought maybe it's because it wouldn't be fair to PS4 owners since I don't think that Sony even offers discounts on PSN. I think they have an option to give people that have a license for something else a copy but not a discount....which is sort of dumb seeing how Nintendo of all people have that option for the eShop!!!!!!! And we all know just how basic and sort of backwater place the eShop is.

They could at least bring down the price of DQXI or something and then just offer both games as part of a bundle or something, hey for just $50USD or something get both versions of the game....but nope...

Out of all the JPN publishers SE seems to care the least about it's PC audience. I thought it was cool how SEGA just upgraded everyone on PC to the Complete Edition of VC4. The only bad thing about VC4 was that there was this one DLC that PC didn't get because you need to play the demo or something. Also I don't think SE ever goes more than 50% off with it's JPN titles (well at least not for a vast majority of them).

SE doesn't really update its games on PC either, sometime they do just like this week they updated Octopath on PC to add Korean language options.

Well seeing how I never do finished DQXI I will just finish it on PC. I was planning of playing my N/S version of DQXI in 2D mode but I don't know anymore.

Oh and what I like about my PS4 versions of DQXI is that they are both still sealed and that they both have different cover art.

A bit shorther than expected and has some flaws, like the environments being too much alike, stamina decrasing too fast, not that many different weapons, but overall I really enjoyed my time with.

Will definetly go back to the game in the future to try the horde mode and to try and complete some more cheevos.

So much concern trolling regarding game pass on Twitter, Reddit and so on.

Game pass is great value and it does indeed sell games considering I use game pass as a demo service for what I wanna buy on Steam/PC and if the game is console exclusive (like Kingdom Hearts games) I usually just play the game on game pass. Like I have had KH 2.8 HD sitting in my PSN wishlist since forever, but I have always found the price too high, but now that it is on game pass I plan on playing it there unless a PC version is announced.

I have only heard good things about game pass from indie devs. They get upfront money from MS, lots of people tries the game and if it's good it gives the game more word of mouth, some people then finish it via game pass and others (like me) buys it regardless of where they buy it.

My personal hot take is: we as consumers shouldn't care or worry about a company's bottom line. Microsoft shops around for games for their service and if it wasn't a good deal I swear companies wouldn't take it. Take RDR2 for instance. Maybe Microsoft wrote them a big check, more people subscribed to GP, and then spent money on the Online. Everybody wins.

The money is loose when someone tries to bruteforce customer acquisition.
The devs won't sing Microsoft praises when GP is established and they only get a fraction of what they are getting now.

And customer satisfaction with specific games and devs could go sour very quickly. You see a great game on gamepass, play it for hours upon hours, maybe hundreds of hours because it is a game like the Paradox grand Strategies, X3, Factorio, Rimworld, Minecraft, Football manager etc. and suddenly the license ends and the game is not available to play on GP anymore. Without a means to transfer progress and savegame, you will level behind a fuck-ton of pissed off customers.
