Price increase could be ok if all these companies weren't already having record profits well before COVID and lockdowns since these games come with MTX/expansions/passes whatever and those help extend the product life and profitability a lot.
I used to argue for higher prices. Why? Because I thought that we'd have better industry for developers and other game workers, better games and less MTX.

In my defense, I was younger and even more impressively stupid. Like Hall of Fame level stupid. They won't leave a fucking cent on the floor while there is still blood to squeeze.

I mean, Microsoft approach for next-gen is to allow as many people as possible to play games, not just rich people or the middle class.
Gamepass is great. Even if I just 'rent' games, I do that already with my library, so I'm happy more people can experience the joy of having your time with a game and then moving on, without any $$ regrets.

so we're calling games essential items and game pass a victim blaming cult. 😆😆😆

like i said: no one is requiring you to like it. that doesn't make it not an option. never said the price wouldn't rise. i said its a good deal.
I read through the entire thing, Idk that anyone said that.

As to games being essential items... it isn't cut and dry.

Hobbies are essential to at least some level of mental health. What that hobby looks like is different for everyone. Gaming is a secondary hobby at times for me but I like that its there. I may have nature, exercise, exploring, reading, family and friend time above the 'list' regarding free time but games is on the list. Hell I'm here so of course games is on the list. For others, games are much are higher the list and that's ok. To them it is an essential mental health item, even before the physical distancing we've all been doing.

Life= The ability to find things for yourself that allow you to call your existence more than 'survival'. In the USA, even survival is often a 'privledge' of the healthy, sane or even simply compentent. Life, as defined, is rapidly being attainable by only the compenent and life satisfication and true stability only the stuff of the lucky or hyper competent.

sure, people can consider them essential. i just don't agree, especially not combined with a day one purchase price argument. that gulf may be too wide for people to see eye to eye with me and i accept that but i'm unlikely to change my stance on it, just like they aren't.

oh and apologies, game pass was compared to being punched in the mouth. not sure that's any more reasonable.

They're not always essential for sure.

But for some people, they are in some situations. I can see were the people arguing with you on this are coming from.

However, items that elevate our existance above 'survival' should be allowed to be 'essential' at times. Not all of the time and in all situations, but I'll keep the door open for it.

sure, that's fine and i can agree that games can make our lives better. that doesn't really have much effect on my feelings on day one pricing of games being $10 more.

$10 isn't $30 and to some people it is nothing.

I think that for some its 'the principal of the matter', so I get that. For others its a material matter and we should be understanding of that.

You're entitled to your opinion and I've rubbed up against the majority opinion here a lot and I've gotten push back too, no worries.

Dude, that was an example to point out the flaw in your logic. I never compared it to that, we both know that's asinine.

I don't want to get on your case and we agree more often than not, especially in the Apple thread but you're really not doing the points I made justice there.

and it also may be that i'm not good at articulating myself, that's been the case before. that's part of why i made that post about options. to me when i say xyz is a luxury/non-essential i don't think "you dont need to have this" but more "you can wait to have this if you don't like the launch cost".

i was being a bit silly but not making it obvious so i apologize there. i do see that there are reasons to not like game pass, that's cool. everyone has their reasons to dislike whatever. but there are also people it does work for and to me it's just presenting another option in the world of pricing, same as pirating is another option.

i don't blame anyone for not liking game pass but it's not really a scourge of the industry, just another option for consumption. one that doesn't appeal to everyone, same as all the other options.

Thanks. I do agree that gamepass can be a fantastic option, especially if you are an enthusiast that buys many "one shot" games a month. I just think it's not the solution to the pricing problem, rather a temporary escape that can (and I think, as Durante pointed out, will) be taken away... Leaving us with the same problems as before.

I see that Control Ultimate edition is 32% off on GMG. I’m Gold VIP or whatever so your discount might be different. It’s wonderful to get the full package for half off and on Steam no less.

i guess that is another gulf of opinon i didn't consider. i am very much a "consume game, move on" type for most of these titles other than a couple of old old games i keep roms for or a driving/sports/service game. in both my digital and physical life i am about as anti-clutter as it gets.

and i do expect the price to go up. i'm currently on the $15/month plan and i expect the price for pc to at least double to $10, there's a reason they call beta now heh. but like i said earlier, the price on everything goes up so it won't be a shock to me.

but i also think ms knows that this is a precarious path and every company in the universe wants your $X a month so they will be obliged to keep it reasonable for that reason. it's not a deal after the price goes too high for most. maybe a misguided thought? perhaps.

I'm totally with this alternative approach, but while you pick up the kalashnikovs I want to make an unrelated note that PH3 already operates basically like a co-op (as much as possible within the current economic framework, that is, we don't have employees, just co-owners).
Not even an slaveintern you can easily abuse? Who makes you guys coffee then?

Yep. The use case that really soured me on GP and the debates surrounding it was FS2020. That game is a multi-year platform for many DLCs and expansions, it's simply not a good fit for a sub service if you don't buy much else. Yet people argued to just get it there when I pointed out pricing problems with it. You can see how that tends to make someone go from shrugging with a "meh, not for me" to "just stop it with this thing, it's not the solution".

I think the only thing that really scares me about subscriptions is if some products become exclusive to this business model. Otherwise it's a side option that's nice to have if it fits your needs.

It's 40€
It's going to feature an in-page streaming with gameplay/dev comments(?)
Potentially featuring an in-front page banner
And MAAAAAAAAAAAAAYBE a 10% launch discount
Well, so far not a bad prediction

40€ confirmed
Broadcast confirmed
Launch discount confirmed (20% instead of 10%)

hopefully the in-front page banner will be confirmed too. :cat-heart-blob:

for service or long term games it's more of a trial type of thing imo. i personally don't have a problem buying the service game from ms store but i get the reasoning for those who do. same as i'd never buy an mmo on steam while others insist every game needs to be from there.

it just sounds like we're in two different mindsets. for me its treated how i treat netflix/wwe network where its subscription i pay for and dip into when there's something i want. and that makes the most sense for what i do: drift in and out of various games based on my interest level at that moment.

for someone that is an ownership stickler or committed to a platform game it will never be an acceptable situation. reminds me of talking with my friend just the other week. we were playing mcc together and he mentioned he made a mistake with game pass because all he wanted to play on the service was halo, so he just ended up buying mcc on steam lol. that was the better call for him all along.

Why on earth is Hitman 3 Deluxe £25 extra for what essentially boils down to an item pack??

And damn that EGS voucher I still have doesn't work on pre orders :anguished-face:
(not so) fun fact: Hitman 2 with first DLC could be had for that.

Hitman 2 was also ridiculously expensive if you bought the Silver or Gold Edition. In hindsight, it should not have come as a surprise Io took that deal, their business side seems completely aimless and detached from their audience.

My CDkeys Control key also hasnt arrived yet... hm.
