Seems the joke I made earlier may have been true after all :

"It is also reported that EGL sends 14x as much data as Steam and NVIDIA Experience while working in the background"

Perhaps another test routine they forgot to remove? 😉
to be fair, my comment about Reddit wasn't about you but overall as for past experiences within the page reading thinks and spreading information they didn't fully understand as a collective.

I know m8. I'm sure plenty of tech bloggers will do their own tests after this news, both on the cpu usage and data traffic.

From fairly trifling issues about having to use a separate launcher other than the de facto PC darling Steam, to the slightly less trifling issues around aggressive platform exclusivity
From pc gamer's look at the store after 2 years. I closed the page after seeing this so I'm not sure what the rest of it said but maybe if the media could at least pretend to hide their condescension for people who don't like the store then I would pretend to care more about what they have to say.

It's a combination of the media trying to create a dogfight narrative and the author getting their snark on. The only truly interesting things in that article were that Close to the Sun has had 4 million total downloads (including a free week) and Epic has eased up on requiring their games launch exclusively on EGS, which was already known.

We are excited to share that Epic Games has acquired the technology and business of RAD Game Tools, a video game software development company whose products and technology appear in close to 25,000 games and are leveraged by the world’s leading gaming companies, including Epic. Together, Epic and RAD plan to integrate RAD’s powerful technology into Unreal Engine to benefit the developer community and gamers alike.

Surely reaction would be same if Valve bought it, released state of art engine, and put in conditions it's free if you release on Steam, it's included in 30%, from other platforms it's 5% thx.

I'm really down about Hitman 3. Love the recent Hitman games. Not buying it on eggs though so it'll be at least a year before i get it and im holding off on buying any eggs games until they have a decent sale so maybe over a year.

Boo Epic.

The lack of PCVR makes it even easier to ignore for me. I get taking the guaranteed cash, but it doesn't feel any less sucky from my end.

Wandering Band confirmed that Airborne Kingdom won't come to Steam because Epic paid for the development:

It's becoming more and more likely that any games funded/published by Epic will be lifetime EGS exclusive. This may explain why their timed exclusivity deals are becoming less frequent.

"no plans to release the game on Steam" is interesting change from previous statement, since it implies they can release on Steam, which shouldn't be case: (this is like year+ old).

Makes sense. Considering profitability to Epic platform alone, development-supported lifetime exclusives are clearly the superior option, and honestly more justifiable than randomly poaching games as temporary exclusives some will wait out anyways.

Surprised devs took lifetime deal though, as it's much more difficult to justify for them. I guess taking lifetime deal offers them greater resources for current & next project and maybe even greater visibility?

It's sad, because it really looks like a great game. It may have sold decent during release on EGS because it was only €5 with the coupons, but in a few weeks the game will be buried somewhere deep inside Epic's vault without discovery options or (positive) user reviews. [UWSL]But since the game wouldn't have existed without Epic (at least that's what the devs claim in their reply), it's still the better option for them I guess. [/UWSL]

Limiting how many people play your game on purpose is a bold move, they probably were deep in debt and the lifetime exclusive paid better, they want out of the game industry, or they really are pretty stupid.

I have no problem with this. Airborne Kingdom is then pretty much a first party game for Epic. Like Sunset Overdrive and Ryse is for Xbox, Bloodborne is for Sony etc.

I would have a more nuanced view there. Companies shouldn't be the ones dictating speech policy when said platforms are so ubiquitous. The rule of law should. It shouldn't be up to corporations to decide what should and shouldn't be said but an independent organization, without any vested interest other than justice and the rule of law, at least in my opinion. Problem is that the governments are so slow-moving and checked out of this whole thing outside of trying to spy on everyone that we ended up in this mess of a situation.

Unrestricted "free" speech is often not free for others. Bullying, harassment, hate speech and other perversions of the written word should be curtailed. The issue I have with what happened with Parler is that I don't believe that capability, that responsibility should be in the hands of corporations who are utterly unaccountable, and often hold a conflict of interest between policy and revenue. There's also the fact that corporations hold no responsibility to their users, being a resource to them instead.

Agreed. I was just trying to say that Epic isn't done with exclusivity; they are just switching from timed exclusivity to permanent exclusivity.

I hate timed exclusives far more than I hate full exclusives.

Like how I wouldn't have any problem with buying Airborne Kingdom on Epic, but games like Hitman 3 is far worse as it is timed and will wait for Steam version.

What madjoki said, this is a completely different wording than what they stated at first, I will give them... year and a half

I think we were all in agreement that if EGS wants to dip their toe in games development in that way, that's their prerogative, and we would not have a problem with it.

It's the moneyhatting that we reject.

Agreed. It's no different than Ubisoft keeping 1st party games exclusive on uplay.

I still won't buy games on EGS because of the moneyhatting and other shitty practices tho, even if Epic funds them completely. I'm done giving my money to shitty companies.

HITMAN 3 Access Pass on PC
We’ve done everything possible to make this process smooth and player-friendly. However, due to various circumstances out of our control, we want to acknowledge that the process is different to our initial plans for PC players. We also want to share some of the initiatives we’ve set-up to make sure that PC players the chance to keep enjoying the benefits of the World of Assassination.
  • The HITMAN 1 GOTY Access Pass will be available to claim in the first 10 days after launch for anyone who purchases (or has pre-ordered) any edition of HITMAN 3 on Epic Games Store.
  • Owners of HITMAN 1 on EGS (including all players who claimed it when it was available for free in August) will get a free upgrade to the HITMAN 1 GOTY Access Pass at any time after purchasing HITMAN 3.
  • The HITMAN 2 Standard Access Pass and HITMAN 2 Gold Access Pass will be 80% off for 14 days after the launch of HITMAN 3 on Epic Games Store and will continue to be discounted regularly.
Our hope is that these initiatives help to ensure all HITMAN 3 PC players can able to enjoy the new game with full access to HITMAN 1 and their progression carried over as a minimum.

"It will be possible to pre-load HITMAN 3 on PlayStation and Xbox platforms. Make sure that you’ve configured your console to do that and the downloads will begin when they have been prepared and certified. On PC, there won’t be a pre-load option for HITMAN 3 and downloads will begin at the above release time."

I really got into playing hitman 2 last year having had it on my backlog for ages. Replaying levels. Was delighted when I saw 3 announced, then the VR being exclusive to PS annoyed me. I no longer have a vr headsets but it still annoys me. Then the EGS exclusivity means I'll be waiting for deep discount on Steam. I would've actually bought it on launch considering how much I was enjoying 2 last year.
