I need to determine in what way a Steam Deck would be better than a phone + controller, apart from the obvious streaming requirement.
And the 16:10 thing scares me for emulation, I don’t really like how media look on an ipad With the black bars.

At worst I lose 4 euros today, but that’s not the point, help me fam.

Portable emulation and VN machine !

I think you have the answer:ROFLMAO:

But it's a big purchase so I wouldn't get it soon. I will wait till the price calms down, as well as user review / mods / guides before jumping in.

It's fun reading this stuff. FGC twitter has been going on and on for the last few weeks about how difficult it would be to run a PC tournament due to price and specs. It's almost like Valve has been reading it.
Hard not to think that when you get such amazing gems like this also:

There is also the issue of heat and power hungriness. eMMC is seemingly slower but NVMe are seemingly hotter and more needy. Mmh.
Wondering if the middle choice is the right one or maybe the supposedly bad first choice is not so bad ?

I love playing games on my couch while watching TV or whatever in the background. I use my Switch and I also have a laptop with a lapboard but that's a less than ideal solution for playing games. Planning on preordering a Steam Deck tomorrow. I would much rather buy any non Nintendo games that I want to play that way on Steam/Steam Deck then pay the awful prices you find on the Eshop.

I have a buddy that likes to buy almost everything on Switch so he has the option to play it in bed, or on the couch. He's reserving a Steam Deck tomorrow and migrating pre-orders for Switch/PC multiplats moving forward to PC.
As every sensible person should do (I mean, if they buy a Deck). Why pay higher for a library that can be nuked on a whim.

Agree 100%, I think folks are really underestimating game prices on Switch vs. PC as they seem more focused on just the price differential of the devices themselves (to say nothing of performance differences).

I have always been a handheld and PC gamer, and the handheld market has been in a weird spot for years with Sony exiting and Nintendo lagging in some respects (e.g. continuing to wipe digital purchases at each gen start).

As every sensible person should do (I mean, if they buy a Deck). Why pay higher for a library that can be nuked on a whim.
Exactly my issue with Nintendo. I have mostly stuck to physical purchases only as I do not have confidence Nintendo will allow digital purchases to be carried forward to their next device.

The problem with Nintendo is that they will charge you same games multiple times. With Steam Deck you can play pretty much all the games you have from DOS (or even earlier) to today. Also Steam has RetroArch, so it's really easy to emulate stuff too.

Time for Sony / Microsoft to offer DLC games to RetroArch? :D

Yeah they really screwed that up with Wii / Wii U.

It all boils down to how you plan on using the Deck.

If you
  • Care/sensitive about loading speeds
  • Care about fast bootup
  • Care about quicker suspend/resume
  • Plan on installing Windows and using it as a secondary PC
  • Plan on playing large size games (Cyberpunk, RDR2, etc)

Then DO NOT buy the 399$ model. You will cough up more $$$ on storage anyways and using it as a portable PC will be slow experience without SSD.

The 399$ is really for the Switch fans who want a basic PC handheld experience. Which is fine.

The value-add that this having direct access to all of Steam's past, current and future library including the price-competition from all the 3rd party stores seriously can not be underestimated.

Yeah, I think the middle tier is looking to be the sweet spot if you're more of a "power user".

I will think about getting 256GB model next year. First issue is that it is releasing in December so even if I get friend from US to buy it there is no point sending it via mail until at least February due to holiday rush. Second thing is that I have some planned expenses this year so I don't want to go crazy with money. Potential issue is that next year will be 4 years since I bought new phone and it is due to be replaced so we will see how things will be with my budget XD

Steam Deck will be a huge success and probably change the landscape of PC gaming for generations to come. It'll become a hot item and sold out everywhere for the first years in the market. After a while, Valve can release improved versions of Deck, and the cycle continues.

Catching up on all the news on the Gabe Gear while I work... before I start working and there is one very odd thing here. It is nearly all overwhelmingly positive. There is none of the usual BS you get in PC related articles from non-PC sites.

Even the comments are generally positive as well.

Another thing that occurs to me. Photon 3.0, if valve are as open as they normally are and it is available to download to the general public. Well suddenly GPDWIN, AyaNeo and whatever the other one has now have a new free OS they can install on their portable devices. One built with this sort of device in mind.

It really has been a good week for PC announcements. Wonder what today can bring?

If this is successful, I wonder if Valve will eventually release a "home console" (basically Steam Machines 2.0 but made by Valve) as well. It does seem like the next logical step to make PC gaming more accessible and expand it even more.

Well, I'm sure some of you wondered why Mor didn't say a thing, do not worry, I'm alive and I'm absolutely excited about this hardware, it is exactly what I wanted and Valve delivered, as the usage I'm going to do for the Deck is basically indies and JRPGs I think Deck will hold all what I'm going to throw at it without any problem.

I really like the idea of Steam Deck but getting it to function as a proper PC on which I can play non-Steam games seems like it’d be more trouble than it’s worth. Would love to be wrong, though

Yeah, that's what I've been wondering too.

How would other launchers work on the Deck? Can you install them on the OS or do you need Windows? And how about the games' compatibility?

It’s basically a PC with Linux OS. If the launchers have Linux version, then it works fine. I guess not that many have Linux version though, so you end up using Wine or install dual boot config with Windows.
Not even dual boot, you can pretty much delete SteamOS and use it as a windows machine.

Yes of course but if you want to use both. Just assuming some of those features might be SteamOS only. Let’s see.

I hope that happens!

Oh, and Valve said they are perfectly happy if other OEMs also build devices like this in the future (and they can license SteamOS 3.0 for free). If it actually opens up a new market that might happen, though the Steam Deck being far too good a deal price/performance wise might prevent any competitor from showing up for a few years. (Unless e.g. Razer decides to build an even more high-end very expensive one)

You'd probably lose the custom UI/UX (e.g. suspend) though in that case, which would make it a significantly worse handheld IMHO.

I honestly can't see other scenario unless valve mess up something at launch. There is universal praise in most places, and PC community like us are largely excited. The first impression is great. I think the Deck will be a huge success and create many more new PC gamers.

It runs an Arch Linux fork. For GOG, if you don't want to install games separately, you can use Minigalaxy. For others like Battle.net or Origin, you'd have to use Wine/Proton/Lutris or whatever.

When it comes to compatibility, Valve said they have a really big update to Proton that isn't live yet and are aiming to make everything playable by launch. That includes working with BattleEye and EAC to finally make the games using them work on Linux.

Yeah, it looks like it may actually bring a whole new audience too. Here's a copy paste of my post from the other place.

So if I understand this right, for the average Steam Deck users and new to PC gaming, games that are not on Steam might as well do not exist because you need to go above and beyond to run games from other launchers. Yes, you can dualboot Windows on it but let's be real, will the average users do that and waste quite a chunk of the already limited space for another OS? And when you're booting from Windows, you'll lose the slick SteamOS features for the device and it'll become a normal PC. You may install other launchers on SteamOS, but each of them also has its own characteristics and compatibilities too, so it'll get ugly the more you dig into it. Again, for average users these may not be worth the hassle.

Ultimately, it'll be interesting how the publishers and PC launchers (EGS, Uplay, B.Net, GOG, etc) would react to this. There's going to be a whole new audience that they need to reach, but they're only available on Steam. So they either have to release their games on Steam or lose the entire market. Of course, all of this will depend on the success of the Steam Deck, but judging from early receptions it might probably be.

This is a very Valve move, so subtle and yet malicious(?) to the competitors. But it's probably just me looking too much into it.

I think due to the pretty large black bezel around the screen, the visual impact of letterboxing will probably not be so bad, compared to something like an Ipad, where the screen has nearly no bezel, or only a very thin one.

It's Valve move in that they probably don't care what their competitors or anyone else thinks about it, they just do what they want to work on, really.

One thing I like about the Steam Deck is that you are free to install and do whatever the hell you wish with it you don't fancy SteamOS. That, right there, makes it the single best portable option in terms of open computing to me. The fact that SteamOS is a great option for this is great, but you may still want Windows for various reasons if your game of choice isn't on Steam.

That you have that freedom is something that wouldn't happen in a million years in the current industry if it hadn't been Valve making it.
