Just watched the IGN video of Steam Deck. They talk that it will have a suspend mode and that it is possible to continue from the suspend state on a computer. Does that mean that Steam itself will have native support for suspend mode? If so this is a killer feature! 😍
I think the idea is that when you suspend the game on the Deck it makes a cloud save that you then continue on PC.

Even the comments are generally positive as well.
Really? I've made a mistake earlier in scrolling down a Twitter thread and it's all "another gimmick device from valve" one way and "this will bomb hard" in another.

Well, those people probably just console fans who preordered the Switch OLED and currently experiencing buyer's remorse, I don't know. :flare_lmao:

I wonder how capable the deck is of running the most recent AAA power-hungry games like CP2077 or RE8 or even how well it runs some of the heavier games from a few years ago like Dishonored 2 or Arkham Knight. Maybe it can hit the 60fps with some compromisses in portable mode but when pluged to a big TV the games will not look pretty but this is just a wild guess.
Either way I feel this is more an indie machine than anything else, considering the horsepower and the storage.

I honestly wouldn't play shiny new big games on it. It will be an indie, JRPG, VN, relatively old games and emulation machine to me, and that is totally fine.

Meanwhile, I think big games can still run with acceptable framerate at low to medium setting. But I prefer to leave those to my main rig. The main attractiveness of Deck is still its portability and freedom of customization, not technical prowess.

Yeah, graphically demanding and impressive looking games I'm going to play on my desktop at high settings and 60+ fps anyway.
I see this is more as a companion piece to that, for emulating, VNs, indies and stuff, like you said.

This definitely has potential as a primary device as well though, particularly for the switch crowd. The thing is powerful and playing newer stuff at lower settings should definitely be viable.

Yes, definitely agree. I would be very interest in the Deck if I only played on Switch. It is like a Switch Pro minus Nintendo exclusives and detachable joycons. Valve probably know that so they reveal it today (when OLED Switch opens for preorder).

If this is successful, I wonder if Valve will eventually release a "home console" (basically Steam Machines 2.0 but made by Valve) as well. It does seem like the next logical step to make PC gaming more accessible and expand it even more.
I think that Valve may have purposefully avoided stepping on Sony and Microsoft's toes for now. Nintendo Switch is direct competition for Steam Deck but there are no Nintendo games on Steam (yet?) so Valve doesn't have anything to lose. Launching a game console might make Microsoft and Sony re-evaluate the wisdom of releasing games on Steam. So I think that a living-room device is probably not in their plans yet. In the future, assuming that this device is successful, most definitely.

I'm thinking that this has another huge consequence that I hadn't realized before.

If the buzz around this device is anything to go by, a huge amount of people are going to be gaming on PC, on Linux. The work Valve has done along the years on DXVK, Proton and going through the grueling process of ensuring compatibility is going to put some serious dent into the belief that Windows is unavoidable.

Boy, is this overdue.

Yeah, it also explains why they've put that much work into it, to the extent of writing a better AMD graphics driver for Linux than AMD :p

Is that really a big challenge? I get the impression writing drivers for Linux is a pretty much an afterthought for most companies, if they bother with it at all.

I didn't know that. I'm assuming AMD helped and provided them technical documentation and their driver's source code? Quite amazing if so... But also a tiny bit worrying. As someone who is experiencing first-hand how dependent on manufacturers for some drivers I am, who don't give a shit in my instance (fuck you, Asus with your 6 month-old nvidia driver), this is having me hoping Valve will do due diligence there.

Well I am sat here trying to avoid going on ebay to look at PS1/PS2/PS3 games for me to emulate on the play deck.

Especially as I don't have one yet. Probably won't have one till next year either.

And I don't have an optical drive to rip them with either.

And resisting is still a major struggle.

Developers don't get a single cent from your used copy purchase anyway. Easier to just sail to the high seas and you can get undub versions that way too. Make sure to compress your game images as to not waste space.

I don't think you'll have much luck running PS3 games on it though, especially since it runs on AMD hardware which doesn't have TSX.

I keep forgetting I am not on Era here where even the slightest wiff of piracy can get you banned.

But yeah. I always tend to view anybody selling old games at inflated prices as bordering on scalpers (unless it is me selling them, then that is totally legit).

Looking at the list you posted I forgot about DC and Saturn. Loved those old systems.

I should really look back into emulation on my desktop PC.

We're going to need a Muscle-Buka dancing gif for the SteamDeck or a gif of gabe doing the Poni Poni Dash Dance so we can comp a SteamDeck into it.

Tetris Effect is releasing on August 18th. Reading some of the Dev's comments in there, it will have a 25% discount on launch. The devs have also said that they will be following Steams recommended regional pricing as well.

The only thing I now need to see is how onnerous the supposed epic overlay is (ie have they dropped it, if they haven't do I need to sign in, does this effect the steam overlay) then I can see myself grabbing this.

Would be perfect on the Gabe Gear.

There where some rumours that there is an epic overlay in the updated version. I believe it may be related to the new communication overlay epic have created. Not sure how true or I may have got the wrong end of the stick.

There is a minor delay due to some bugs and other comments from the beta they did recently.

Edit: And just because I love the soundtrack to this game, almost surpassed lumines soundtrack for me.

I wonder how that overlay works in Proton.

Since I started the topic of compression, I wonder how universal compression will be on SteamOS. Windows has NTFS compression with tools like CompactGUI and Compressor. Reading on Arch Linux it seems you need to use ZFS or Btrfs file system to use a compression like that. The latter especially seems to be geared towards it.

I wonder what file format the Deck ships with (probably ext4?) and how would switching to Btrfs and using compression affect performance. Since the storage is fairly limited, compression would help a lot.

Whoever is PR director or whatever should be fired. Tweeting useless stats while not having any road map for updates is ridiculous.
I really doubt that the Community Manager tweeting fun stats has any impact on patching and update cycles though.
I wonder if the huge hack and the mitigations required have had more of an impact than some people realise?

Info suggesting Patch 1.3 is imminent and chunky has been going around for a few days so i'd expect to see some less fun tweets from CDPR regarding cyberpunk 2077 soon.

For me it will come down to do I need to sign in to it. If I don't have to (I have no intention of playing against/with friends) then I can happily ignore it. But if it requires a sign in it will be a no go for me.

The pr people probably gotta work with what they have, which is to say not much as probably even the devs don’t have a detailed roadmap because they cannot quantify how much of an effort will be to fix stuff
