i have a few icons on my desktop but mostly i keep it clutter free... my folders on the other hand... yeah.
I live in my download folder but once i get a couple of apps or files that are linked they go into a folder or get moved out into various places around my drive. Search tools are fucking useless on windows so i tend to have to organise stuff and i can't be arsed using a 3rd party indexer so i tend to just keep folders about. Never found an organizational format that works for me and if i do come up with one i forget it pretty quickly and go back to my old ways.

Sometimes I try to organize my Desktop, clean up the trash, leave the icons I should use and so on, thinking "this time I will start to use it".

But nope, Between pinned icons on the taskbar and typing the other programs name on Start Menu I actually never see it. In fact ... let me check... yup.. that's either the default Windows wallpaper or something very close to it.

Now... as for folders.... let's just say I really like my partitions and folders. I have 6 local drive letters (well, 7 if you count a small SSD I use for gamepass games), plus 2 network ones and also one stupid G: that the most recent update of Google Drive forced on me.

And lots and lots of folders in all that mess. So I'm not only old school, but also "crazy school".

I tend to prefer just searching from the start menu these days rather than using desktop shortcuts for most things.

Couldn't live without files and folders though, I hate how that stuff is much more hidden on mobile platforms.

My desktop is just beautiful 4K wallpapers and my recycle bin. All the apps I use on my PC regularly are on my taskbar, while the rest are one search away.

Now my work PC is completely different. My desktop is a sewer of guidance and temporary files (letters, calculations, various forms).

Desktop pictures should have space on the left or right of whatever the image is so you can see your icons. The one posted in that tweet is total shit for a desktop background.

Finished Grime and it was ok, a perfectly fine 6/10 with an amazing inicial setup and presentation that never quite delivers on the inicial promisse. Took me ~18h with a bit of exploration and secret hunting although nowhere near 100% as I couldn't be bothered to complete the map. This is not a metroidvania like I inicially thought, it's a 2d souls game which is refreshing to see as there aren't many around (I personally can only think of Salt and Sanctuary which was excellent).
The game has problems, some quite severe.
  1. The game is too dark, which is a problem when the combat is based on pattern recognition and twitch reflexes and it's very hard to see the enemies' animations and act accordingly. I believe this was also the fact I always left each playing session with a minor headache.
  2. It's very unbalanced both in terms of rewards and diversity. There's 3 attack stats (strengh, dex and ressonance) but there aren't good weapons for 2 of those stats, dex is the only one with a single weapon with A scalling. Add the fact that each stat has barely any effect on your damage output (we're talking 0.4 increase on that A scalling dex weapon per dex point) and it's unrewarding to invest. The same can be said for hp and stamina and their stats (+5hp per stat when enemies hit for 80... wow thanks).
  3. Some enemies attack patterns are perfect to stun lock you, and even kill you 100 to 0, if you miss a parry or miss a dodge. It doesn't happen to often but happens enough times to be frustating and it even happens in some bosses. And since the game is stingy about healing items you either pray that you won't be hit again or port back and try the whole thing again.
  4. I believe my controller isn't the problem because it works flawlessly in other games but some key presses were basically ignored and there's a noticeable latency between every button press and your character action.
There's also a lot of positives worth mentioning. The game is very pretty (when you can see it) and the music is also beautifull. The whole high-risk/high-reward parry/healing system is interesting, although 5 parries per heal is a bit much, and the prey/traits system was very well made and though out.

Don't forget to pause/cancel your humble monthly as tomorrow is billing day.
Which reminds me, earlier in the thread someone mentioned that wanted the orwell game. Who was it?

my desktop is usually empty. sometimes i have a wallpaper, but as some have said, I dont see that apart from startup/shutdown. to launch stuff, I just use the taskbar and the start menu (which, in KDE Plasma, you can customize to your hearts content). I like having a choice and I support people having the own choice. Wanna use search only? sure, go for it! wanna have huge icons on your desktop? not for me, but if it suits you! wanna have a macos-style launcher? be my guest! just ... please never assume others like the same stuff as you and advocate for a one-size-fits-all-solution. :)

Does the absence of our all favorite dear leader mean that we can now make a thread for hentai?

I want a mention about, put on glasses :blobnerd:, Lingerie Office and Slut Girl. Super Taboo optional. Dat teacher issue, though :sweaty-blob:
Might add Accelerando with a NSFL warning, I guess.

Played a couple of demos

Tormented Souls
Broadly liked this, as I’m a big sucker for classic Resi etc, but I’m rather wary of going for the full game though given the utterly crap map, and the puzzles even in the short demo were still a bit obtuse, most specifically the Skeleton key puzzle

Voice of Cards
Seems pretty decent from the demo, but it’s clearly early game and so rather simple, but I’ve little jrpg experience so I don’t mind tbh.
There’s not enough I think here to make a judgment on whether to go for the full game I think yet, so I’ll wait for impressions, particularly on the level of Yoko Taro weirdness on display, as the demo has none

IIRC they're updating the map to be a proper videogame map that shows where you are and opens through a button and not a real map you need to pull out of your pocket and figure the fuck out.

question, by the way, speaking of the photoshop i pirated

can i transfer it between computers by just copy pasting the files
because if that's the case, holy fucking crap, i would actually be able to do something on this laptop and not just make MS paint images

Ok that would be great, even in an area as small as the demo it was fast becoming a problem

didn't play too much of the Voice of Cards demo, but it seems like a fairly generic JRPG aside from the card-based presentation gimmick. It's a Yoko Taro game, so I'm sure the story will end up subverting all those tropes, but I'm not sure the same can be said for the gameplay. unwishlisted that pretty fast

How do you guys deal with this much clutter on the desktop? I don't even have the recycle bin on mine I always use shift + del.
I try to keep my desktop empty of anything but the wallpaper. Any important app either launches at startup or has a shortcut in the task bar I can easily click and I can access everything from the start menu in a couple clicks. Seeing the one's clients have while at work make me cringe. Literally no usable space all files and pdfs that you can in no way navigate.

I mean, it should be able to , depending on how it is cracked, if it's cracked

A good write-up about the importance of organic storytelling and world-building in Trails in the Sky FC.

Thanks for posting this, will fully read it later. Just having read the first few paragraph, and as I expected it's about the use of NPC dialogues. It's so amazing how well Falcom is using this one element to for so many different things in their story telling. Absolutely amazing. Especially how they are so consistently good at it. From FC, to SC, 3rd, Zero, Azure, and Cold Steel 1, which is the one I'm currently playing. The writing continues to shine, and the NPCs are easily the biggest reason for it.

Big news out of china. It seems that Tencent and Netease are going to be very pro china child regulations. What that means is that they are in favor of the stuff protecting kids and only being able to play 1 hour a day on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sunday.

There is a lot more to it but in a way they want to crack down on Steam, Steam doesn't have to obey Chinese law persay and offer the same stuff those companies do.

So the thing is that going forward it's possible that any company that is owned and stuff by Tencent or Netease may not have anything to do with Steam or Epic.

I know that people talked a while ago about the "boogieman" that was getting owned by Tencent and well I don't think that was without reason because The Chinese government could say something and then Tencent would be forced to obey (so rip Platinum games?)

Maybe nothing will come out of it or maybe in the coming year or so we may see a big chance happen.

Downunder.
Everything working fine so far, not much diference tho'.
Now try playing a DirectDraw/DX8-based game. Will it still work?

EDIT: Don't forget that today is the last day to pause your Humble Choice membership if you don't want your credit card/Paypal to be charged tomorrow.

It is so hard to say, at the moment it seems more like major gaming companies in China are attempting to appease regulators to prevent them from being hit by more regulation. Since what has been proposed is not legally binding, who knows if there will be any real bite to this latest crackdown, but it really does feel like the CCP wants to see demonstrable change this go around.

So far it is completely up in the air what will happen to the parts of the industry outside of China (e.g. Will Tencent/Netease/others be force to divest from companies outside of China? Will companies they own outside of China still be held to the proposals? etc.) That said, I could definitely foresee less games being published outside of China from the major companies. I just hope the Chinese indie scene can still find ways to operate as usual as there have been some amazing indies out of China.

If the worst case scenario does occur and China blocks outside PC platforms...yeesh, it could be a bleak next few years until things stabilize given how much the industry been able to grow due to expansion into China. I would say VPNs could offset, but those have also seen crackdowns from time-to-time. I suppose we will see within the next few months/years. I wonder if Steam China would make the cut?
