While the new challenge that we tackled with this title produced a disappointing outcome, we are certain that the GaaS approach will grow in importance as gaming becomes more service oriented.
It's the MMO craze all over again. And probably just like MMOs, with GaaS a very select few will find lightning in a bottle and all the others will fail miserably to retain the players, because there are too many options.

I really do not need any other games to play, but gosh I am wanting a space game like Elite Dangerous with walkable space stations and/or futuristic cities. I feel like nothing ever replaced Freelancer. Everspace 2 looks so good, but still lacks some of the aspects I liked from Freelancer....
I know it's not exactly the same but may I suggest X4: Foundations? We have a thread |OT| - X4: Foundations - In a galaxy (kinda) far far away (shameless self-promotion.) You can walk around space stations, pilot all the ships, build fleets, create space stations, etc. All in glorious offline singleplayer.

Hmmm, i see the Geforce Now stuff is spreading around again.

I didn't scrape the dates when i initially got the archive of listed games. But to me it seems to be mostly estimates rather than actual dates. Here's three examples.
I'm a bit confused why these dates are so important in other forums?
I imagine at best these were internal studio targets, so lets say a game targets January 2022, then they announce the game and say releasing July 2022. Already pushing the release out from that leak, then as it gets closer to July they move it to November and at worse to 2023. In the end what did that leak actually show?

I just saw that leak and according to that Returnal PC port is being developed by Climax Studios. Wasn't Housemarque the real developer? Weird
Climax Studios has helped Housemarque in the past with different ports to consoles while Housemarque was focused on the main task.

game companies wanting to do block chains, I don't get it, isn't that just putting server things on everyone instead of hosting it themselves? The MTXs will still be just the same.

the point of say bitcoin is so that there isn't a single entity that controls it or a central server that is the only access.

Fever dream doom scenario that probably couldn’t happen without running into gambling legislation eventually:

I think part of the appeal (for game businesses) is to have a mechanism that allows people to choose to spend a stupid amount of time in your game for a chance to earn tradeable items with non-negligible real world value so that even ostensibly F2P players will bring in direct value by selling items through some kind of auction house type system, where a proportional cut of the transaction goes to the developer.

People already indirectly create value for online games by way of participation. If you now append to that a possibility to make actual money off of it intrinsically, then you are also monetizing the efforts of the player base more directly from them trading items and creating demand. The slickest way would be to have some sort of randomization element to items similar to Borderlands guns. People already farm for an inordinate amount of time for god rolls in games like Destiny without any intrinsic value to it. Can you imagine the truckloads of money a popular game could make?

But people were pretty down on the real money auction house in Diablo… Were we simply not ready at the time or will they go some other route?

Think I will do the preload on my Series S for Forza.

EA and ubisoft may claim that the future of gaming is in Bitcoin/NFT and whatever else. However they have 2 hurdles to get past. The console manufacturers and the consumer. Yes the can put these things on PC with little kickback, Valve being the only outright objector at the moment. However they will want the widest reaching audience they can get. And that means consoles as well.

I didn't scrape the dates when i initially got the archive of listed games. But to me it seems to be mostly estimates rather than actual dates. Here's three examples.
  1. Actraiser Renaissance is listed with the release date of October 1st, It actually launched September 23rd.
  2. An "Untitled Hangar 13 Project" has a date of August 2nd, most likely the one that just got cancelled.
  3. Horizon Forbidden West has a date of September 2022, which only really makes sense if Sony didn't delay the game out of 2021.
The most likely explanation is that Nvidia had some basic access to release windows from the developers, and they just filled out the dates to fit around them.
Steam in particular lets developers fill in the "release date" section with whatever text they want, New Blood's stuff notably uses "SOON™" (with the trademark and everything.) for titles that don't have proper release windows, as an example.

But Nvidia's backend specifically requires an exact date to be added, from the looks of things.
Steam requires date too, but it can be placeholder, adding text will hide it. Expect that upcoming games list will indirectly leak it, because it sorts by that date.

"we failed hard , but dont worry GaaS is the future and we will try it again "
Or maybe they'll move on to NFT.

But, isn't that actually a good thing? I mean looking at what Valve does with all the "hats" in games or even trading cards but instead of it being so tied to Steam one could trade those where ever you wanted. That is the only upside I see to it using blockchains instead of traditional hosted server style.

That is what I mean that the MTXes would still be the same but would give users more power over them.

Wouldn't that give you the ability to "cash out" and therefore inching closer and closer into gambling territory?

It's neat to the extent that you get more ownership over acquired digital items and can theoretically translate that into earnings. What I find less appealing about it is that it's a large speculative bubble that people can overinvest in and then lose a lot on. The risk of it is largely on players' shoulders whereas companies can sit back and watch the money trickle while players work for them at an effective hourly pay that will probably amount to sweatshop rates. I find the current trend of games monopolizing your attention by way of timed challenges, timed events and battle passes somewhat disturbing already. If this "play to earn" model is attached to that, it becomes an even more blatant way of having players create value for a company without being on payroll.

But looking at the market we have now on Steam it does usually stabilises itself. And sure it is gambling since you need to gamble to get the item in the first place but the market kind of works against that since you can just buy the item you want. Whole Steam market could be a blockchain and nothing in it would change other than we as users would get more ownership of the items. And if steam went down we could still trade the items(but they would be useless since the games wouldn't exists anymore).

stay safe SMTV fans, for the spoilers and leaks are upon us

a 4channer made a twitch account, botted it to have at least 5k followers, and managed to get a review copy of smtv like that, and has posted a good amount of screenshots from the game, which to be honest, aren't very spoilery except for one, but it's the smt cliche of "a character transforms" which was teased at least 5 times in the trailers, and to be honest, this leak actually made the plot more of a mystery with only a small part of it being deductable

The marketplace does indeed run into gambling legislation, but being able to buy the item doesn't negate it. Like, Dota 2's and CSGO's marketplace trading are disabled in Belgium and The Netherlands due to gambling laws there. But unlike these "play to earn models", the issue here is tied to the items coming from paid lootboxes, which crossed with the ability to cash out makes it gambling. When you overlay the lootbox mechanic onto playing a game and getting drops, it isn't that different except it's your time that's the stake. I don't think that's very healthy and legislators should look into it imo, but because there is no monetary stake it may not be considered gambling per se.

Fuck those FH5 reviews. I have already too many games to play.

Still not sure wherever to get standard or premium. I have stopped buying special editions of games that contains expansions as Im not sure how the original game will actually be, but the FH expansions so far has been great.

The fact that the expansions for games isn't included in game pass makes game pass a non-starter for me anyway.

No way in hell Im buying anything on the windows store. There isn't even cross-save/progression between winstore and Steam either, so playing FH5 on game pass and then buying the game on Steam with expansions means I have to replay the whole things again, which is why I havet yet to buy FH4 on Steam.

Finished Ring of Pain for the first time and had a great time with it. Took me ~4h (+1h for the winning run) to unlock the items needed to get past the midway point and through to the end. In fact the first time I managed to get past level 8 I reached the end which is kinda funny but simptomatic of this game's biggest problem - heavy reliance in rng, especially in the first levels, which will inevitably make or break your run at the midway point, unlike something like StS.
Still had a good time and have no issues recommending it.
Shoutout to this OP charm I found near the end and made me impossible to hit.

GTA 3, VC and SA remastered steam packages got updated today again (individual updates, not global, individual are the ones we like) so, there's movement at the very least.

The point of MTX is always to scam people out of their money. Bitcoin and this NFT craze is the next big scam, so obvious why EA and Ubisoft think it's the future of gaming, or whatever.

The scaling of the portable itself is nice, I suppose the real thing is 0.500 ?
That being said, it seems to use video of other versions of the games, so it's, once again, not reliable. Or I misunderstood.

In a way, maybe I'm asking for something that never has been provided by other manufacturers, but given the relative novelty of the product, it would be super cool to have a RELIABLE presentation of what some games will look like. And not some fucking 4k youtube video inserted in a scalable gif.

There is a difference between scammers having a target and tech itself being a scam. With that said I am fully sure EA and ubi looks at those as potential scams.

I still GENUINELY don't get this

NFTs and Crypto remain the playthings of speculators, that's all. How the f*ck do you expect this to have any meaningful contribution to games?
By making players contribute to Andrew Wilson's wallet.

It's more like a late stage capitalism dream of putting all the economical power on the hands of billionaires.

I thínk there isn't really a natural end to the crypto "bubble" since it was never attached to any real world value/commodity from the start so if enough people are and remain all stupid together it might just keep going for a long time, maybe forever. If it does, selling NFT variants of ingame items is going to increase the profit margin so of course companies already in the business of extracting maximum profit out of next to nothing want in.

As long as its mostly unregulated, it's gonna keep going as is. Eventually goverments will want their piece of the pie and so things will calm down until the next get rich quick scheme shows up.

Oh right, fuck me I had forgotten to ask. Having applied the AMD update offered on windows update in Windows 11, are there still patchs I must install to mitigate the performances lost ? I saw several articles talking about some patch offered by AMD directly, but are those needed or redundant with the windows update fix ?

Any recommendations for comfy and ergonomic chairs? Thinking of getting a new one for my desk (no gaming branded stuff please, I find that too tacky).

Aeron chairs are considered absolute best in class.

I've been using one at work for years and I've yet to see an office chair that matches the comfort & quality.

Don't let the price tag scare you as they're readily available for $500 at online outlet stores.

I bought an Aeron chair since I'm working from home and it is the best chair I've ever used!
