Reading some comments and reasons why people skipped Guardians and I am starting to feel that we truly just deserve games that are filled with grind and MTX to the brim. Publishers finally won, they finally made people not wanting to spend 60$ on anything that has below 50h of content no matter what that content is.
Oooofff, I had written a huge rant about this but I don't think it's worth clogging up the thread.... basically the game had so many things going against it: going against current trends, terrible regional price, the "it's not the MCU" thing, the crappy Avengers game that also hit gamepass one month earlier, and so on. And then the Marketing completely failed in showing any of it's qualities.

I took a huge risk and Guardians was amazing, but it's not hard to see why so many people didn't. Even now, how do I recommend it without also adding "it will probably be -50% very soon" :(

For me, I about skipped it precisely because I thought was going to be a grindy game with a vessel for future MTX. Truly, I had no idea what sort of game it would be until I saw a few more videos of it at launch. I would chalk it up to the Avengers effect for me.

Honestly, I do not know how you show a game like this off since its winning points, the dialogue and story, really need context. Out of context, the dialogue comes across a bit stilted. The combat is serviceable, especially as you unlock more abilities, but showing it off highlights the problem I had above that I thought it would be something it is not.

YosP?

What if it actually had something to do with him.
Not really, YOSP got one but I bet it was running well already, however, I do think it makes sense to check it out and see if they can make Proton compatibility better.

Ehh no regional pricing and the game had a terrible first impression. I legit thought it was going to be torn apart on the reviews.
this this this

people seem quick to forget that this game had a TERRIBLE pre-release showing, with pretty much every thread on forums up until only a couple of weeks before launch talking about "hoping that it ends up good"
good reviews aren't enough when the game has not caught people's interests for months on end.

I've said this sort of thing before on here enough times but it isn't enough anymore for your game to simply be good.
That alone does not mean you will find success.
It's easy to rail "bah modern gaming audiences" but that's a very shallow look at the situation imo

Exactly, there are thousands of good games released on steam every year that get no traction whatsoever, be it discoverability, marketing, bad predecessor, boycotts, wrong release window, too few possible customers, etc.
And GotG seems like it hit more than half of those reasons.

Could I realistically be granted a refund for a game bought on October 16th ? (on steam, eh)

It could also come down to something much simpler that I feel a lot of people neglect:

The audience for Marvel movies != The audience for Marvel video games. Particularly not when these games don't have the likeness or voice of the actors associated with these characters in the MCU. In short, these games don't have nearly as much of a "Built-in captive audience" as Square Enix fooled themselves into believing they had when they yanked Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal away from their own "failed" IPs - and shrunk the margins even further by not even getting the MCU likenesses of the characters secured for the games.

Pretty much every pre-MCU "Marvel Game" that was successful did so by being as true to the Comics as possible, and it helped like hell that there's far more of an overlap between Comic Superfans and Video Game Players than there is between MCU watchers and the latter.

I just have to post this!
Ziggurat is bringing back one of my favorite simulators from when I was a kid! Incredibly hard, but IMO extremely visually impressive for the time!

It's a shame what they did to Silent Hunter franchise. They were awesome but we have had some decent sub games over the last few years so it's not all bad news.

Really annoyed by Forza Horizon 5 release management. Play it for the amount of a sub, but you won't be able to play on the Deck (you will be, but more convoluted). Or pay 60 and get the game on Steam. Then, if you pay a premium you can play a few days earlier. But the cherry on top, you can put 50 on game pass, get every DLC but the game, and play earlier too.

This is greedy as fuck, but options are nice. Now, if only they had cross progression the choice would be a lot easier.

Isn't Gamepass the same as using the shitty Windows Store underneath though? If so, nah. I'll put up with Steam thanks.

True, but, and I don't say it often because I know that doesn't help others less fortunate on that front : I have had zero issues with Game Pass. It has an horrible UI, download speed fluctuate as all hell, but apart from that, meh, it works.
Would I prefer a Steam Pass, my, that's not even a question worth asking, but it is what it is.

You can always... not get it. ;)
Just saying. If you feel it's excessive, don't support it.

I simply stopped buying pretty much any Koei Tecmo game (other than, say, the Ninja Gaiden re-releases, which have no further DLC), because enough is enough.
They clearly don't see their customers as anything other than "milking cows", and on top of pre-order exclusive content, platform exclusive content, deluxe edition exclusive content, they usually have multiple season passes, and an extensive range of DLCs that are not even included on those season passes.
My funds are not unlimited, and I chose to spend them somewhere else.

Words of wisdom I try to apply on a general basis. But I'm genuinely interested in playing this game. There are no bad options, just for fuck's sake, please finish this industry transformation and discover cross progression please.

I guess it's really dependent on the game. I mean, several KoeiTecmo games are right up my alley, but they crossed the line several years ago now. The line where I don't even look for sales on them.

With FH4 I could understand no cross progression but why not with FH5? Maybe it was too far into development for them to try to figure something out?

This sucks because at some point I plan to buy the game (ultimate edition with all DLC) on both Steam and Xbox. It would be nice if all my save data transfered and stuff or if the Windows Store worked a lot better. Because being able to do something like play the game on my Xbox with quick resume and also being able to play on the Steam Deck would be amazing!!!!!!!!! Would the Xcloud be able to help with that a bit?

partially agree. I don't think Marvel games need to be as accurate to the comics as possible (I wouldn't say the PS4/5 Spider-Man games are, and I doubt Insomniac's Wolverine game will be either), but if Crystal Dynamics/Eidos don't want to maintain continuity with the MCU or pay through the nose for the voice/likeness rights of the film actors, they should put more effort into distinguishing their games from the MCU, either through a more stylized art direction, a distinct lineup of characters, or both..

if anything, I think the ersatz-MCU problem may be even more acute with GOTG than it was with Avengers. Since the James Gunn MCU GOTG are the only version of any of those characters that the vast majority of the audience is familiar with, and since the game's depiction of those characters is so obviously derived from the MCU versions rather than the comics, the lack of the actual MCU license just stands out all the more and makes it feel more like a knockoff than an original take on the IP. A very expensive knockoff, but a knockoff nonetheless.

(note that I haven't actually played GOTG, it's possible that the characters do become more distinct from the Gunn versions over the course of the game, just commenting from a marketing standpoint here)

Never tried Xcloud, but I think Wok had good results, and yeah, it could be a solution if you have nothing against playing the MS version. Really dependent on the quality you will get and what you consider playable.

Someone alluded some days ago that cross progression wasn't in it because of greedy reasons. I don't know, it strikes me more as a blow to double dippers.

Man I don't like these early access things, I'm quite hyped for Forza Horizon 5 but I don't want to pay extra € for early release
Like, FFXIV Endwalker has it but it's with normal preorder and I don't think it's that bad.
That Elden Ring gameplay should better refocus my hype tomorrow :thinking-blob:

To be fair, I don't think it's their call to make. Given that this has happened with two Marvel games in a row from the same Publisher, I think the fault lies at the feet of the Suits who sat down CD and EM and told them they're making a Marvel game instead of the sequels they had planned for their ongoing IPs - Square Enix are notorious cheapasses who are often only motivated by Moneyhats, and the only thing they could see were the Dollarsigns in their eyes when they managed to get the licenses to Avengers/GOTG, with no understanding of the actually appeal behind the licenses which resulted in them not making the essential expenditure to license the likenesses of the actors.

But on the other hand that doesn't explain why these idiots keeps going faux-MCU instead of full comics glory. My Captain America wears a strange goofy blue scale mail. Accept no substitute.

Also, the last GOTG movie was released 4 years ago, and the last one with the characters 2 years ago. And AFAIK GOTG isn't that much of a household name like Spiderman or whatever.

Probably because Faux MCU is what the idiot Suits are mandating, and/or possibly mixed with these studios just not exactly having a passion for Marvel IPs, particularly when these games their bosses told them to make completely sidelined their own internally developed IPs.

You have to remember the premise that the Suits who put them on Marvel Duty want the MCU audience, not the Comics audience - But they don't want to actually spend the necessary capital to get the actual MCU licenses, because Square Enix is loathe to spend a single Yendolleuro that wasn't paid to them by a 1st Party.

Guardians does this. It's got a shit ton of comics references, Easter eggs and costumes.

no, it means the MS store has done its usual trick of either downloading the game twice or stealing space from a hard drive
I just started the preload and it triggered the download of 2 versions of the game, "Forza Horizon 5" (not listed otherwise but seems to be the gamepass version) and "Forza Horizon 5 Standard Edition" (this one lists as included in gamepass). After a couple minutes the launcher canceled the Standard Edition download, returned my disk space to me and just one version of the game is downloading (for) now...

That is after the first attempt to install the xbox app crashed my system... checking out gamepass again a year later to see if things have improved is off to a great start, oh well, it was just 1€.

true, that would be a budget decision made by the higher-ups (assuming Marvel Studios would be open to it, which isn't a foregone conclusion imo), but in fairness, I have to imagine that getting the voice/likeness rights for Evans, RDJ, Pratt, etc. would be really fucking expensive, even by AAA standards. heck, even What If? couldn't get them for all the main MCU actors, and that was a show that was actually made by Marvel Studios
