I've been saying this for years: SEGA's (and now ATLUS's) promises are hollow.
Whenever I say so, people always jump in to defend them, with arguments that "ports take time", and recently "oh, Covid surely impacted their plans".
SEGA isn't a 10 people company, with limited resources. A company like SEGA, even just the European and US branches, has plenty of resources, both financial (to hire porting companies) and in terms of staff, to release a steady string of ports. And they frequently do so for other platforms.

When Valkyria Chronicles was released on PC (back in 2014, 7 years!), the good sales lead to promises that, from that point on SEGA would be aggressive in porting their games, both their back catalogue and new titles, to PC.
What have they done since then, especially in terms of back catalogue? They released a couple of Platinum ports, plus a handful of Yakuza games (some even lacking content, like the slot/casino games from some entries that were in the console versions), and that's that. In 7 years.

I remind you that even after good sales of Valkyria Chronicles 1 and 4, they released Valkyria Revolution on every platform under the sun, except... PC, the platform that helped revive the series.
Also, the Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio (the guys behind Yakuza) did several games that never reached PC. Yes, I know of the supposed problems with Judgment (which, quite frankly, I don't buy it). But what about Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise? Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown?

When the first Yakuza games sold well, new promises of ports came. What happened? How many titles did we actually get?
Heck, SEGA even went and made their latest Sonic port exclusive to a single store, ignoring the platform where people have been buying their PC titles from.

And with ATLUS, which again, they are part of SEGA (no matter how you want to paint it), people were all happy with a port of a 10+ year old game (oh, and that "gimped" port of Catherine, that was outdated even before release), and what did we get in a year and a half? A port of a 18 year old game, Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne (Persona 5 Strikers was not developed by Atlus, so that PC release is surely on Koei Tecmo).

They keep promising more PC ports, but their efforts have been mostly going to porting titles to Microsoft platforms, and PC continues to be all about their European strategy studios, and their constant stream of DLCs and titles.

2020's lack of releases and ports of their Japanese titles was due to Covid.
2021 apparently is the same thing (of course, that doesn't impact their output on Switch, PS4/5, or even Xbox, only PC is affected).
I wonder next year, 2022, 8 years after that Valkyria Chronicles port that was supposed to "kickstart" things, what the excuse will be.
on the bright side at least Yakuza seems like a day 1(day 1 as far as Western releases go anyways) PC series going forward now, that's something

That is, if they don't sign an exclusivity deal with... Stadia.

In truth, they released a single Yakuza game (the last one) on day one. I wouldn't take that as a sure sign that things will be like this from now on. Common sense would tell you after the good sales of Valkyria Chronicles 1 and 4, Valkyria Revolution would get a PC release on day one. It didn't. It didn't even get any sort of release 4 years later.

And who's to tell we won't get another Judgment series in our hands. I mean, the next title from the studios is supposed to be another spin-off. We are yet to get any Yakuza spin-off title, be it the samurai games, Dead Souls, Judgment, or even other titles like Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise.
And speaking of Judgment, people take those "rumours" that the games weren't released on PC because of the management of the main actor, but I remind you that no official information or reasoning ever came out, other than they made a deal to release it on Stadia.
I definitely won't give SEGA the benefit of doubt. Here's a company that, because certain actors in the games had legal problems (like rumoured drug use), they recalled the games, and replaced the actors, by recording new voice-acting, and motion-capturing other people. If they can do that, and if the problem with Judgment was with with a single actor, they could easily replace him for the western version.

The PC port is an utter catastrophe, but if you have the will and ability to deal with that, and the hardware to power through its rather terrible performance, the game itself is -- to me -- proof that Gust has still "got it".

It's a completely unabashed love letter to magical girl anime shows and tropes, but the execution of that, especially on an artistic/aesthetic level is simply superb. Everything from the character designs over the abilities to even the menus (wow, someone there really loves UI design) oozes confidence, in a we-know-exactly-what-we-want-and-how-to-create-it way.

Beyond the aesthetics, the combat and progression systems are actually really interesting and fresh, however, like the vast majority of JRPGs (in my experience) it falls into the trap of becoming far too easy if you use all the systems well -- in fact it's probably worse about this than most. Personally, I don't mind that overly much -- it's kind of a nice reward to have your study of the mechanics, theorycrafting and min-maxing rewarded with basically oneshottng everything -- but it's still a significant drawback.

I enjoyed the game. Tried the demo for BR2 and wasn't feeling it for some reason. Maybe I'm not in the mood for this kind of game right now.

Guardians of the Galaxy hit Overwhelmingly Positive on Steam with 6,871 reviews. In comparison, Avengers is Mixed with 16,641 reviews. I started the game today and it's pretty charming so far, but I've only played about an hour. I'm playing on Xbox Series X in quality mode and it's visually super impressive at times.

Perfect, middle finger for them and I will just spend my money on different products, really tired of their shit.

If it's any consolation, I finished SMT V last night and it honestly feels half baked at points. Only a few characters get any sort of development and some might as well not exist at all. Also the few dungeons there are feel pretty disappointing. The game desperately needs a Maniax update to flesh out the characters and to add a few new dungeons. Considering it's Atlus's MO to rerelease a base game with new content for virtually every title, I think they'll release an updated edition for other consoles and PC in a year or two.

Should I give Tametsi another shot?
I played it a little bit couple years ago but wasn't feeling it. I think I remember being put off by the mixing of varying elements and their sizes. It seems like it's a lot of that?
Maybe I should give it another go.


Though those two Globesweeper games might be more up my alley.
But since I continue to be broke, to the wishlist they go.

I think Tametsi is very much worth the effort, but (if you have it) Hexcells may a better entry point into this type of puzzle game. Tametsi gets challenging pretty fast, whereas Hexcells has a much smoother learning curve (if you start with the first game anyway). Hexcells, as the name would suggest, is also all hexagonal shapes only, unlike Tametsi which varies it up as you already discovered. The first time I played Tametsi, I also did not stick with it. It was only after completing all of the Hexcells games and returned to it that the game clicked for me.

It is not a consolation by any means, but again, I'm kind of tired about them in general for all of this, in general I feel like my day 1 purchases mean nothing.

I've been interested in Sword and Fairy for a while but Sword and Fairy 7 had mixed reviews on steam due to framerate issues and bugs but more recent reviews have been positive and even the negative reviews are based purely off performance. I'll check the DF video and if it's not too bad i'll keep it in mind for christmas. It seems much improved over the previous entries at least.

First they get the PS4 money, then they get the Switch money and later they will collect the PC money.
Some will even triple dip.
Release is April next year, have they categorically said there is no PC port yet?
I wouldn't hold my breath, to be honest, Steam version most likely not happening.

Honestly i could not tell you what score any of the games i play have got on any of the critic sites. I watch gamesplay videos and read impressions from here and other forums and make my mind up from that. I know they're important for a lot of internal industry metrics but i don't look at any of them. I actually forget that meta or open critic exist 99% of the time.

If the tools are there you can add whatever the hell you want to a game be it Ronald Reagan, FluffyPopcorn Pony or the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. That's what modding is about. It's up to you if you want to keep it lore friendly or add Thomas The Tank Engine.

Basically you need to start at places like ModDB, NexusMods and Reddit and then branch into different modding reddits and possibly discords. You will need to find the engine that is used and find some tools to unpack and possibly decrypt the various data type and files used by that engine. You can then work through the scripts to understand them and add your own events, triggers etc or maybe start by replacing an image like the title screen then move on to textures, then move on to changing a model or audio cue or you mod an existing creature/entity to change the way it works.

Have a look at the emulation community as once the files are on PC and run in an emulator then it's more likely that tools and tutorials will be available.
I'd expect a LOT of command line tools and scripts though. There are GUI Tools like Noesis which can help with models and their scripts and probably Blender Plugins too.


I haven't looked at the SMT Modding community so i have no idea what their tools are like. Don't expect a drag and drop full-on GUI Studio app though. I really doubt that exists.

Boy of boy, it's been a while. Now that my long Thanksgiving weekend is coming to an end, here's what I've been playing.

Very recently I've been playing Duke Nukem 1 (because of the inclusion of the turkey health item), and that led me back to playing Commander Keen 4 & 5 with Commander Genius. All of these I beat before, but I was in that nostalgic mood. I have been dabbling in the Halloween Map Jam 4 for Quake 1, and still grinding my way through the Faithless triolgy for Heretic (which is absolutely immense and taking me months to finish).

In modern games I've been playing a lot of Guardians of the Galaxy which is fantastic, beautiful, witty and so naturally nostalgic.

I've cranked through most of Forza Horizon 5 (just doing weekly challenges now, gotta unlock that McLauren F1 for free). Not my favorite FH, but definitely beautiful and still fun.

I've forced myself to play a bunch of Halo Infinite MP to get a genuine feel for it and give it a fair chance. I do not like it. I do not like the levels, the player counts, the modes, the weapon spawns, the changes to the weapons from previous Halo games, the weapon balance, the battle pass, the way you can't just choose to play a public oddball round, the microtransactions, the progression, nor really anything. It's probably the worst Halo game I ever gave the time of day to, my favorite MP being Halo 1 and 3, but 2 and Reach were fun too... All that said, I look forward to the single player. I have some trepedations that I still won't like how they've changed the weapons, making it slightly more dull and drab, but still... Going back to older Halo games, they're just so much better.

Also dabbling in some, Ghosts N Goblins Resurrection, which is great, and probably the most fun I've had with of its ilk since Maximo. It may be my favorite of the series other than the spinoff Gargoyle's Quest line.


Prior to these I was playing a bunch of Metroid Dread, which is just great solid gameplay. Arthurian Legends, which is an amazing retro style FPS, like a long last Build Engine classic. The Diablo 2 Remaster, which is my first time through the later acts of Diablo 2 (I've always enjoyed it but was never engaged enough to finish the game prior). I got Beat Saver back up and running in Beat Saber and saw what great new courses people were making. You Spin Me Around was done brilliantly. I love when the author of a course really understands the choreography and style of the dance and can incorporate that into the game. There's a bunch of others I've been playing, dabbled in Returnal, which is OK. Thanksgiving also made me think about Demon's Souls for PS5, but as I finished the game last year I didn't play any. Finally, Binding of Isaac (the most recent one with all the DLC), is still such a golden, addictive experience...

And finally in the most taboo subject of all, Operation Lovecraft: Fallen Doll is really impressive, I didn't expect a hardcore pornographic game to get so much care. Maybe some nega-Digital Foundry will take a look.


Addendum: I also want to give a shout out to the best user mod of the year, Combined Arms 2 for Doom. Astounding, amazing weapons mod. Also Walkabout Mini Golf, the best new VR game of 2021, which perfectly captures mini golf. Highfleet for being different and bold and fascinating and deep and beautiful. Lego Builders Journey for being literally photoreal 3D and possessing interesting storytelling. HROT for being what Dusk couldn't be and actually making a genuine feeling boomer shooter. Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart for really being like a pretty Pixar game. R-Type Final 2 and the new Pokemon Snap just for existing. Subverse for also being way better and sexier than it would have been in any other reality. And Loop Hero will probably be my GOTY for its addictiveness, style, and combination of genres.

(now that I got all that out I can vanish for another 6 months)

Wasn't expecting CP2077 and RDR2 to be the top global sellers during the sale. Triple Ayy still too big huh.

Witcher 4 and GTA6 are gonna sell so much. Not expecting either until like 2025 tho. They are gonna take their sweet ass time. Hopefully we get some type of update for CP2077 next week during game awards.

Also don't really care much about 13 sentinels but its still so disappointing we didn't get P3. Oh well at least we got Nocturne and P4. Something is better than nothing.

I'm not even expecting SMTV anymore. Cake is a lie.

P5 is probably the only one that has a chance and that chance is like 15% at this point lol.

calculate the probability of the usual atlus disappointment and you get at least one announcement that is a port, but not more than 3, you'd have the stars alligned and two birthmarks connecting you to the elder gods of Venus to get 4

The objective says "capture the flag"? Doesn't matter, you have to snipe 5 flying vehicles for the weekly challenge, so camp in a corner and don't help your team. Defeat 10 enemies conquering your zone? The game mode now on rotation is Slayer, so quit every game until you get the right one, and so on.

I really hope they change the progression system, because while I can ignore it I know an increasing number of players will play bad just to stay on track with the weekly challenges

Yeah, the way the passes work just promotes shitty matches. Too many people just trying to complete challenges instead of winning which makes modes like Oddball garbage to play.
