When I just want to play for like about 30 mins and not really "turn my brain on" I usually go for the busywork of one of the last open world games I played, which is why the playtime on them can get a bit embarrassing.

Recently that was Forza Horizon 5. Jumped in, did a couple of the tasks/races for the season pass and chased a few of the worthless accolades.

Progress so far after about 29 hours.

I've skipped a few here and there whenever I got really stuck, eventually I'll return to them.
I find I generally enjoy the hex puzzles the most and usually kind of breeze through them. I guess my brain works in hexes.

For some reason sometimes when I think through a multistep solution for some corner of a puzzle all like , since these two hold only one mine, then one of these two is also a mine and and therefore this single one is definitely a mine, and then I just click the reveal button instead of mine button.

Good question... Those kinds of games are precious when you dont have a lot of time – or if you simply dont want to play for hours. I guess for me its usually Overwatch, since a match lasts abour 15 minutes.

Regarding a "No NFT rule" – I know what you mean. But there's always topics here that aren't really Steam-related and just seem to crop back up.

There's sometimes efforts to offload them into other threads, but since this is the hangout thread, as you correctly pointed out, it will always come back to "everything goes" – whether thats talking about exclusives thats aren't on Steam, hardware, anime, covid, work and life struggles, gamepass or (insert other topic that is a frequent guest in this thread). I guess it is what it is – maybe if the thread was called "MetaHangout" instead, it would be better? Or maybe worse, what do I know

Just millions? Don't see Valve caring much unless it's billions. I think Valve is worried this NFT garbage could open it for lawsuits and whatnot, and I don't see a single game changing their position on this much, not when they are already so outspoken on it.

I believe this is correct. The game MIR 4 is apparently a play to earn game and it constantly tops the Steam charts. I think a certain aspect of the game is disabled on the Steam version so it can skirt Valve's rules.

Anyone have any suggestions for some easy to learn, fun to play, with reasonable skill requirements/skill ceiling tabletop games? Something you'd play with older folks, not so kiddy, not too taxing on older brains either and not boring like chess (or I guess Scrabble or Monopoly).

I was thinking something like Settlers of Catan or Risk but maybe there's cooler stuff around, also maybe not so warlike theme to make it viable for the whole fam to play together. Gonna have to see if whatever you suggest is available locally and fully translated etc. too so probably not some niche or super new thing.

It looks like they have Wingspan already but it is pricy. At the moment I'm thinking Carcassonne 20th Anniversary & some Wizard thing for some simpler quicker fun (or is there something else instead of this, also called Fantasy Wizard, google for that + board game and it'll show, it only has cards and a score board).

I really, really like Patchwork. It has a bit of a childish aesthetic, but it's got layers to it. Played tons of games and I'm still stoked every time I get to pull it out. I really like the pattern laying metagame.

Another one I love and is pretty easy to pick up is 7 Wonders: Duel. I prefer playing it with the Pantheon expansion because it adds some mechanics that increase your range of options and minimize the luck factor a tad, but it's probably best to start with the base game and see if you like it beforehand.

Both of these are pretty cheap all things considered, require minimal setup and game length is around 20-30 minutes, but they're only two-player games. 7WD probably has a bit of a higher skill ceiling, but neither are especially complex, if you're looking for something really deep. You can definitely get very good at 7WD, and I have a hard time getting my partner to play it with me anymore :')

Edit: you can try out an online version of 7WD beforehand to see if you like it. It doesn't explain the rules at all though, so you'll have to look up the manual beforehand. I think there are also some very minor rule changes, but I'm not entirely sure. Not very significant in any case.

Ticket to Ride, SmallWorld and Through the Ages: A New Story of Civilization maybe? Those are relatively simple games. To be honest, it's hard to find anything that would be better or at least on par with Settlers of Catan.

Difficulty is always a tricky one to gauge. A few I think are not too difficult while still fun, but I would look into them more:

Cosmic Encounters (Far from my favorite space game, but it is one of the easiest)
Small World (Far from my favorite fantasy game, but easier as well)
7 Wonders
Pandemic (Though may be in bad tastes haha; co-op)
Forbidden Desert (co-op)
Forbidden Island (co-op; easier than desert and pretty cheap)
Ticket to Ride series (I think a few are easier/harder, but overall really easy series)

I am forgetting so many, my best friend is who owns a bunch of board games and we have not played in ages now thanks to the pandemic

I imagine the big reason Valve cares about NFTs is they're in some ways similar to the Steam marketplace and they want devs and publishers to use Steam Marketplace since they get a cut of any transaction.

Stalker dev Super_Prophet is on the Steam forums saying that the game will not be removed from Steam as it hasn't broken any rules. Stalker 2 is not a Blockchain/NFT game and all the NFTs are auctioned off-site before launch.

Let's see if Stalker 2 is NFT Pay2Win over the next few days as i hope they explain and clarify things.

edit: A couple of the devs are on Steam Discussion now:

Blockchain game =/= NFT-related fan rewards. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is not a blockchain-based game.

Also, the items will be activated before the release date.

- That being said, maybe I'm too prudent here, but it's difficult to answer without knowing the people in question. I mean, are they even a little geek adjacent or receptive ? You don't go pointing to a geeky themed game to traditional 'vanilla' folks.

- Azul or Sagrada could be nice elegant games for not too geeky folks.

- Pandemic is superbly accessible, but even before covid the theme was something of a hard sell. But since then they have made approx one version of Pandemic for each inhabitants of a small country. Might be versions with less divisive theme. There was one with the Spanish Flu some years ago (well ok, not an easy sell either), there is one for the fall of Rome, a Cthulhu one, etc.

Yeah, that also makes a lot of sense. Depending on how the Apple vs. Epic case goes, I could see Valve tightening up their rules to disallow any form of payment for in-game items that doesn't use official Steam APIs. Since Valve doesn't fuck with NFTs, that would translate to an automatic ban of nearly all uses of NFTs in games.

The Stalker 2 thing just sounds like they're testing the waters for selling exclusive content or other nonsense in the game tied to NFTs. A very good sign that you should wait a few years after launch to pick it up.

We are VERY often getting games with altered mechanics just after the review cycle so that players have to pay to have balanced gameplay. It's the old bait and switch. Only now we are clearly seeing the bait is already being tested.

I was almost set on getting the Carcassonne 20th Anniversary Edition, now a friend's talking me into just going for Settlers of Catan instead. Stone Age looks really nice...

If it's a first time for several people, the elephant in the room are indeed Carcassonne / Ticket to Ride / Catan. They have not be called gateway games for nothing. Though several games like Wingspan may have inherited the title since I stopped following boardgames.

For this occasion you don't need the big Carc box imho, looks a bit overkill to me. They may or may not like it, and to my knowledge it just adds... oh fuck that, I said nothing, the more I talk about it the more I want it.

And you may consider some card games. Coloretto was a fun one, and for a strict duo play Schotten Totten was good too.
That being said, for groups (7 wonders) or duo (7 wonders duel) is a modern classic.

I'm really, really pissed about this. Stalker 2 was one of the few AAA games that I was still looking forward to, and now this happens.

NFT's should NEVER become the norm in games, so there's no way I'll support this in any way. I've removed the game from my wishlist and put it on ignore instead. I can only hope other fans will do the same, or other devs will follow soon.

My apologies that I'm once again posting negative stuff here on MC, but the amount of gaming-related news that disappoints me is becoming ridiculous lately.
