Again one of my thoughts regarding SE and their studios is that running eastern studios is much more cheaper. And on top of that there are no strict labor laws like in the west. So they get cheaper workforce that works more. On the other side Eidos Montreal just switched to 4 day work weeks, western developer salaries are much higher + other benefits.

Techland's support for Dying Light has been amazing.
Implementation is weird tho. Why can't they add the DLCs to all subs? Seems they only added them to the store bought Standard Edition now but past subs (I somehow have "Dying Light RU+CIS Gift") need to download the game and get the DLC ingame but not directly via Steam?

they also moved to EoS with the final patch :face-with-cold-sweat:
Actually it added EoS in February:

Personally I don't care if a game has EoS or not, having EoS is no different than MS games that come with XBox Live services, it just makes it alot easier for devs to support crossplay between Steam and Epic (and with consoles if they want to?).

I think the concern with EOS is around privacy. I'm not sure that's much of an issue and if EOS was doing something it shouldn't, we'd have probably found out by now.

I do agree with the objections that we shouldn't be centralising these things, however. If Epic decides it doesn't want to run EOS anymore, or the company goes under, or Sweeney finally sells, a whole bunch of online games will stop working overnight unless their developers patch them.

But then to counterbalance that, if every developer managed their own online service we'd probably see thousands of different logins and they'd barely last months before they went down.

Cross-platform play is the future and Epic have really championed that better than most. I personally wish it had been someone else who provided this service, but Valve squandered that opportunity and no one else stepped up.

Seems the fixed it. They added all DLCs to my sub, probably to all the other Standard Edition ones too.

Anyone played this game?

It's from the devs of Van Helsing trilogy and Warhammer 40k: Inquisitor, which I both liked a lot! :cat-heart-blob:
heard good things about it from a friend who play sthrough it right now
will try to loosely translate his impressions:

(3 quotes, each is day after another):
  • I really enjoy the story of twisted Arthurian myths, and so do the variety heroes. The animations are nice and the fights make sense. I'm looking forward to unlocking special characters from morale or events on the map. The feeling of dark fantasy is very good and I don't really know when was the last time I felt that I was really playing dark fantasy without witty companions.
  • So now I have the first act out of four behind me and so far its really fun , the concers I had are being silenced. For example I was afraid there would be only few hero classes (6), and some seemed a little toosimilar. In the end, the games makes up for it with the fact that each of the heroes has their own set of skills. So, for example, Mordred is used differently in the battle than Pelleas even though they have same class, but a bit different skills. Which is just fun.
Plus there is the "One more turn" thing that keeps me playing . Which hasn't happened to me in a while (except Elden Ring).
  • So one more report from King Arthur Knight's Tale. I like how the game doesn't fuc around with stuff and tells a reallydark story. Just now I helped one of my knights clear the village from the undead. Among them were his son, daughter and wife. There was talk of rape and other 18+ things. In the next mission, a child runs up to me and shouts how nice it is that we came to save them. A worm emerges right behind him and just eats him. Plus more and more really dark things ! And especially Christians are the biggest assholes who can mess up anything. :face-with-tears-of-joy:

Hmm, or not.
I'm stumped at the username part. Not sure if I want to use my real name or my username.

I'm easily stumped :thinking-face:

Shit is unclear, is xxx@mastodon.social public ? Will I be able to use a separate pseudonym or will it be xxx ?

Few titles in rotation of late.

Sleeper will be my main course this weekend. I knew the dev was one to look out for after the In Other Waters debut during the height of lockdown. Only a short while into Citizen Sleeper has confirmed that they are straight fire.

Slightly more details:

The highest compliment I can give it so far is that I find that I’ve no desire to fish for NPC lore dumps when it doesn’t make sense.

There are conversation choices that pretty obviously lead to broader explanations and world building. But I simply take a pass when it feels superfluous to my current state of awareness.

“Are you aware of what’s happening to you?”
- Yes
- Happening to me?
(I go with Yes as I self-reflected on this already in the prologue.)
“Good, let’s move on then.”

I missed out on lore but it feels like true roleplaying and it feels glorious.

Another small example from a conversation closer.

- Why are you helping me?
- Thank you.
(I said Thank You because I was just grateful for the help and didn’t want to burden the other with probing questions. There was simply no reason to and there really was nothing more to say.)

When a narrative title can transport me in this way where I’m not interested in Playing The Game Optimally to get all the “extra nuggets”, where I only want to play my character authentically, it’s doing something truly special.

Hot damn.

Nabbed Jupiter during the Steam Rogue sale and it's proving to an excellent hybrid of Doom action in the form of a traditional TBS roguelike.

Noticed hyper-budget Nightmare getting some grassroots attention and only 10 or so min. of watching my fave Twitch streamer play revealed this heavily inspired Resident Evil retro FPS is something I need in my life.

you will be able to set a different display name, but the username will be visible next to it (just like on twitter)

It's Twitter but open source with less shitty people. It's trending for obvious reasons these days because it's Musk-free, but lashman was an advocate for far longer than that.

And who wouldn't prefer cute elephants and making toots to shitty blue birbs and tweeting ? No one.

nah, unfortunately not, only admins can :( but each instance has its own set of custom emotes
Yeah, good enough. I suppose you need a server to create your own instance ?

Bummer. Bookwyrm main instance to new users isn't open right now and you apparently need a server to set your own instance up.

correct, yes

but also (for Bookwyrm) you should be able to talk to people in other instances as well, they're not completely separate

things i will never have

update:

photogrammetry is not worth it
update 2: electric bugaloo

it's all fine, it just does that sometimes now, something else has come to my attention

all day, i was doing calculations on my laptop for a permutation thing, basically find answer to a logic puzzle with my pc for an assignment, and i started to wonder if i did something wrong, as the program was using forever to get the calculations

it turns out, it would've taken aproximately 5 years to calculate all possible permutations, so therefore maximum 5 years to find the correct answer

If S-E were offloading their losses onto their Western studios as some sort of creative accounting scheme, why did they just sell most of their Western branches? The last thing you want to do is run the risk of your books being closely scrutinised if you're evading taxes.

I'm sure they are doing something dodgy with their taxes (what company isn't?) but I think they just don't have a clue how to manage their Western studios.
the only thing I've seen that makes sense out of what they did is they have been angling for a sale, and offloading all the "losing" studios was a way to make the sale look better. I don't know who the fuck would want to buy SE, but at this point even a venture capital firm would probably know what to do with their IPs better than current SE management.

They could be streamlining for a sale. Or they could be offloading studios that made unprofitable games because they couldn't adequately manage them. It could even be both.

Square-Enix has never been afraid of offloading their Western studios if they were losing money. Just look at IOI. And look at how IOI turned things around once they were in control of their own destiny. I do think it's good of S-E to be agreeable in terms of selling off their IP and studios like this, as there are a lot of big publishers who would - out of sheer spite it seems - grind the IP and the studios into dust before they'd even countenance selling them. Probably as some sort of face-saving exercise should the liberated studio and IP thrive away from the mothership and make them look incompetent.

At the same time, depending on who any potential S-E buyer is, the Western IP may not be attractive to them. There could be overlap between IP the buyer already owns (as such, they don't want to pay for it) or the buyer felt the studios that come with said IP don't really fit into their structure (i.e. they may have a studio nearby that could lead to overlap, causing costly redundancies and bad PR, or they can't adequately support the studios for reasons xyz which could lead to costly redundancies and bad PR).

Another consideration is the S-E Western studios could be bogged down by third party deals such as the Marvel deals that Square-Enix signed, or the Perfect Dark co-development deal with Microsoft Studios that Crystal Dynamics currently has. These deals may not fit into the roadmap of the buyer, and supporting them may prove too much of a distraction, be a direct conflict of interest, or prove overly beneficial to their competitors.

Again, it all depends on who, if anyone, is looking to buy Square-Enix. The rumours say Sony, and if so then most of the above applies. They obviously don't want one of their studios developing first party Xbox games, and Tomb Raider is a waste for Sony when they're going large on Uncharted. And while they're not averse to making Marvel games, Sony is definitely more keen on developing their own IP than licensing other people's IP (Spider-Man is in a unique position, when you look at the film rights), so I don't think having GOTG or Avengers really interests them.

About the only major property from the Embracer deal thusfar which we know Sony might like is Deus Ex, because they really don't have anything quite like it, but even that's a mismanaged series currently on terminal decline thanks to S-E's negligence. Maybe Sony doesn't see value or potential in releasing a new game in the series and indicated to S-E that it should be offloaded before they sign on the dotted line.

Embracer, on the other hand, seem to want to pick up any shit that's going. They're pretty much a dumping ground for anyone who has a studio or IP to sell at this point. I don't know how they're paying to keep all these studios afloat and it looks to me like a bit of a house of cards, but whatever they're doing is still working well for them since they haven't gone under yet.
