To play at 1080p@144Hz , which GPU would be best upgrading from a RTX 2060? RTX 3070?
Unless you really care about ray tracing and Nvidia specific features like DLSS and NVENC then I would consider an AMD card. You can get a 6800XT for close to $500 on sale (or lower depending on models compared) price point and it will have significantly better rasterization performance.

Edit: I should also add that this is a good chart for comparing GPU relative performance at different resolutions. It's not perfect but still helpful: https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gpu-hierarchy,4388.html

Well, i've been dithering for months and due to dwindling stock today i finally decided... i bought a Ryzen 5800X3D for my AM4 system and it's being delivered tomorrow. Should be a decent upgrade from my 2700X and will be more than enough for my needs while i save for an AM5 upgrade sometime... well that time has been delayed a while i reckon.

I'll keep my RTX 2070 and wait and see what AMD have to offer and what Nvidia counter with etc but with me looking into a new NAS and possibly needing a new monitor before Christmas as my current one is poorly it may be a while before i upgrade my GPU.

Excited to see what the new CPU does for me though, wish me luck on the installation sometime tomorrow.

Looks like the 5600X is the sweet spot for an upgrade though from the looks of this few day old GN video.

Hopefully some of you have an answer. Basically i'm in a mood because i lost a 4TB SSD, it took out my Steam & GOG libraries, ( eh no biggy i lost some screenshots but meh ), i also lost all my modded Bethesda games, again no big problem as i can rebuild them from Wabbajack or Vortex.

However, i had redirected some profile folders so i lost a ton of streams that were unarchived by the streamer and had a tiny audience so they are gone forever probably, screenshots of fun things in those streams, a ton of notes and documents and my latest Firefox bookmarks. Nothing major but there's enough random or obscure stuff gone that i'm grumpy about it. Especially as i was literally going to backup the data the next day.

Anyway, i'm looking to get a 4bay NAS to replace my old 2bay and i'm leaning towards a Synology 920+ but the question i have is do i go for HDD or SSD?
For the same price i can get roughly 4x the capacity in HDD as i can in SSD but having lost both HDDs and an SSD recently i'm asking Meta what they think.
Anything important is recorded in emails etc so that's fine and not a worry. Also the NAS will not be on 24x7 but probably once a week to copy across fresh data, perform system updates etc. My housemate lost his NAS when 2 of his drives died in quick succession so he's set on SSDs for the next one but damn, they're still stupid fucking expensive for home use.

It's a lot of cash but i've had my once-a-decade reminder not to be too complacent about my data.

Any tips, advice, links are welcome but i am leaning towards 4x4TB WD Red Pro HDDs in SHR/RAID5 giving me 12TB usable space.
I would recommend an online cloud backup service over just local backups.

What I do is remote cloud backup + local single HDD backup, which is always offline. The only way I could be more safe is to have an offsite HDD in a safe deposit box or something.

What cloud service do you use? I was thinking about doing this but haven't found a price I am willing to pay yet. I could use Google Cloud coldline storage to get to a somewhat reasonable price but would rather find something more user friendly.

I use Backblaze. It's super slow, but it's quite cheap.

Ok my proposed new build as it stands just now (plus an RTX 2070 Super from my current build and I'll install W10 myself)
Anything worth changing? I don't mind paying a bit extra for a pre build but naturally I want something that will last, so if anything is worth upgrading or vice versa is overkill please let me know.

That being said the one big question mark for me is still the case, I know bugger all about pc cases.
I just want something that will fit everything, isn't so big it's an eyesore (not sure about the whole full vs mid debate) and has good thermals out the box. I'm hesitant to spend more than £~130 on a case but advice would be appreciated.
Fwiw, my current case is a Fractal Design Define R4 which I believe is a mid.

EDIT: oh god I shouldn't have started reading, is intel better than AMD these days? I thought it was other way around now, I've no idea what I;m buying now >_<

Intel is the value leader right now because you don't have to go all in on DDR5 and mobo like the new AM5 stuff. Since you are picking AM4 stuff though it is a moot point as that only applies to the latest generations for AMD and Intel. I have been doing a lot of case research lately for a new one at the 4000D you have selected there gets a lot of recommendations.

Is it a bad idea to go for AM4 then at this time?

EDIT: some googling seems to suggest AM4 still pretty good to go for
OK, is looking like my build from the previous link I sent is still looking pretty good then I'm guessing

Did exactly that two weeks ago, also replaced 2080Ti with 3080Ti (managed to get it for 600 bucks).
It is a good upgrade, finally Cyberpunk runs with RT and crowds at high mostly stable 60. Ready for the expansion.
Tomorrow I will start Plague Tale 2, hopefully it will keep 60 there as well.

I did some CPU testing in Cyberpunk (RT enabled, but low res to eliminate GPU bottleneck) and 5800X3D is pretty much twice as fast as 2700X. Same board, same memory, same core count. Not bad.

AM4 is still solid. I just did a drop-in upgrade on my AM4 setup to a 5800x3D and a 6900XT which will last me at least another 2-3 years for work and 1440p gaming. By then, 4k will probably be more reasonable for monitors and hardware to push it so I will fully upgrade then. The beauty of PCs compared to consoles is there is no hard generation line where old software stops working so getting high end previous gen products still works great and can save you a good amount of money.

The MSI B450 TOMAHAWK ATX AM4 Motherboard supports the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D 3.4 GHz 8-Core Processor with BIOS version 7C02v1I. If the motherboard is using an older BIOS version, upgrading the BIOS will be necessary to support the CPU.

Note: A USB 3.2 Gen 1 to USB 3.2 Gen 2 header adapter is required.

Disclaimer: Some physical dimension constraints are currently not checked, such as CPU coolers and RAM clearance.
I suppose I'm good with A and D, but can I go without those adapters (and gets slower speed) or are they necessary ?

I would definitely check that the CPU Cooler is short enough to fit the case and the clearance around the CPU socket is enough for the heatpipes. I have bought a new case which did not fit my CPU Cooler so it's something i have engrained in my mind to check.

The simple way to check is to see if there are any other systems on PC Parts Picker that have those components. You should be fine but i'm paranoid about checking as i was only a couple of mm too tall.

If you already have an existing Ryzen processor that's old enough then you can put that in to do a BIOS update but i'd think any new motherboard would have a new enough BIOS to deal with the 5x series.

Dunno about B & C, i need more coffee.

I actively decided against the Torrent since IMHO something that expensive shouldn't have that many cheap-looking plastic parts.
It's not really a functional objection, I'm sure they work well enough, but at that price I demand aesthetic satisfaction :p

I just want the best temps, I'm traumatized by my non mesh NZXT.
Ok, I also want it not too loud.
...
And come to think of it if manufacturers could avoid putting their fucking brand logo on a tacky plate in front, it would be appreciated.

I'm never going to find a case.

edit
In fact it would be helpful if I could put things in context and torture my own case to see what kind of temps I would get. Not sure how to do it.
It would probably take fire, though.

Well I ran some 3DMark tests, Time Spy and CPU Profile, and... overall I'm cool with the results. Perfectly average results for my 2600x and a little below for the 2060 Super /2600x. At least there don't seem to be anything wrong with my setup.

Temps on the other hand, well I expected worse. Average of 72 in Time Spy with a spike at 78+.
I don't know in what way it's bad or horrible, I suppose it's hot.

I don’t disagree with you and I prefer black metal boxes but I wasn’t able to find anything that had good airflow too. I hate glass side panels which really limits my options since solid side panels on a lot of the popular cases seem non existent these days.

I'm very similar in my case preferences. I ended up going with a white, no-window Silent Base 802.
Also quite expensive (it was ~150€ when I bought it), but it has extremely high build quality, is very functional, and has good airflow.

Good to know they are have great build quality, that was one of the other cases I had it narrowed down to; I'll have to take a closer look at their offerings next build. I like the white too and would have got my Torrent in white except they only offer white with the stupid window panel. It's a bit sad how hard it is to find good cases now if you don't want RGB crap or no glass. Ideally, I would love to have a machined aluminum case with minimal plastic, but finding those in a mid tower size is damn near impossible.

The 5800X3D is really quite moderate in its power usage compared to recent high-performance CPUs, so it's not that critical. Any decent air cooler should do the job.

I just had a look and apparently the Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 is the current price/perf king, so if that fits your case/mb that might be a good choice. (I've not personally used it)

I have the same case as Durante, yay me!
Although I have black variant. I use the mesh top and front with internal fans set to "2" and I am very satisfied with the noise and temperatures.

Which CPU Fan should I go for if I buy a 5800X3D ?
In adition to the case above I got Deepcool AK620 for the 3D.
I had to set fans to 600rpm in windows to be happy with the quiet. Windows temperature is around 35-45 depending on what I do.
Then in games it ramps up, but playing Cyberpunk with RT and disabled vsync, CPU temp stays at around 75, which is fine I think.

Is Zotac a good brand ? I just saw that I can get a 3070 ti for 500 something. There is a catch, isn't it ? There is always a catch. For one this is a third party seller, that doesn't fill me with confidence.

Edit
Not so sure anymore about the 5800X3D. It's fucking pricey when you can get a 5600x for 200. And 5800x for not much more. Sure, in some game it's performing better, but it's in the 420 euros zone.

Li Kao Looking around, and the video i posted the other day by Gamer's Nexus seems to be holding true. If you can find a 5600X or 5800X at a decent price then they are great CPUs and sometimes better than the 5800X3D, so i wouldn't worry about going for one of those instead if it suits your budget.

Also, i was just sent this but i reckon it would hold true for the 5600X/5800X too.

I swear the Internet is driving me mad. It's a fucking pain just finding an exhaustive benchmark. Always an omission or some strange test choice, because reasons.

So about the 5800x vs 5800x3d EdwardTivrusky I just saw this big bench :

And correct me if I'm wrong but there is not one game that win with a 5800x.
That being said, and to nicely loop back to my first point, the benchmarker chose to not use the exact same parts in their comparison. Because reason. Logic. And Science. I'm just spitballing here, I stopped trying to understand benchmark decisions yesterday.

I quote : 'The goal of this review is NOT to test "5800X vs 5800X3D at similar config," but "The current GPU Test System that I have right now, a decent but slightly aged config, vs 5800X3D the way you would build it today" to find out how much of a difference an upgrade can bring.'
My reaction : 'Are you mad ?'

As someone with a 5800x, it might not win in benchmarks tests against the X3D, albiet as you saw - benchmarks aren't all great to begin with,, but it's not like it's some slouch of a CPU either. You'd be getting a great gaming pc with either way depending on your budget.

Li Kao I totally see what you mean about that article. However the difference between a 5800X and 5800X3D is at least £120 over here so is it worth it?

In the conclusion they say...
On average, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D pushed out 266 frames per second, while the Ryzen 7 5800X achieved "only" 230 FPS. Both numbers are highly impressive, and I'm not sure if the difference is significant enough for a conclusion that applies to all gamers.
The difference between a 5800X and the previous generations is pretty big already so it's not like you will be buying a totally pointless upgrade and if a budget is tight that £120 could be used elsewhere.

Just to make it all difficult for us...

Is it just me or does it all just degenerate into number-letter stew in your brain after a while? lol

AHA-Lambda That looks fine but if you're waiting until the new year i'd just save the cash and see how things have developed when the new tech has been out for a while. In other words be prepared to double check things when ready to upgrade.... unless some mad deals pop up as you're saving which may happen.

e.g. You can get a Ryzen 5900X at the moment for the price i paid for the 5800X3D a week ago. Mad.

Also, as he says in the video i posted above CES 2023 may well see some new models & price changes etc to shift some stock and generate hype. That's Jan 5-8 2023 so it may be double worth waiting before you spend. Maybe.

Today's dilemma : 5800x / Pure Rock 2 combo pretty much locked in as I can't go AM5 right now. Do I push it and put that in my hot case ? :coffee-blob:
Yeah, still not sold on the case... :blobclosecry:

Well, to be fair it's more of an availability thing as the Pure Base is not on Amazon right now (and was third party anyway), the Lancool 216 is still not out, and the Lancool III costs a kidney.

After all I always say my case is hot but my recent 3dMark bench was honorable with 66c peak. But then again the 5800x is hot IIRC. But I would put a solid CPU Fan in there. But I would still use my non mesh NZXT.

But both of them are specified as 2x 2.5" bays. That's smöl :blobclosecry:
For focus 2 you can mount 6 actually. while 4 of them needs 2 accessory brackets which sucks, it's nothing a double tape couldn't fix really. You even have ample room in front of the psu to add more with the double tape :D

But yeah, for sata storage wise, the pure base is better.

Now 5800x or 5800x3D. I'm ordering hardware... in the next few years at this rhythm.

For the Fractal Design Focus 2 I would advise to add an additional fan at the back of the case.
Only fans at the front leaves some cooling performance lying on the floor.

My monitors are slowly dying and wondering if I should go for a single 1440p gsync (I dunno the hz..120/144?) monitor instead, thing is my PC is a bit old - I7 3770k and a GTX 1070 (gsync is display port only right?)

If so what monitor should I look at?

Hi everyone!

I’m upgrading to AM5, and I’d like to retire my old NZXT Phantom case for something with more air flow.
I’m really liking the look of Fractal’s Meshify Compact C.

I’m mainly wondering people’s thoughts on Dark Tempered Glass versus a Clear Tempered Glass?

I think the dark is growing on me, but the clear would be a much better view into my case. I’m undecided.

I have a dark tempered Meshify C. It's a great case and I actually prefer the dark tint because I don't like bright flashing RGB lights. My case is on my left side though, and it faces a wall, so it doesn't really matter that much to me. It's a high quality product.

That said, I am going to replace the case in my upcoming build. I had to remove one of the front fans to get my 3080 to fit inside it, and there is no chance a 40xx card can fit in it. I know there are a variety of reasons people prefer smaller cases but I'm going back to using a bigger case because it'll fit newer components, will have better airflow and make cabling easier to some small extent. I ended up putting in an order for a Meshify 2 after confirming that it can fit the newer, bigger GPUs coming out these days.

Wouldn't it be better to grab one of the newer Meshify cases? That is, from the Meshify 2 line of cases. Unless there's a significant price difference between the newer cases where you are, I would consider them for ease of access alone.

The price difference was pretty big on Amazon, which I’m using via Microsoft Rewards. Reviews and thermals looked good.
After Spin Doctor’s reply, I put in for a cancellation since my item wasn’t due to ship until 11/30-12/5.

I was also eyeballing the Hyte Y60. I may go for that, which seems to be getting positive reviews.

You didn't get a reply if I'm not mistaken, so here is my very uninformed take. It depends on the games you play and the setting level you go for, but, generally speaking, I would beware of adding a monitor like that to an aging config.
Even if you don't aim for 120 fps, that's still a jump going from 1080 to 1440p.

But again, depends on the games, the settings, and even if you are okay with playing at 1080p on a 1440p monitor.

I would be going to one if I got one. I know some games I would have to run at 1080, that would net me the same performance as before right?

There is currently one game that barely hits 60 and it's not a new game, if like from 2012 or something. New games tend to have to cap at 60.

I could technically make the ultra wide act like two 1080 monitors right?
