I am baffled how Switch emulation is already a thing on Android that is crazy
Plan to get a new Android phone with upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 later this year
If i can play some Switch games there my Switch gonna be collecting dust

Ideally want a Nvidia Shield 2 with a new chipset that'd be the best new low power device to run emulators

Is it really emulation in a traditional sense or more like a translation-layer since it's both ARM? 🤔

Decided to see how Xenosaga 3 runs on PCSX2.

Seems to be mostly fine



But there are glitches in various areas that seem to be caused by shadows:



It's playable though.

Don't worry, I'm not one of those heathens that play with a stretched image ;)
I was messing around with the settings to see if I could get rid of that glitch and ended up taking those pics with the game in 16:9.
Doesn't look like there's a fix for this though.

Hmm would it be possible to map these to touch-screen swipes?

That sounds like a plan! I would try to see if PrimeHack runs on the Deck, then you could map the gyro to assist with aiming :D

yeah emudeck actually comes with primehack so it's just downloading a community controller config on steam, it's a good time

A recent Flycast (RA core) update added a "Full framebuffer emulation" setting, using it limits you to native resolution and it may be more demanding but it enables things like 18 Wheeler's lens flares and makes effects like Code: Veronica's water/heat distortion stutter-free without turning the RTT buffer off. It's the same for Antonio's starting battle roar in Skies of Arcadia (it doesn't fix everything or is unrelated to effects like the dof or blur in Fina's dream before she wakes up on the pirate ship, it looks wrong but is momentary, though the game may have other such effects later). Many, if not most, games work correctly without this of course so you may still enable high resolutions, C:V even seemed fine with RTT off but Skies did have issues so there may be other games like it and 18 Wheeler that require this new setting. Still waiting for a Sega Rally 2 fix, though forcing texture filtering works as a work around for it not functioning by default, it still looks wrong in stages like Muddy where you see the big square textures tree leaves are painted on. These exceptions and bad performance in Armada and Under Defeat are about all the issues I've had in this emu (so I have no need for Redream which has its own issues, not to mention lacks support for Windows CE games, Atomiswave, Naomi or Naomi 2) with minor issues in a couple games' attract modes like crashes or stupid behaviour in Le Mans and Faster than Speed and some Aero Dancing iirc (gameplay has no issues). Retroarch is also gearing up for the 1.15.0 stable version release soon with some big updates.

Been spending the weekend tinkering with emulators on my Steam Deck, PC and Retroid Pocket 3.

So far, so good. I’ve got all the 2D Nintendo consoles going, complete with save syncing between the PC and the Retroid Pocket 3. Likewise for Mega Drive and Mega CD games and their saves syncing between PC and Steam Deck.

Before going to bed I managed to get PS1 setup on my PC and got the memory card folder for Duckstation syncing (via Syncthing) between my PC and my Deck. This evening I will the PS1 stuff sorted on my Deck too.

Another cool thing about my syncing folders is my home media server is also part of the Syncthing share, so even if one of my devices is sleeping or switched off, the latest version of the save will be updated on the server and propagate to those devices as soon as they wake.

Syncthing was actually quite tricky to get working on Deck, as a lot of the EmuDeck emulators use Flatpaks, which Syncthing can’t access the files for by default until you give it permission using Flatseal.

But I got there in the end and I’m pleased with how it turned out. My aim is to have a completely seamless cross-device setup where I need minimal use of a keyboard and mouse (due to me being on a HTPC and Steam Deck).

About the only thing I need a keyboard for at this point is changing discs in Duckstation, which is a minor thing all things considered.

Once I’m done up to PS1 I’ll move on to PSP, PS2, Dreamcast, Xbox, N64 and GameCube to round off the less complicated ones.

From there I need to work out solutions for the unique form factors or inputs of systems going forward.

Not that it’s horribly hard, but yeah, it’s not easy, and god those battles are long.

Does RPCS3 not run well on AMD cards? I finally upgraded from my 970 and either the shaders dont compile and fail or they do and look like im playing Scanner Somber with weird red/black outlines for everything.
Or is there a specific setup I should be implementing for my card?

Resigned to the fact that there's never going to be a cheap, good lightgun since Sinden is so costly (seriously, how was a Wii remote only 39.99 in 2006 but now because they've added a handgun grip, shifted the controls around and maybe made the camera better - though the remote's had good specs like super high 200+ Hz - it has to cost like 3x or 4x with rumble?), or much effort for VR lightgun games outside EmuVR (and rare games like Pistol Whip or Dead Second), so I dug out my Wii remotes and Dolphinbar and set it up with Dolphin to at least enjoy the shooters that don't rely on accuracy and have on-screen crosshair even in the arcades. I'm getting a Wii Zapper soon so that should make them a bit more fun too. Stuff like L.A. Machineguns and such, but I'll probably also play the games meant to be real lightgun games like Ghost Squad and The House of the Dead 2 & 3 in the same way in this and other emulators if I can get Wiimotes working, with crosshair on and the zapper for SMG hip firing instead of my old pistol-like Sega Handcannon shell or trying to actually aim since the Wii remotes aren't nearly accurate enough for that (outside using your missed or on target shot effects as a crosshair guide). I guess I'll also replay some more Wii games like SMGalaxy, MPTrilogy and the Prince of Persia game. I've been using Dolphin anyway but only for GameCube and Classic Controller Wii games using my DS4.

Since I did that I also bothered to finally check out TeknoParrot for once but I have to say it leaves a lot to be desired compared to other emulators still. The interface is very mame-like (but far simpler to be honest, I didn't have major issues) and each game has to be manually added and configured and stuff, plus there's no easy access to simple options like alternating between windowed and fullscreen or even maximizing the window (for some games you can kinda do that for others it borks the rendering, some have a "fullscreen windowed" option that doesn't actually work since it changes your resolution to the game's, etc.). I only added 3 games so far, all lightgun games. Operation G.H.O.S.T. (one of the Ghost Squad sequels), House of the Dead 4 and SEGA Golden Gun. I'll probably delete the last, it doesn't seem very high quality, just your average arcade novelty. They work alright all things considered but yeah, it'll hopefully get better. It does natively support the Dolphinbar and Wii remotes so you don't need external software crap with it though. I was always too scared to check out TeknoParrot, because I associate it more with the darker side of programs you can run locally (whereas something like Dolphin is basically The Today Show, normie McDonalds, everyone approves except assholes level of thing...)

I've had H2Overdrive sitting on my PC for years unplayed...

My emulation HDD is almost full, I even deleted all my PS2 stuff since I rarely fired it up compared to RetroArch with stuff I actually have nostalgia or interest for. Now I want to keep 22 Wii games (Idk, my ocd decided I will have either 11 or 22 or 44 etc. games for all the systems I decided to keep atm) but it has so many hidden gems I just can't decide which to trim, every time I want something else (alongside a few obvious like SMG and MPTrilogy and the rail shooters I wanted to get back to with the Wiimote). From Wario Land - Shake It or Sky Crawlers to Endless Ocean (or Blue World) or Prince of Persia - The Forgotten Sands to Sin & Punishment 2 or Battalion Wars 2 to Trauma Team or MadWorld or Klonoa or Excite Truck (or Excite Bots) or Punch Out!! and I'm not even including stuff that got PC ports like NMH 1 & 2 even though if I was to replay them I'd prefer to do on Wii for dat waggle. Such a great but underappreciated by gamerz system. I've been replaying Red Steel 2 a lot and it's still a beautiful (even if Wii was underpowered in 2006) and fun game (even if VR does motion controls way better now).

By the way, I've not used a download manager since the 00s but I came across Free Download Manager and I must day it works very well in speeding up the otherwise super throttled downloads from archive.org, that makes filez for platforms that require more than a few MB viable from there if you know what I mean.

Hm, I thought I'd try some Wii Fit Plus after all these years but it seems the Dolphinbar I got those years ago only ever supported controllers, not any other accessories. Sucks. Apparently the best method now for Dolphin is to use a regular decent bluetooth adaptor to connect your Wii stuff and use the new BT passthrough option in Dolphin, which you can't with the Dolphinbar. Then you just need to have any kind of sensor bar just for the IR lights, not any connectivity stuff, but the page supposed to tell you which BT adapters are known working with that, since they say it's a bit picky feature, is blank. That's weird.

At least this stuff is cheap still from a quick look, regular IR light USB sensor bars go for like ~10 and BT adapters around that, or even half that, you just gotta figure out which is a working one. Supposedly you also see a tangible improvement in standard Wii remote stuff vs the Dolphinbar with BT passthrough even though to me so far stuff seem to be as they were on Wii really, not that I tried it recently natively but yeah, it's all good, no issues here. I only get real issues if the game's not running fullspeed for any reason which makes sense, otherwise the controls work as intended as far as I can tell. For example the cursor is laggy only in the games it already was laggy in, like Twilight Princess which somehow fucked that up (and I'd be emulating the GC version instead if it wasn't for the fishing mini game feeling great with the remote, back then because of it I badly wanted a Link's Fishing Adventure like there was Link's Crossbow Training).

Still, it seems like it was a big addition when they added that option to Dolphin, I'd think there's more info about it online but searching for what BT dongle is good for that yields next to nothing, maybe some random's reddit post from years ago. I suppose most people don't care to use real Wii controls and just play the Classic Controller type games using any generic dual analog gamepad instead, or mouse and keyboard hacks or whatever. Which makes some sense as original Wii controllers are so hard to find now and when you do they go for luricrous prices, which is insane given there must be 200+ millions out there. But surely at least existing owners that have since gotten into emulation instead would also be numerous enough for this to be more prominent/discussed more.

Well, I'm good for now, just something to consider in the near future as I do want to try Wii Fit Plus again (hopefully my balance board works, at least it turns on).

Another thing that's also weirdly hard to figure out (user reviews going from 0 to 5 stars) is if any of the knock off Wii Remote Plus brands, since official ones cannot be found for a decent price, are actually working as intended, especially when it comes to controls outside the pointer, like actual Motion Plus games.

That also means mainstream emulation support on IOS devices finally, instead of having to do that cumbersome Altstore thing anymore

I just don't bother with my own switch anymore. It's a Pokemon machine so I can trade with my niece, everything else goes to Yuzu / Ryujin X. The last straw for me was Metroid Prime. And it ran decent on my switch. It's just so much better emulated.

I have the Zapper now and lightgun type stuff are definitely more fun with it than just with the Wii remote even if it's still far from a real lightgun. I already had a Sega Handcannon like I said but with the method's aiming deficiences I prefer to just "hip fire" with the Zapper and the crosshair on rather than pretend trying to aim properly (which is doable in the games with aiming calibration but not all Wii shooters have that and as soon as you move at all - even just as you sway your arms left and right to aim at different corners of the screen - it's no longer 1:1 so you compensate with the hit effects as temporary crosshair so might as well just go all in rather than pretend aim). The Handcannon also doesn't allow easy access to other controls so was only meant for games with basic shooting controls only, other rail shooters have additional controls which are more intuitive and in the lightgun spirit in the Zapper form factor instead of trying to push buttons on top of the remote with the Handcannon or holding the remote by itself without a shell or using the nunchuck off hand out of the shell.

I also discovered after all this time (since it wasn't really necessary, most great Wii and GC games performed great on their own) that there are 60fps codes for Dolphin and I just tried one with Darkside Chronicles and it works and definitely makes that game play way better (it was already decent fun vanilla though, mostly for the RE content novelty rather than as anything to really rival Sega's or Namco's shooters, it's not as tightly designed). Not all games are possible to mod like this but when it works to fix such a problematic title it's amazing. The House of the Dead: Overkill has such a code so I'm getting that again, I had avoided getting it at all for emulation since playing it on a real Wii the frame drops ruined the fun (as it doesn't hold a candle to arcade HOTD anyway).

Edit: Overkill's 60fps patch doesn't fully fix it, there are still stutters and problems and what not so it's far from the most polished game but oh well, more to play.

Ghost Squad has a code also but it's apparently got issues in some parts, though its creator was cool enough to make it so you can on the fly toggle it with in game controls, though I don't think I'll bother doing that myself and just play the game as it is. By the way, it's one of the very best lightgun games ever made, every genre fan should play it. It's also playable with TeknoParrot if you're so inclined but only for patreon subscribers at the moment so I dunno if it's any better there, though I do know it doesn't have all the unlock progression stuff you get on Wii as you play, but if you play the Evolution arcade version then everything is unlocked and selectable by default since it was the last version doing away with the arcade save system they had using cards or whatever. I'll be playing the Wii version for that progression stuff anyway and by the time I get bored or get 100% it may be available outside the patreon only TeknoParrot library to move there.

I also discovered this Wii lightgun shooter I had never heard of, Gunslingers. It looks worth a look after exhausting all the big names, I don't know if it falls flat after a while but it looks more well made than the average shovelware title for sure, at a glance, in terms of pacing, enemy patterns, polish and what not.

Now my next step is to figure out how to use the Wii controllers in emulators other than Dolphin and TeknoParrot, hopefully without the need for external software but if that's what I gotta go back to (I recall experimenting with Touchmore or something previously) then I will. I need to play the Dreamcast and Naomi lightgun games at the very least (Confidential Mission, Ninja Assault, Maze of Kings, etc.) so hopefully they can somehow work with RetroArch.

By the way, Rodea the Sky Soldier is a legit game and deserves to be part of Naka's pre-downfall legacy. Not AMAZING or without issues but it's legit good. A sequel could be amazing for sure (or if they had spent the years developing the WiiU & 3DS versions in improving this, maybe adding nunchuck for additional controls, camera controls, improved camera and I dunno, maybe remake the whole thing for WiiU rather than make a wholly different game.

Also for those who do have a Sinden lightgun or similar, some people have apparently made hacks for the Wii lightgun/rail shooter games to have perfect 1:1 aiming, the required borders and no crosshair (I'd guess that's optional, some are meant to have em even on arcade as I mentioned), that's pretty amazing.

So I'm trying to set this up in RetroArch and I've managed to get some things working but not all so I need some help.

Basically from what I've gathered you have to set your lightgun controls to be your mouse, which the Wii remote acts as in Dolphinbar's Mode 1 or 2 (4 is for use in Dolphin as emulated real Wii remote, 3 I think is as gamepad inputs and 1 is standard and 2 is raw input or whatever and the one I'm supposed to use here and in TeknoParrot where it works), then enable settings like some universal crosshair per core for games that don't have crosshair by default when using a lightgun (since you're supposed to aim but with a mouse you need crosshair otherwise you don't know where you're shooting until the shot effects show).

It works well for some cores like FinalBurnNeo and old 2D lightgun games like Dragon Gun which have a crosshair anyway (and really you're just dragging some crosshair around even if the original arcade game had lightgun controllers as they were probably just fixed mounted joysticks that look like guns similar to L.A. Machineguns etc.), the shooting lines up perfectly. It also works for the Flycast core and Dreamcast port of Confidential Mission which has a gun calibration screen that works well after calibrating so the RetroArch crosshair line up exactly with where the shots land. I assume it's similar for The House of the Dead 2 and other actual Dreamcast ports but I play the Wii port of that instead with Dolphin so I didn't try that.

Here is the issue. In other games like the also Flycast core's Naomi arcade games like Maze of Kings, even though it does a calibration on boot (but sadly it's just center point calibration for the original cabinet hardware, not different points of the screen to triangulate or whatever from as in Dreamcast ports) the mouse cursor/crosshair of RetroArch only line up when close to the center of the screen and the further to the sides/corners you aim the further from the mouse cursor the shots land. Idk what settings I'm supposed to change for that to work properly. Ninja Assault is worse, almost random, as it has no calibration.

That's my main problem but I also have some trouble with it being apparently impossible to set controls like insert coin for such arcade games since only the lightgun controls work when you set the lightgun as controller type and there (not in the core but general RA input settings only) you can only map things like auxiliary gun buttons, triggers, gun d-pads for those that have such etc., not additional cabinet controls like that. I kinda work around it for FBN arcade games by also having a second controller in the core (as default anyway not just for lightgun games) and where I set insert coin for the 2nd player (which is the same function anyway I guess) still works. I think I can do that in Flycast arcade games also but I didn't test it. Anyway, this is minor in comparison.

I assume this is the same stuff you need to fix you're using PC lightguns that work similarly to a Wii remote like AimTrak or even the Sinden lightgun (but maybe Sinden gun's software takes care of that stuff with its pinpoint accuracy AimTrak and Wii don't offer, Idk, still I'm pretty sure it's meant to take over mouse controls though). So if you've figured it out for any of that then maybe let me know what you did since it's probably the same process I need to do.

By the way, I've not used a download manager since the 00s but I came across Free Download Manager and I must day it works very well in speeding up the otherwise super throttled downloads from archive.org, that makes filez for platforms that require more than a few MB viable from there if you know what I mean.

I own the new Zelda, but last night I decided to fire it up on PC... it's just so easy to make it look sooooo much better on PC. I think I'll stick to Switch since I already have a bunch of hours on there...

So it looks like my switch is early enough for me to install CFW on it. May be time to do it and rip some of my games to PC.

My dream has come true. I can finally play Picross in 1400p.

Oh and maybe BotW…

You joke but I genuinely would like a confirmation that playing every picross in emulation lets you unlock the bonus puzzles of each iteration like on a switch.

Is the Wii U version better to emulate?
Yes, but I did my last playthrough in Yuzu and now I'm hoping that when I get further along in TotK it's going to detect my BotW horses like it does on the Switch.
