Surprised those two Trails games sold above expectations. I thought they were doomed to either stay fantranslated or flop horribly. I really should replay Zero, I got pretty far into the fan translation when it came out, I regret not beating it now. It's a bit of a slow burn, even more so than the other games.

I think it's actually a lot better in that regard than FC, which is the slowest game in the series. Zero ramps up a lot quicker, and has you at least on the level of proper police action by the time of chapter 1, and doing some pretty major police stuff by Chapter 2.

What slows Zero down so much is if you want to talk to all NPCs all the time, since Crossbell has like 60 of them, and the game updates them like 3 times every chapter, which is crazy when you consider the amount of text that amounts to. Now, I personally loved reading all those NPCs, that's my jam, but I can understand how it's offputting if you aren't into that. ON THE OTHER HAND, I also don't understand why you'd force yourself to do so if you don't find it enjoyable. I guess that's one of the reasons I find completionism so weird. Just do the things you like and ignore everything else. The game doesn't expect you to follow every little character.

I guess I just have to be juggling between Midnight Suns (Steam) and TotK for a while. Both are really good and I don't wanna stop playing any of them for the other.

Was anybody else able to play Far Cry 6? Useless Ubisoft Connect says it can't connect to the server effectively locking me out of the single player game I just bought :)
I was.

Works fine on my Linux. Didn't have to deal with connect at all, actually, which is nice. It just shows up briefly when launching the game and buggers right off.

but we have Tears of the Kingdom at home

FWIW, played through a decent chunk of this earlier this year. it's pretty fun for what it is (BOTW filtered through the Ubisoft open-world formula), but like most big open-world games, it's probably just too long for me to finish; I completed the main story objectives in the first of the 4-5 main areas, started on my second area, and then took a break to finish other games after 25-30 hours or so of playtime, and haven't come back to it after several months. I still have it installed and might give it another shot eventually, though

Asus ROG Ally review: A solid but imperfect Steam Deck challenger
Not the Steam Deck killer we expected

The Asus ROG Ally is a Windows 11-based gaming handheld boasting powerful specs and a sleek design. While it’s a solid device on its own, it’s not quite on par with the Steam Deck.

Pros
  • Fetching design
  • Bright, colorful display
  • Ergonomic controls
  • Compatible with multiple launchers

Cons
  • Poor battery life
  • Lack of dedicated UI
  • Good but not great performance

Now that Like a Dragon is in the bag it's time to finally tackle Shadowrun Honk Kong.

Falcom has trained me into being an NPC dialogue completionist.
It's mostly pretty great, but I also can't deny that I often feel relieved when story locks me into a specific section and I don't have to do the 1 hour long (at least that's what it feels like) routine tour through all of Crossbell.

It looks like a RTWP (Real time with pause) kind of, bullet hell kind of just every time you stop moving or doing anything it automagically pauses. Looks kind of neat
Looks like a take on the SUPERHOT time system. Could be neat

One thing I noticed that is a bit odd, is their Steam Deck only measures at 169.7 nits, which seems really low compared to the listed specs. I cannot speak on the exact brightness of my Deck, but I know it gets fairly bright.
I recently just played my Deck outside on a bright sunny day and had no issues seeing it, it definitely feels comparable to my fairly bright phone screen, so that maybe is weird.

Like Gamall Wednesday Ida I had no problem getting it running. Only tested it on Windows just now since my Linux laptop didnt have 170 GB free space ;) (and btw it absolutely installs DLCs I dont own, wasting - in my case - 32 GB of space)

External SSDs For The Win!

Speaking of Linux, the weird slowdown problems I had ever since kernel 6.0 --- where my mouse cursor would slow to a crawl when Steam was starting, when a game was starting, and even when regular wine was starting up on non-game programs; very inconvenient --- suddenly disappeared when I switched my 3070 for a 4070.

(yes, like many here, I bit the bullet and bought a 4070; I'm unhappy with nvidia as a company and I would have preferred going AMD (6950xt, more powerful for nearly the same price), but I like the power efficiency and silence of the 4070, and didn't want to risk having to reinstall if I couldn't switch video drivers cleanly; no time to mess around right now).

I have no explanation, save that maybe the switch forced some form of clean-slate reset of the driver state, and that I would have gotten the same result had I reinstalled the system or purged the drivers? Mayyybe?

It also solved G-Sync not working; it just stopped working some day on the 3070 and I never figured out why.

---

Re Far Cry 6: It is quite pretty to look at. That's the positives.

Having health bars on enemies in an FPS is weird to me. The ultra-specialised ammo types seem really out of place. Fortunately armor-piercing seems to be decent for everything so you can ignore the system. So far.

You can't sleep or control the day/night cycle in any way soooo, that's that. I played (and finished) Horizon Zero Dawn very recently (on windows; recent nvidia driver updates broke that game on Linux), so I'm used to that (and hate it), but previous Far Cry titles let you sleep. Oh well, that's progress I guess.

Then it's on my end. Ubisoft Connect says that it couldn't access the servers and that the connection was lost, so I can't even launch the game. Tried it on my PC and on the Steam Deck. Nothing so far...

I cannot play these games without talking to every NPC every update. So yeah, while FC was slower, it wasn't as huge. Crossbell is so big compared to Liberl cities.

I purchased some Zelda amiibos, I was able to buy 2 Zelda CEs. I will likely keep one and maybe sell the other (or return it)

My first Zelda game was Wind Waker, which I played at Walmart/ToysRus kiosk when I was like 8 or 9 years old. I had no idea what the game was but I do remember the beginning of Roost Island and being stuck in that one prison room in the fortress place (were you have to sneak past guard tower lights in a barrel)

I was a pretty big Zelda fan and ended up buying a lot of the Zelda games.

While I own a lot of Zelda games I have not finished all of them.

I am not a fan of the original Zelda game I have tried to play it multiple times but just couldn't get into it. I have not played a Link to the past but I have played Links Awakening (non DX version) and I liked it, I didn't beat the game but I liked what I played. I really enjoyed Twilight Princess and Wind waker as well. I played Ocarina of Time on GameCube. I played Majoras Mask on 3DS but never finished the game. I played Phantom Hour Glass and Spirit tracks as well, the controls did take some getting use to. I prefer Spirit Tracks over Phantom Hour Glass.

As for the best 2D Zelda I think that would be Minish Cap, I never finished it but I did like the visuals of the game and the gameplay.

I own the Switch Zelda games but I have not really played them

And yes I am of the mind set that BotW is overrated without actually really having played it more than a few moments. At some point in time I will play the game. Most Likely just play it on my PC and remote play on my Steam deck at a higher fps than what you can get on the Switch.

Some Steam Deck and ROG related stuff.

I watched the ROG Livestream that happened a few days ago and as far as PR stuff goes some of it was just BS.

Some of the things that stood out is how they said that the other UMPCs are "limited" Windows, Linux or Android. And we'll there are some Android ones (maybe just throwing shade at Logitech and Razer, I am not all knowing and know about all the bad stuff that Asus has personally done, but any shade thrown at Razer will always be welcome in my eyes).

The custom SoC we found was actually not true and it will be an SoC that AMD will also be selling to others as well.

I was amused when they mentioned Steam, just because of how the Microsoft person refered to it as "the Steam Store", since it's more than just a store and launcher, which. I'm guessing is why some people are concerned with Armory.

It's cool how after all these years we are seeing so many UMPCs, it does sucks how expensive they are though. Back when I was starting in college I really wanted to be able to play my PC games at school and thought a gaming laptop would be too expensive and too heavy. The Nvidia Shield Portable came out not that long after that, I really wanted one but sadly never got one.

Lifetime the Steam Deck V1 will likely sell over 3 million units, this is nice. Hopefully Valve makes some good updates to the Steam Deck V2, especially since V1 showed them that there is in fact an audience for this type of device. Maybe because of that they will invest even more into R&D for the next one. I just hope that they don't release it too soon and that they release it after they feel that it can play "modern" games without goings below 20fps type of thing.

There were a number of times with the RPG Livestream though I just thought was very dumb.

I think I played Zelda around 7 hours yesterday. I've not done that in years.

Square "didn't meet our expectations" Enix is basically only Japanese gaming company right now that is trending down. Capcom, Sega, Bandai, Koei all are doing good to amazing, but Square is somehow always down.
The sad thing is SE is still one of my favorite publishers solely in terms of game output. In the past 18 months or so I've enjoyed Final Fantasy 6 Pixel Remaster, Triangle Strategy, Live a Live, Tactics Ogre, Octopath 2, Final Fantasy Origins and PowerWash Simulator. I'm also excited for FF 16 and 7 Rebirth. They have great devs, but upper management is braindead.

Releases like 20 games within 2 months with little to no marketing and absurd pricing
They don't sell

They had their 2nd best financial year ever (only down from last year) despite having no major releases outside of forspoken flopping. They're doing great despite how much people don't want them to.

Nah I'd lean into more childish methods like outright trolling them on social media or something like that. Though I guess since he's a content creator he can go the youtube clickbait route of "why TOTK is the worst thing to ever happen to zelda" (insert gaping mouth youtube thumbnail face). But again I can see why he doesn't want to provoke a fanbase that sends fake DMCA claims to streamers merely for watching the official trailer on stream.

I saw people arguing something similar on Era and I don't agree at all. Everyone here has been saying that Square Enix is squandering the potential of their franchises with their baffling decisions on release timing and platform exclusivity. The fact that they just had a bad year in HD games and it's still one of the best years in its history shows that their HD games division is not the core pillar of their business anymore and the company is being propped up by their other divisions, namely MMO and mobile/browser.

With or without them selling almost half of their company and assets (aka their west division)?
