It's actually getting a Steam release. I didn't think they would bother after all the drama surrounding it.
Did these guys deserve the harassment for posting that stupid blog post? No.

Are they massive pricks anyway? Sure. You don’t post something like that and not get called a prick.

Straight on to my ignore list, this one.

Been playing a bit of Payday 3 as well and I got a bit of stuttering early on. I'm thinking it might be UE shader stutters?

When I search the Ooblets developer on Steam, I don't get the normal company/publisher page so I can't block them. Is there another way to do it?

This is one of my pet peeves. I'd prefer if it just took HDR screenshots so I can tonemap them suitably later, but better default tonemapping would be a good start.
Now that I think about it, I actually don't know anything about hdr images as such.
But yeah they should give an option for that I think. Just throw that raw hdr image in that same folder as the uncompressed pngs.

This shit seems legit, that's a raw HDR screenshot in Steam .png format

This looks pretty good to my eyes.
Would be interesting to see hdr off/on with their tonemapping comparison from some hdr native game with fixed time of day and such. Or like an interior location that where light conditions are static.

Limited comparison, but I took most of my AC VI screenshots in HDR, and uploaded the SDR tonemapped to Steam. As you can see, some has crushed blacks and blown-out contrasts.

The only SDR screenshots I took are the ones showing my AC in the garage.

So there’s a whole bunch of leaks from Microsoft about future plans for the Xbox division. It’s very juicy stuff, such as discussing the potential switch to ARM in 2028 and a new discless model of the Series X to launch next year.

But one tidbit that seems to have been overlooked in the Phil Spencer email about how they’ve weighed up their options to buying Nintendo, and are going to use their position as a shareholder to push Nintendo into a position to sell, is that they’re also waiting for an opportunity to buy out Valve.

Evidently they want Steam, which would be a big get for them, and an absolutely horrible outcome for PC gaming.

Thankfully there’s not much they can do that would force them into a sale, but the sharks are indeed circling again.

Good heavens. I love Microsoft's re-ignited interest in PC gaming, and that they don't hold exclusives from us. But I absolutely don't want them to own Steam. That sounds like a disaster waiting to happen if their management of Windows Store is anything to go by. :anguished-face:

I'm never buying another console.
I'm definitely getting the new Xbox controller though.

Gaben will never sell.
It has always been clear that Gaben will never sell. Really the question will always be "what will happen after Gaben?" Not only in acquisitions but in many others, will Valve continue with its horizontal structure? Will they think about going public?

That's a very good question.

Gaben will never sell.
While I agree that Gabe would never sell if given the choice, that would of course be contingent on him remaining, yknow, alive, and in possession of all his faculties (i.e., not incapacitated by senility or Alzheimer's, etc) - the man is already 60 years old. Steam falling into the hands of an Elon Musk type, or the EAs of the world, would be a nightmare scenario.

Did he ever publicly disclose a contingency plan/succession plan in the event that he kicked the bucket? Set up a trust or something?

The leak presents a good example to remind ourselves that executives from these massive corporations are always cut-throat. Some of them may look like nice guys, but deep down they are very much the same kind of people.

Yes, even Iwata and Gaben.

The email is from 2020, from before the announcement that they would acquire zenimax.
I know. The reference to the sharks was when EA were looking to buy Valve.

And 2020 is only 3 years ago. Given the same leadership is largely in place, I doubt their attitudes and goals have changed much.

3 years ago they also wanted SEGA and had Bungie, IO Interactive and others in their watchlist. The email about requesting approval to approach SEGA was even after the Nintendo/Valve one.

3 years ago they also weren't having to go through regulators to acquire ActiBlizzard. I don't doubt they still want to acquire alot, but things did change since 3 years ago.
In 2020 they had alot they wanted to target, I think Nintendo/Valve were just 2 of many options that they wanted (though wanting doesn't mean they'd be able to), but I guess they ended settling on Zenimax and ActiBlizzard? Don't think they'll be able to go on an embracer like acquisition spree anytime soon.

EDIT: One of June's leaks included a 2021 top candidates list for acquisitions, neither Nintendo or Valve were in that list, so I guess they realized these weren't realistic targets?

This is terrible. "baby baybee" sounds wrong.

Wasn't Gabe investing in wacky brain interface stuff? Maybe he can upload his consciousness. Preferably to a potato.

The prospect of Gabe dying is very worrisome for people whose Steam has been the main platform for over a decade. I hope they have an internal plan for what's going to happen to Valve after the Gabe is gone and I hope it will stay in safe and independent hands.

I've been saying phil spencer is a snake for close to a decade now and hopefully these emails will finally convince people of that. You don't get to where he is without being ruthless. I don't want to ever see another phil spencer meme or see people acquisition beg lol.

At some point Valve will get bought out, it is inevitable. Valve is a very small company among behemoths, one of them will swallow it eventually. Gabe's heirs will sell as soon as a gigantic offer comes in unless Gabe himself can make other arrangements that prohibit such a sale. In any case, like Reed Richards said:

The best we can hope for is that such a sale happens long after we are all half-senile old farts.

Well be the change you want to see.

I think from this forum we should start raising money to try to buy Valve once Gaben is out of the picture and has not become a kind of evil artificial consciousness. Hopefully Gaben survives long enough for us to have enough to make a serious offer. Of course I am running for CEO as I have good ideas and superior tastes than anyone else on this planet.

So Metacouncil people, how much are you willing to contribute to save the world of PC gaming with me at the helm? I'll let you bring all those Visual Novels you talk so much about and I'm sure some of you already have a whole expanded universe in mind for the tricky subject of Half-Life.
