In regards to Steam and when Gaben leaves. It will be a scary thing. As it was already mentioned you look at Netflix. They were a market leader (still are technically) and they were doing very well and a long cake others and they thought they could do their own thing. So they did, with a lot of it getting mixed results. You got a lot of good shows out of this and also a lot of bad.
Now despite being the market leader to Netflix improve over the years and give it's customers a better service???? Hell no. As I mentioned they are making Netflix worse and worse each year. Why cancel popular shows and keep on renewing unpopular ones?

There was this whole thing about The Office (US) and Netflix. After the show showed up on Netflix it became huge. And this was years after it had ended and the importance of syndication (and reruns and stuff). We live in a world we're the ways of yesterday don't really work anymore. I only know about some popular shows because they were syndicated and were on Nick@Night and on [Adult Swim]. I didn't watch ABC,FOX,NBC, or CBS, so I didn't even know that some of those shows even existed but they would regularly show that stuff on those channels every night. Imagine being a kid and getting woken up by, Lowrider by War at 3AM in the morning?

The way the world is going, I'm more worried about Steam even being reachable than who's in charge currently or near future. Should America or Europe get dragged into any conflicts, data-centers and digital infrastructure will be prime targets and no Government on this Earth has prepped for that contingency. There is next to no redundancy for the internet's biggest backbones, and if any of those should fail or come under attack the traffic floods will break smaller carriers/networks. :anguished-face:

I don't see the point in worrying about GabeN leaving Valve. They probably have a good plan on that.

Really depends what Gabe does with his shares/stock.
But we don't even know how Valve's shares are split.

I was not aware about Van Gogh x Pokemon collaboration until yesterday. Damn those scalpers for piling all those merchs. I am only interested in Pikachu with grey felt hat. How am I supposed to get one without getting ripped off?

I don't think there is going to be a video game crash like there was in the 80s but I do think that the current landscape of digital vs physical games so weird.

So many physical games are just dirt cheap. A lot of the times 50% or more off while the digital copies are still not that cheap.

Having so many options for games and retailers just not having enough space for it all. I would buy some of these games how ever I just don't have enough money and I have a lot of other hobbies aside from video games.

Are people actually afraid of a repeat of the 1980s crash? Circumstances and shape of the industry in 2023 are so diverse and less concentrated (even with places like Embracer and MS buying up swaths). that it would never get to the same level.

Valve isn't publically traded, so doesn't have shares AFAIK.
You can be a private company and have shares, with multiple owners, etc.

I'm no expert, but I hope there's a way for him to "posthumously" enforce his business philosophy.
I don't know if you can have some sort of "charter" that ensures that Valve cannot become a publicly traded company (like some sort of poison pill), that profit cannot come at the expense of the consumer, etc etc.

Edit: totes unrelated, but despite the stuttering I'm definitely going to buy Talos 2... that desert area is BEAUTIFUL... boy, I wish Cyan's games would look like that (imagine Riven...)

I've been hearing folk online talk about a video games crash like the 80s for about 15 years now, I'll believe it when I see it tbh

You could put the company into a trust, fill it full of cash (extracted from the company), and use the financial might of said trust to keep the company afloat without any owners.

Said trusts can have basically operate the company in whatever way it wants (it could have some sort of statement of intent or a mission, usually set by the person who set it up) - but of course they are still prone to fuckery should the wrong people worm their way into the trust or into an influential place in the company.

The other way is a worker co-op. Those are usually resilient against takeovers and market flotations. However, they usually don’t have the financial stability of a trust and are prone to the whims of the market they trade in.

I think Steam is a strong business, and if Valve keeps doing what they do, a worker co-op is probably the best thing for the company. The thing is, how much would Gabe sell the company into a worker co-op for? And what sort of timescales would that involve?

Actually, private companies can also have shares. They just aren't traded publicly. That's not to say whether Valve has multiple owners (who would thus own some share of the company) or if it's all just GabeN, but every type of company can have shares in principle

Resident Evil 4 Ada's beta outfil

Mod of Ada Wong with his beta suit in Resident Evil 4 Remake Separate Ways!
Modder Lemi21 recreated Ada's previous outfit found among the Separate Ways DLC files.

Why would I wanna use this when the DLC literally includes a cat girl outfit for her

All that is known about Valve is that they are private and self-funded.

Private companies can have shares, just they're not publicly traded.
In fact Valve does HAVE shares, since it's a CORPORATION.

Under US law you have various kinds of private companies:
  • sole proprietorships/partnerships
  • limited liability comapnies, these usually have multiple owners
  • Corporations divided into S-Corporation and C-corporation. These have differences BUT they both have shares.

All that is known about Valve is that they are private and self-funded.
Valve went fron being a LLC to being a Corporation so by definition it has shares, what we don't know is how many, who owns them, etc.
i.e. you can have a corporation where a single person owns the shares or where 100 people own them.

edit: damn, just seen other people already had chimed in on the shares thing for private companies

The 80s thing wasn't even a video game crash, it was a USA video game crash, mostly even then just Atari. Europe and Japan largely continued on as if nothing happened as far as I have seen. Given the even more global distribution now, as well as the completely different console-publisher-developer platforms we have now, it's basically impossible to see that same thing happen. If one of the biggest publishers went under suddenly (EA, say) it wouldn't have cascading crashes on Microsoft, Devolver, etc. - it could impact some console sales in the west where EA's most popular games are console sports ones but even that is debatable given the console lifespan now. If Xbox died off, Playstation (and some PCs) would just get a lot of those lost sales.

Armored Core 6 is awesome and getting me excited to play something again after Separate Ways. Problem is I can't get a solid 60fps no matter what I do. It's weird. Lowering settings doesn't seem to help.
Years later GTA V still holds up really well. Even without RayTracing that R* a-holes refuse to release on PC .

The game was a bit of a flop so it's understandable that they wouldn't give it a lot of support.

Rockstar/2K are the worst publisher on PC
In some ways yes but in some ways not. Rockstar delays PC ports and skips things like RayTracing update for PC. But it also releases great PC versions of their games (at least since GTA IV, that was their last bad PC port). Other devs and publishers release games on PC day 1 but ports are bad and they maybe get fixed year later. So in the end PC players end up in similar situation, playing game properly year later.

Interesting article about James Ohlen, a 22 year Bioware vet who left in 2018. He was a huge influence on early Bioware, with many of his personal tabletop D&D creations ending up in their games(Minsc and Boo, Edwin, Irenicus, etc).

He talks about how it wasn't just EA who kept pushing the company to make games further and further from what made them successful, but also many within Bioware who disagreed with the focus on characters/story that they were known for. David Gaider has discussed this as well, especially when he was assigned to Anthem and how people on his team resented his efforts to push narrative to the forefront and ultimately led to him quitting.
