Damn, I expected Cohh to be like "meh, seems like a game to try in the future", but no, he really likes it.

Maybe I should pick it up.

Cohh got better (maybe even way better) in this.
But even if I like this dude, I would never decide to buy a game on whether he likes it or not. Because he rarely said a bad thing about the games he streamed.

So I solved my stuttering problem in The Talos Principle 2 on my PC by capping it at 60fps. Kind of annoying since I have a 120hz TV, but there we go. I’ll take 60fps stutter free versus VRR capped at 120hz full of stutters.

Say what you will (since there are issues with the game, the devs history and stuff).

But selling that much is insanely impressive.

I'm guessing this is one of the most successful Japanese indie games in the last year?

There was that one Watermelon game, but compared to that, this thing is selling even more copies at a faster rate and higher price point (game pass cost more than $3)

It can be complicated, but the best rule for refresh rate and FPS without VRR is that FPS matches refresh rate, or can be multiplied into the refresh rate.

So if you have a 60hz TV, the best framerates are usually 30 (x2) or 60 (x1). 20 (x3) can be neatly multiplied into 60, but in all practicalities it’s too low.

For 120hz displays, the same rule applies if it’s a fixed refresh rate. 120fps (x1), 60fps (x2), 40fps (x3) and 30fps (x4).

If your framerate doesn’t match your refresh rate, you’ll get screen tearing. V-sync fixes this, but can introduce input lag and can cap your game’s framerate much lower than it’s in theory capable of.

What VRR does is it changes the refresh rate of the display in time with the framerate of the game, thus eliminating screen tearing without any of the downfalls of v-sync.

So if your game is playing at 70fps, the display will refresh at 70hz. If your framerate changes to 73fps a few seconds later, your refresh rate will adjust to match.

VRR has a limited range depending on the display, so it can’t necessarily do 1-144hz, for example. But some displays can also do the multiples thing assuming a refresh rate it can do is a multiple of the framerate.

So if your TV’s VRR range is 48hz - 120hz (a common VRR range), but your game is running at 30-35 fps, it can in theory multiply those framerates by 2 and display it in a higher refresh rate. So if your game is playing at 31fps it could change the display’s refresh rate to 62fps so the frames multiply evenly into the refresh.

VRR has its own issues related to the quality of the display, however. A cheaper panel may display different refresh rates at slightly different brightness levels. This means if your framerate varies a lot at the brightness thresholds you get VRR flickering.

And of course some games just don’t work well with VRR for whatever reason, as was my case with The Talos Principle 2.

To better answer your question, I don’t know what 60hz looks like on a 144hz display as I’ve never had one of those, but I can’t imagine it’s good. I suspect 72fps would look better as it can more evenly multiply into the refresh rate. But the 144hz display may be able to switch into 60hz or 120hz modes depending on the panel, similar to how OG Steam Deck can display at 40hz despite being a 60hz max panel.

Some games are just designed with 30/60fps in mind and whatever math they're using to accommodate other refresh rates doesn't work properly, like the insane camera judder in some arkane games at launch when not using locked 30/60/90/120 fps or Nioh 2 suddenly running in slow motion when the frame rate drops too low.

Something else that can help is setting up a custom resolution/refresh rate in the driver and using a 144hz monitor at 120hz for example, don't know if every panel supports that but i never had any problems with it.

Currently playing Monster Hunter World. I quickly created a character just to start playing as soon as possible. Not really happy with my character so I want to change it's appearance

Is it safe to use this mod to edit my character?

Not really keen to buy a DLC voucher just to change the appearance

Someone mentioned that you are kinda paying more per year for Ubisoft+ than you would pay just to buy games they are releasing XD It is not true 100% because if I remember correctly Ubisoft+ games are their Ultimate editors with all DLCs but sometimes you don't even get those DLCs in a same year you are subscribed to their services. So if we look just at main game you are technically paying same amount or more for their releases with subscription. Especially if you are not playing day 1. It is 216€ per year for Ubisoft+ Premium.
Yeah, Ubisoft+ is poor value unless you dip in to play the game you want in a month or two, but that’s clearly not Ubisoft’s intent for the service and if people start doing that then it’s not sustainable.

Ubisoft games are already mostly conveyor-belt cookie-cutter template games skinned with a distinct theme, and I suspect to make a subscription worthwhile they’d need to triple-down on the frequency of games. Quality’s gonna take a dip.

I have mixed feelings about subscription services, but publisher-only subscription services are really poor value.

The only sub that’s even shown a modicum of value is Game Pass, and I think a lot of people aren’t interested even in that. I subbed to Game Pass for 3 years a while back, and once my subscription ended I actually found I didn’t get my money’s worth out of it.

For the few games I did enjoy, I basically lost all my save progress and if I wanted to replay, have had to buy the games again on Steam.

The whole thing felt like poor value for money for me and I felt really not good about it after my sub ended. Even though I’ve spent more money buying games on Steam than I’d have saved if I’d played them on GP, I think I’ve got better value for money because of the better flexibility and permanence of those games.

And at the end of the day, I’m at a point where I could stop spending money on games completely and have a good time for years. If I’d built my library on Game Pass and needed to stop spending money, I’d basically have nothing to show for it.

Past 633k and climbing, i'm curious to see how far it'll go during the weekend

Even if this is just a survival game people seem to be latching on to the monster catching aspect when talking about it so my hope is that more companies with bigger budget will try their hand at creating more monster collecting games.
I don't care if they take inspiration from pokemon, digimon, shin megami tensei, WoFF or MHstories or this game I just wanna see more monster collecting games with a decent budget.

Im sorry, we didn't design the Epic servers to be able to handle games doing over 700k that aren't Fortnite.

I am wondering if they are talking about the epic game servers that are available to host multiple player games.

I'm starting to see jp artists creating fanart for palworld on twitter
This was when the game was at about 550k on steam, so that'd put gamepass at around 150k between pc and xbox back then

so assuming that number didn't change (it probably increased now) and you add it up to the steam CCU they're now around 900k across all platforms

Something's really off with his face/eyes in some parts and facial animations in general not great at all, very last gen.

The whip has no impact in combat and seems way overused too, it should be closer to Prime grapple beam instead.

I can just imagine how he'll constantly talk and solve the rudimentary riddles for you as you grab this and that object.

I guess with that plane and on rails stuff they're going for set pieces and spectacles, not something like Tomb Raider.

Could be fun but why didn't they give it to Arkane, an immsim Indiana Jones could rock much more than an FPS one.
Yeah I noticed the animations were a little janky. These are the kinds of things that are fixed up in the polishing stage at the end of development so hopefully Bethesda is not rushing them and they have ample time to finish the game without compromises.

And I really do hope the game takes as little inspiration from Uncharted as possible. I know Uncharted is lifted directly from Indiana Jones so the lines are blurred but I've always felt that Indiana Jones had a sense of sincerity and gravitas (in addition to the comedy and ridiculousness) that is just missing in Uncharted. Nathan Drake is a walking Joss Whedon script. I hope this game is not just a series of set pieces with puzzle sections where, like you said, the character just tells you the solution in 30 seconds. I did not particularly enjoy Wolfenstein 2 and Youngblood was even worse so I'm a bit apprehensive either way.

I have to say, within 2 days the 'discourse' around these games is already poisoned. Indiana Jones is not 3rd person enough. Hellblade is not long enough. Avowed is not isometric enough. I'm convinced that it's Sony fanboys shitting it up again (just like they did with Starfield) because they don't get to play the games.

I don't post as much as I used to as well, on either site.

Part of it is just trying to take a step back from being habitually online.

Another part as noted above is being fatigued with toxic platform warring. I don't know if it's fomo or whatever, but it feels like it's gotten pretty egregious over at the other site. It's kinda funny, mostly sad and all around tired af. It's no wonder entire communities were chased out of there.

The third element in relation to above is I'm striving more to be the change I want to see. So I've made a bit of a resolution to try and keep my posts positive. The old, "If you don't have anything nice to say..." mentality. So I've been a lot more selective on how I participate online.

It's actually kinda refreshing not to feel like I have to throw my 2 cents in on every (let's be honest) trivial bit of gaming news that is constantly churning through the feeds.
This is sad to hear. I've always found your thoughts about games interesting. Especially since you sometimes talk about genres that don't get talked about much (like war gaming). I've also used your posts more than a few times for discovery (games like Spacebourne 2). It is actually unfortunate to see so many people straight up saying they'd rather not talk about stuff online anymore.

I've mentioned this before but I first noticed an increased level of hostility and toxicity in gaming discourse a few years ago. It probably existed before that as well but I didn't care enough to notice I guess. There was a period of 1.5 years or so where I played maybe 5-6 games and enjoyed them well enough but then I'd go and check forums/reddit and people were just shitting on them endlessly. It's one thing to dislike a game and even express your thoughts but this was on another level. People hated the games so much that they'd hang around for months after finishing it just to tell everyone how bad it was. To tell people who might be enjoying them how wrong they were. If it was a multiplayer game then they'd joy in watching player numbers go down. I don't know if you guys are aware of this trend on reddit where a game has a main subreddit and it gets overrun with toxicity to the point where some people make another, new 'low sodium' subreddit just to be able to discuss the game in peace without all the negativity. This has happened for several games that I know of. It gets to the point where you just don't want to talk about those games anymore just to avoid it all. And that actually may be the point for the people who endlessly shit on games they don't like. And it has continued all the way through last year as well. Hogwarts Legacy was the bestselling game of the year and really fun to play but nobody dares to talk about it online now because of the unhinged toxicity that surrounded it when it came out. Starfield was a pretty fun game as well that got buried in the console war bullshit and now no one will talk about it either. You'll sometimes get people saying it's shit and nobody will even bother to push back because who has the energy to deal with that nonsense anymore?

My wish for gaming discourse is that it would somehow be a bit more mature and nuanced. That people would take context into account when talking about games or even events surrounding gaming. That they would not immediately assume or accept the worst possible interpretation or outcome regarding anything that happens. Like for example, the new Hitman games typically ship with about 6 levels right? And good players can finish a level in less than 2 minutes. So if I were to say that a Hitman game ships with 12 minutes of content, would you accept that? No, because that is completely missing the point of how and why people play Hitman. A few posts ago someone mentioned that the new Call of Duty is 2.5 hours long. No it's not. It's a huge game filled to the brim with multiplayer content that people will play for hundreds or thousands of hours that also includes a campaign that statistically very people care about and can be finished in 2.5 hours if you play it in the worst possible way. But that's all context that is stripped out when you say that it's a 2.5 hour game. This is just a small example of what I mean when I say that there needs to be more nuance when discussing things (in general, not just gaming). There are a lot of things happening in the world right now and I think it's important to try and understand events and outcomes with a broader perspective than you sometimes see among the gaming crowd.

I will try to keep this short since I don't think many will read this.
It's unfortunate that you would feel like this. I for one definitely enjoy reading your posts. From what I gather you are in/from Japan and you share a lot of insights about the gaming industry there, how companies operate, what gamers' prefer, the indie scene there and so on. There is simply no way I would come to know about these things if I were not reading your posts.

It's definitely interesting reading perspectives about games from folks from around the world.

We have several Palworld buyers here, how is it ?
Its great survival craft game. with monster and npc collecting.
Its similar to Craftopia in some ways but also very different at the same time.
in craftopia the monsters where just combat pets but now they are more like companions.
It seems polished and run really well on my laptop.

  • the Nintendo crowd who cry foul about the ripoffs
  • the uninformed AI witchhunters who cry foul and think any ripoff must have been done with AI (when it is easier to just use the existing model and "recolor" it instead of prompting an AI to do it and then work dozens of hours to fix all the mistakes) (apart from the shifty AI/NTF/Crypto stanning the company does)
  • the PS5 crowd who believes the game will get really successful, acknowledged, and "blow up" if it will release on PS5
  • the Pokemon Crowd who are "concerned" about the ethical implications of the game, while they ignore the 30 years of cockfighting-the-game they so love.

In genuinely curious since, other than the original 150, I'm not too familiar with pokemons design and would like to judge for myself how "valid" these allegations are.

edit: found this after a bit of search. other than the one on the top right I'm not seeing any validity to the ripoff allegations, just nintendo fans being nintendo fans...

I'm all for shitting on projects using AI assets but I feel like people are vastly overestimating how much effort you need to make "Pikachu but red".

Parody game has designs that look eerily similar to the thing it's a parody of? No way, must be AI.

I found the same image after a bit of research and even edited my post.
Like I said above, besides the one on the top right I'm not seeing that much validity to the allegations. There's a wolf, a deer, some sort of dinosaur, a flowery plant and a dragon, so unless nintendo owns those animal concepts it's hard to agree with the allegations.
The one complaining about the placement of the horns is hilarious, where should the horns be, in the deer's back?

At this point with all the AI shit out there I almost applaud a company for copying the old fashioned way. Like that still requires someone sitting down and doing hand crafted work. That's where we're at these days .

Palworld obviously didn't use AI in its creature design because the vast majority of creatures in the game were already in the reveal trailer 3 years ago, a whole year before any of these AI tools even became public, let alone popular.
Yeah, people seem to forget this game was announced while the industry was jerking off Crypto/NFTs, no one was even talking about generative AI back then.

As you can tell, this is kind of like a whole different engine now.

So let me tell you something. I love the source engine. I'm a source engine geek. The fact that the guys who made half-life know who I am and have let me use Source 2 is insane to me. They are my heroes and I don't want to hurt their baby.

So removing entities, server/client, func_button and all that shit hurts my heart. It's not done lightly. The engine since the start has really been a worldcraft (hammer) first engine. And that's worked for some of the greatest games in the world, but I don't think it's going to work for us.

After using Unity for many years, I can see the benefits of both worlds. Hammer is the king of level editors. It is something engines like Unity sorely miss, and no one has managed to top. But the range of being able to make the smallest high-concept mobile game to the largest open world terrain game is one of Unity's great strengths, too.

So what I would love to do is let people make games in s&box, and then export them as standalone games. And then sell them on Steam. And I don't want any money for that. I don't want any royalties or a cut of your earnings. It'd be totally for free. It doesn't cost us anything, so we're not gonna charge for it.

And what I'd like is to convince the rest of the company that we can make the engine that good that they should use it too. And then they can make games on it, and release them, and make me lots of money to spend working on the engine.

This all obviously needs permission from Valve, but initial talks about it have been positive, and as long as we don't fuck it all up by doing something stupid like uploading one of their games to our platform and forcing them to DMCA it, I think we should be good.
Garry is implying Valve might start licensing Source 2. You know something they had talked about doing nearly a decade ago.
