I care about my favorite game (IP at this point? It kind of its own franchise separate from the rest of FF) selling a lot to justify further investment. In the modern landscape most games need attention from streamers as well as media focus and the window for those things is also very small since people have insanely short attention spans these days and constantly move on to the next thing. But elden ring was one of the rare things that stuck around for months, it swallowed everything that was within that entire quarter of the year. I don't know if an expansion will have the same pull but any game coming out in the next few months should be worried right now.

Well, sure, but it's not on you to have the game do well, it's up to Square.

Like, the sequel to one of my favorite games of all time released last year (Alan Wake 2) and everything points to it doing bad saleswise, but I don't care, those decisions were for Remedy/Epic, Im just happy I got the game.

Can't read the article but if they did that it would certainly stop me from watching as much twitch as I do. It's so full of annoying ads when you aren't a subscriber that it's really hard to watch anymore.

I do wish there was more pushback against Apple Arcade which has never had the option for buying. I get the impression to even be on the service you have to agree not to sell the game anywhere.
My understanding is that Apple mandates iOS exclusivity for Arcade games (meaning no Android release, but other platforms are fine). One other thing they mandate is that there should be no extra monetization in any game that is on Arcade. Meaning no in-app purchases, no subscriptions, no gacha, no dlc, nothing. This is very significant in the context of the mobile gaming market where all the profit is earned from free/extremely cheap games with continuous monetization and the 'premium games' which you only pay for once do quite poorly in comparison. Sometimes a game that's already in the app store with loads of premium currencies and such appears in Arcade with all of that stuff stripped out and is a much better experience. Disney Dreamlight Valley released an expansion a few weeks ago that cost money on every platform except Arcade where it was 'free (with the subscription)'. In these cases I feel like Arcade actually adds value to the games.

In general I have no issues with subscription services. They are a godsend to people who live in poor countries like mine. A few weeks ago I saw a reddit post where someone was blown away that they could play the entire Yakuza series for just the price of a Gamepass subscription instead of having to buy 7 or 8 games now. And if someone wants to own the games they can still buy them anyway. What's the harm in this option existing for people who can't or don't want to pay more to own the license? Realistically, most people only ever play a game through once, which means owning it is really not that practically important. It happened in music where everyone listens on Spotify and just buys the albums they want to own. It happened in movies where everyone watches on Netflix and buys the blu-rays they want to own. I would not be surprised if it happened in games as well down the line. As long as we still have the option to buy the games we want to buy. Which I cannot see going away. Most of the downsides people mention about gaming subscriptions are hypotheticals. What if they started making only live service games to prolong subscriptions? You think live service games won't happen without subscription services? They'll do exclusivity deals. They'll raise prices. Already happening. Feel stressed to finish a game before it leaves the service? Then buy it. They're just video games. You cannot let these things bother you.

I think it's important to stop thinking of services as perpetual costs. Don't subscribe to a service that you are not getting active value from. Do it when there's something there you want to play. A friend of mine is paying for a month of Ubisoft+ and is planning to play through AC Mirage, Crew 3 and the new Prince of Persia. All that for 15 euros is an objectively good deal. Even if it takes him 2 months, it's still only 30 euros. Still a good deal right? What's the downside here? He won't own the games he doesn't care to own anyway?

It did start as small insignificant thing. Then it evolved in entire economy where devs were more focused to create as much cosmetics as they could and ignoring rest of the game (how it plays).
Again, nobody pays for cosmetics in a game they do not want to play. There has never been an unsuccessful game where they somehow managed to monetize it successfully. This notion that "they only care about the money and don't care about the game" is, frankly, childish. A more realistic thought would be that "they care about the money and also understand that they only get that money if people want to play their game". If you think there's some bad game out there which has successfully managed to sell cosmetics then all that means is that there are enough people who actually think it's a good game and are ok with paying for costumes or gun skins or whatever.

Totally, I normally alternate sub between two streamers I like, but it's very annoying to watch streams with ads jumping constantly and for such a long period. At least on YouTube uBlock works quite well.

I'm kind of in the same boat. I check the forum daily but post less than I used to..
Its due to a bit too much negative news, but for me also discussions about games I've got zero interest in; and discussions that have been done to death before (like "whats the best FF?", "sub services vs buying games", "is steams 30% cut too much?", "is the tadpole behind my eye evil or not and how can i remove it?")

That gives me that "social media effect" where too much talk just brings my mood down; and I dont engage anymore, I just scroll past and hope to see something more positive

Lol, the translated game title in German regions is just "auf Deutsch" -> "in German"
I looked it they made the mistake for other languages (didnt check all, and couldnt tell for languages with non-Latin scripts), and most didnt get their title translated, but the French version is similarly called "en francais". ;)

Use uBlock with scripts, I haven't watched a single ad in months

Hellblade II looked cool.

Ara also looked awesome - hope it’s a Civ killer.

That Mana game isn’t for me, but I guess fans are excited.

Avowed still hasn’t sold me, but it’s Obsidian so I’m gonna cut them a helluva lot of slack until it releases.

Indiana Jones looks shit.

Do any of you guys play Dark and Darker?
Didn't this get taken down from Steam over court/ownership dispute?

I remember watching people stream it and it looked like a lot of fun. Always wanted to try it but never did.

Honestly there seems to be a lot of potential in making a Souls like first person pvevp extractor or wtvr. I'm surprised we don't see more clones.

Would love to see FromSoft tackle a game like that next. They used to make first person games.

Something's really off with his face/eyes in some parts and facial animations in general not great at all, very last gen.

The whip has no impact in combat and seems way overused too, it should be closer to Prime grapple beam instead.

I can just imagine how he'll constantly talk and solve the rudimentary riddles for you as you grab this and that object.

I guess with that plane and on rails stuff they're going for set pieces and spectacles, not something like Tomb Raider.

Could be fun but why didn't they give it to Arkane, an immsim Indiana Jones could rock much more than an FPS one.

Once the post show excitement dies down I hope people start having a conversation about the efficiency (or lack thereof) of xbox games. I was shocked that after all these years hellblade 2 is a 8 hour budget release. I thought the whole thing that made people excited about NT being bought was that they'd have the budget and freedom to expand things, but HB1 was also a 7-8 hour budget release lol. The glimpses of combat made it look very similar to part 1 too and that was the weakest aspect of the game.

Avowed continues to look only ok at best. The environment art looks good but many other aspects looked notably behind the times and looking at the game from a rpg/crpg background I still haven't seen how this game separates itself yet. The brief dialogue snippet in today's show was so simple it could have fit in today's action AAA market. Hopefully they can show deeper stuff later on. Also the combat looked awful but I can't think of many 1st person melee games that don't.

Indy looked like it has potential but I'm disappointed in the first person combat. The fact it's using the same engine as wolf and the same backbone to it makes me wonder how this took 7+ years. Games take a long time now but that many years is only for games being built from the ground up meaning engine and mechanics/systems.

But your series is wrapped up and finished. Getting the 2nd game was the hard part so it having bad sales doesn't really affect anything.

7R still has 1 game to go and the result for Rebirth could affect it. I think it was imran who said the reception to 7R pleased SE so much that they ok'd a higher budget for Rebirth. It could go the opposite way if things change.

8 hours seems fine for something not an RPG to me, that's about how long some absolute classic tier action adventure campaigns were, it's not COD 2,5 hours.
I think they'll largely get a pass for it because it's $50 so it compares equally to something like the miles morales side game. Whether that's what people expected out of this is another story.

When talking about game length the most tiring aspect of it is the hyperbole involved (not saying this about you btw just in general). Whenever you say something is too short someone's going to inevitably respond with BETTER THAN A 80 HOUR UBISOFT GAME. Well...I can't argue with that, but there's a pretty wide gap between single digits and nearly 100 hours lol. For more linear action/adventure games the sweet spot is usually 15-20 hours for me. I enjoyed gow ragnarok despite it being like 50 hours for full completion but it definitely could have used some trimming and it doesn't need a freakin loot system.

But 8 hours also brings me back to my original point: Why did this take so long to make? Another similar example is the uncharted 4 spinoff, that came out in like a year or year in a half and was also around 8-10 hours. Nope, it ended with a cliffhanger. I wish it didn't as there's currently no sign if there's gonna be a 3rd game.

If Xbox can push out all 3 of those big games this year without delays...

and get the Starfield DLC out it would be a good year for them + gamepass (alongside all the other 3rd party releases + all the Activision shit)

That means Fable and Clockwork revolution will be for 2025.

I can only guess, but Hellblade 2's development process must be insane. All the face scanning for actors. The Mocap. The Audio engineering and hours of fine-tuning. SCHEDULING for all these famous faces and people. The graphics polishing. Etc... Etc...

Also Ninja Theory is a small studio. Maybe 100 people. This isn't like a Square Enix business department with 1,000 guys ready to slave away. Or like your example with Uncharted, isn't Naughty Dog hovering around 500 Employees with Sony add-ons/support?

Seriously?? I had no idea I assumed remedy was treating this as a hail mary lucky break considering how many publishers turned this down over the years. The fact they think they can do this again is...well it's bold to say the least lol.

I don't remember the exact headcount but their plan at the time was to take a chunk of the uc4 team and work on it while most of the rest of the studio went on to TLOU 2. If I had to guess it was roughly the same as NT's 100 people, maybe less.

All games look amazing! I’m the least interested in hellblade, linear story games aren’t just for me. Indy being FPS in the vain of Wolfenstein is nice, I feared that they would go away from that. There are enough third person adventure games, nice to have a few fps ones.

Avowed looks incredible and I can’t wait. Just my type of game. Love the look of it. Let’s just hope that it is as deep with decisions and consequences as they say.

I don’t know how solid the allegations are, but they’re out there. Now the game is available, people can check the assets to see if anything was nicked, or if the designs are just very close ripoffs.

Regardless, I feel really ick about Palworld. I get that it’s a little subversive of Pokémon, but I find the designs to be too close to those games.

People are saying the gameplay is a carbon copy of Ark too.

There doesn’t seem to be anything original about this game. In fact, it could’ve been made by an AI for all we know.

Some of their designs are kinda too close to pokemon, but that doesn't mean that they've stolen pokemon assets. I feel that these designs that are too close to pokemon are pretty much the "legally distinct" type.

This game being a survival game kinda like Ark is not surprising, since this is from the Craftopia studio, another survival game with crafting elements.

Unless they shipped those models, I don't see the issue of using assets from another game as the base line for development. It would also be fairly easy to alter the models to make them unique enough to count as original. Ninty could probably still shut it down with threat of a lawsuit, regardless of its merits though. No small indie dev can afford to go to court with them.
