Speaking of multiplayer games that were in development forever...

General opinions on Granblue Relink in here?

Sega really released 2 100+hours with 40k players top and a 90+ metacritic rpgs over the span of a week uh
Also honestly "two different" audiences, despite some having fears that one would cannibalize the other.

In the end Suicide Squad is mediocre WB game so it's price will come down quite fast. Waiting for 10€ deal :coffee-blob:

Lol
Besides the server issues and auto complete for achievements or whatever that actually was, It hasn't been pulled from being able to be purchased for a month+ so it's already having a better launch than Arkham Knight

Well, after moaning about the price of P3R. I completely forgot I have a gamepass sub...

Will give it a go and grab on a decent discount.

And time for my usual moan whenever something like this comes up. Where the hell is my PC Vanillaware games.

I don't agree that they're that different. There's definitely a lot of overlap.

The thing is, that overlap will inevitably buy the other after their first preference at either full price or the next small (~10%) discount.

Clearly both series are seeing good growth, and the CCU reflects that. I know some companies are insane (see: Square Enix) but a lot of these companies do have and use quality data to make informed decisions. Sega's is clearly paying off for them.

What I'm more interested in is if growth of the Persona and Like a Dragon IP on Steam are coming at the expense of the consoles, or in addition to.

We don't get a lot of high quality big budget SP games anymore so every time you see one of the remaining few S tier devs of those types of games go this route it cuts deep, and it's a wound that's not going to heal by some other dev taking their place because we rarely ever see new devs entering the AAA space and really leaving a strong mark (ironically Rocksteady did exactly this in 2009). So it ends up being a net loss for us while the field of remaining high end SP devs shrinks bit by bit.

Happy February, thanks for the thread Mor! Only took me 3 days to post here haha. February is usually my busy time at work, though this year a little less so. Moved to a new office building this last week.

I really want Granblue, but will have to wait unless it appears on third party sites. I use to play the mobile game a tonnn. Love all the characters.

I bought P3R ages ago using a deal I had and some rewards, but unsure when I will play. Deck perf seems a bit hit or miss though the reflections off helps.

Every time a game like SS crashes and burns it's the one good thing about what's really a sad situation overall.

Still this is better than the alternative which is a game like this succeeding and encouraging pubs to keep repeating this pattern. We seem to finally be in a place where pubs are second guessing the live service narrative that's dominated the industry for the bulk of the last decade with many of them cancelling big GaaS games that were in the works. Maybe we're entering a phase where this doesn't happen anymore, or nearly as often at least.
I feel like your post is predicated on this idea that if GAAS games fail then studios will go back to making single player AAA games. The economic realities of game development make that a difficult proposition. Creating a brand new AAA game from scratch these days takes a team of 250-500 people working for 4-5 years with the budgets touching 8 figures. And this is on the lower end of estimates. We've seen games needing up to 1000 people, costing 200+ million dollars and taking even longer. And the thing is, at the end of it all, the game has to be really good because it needs to sell several million copies to make money. That's the big gamble in all of this. If a studio spends all those resources and puts out a game that doesn't sell enough, investors will rightly not want to put in that much money all over again in the hope that they'll get a win after another 5 years. That's the crisis facing the AAA gamedev industry and is why every publisher is looking to find a GAAS hit and generally have continuous monetization from any game they actually put out.

Feels like the only companies that can justify the big budget single player experiences are the console platform holders. That's only because they a) make money from subscriptions, licensing and hardware and b) can sort of write off a loss because it attracts customers to their platform. And even they are all looking at continuous monetization for their games and services now. You think about a company like CD Projekt Red or Larian and honestly, they're living charmed lives right now, so to speak. Cyberpunk 2077 was a disaster at launch but fortunately for them it still sold like crazy and they have the benefit of being in a relatively lower cost country. If it had been an actual commercial failure then CDPR could have been in deep trouble. Larian fortunately got a blockbuster on their hands but their previous few games, while great, never really sold that many copies. It was enough to keep them going but that level of muted success might not have been enough for them to continue given the rising costs nowadays.

All this is to say that I don't see the pendulum swinging back to pure single player experiences and away from GAAS/continuous monetization until something happens that fixes the budgets of AAA games. On the bright side, there are still enough games like Yakuza or Hogwarts or BG3 to enjoy and hopefully games like Dragon's Dogma 2 or Homeworld will be mostly one and done experiences too.

P3R and Yakuza 8 are overrated, there I said it.

We always knew that GBF would be the better of the 3 games .

Joking aside I still think it's a shame how Grand Blue had to change its name to Grand Blue Dreaming because of how it has a similar name to GBF. They even joke about it prior to the name change. It's a very funny manga that I do suggest people go and check out.

But yeah over 100k is really good. I'm hoping that Cyganes takes notice and does in fact improve the PC version as they have mentioned in their patch notes of doing.

Speaking of Cyganes before I did have some criticism about their Twitter ads. They have ads that promote both the PS and PC versions of the game, but the issue is that they all just link to their homepage and that homepage doesn't link to the game stores. At most it says try out the demo on PS. If you are paying money for the ad, wouldn't it be better to take you to the Steam page? Or in the case of the PS version, to a page telling you where you can buy a copy of the game?

No I don't expect these studios to go back to making SP games as usually by the time things devolve into this point the studio in question is already a shell of its former self due to a ton of key departures over the years. Like bioware right now is going back to SP games and we'll see how that goes but the bioware everyone loved is gone...there's maybe a tiny handful of those people still there. Rocksteady we know is a shell of itself and the founders left over a year ago. We know arkane austin had a TON of turnover due to redfall's development, I'm not sure how many key people are still there outside of harvey smith.

But like I said what other choice is there? If these games succeed that only spreads the live service push to other pubs and studios and we end up losing even more quality studios to this plague. I know it's cool to hate on naughty dog in recent years but everyone should be thanking whatever deity they worship that they came to their senses and were able to convince their publisher to scrap this planned live service route. They were heading down the same cliff so many others fell off of but they were one of the only ones to not dive off.

The budget thing is more of a graphics push and also I think a massive part of it is wildly unoptimized development burning away countless money and time. Going back to naughty dog for a second we're now almost 4 years past TLOU 2's release and their next game is apparently nowhere near ready to reveal let alone release. This is a huge freakin problem! FF7 Rebirth, a 100 hour game, was made in the same length of time that ND has been mostly spinning its wheels and before anyone says "it's an iterative sequel" well maybe more games should iterate things? Like TLOU 2 already had some of the best TPS combat ever, do they really need to go back to the drawing board and start entirely over for their next game? That just seems extremely wasteful to me and is a reason why things have gotten so out of hand on the western side of game development.

What a packed thread! Thanks Mor!:blobmorning2:

So many of the big releases having sweet physical CE's means I'm PC-light for most of this month sadly, with only Tomb Raider Trilogy being a sure shot to play on Steam (praying it runs well on Steam Deck).
EDIT: I also picked up the full set of FF Pixel Remaster thanks to the deal posted in last month's thread, and I promptly played through 95% of FFIV in 2 5 hour sittings (4x XP, 4x Gold). Steam Deck is helping me rediscover that JRPG love!

Copped the collectors ed for P3R and Granblue Fantasy Rising on PS5 - still waiting on Sega to give me my digital code thanks to their amazing fuckup, so I've been double fisting GBFR and Like a Dragon 8. Both amazing games, but LAD8 is just insanely good.

I wonder why they didn't get Supermassive Games to make the remaster of "Until Dawn?" Too busy with "The Dark Pictures" anthology and/or working with 2K again on a sequel to "The Quarry" or a new IP?
I know this is from Thursday still, but if you want to know why Sony replaced Supermassive, here's the full explanation. SM apparently shopped around an Until Dawn 2 prototype that SIE at least partially funded, which didn't go over well with the Ryan Gang.

Also this:

When I think of Batman the batman animated series is the first thing that comes to mind so Kevin Conroy is literally my Batman in my head. I'm more insulted/angry that websites/etc are going around saying shit about how they "ruined" his stuff. It's not like he's around anymore to defend or say he didn't like xyz so it's just stupid to even speculate on it.

I personally viewed it as "Hurray! I get to enjoy something else with my favorite batman actor even though he unfortunately passed away"

Is the Suicide Squad game going to ultimately be an absolute financial disaster? I don't really know or care but I'm going to buy it when I can

Name me any other anime* that drops MechWarrior on screen out of nowhere. That's right, you can't.

*God I would recommend reading the novels instead of watching the anime any day, but the books are like $15 each whereas most in here probably already have a Crunchyroll sub.

Looks like it's time to finally remake Gen 5

I'm not expecting much but I'm still expected to be very disappointed with it.

I heard the gen 4 remake was just bad.

Gen 1 and gen 2 remakes I have played and people praised those games.

Gen 3 remake I heard was decent.

Gen 4 was bad though.

Unless gamefreak does something crazy and gives it a 2D-HD look (octopath traveler). I don't think it will look good and be a shame on the legacy of the games. Gen 5 was the last game to use pixel art and the pulled all the stops for the games.

I normally don't buy Pokemon games at launch anymore but I will for these ones sadly. I will also be buying the special edition Switch that it comes with as well.

Oh Steam beta client got some screenshot and HDR love.

Fixed misc. regressions in the screenshot manager
Added support for saving uncompressed HDR screenshots as AVIF
Corrected Steam overlay colors when games have HDR enabled

I recall some folks had bunch of issues with the new screenshot manager, I wonder what exactly they fixed.

Finished Darksiders Warmastered Edition last night. It is good fun even though they did drag some parts a bit more than they should. It is noticeable how X360/PS3 era it is in game design but it is ok. Metroidvania part could be better a bit but as other things it's fine. combat can be simple or bit more complex if you decide to learn all combo moves and upgrade character. Story is ok for what it is, i will see how other sequels will add to it (even though it is big chance that we won't see conclusion like ever). Overall i enjoyed it, i finished game in like 20h with some exploration. i will take a break a bit before i tackle sequel.

Also this is 6th game i finished this year, all 6 i played and finished on Deck XD Maybe it is now time to move to Pc a bit and tackle Phantom Liberty while i play Dave the Diver on Deck now and then.

Gen 4 was a shoddy remake, but more because it was rushed like hell. With some patches it's... okay, but the art is pretty bleh, on top of new additions being kinda crappy.
Gen 1&2 remakes (on GBA and DS) are really great, especially Soul Silver&Heart Gold, the Switch remake in let's Go was also pretty good, if gimmicky for captures.

The gen 3 remakes on 3DS are possibly the very best games in the entire franchise, talking about it with some Pokémon "pros" (in Showdown and VGC), it was fairly unanimous that while it might not be the fan favourite (mine is gen 5 actually), gen 3 was considered to be the best gen all around since it has very few problems, and the remakes remove most of them (like the lack of physical/special split), adds tons of good new content (and not only endgame) and a lot of nice QOL issues are addressed... and come back in later games for some reason.

So if gen 5 is not rushed again, I am very hopeful for them. I'm hoping they fuse Black&White with the second game too, but that seems a bit unlikely, as they are true sequels and not extra versions like the rest.
I didn't like the art in Diamond&Pearl but Let's Go would be quite a good base for them.

I'm really happy about this. I run HDR basically all the time now (either natively or AutoHDR) and even with the improvements in tone mapping the SDR screenshots never really come out right.

Even if it's still hard to post HDR screenshots (and expect people to actually be able to see them as intended), having HDR versions at least allows you to tweak how they are mapped into SDR per-screenshot.

Add Persona 3 Reload to the list of games that syncs graphics settings by Steam Cloud.

What’s weird though is that it doesn’t sync all graphics settings. Graphics settings (FPS limit, rendering scale, shadow quality, ray tracing) are synced, but display settings (resolution, V-sync, full-screen) are per device and not synced.

So at the very least, you won’t run the risk of launching the game on a device with an incompatible display and not being able to play until you edit an ini or return to the original device and switch to a lower resolution… but switching on ray tracing on PC will basically tank performance on Steam Deck.

Thankfully that’s the only setting which seems to be broken on Deck, and Valve are testing a fix in Preview. It’s definitely not a hardware limitation as Steam Decks running Windows have no problem with this game’s ray tracing.

Scrolling through PC game pass made me realize how few games there are on the service, dunno, I felt there were more games. Says 149 games here which is very little considering how many games releases on PC.

They are? All I've seen is people say how disappointed they are
Well some compared it to Agents of Mayhem which I liked a lot, but better.

The Xbox community is going through some rough times with all the rumors about Microsoft releasing (some of ?) its games on other consoles. I can't say I blame them, Microsoft's strategy would be very confusing for me if I was an Xbox owner. I am very curious to see shat their finalized plans look like.

Was this on the Deck? I remember reading all kind of reports on ProtonDB about this game not working entirely correct.

How did it work for you, and what tweaks did you do (if any)?

You need to install media foundation (it is basically downloading zip file, launching script, copy dll file to game folder and add launch argument in Steam). After that it works without issues. i run game at max settings, 1920x1200 resolution and got locked 60FPS (i dropped it to 50FPS just to save on battery a bit).

They're slowly going third party like SEGA
Basically this.

Game Pass has peaked, and growth has slowed to a crawl.

First party games aren’t driving console sales, and when people do buy the console they aren’t buying many third party games.

I think they’ve been strong-armed by the money men into agreeing testing the waters of going third party. If these games sell I expect their first party ambitions die in the future.

It really wouldn’t surprise me if the Xbox hardware business is basically controllers 10 years from now. They’ll probably still operate a PC store and PC + cloud Game Pass business for as long as that’s profitable, but who knows if they’re sustainable.

Won’t miss ‘em. I think Microsoft has done some good stuff for the games industry, but by and large they’ve been more of a curse than a benefit. I think they’re better suited as a third party publisher.

I'm currently playing Spec Ops the Line since it was recently delisted. I've never played the game before.

I feel like I should play more Xbox360/PS3 era games on my PC because of how well the run. Max settings at 1440p. I'll wait until I upgrade my PC again before playing games for PS4 and beyond.

I believe in the heart of the cards. Also no PS or Xbox versions being released it seems

I think this is the Yu-Gi-Oh game I remember playing on the GBA when I was in elementary school, it was either this one or another one that came out a few years later. I sort of thought me the rules of Yu-Gi-Oh.

Little did they know.

Also in the Japanese stream the dudes are also laughing.

So in the English one they straight up mention Pokemon despite saying how they can't say it. And the Japanese streams says they don't want to comment in the trailer, or at least one of the dudes said "no comment" when asked what they thought of the trailer.

I'm going to look into the Chinese stream as well as see what they say.

Guess Im gonna pick up Suicide Squad at some point after all, people seem to have a lot of fun with it.
There's still time to avoid making this mistake lol. Don't listen to places like official threads those things are always circle jerks at launch* and people reassuring themselves that they didn't just burn $70-$100.

*the one exception I remember to this was the outer worlds OT. That's the most negative OT I ever saw especially during the honeymoon period of a game's life.
