So... Prince of Persia is out on Steam in a few hours, with achievements. And there's Steam Deck support too, the game uses an invisible lightweight version of Ubisoft Connect.

On the other hand, still mandatory login with a Ubisoft Connect account and still no support for Steam's cloud saves or family sharing. And of course there's Denuvo as well.

I'm really torn on this one. It seems to be one of the best metroidvania's ever made and Ubisoft finally made a new game that isn't live service or checklist open world. On the other hand, I still hate that company for dozens of reasons and I really don't like mandatory login for single player games because of privacy and game preservation concerns.

Let's see what the price will be...

It's up there with Hollow Knight and Super Metroid IMO. It's currently 40% off on EGS, so I assume the Steam price point will be similar.

Sony could have gotten money from me for 2 games this year, but they decided that they don't want my money for some reason.

Specs seem fine to me, especially since they are not including DLSS (upscaling) for the resolution targets.
I suppose the near 200GB is a lot but I don't have more than a couple games installed, and a 2TB SSD, so whatever.

If you want to vote with your wallet I would say that this game is a pretty good candidate. If the game flopped on Ubisoft Connect and EGS and it sells well on Steam, it will send a powerful message to Ubisoft.

About the Included Games:
Doom (1993) - Original Version

The demons came and the marines died...except one. You are the last defense against Hell. Prepare for the most intense battle you’ve ever faced. Experience the complete, original version of the game released in 1993, now with all official content and Episode IV: Thy Flesh Consumed.

Doom II – Original Version
Hell has invaded Earth, and to save it, you must battle mightier demons with even more powerful weapons. This beloved sequel to the groundbreaking DOOM (1993) introduced players to the brutal Super Shotgun, the infamous Icon of Sin boss, and more intense FPS action.

TNT: Evilution
The UAC relocated their experiments to one of the moons of Jupiter. A spaceship, mistaken for a supply vessel, was granted access. But when it got close to the base, demons poured out. All your comrades were slaughtered or zombified. This time it's not about survival. It's about revenge.

The Plutonia Experiment
Every effort has been made by the nation's top scientists to close the seven interdimensional Gates of Hell, but one portal remains open. Alone, you must infiltrate the ravaged base, defeat the demon Gatekeeper, and seal the last Hell portal before the undead take over the world.

Master Levels for DOOM II
This expansion includes twenty additional levels, all with the same hell-spawned horrors and action of the base game. Each level was created by independent designers and supervised by id Software.

Sigil
Created by id Software co-founder, John Romero, and released as an episode-sized mod consisting of 18 new maps, Sigil fits in between the timelines of DOOM (1993) and DOOM II. Baphomet, the gatekeeper of Hell, “glitched the final teleporter with his hidden sigil, whose eldritch power brings you to even darker shores of Hell. You fight through this stygian pocket of evil to confront the ultimate harbingers of Satan, then finally return to become Earth’s savior.”

Legacy of Rust
Created in collaboration by id Software, Nightdive Studios, and MachineGames, Legacy of Rust is the newest episode for DOOM, and the first official episode since DOOM II to feature new demons and weapons. This 16-map Episode is broken up into two 8 map sections: The Vulcan Abyss and Counterfeit Eden.

Greetings, raiders!

After over a year of work, the
Resurgence Update
is finally here and with it brings an extensive number of changes.
Most parts of the game has been changed in one way or another, and we cannot wait for all of you to jump in and try out this new version of RAID.

If you wanna read upon the entire thing, here's the
Full detail change logs
!
Lets get started then, shall we?

Proficiencies 2.0
The old skill system has been replaced in order to freshen up the gameplay experience and provide more unique experiences between each class. We wanted skills to be more interesting where unique builds are actually possible, while also hopefully avoiding mandatory picks.
You can equip up to 10 different proficiencies: A Warcry, a Boost, and 8 talents.

Besides the already existing warcries, we have also added 3 new ones:
  • Silver Bullet (Recon)
    • Load up on high velocity rounds, and pierce through any cover. Also highlights enemies through walls.
  • Sentry (Assault)
    • Gain perfect accuracy at the cost of movement speed, perfect for mowing down hoards of enemies.
  • Pain Train (Insurgent)
    • Initiate an uncontrollable charge, knocking down and damaging every enemy infront of you.
  • Note: Due to future reworks regarding how some warcries work, Demolitions hasn't received a new one for now.

If you want to read more into how this new system works check out our
Deep Dive
!

Carry & Loot overhaul
We finally did it, a new way to carry things!

The raiders have hit the benches a little and now are able to carry more then just 1 type of loot at a time.
All classes can carry different amount of items, and all loot items have different carry weights that impact how much can be carried.
There have also been new skills added that can increase your carry limit even further, allowing you do potentially carry 9 gold bars at once, keep in mind some items like bodies cannot be stacked.

The significance of loot has increased overall, with secured loot granting gold bars even outside of Outlaw Raids, so get robbing those trains and treasuries.

Enemy Rebalance
Closing the floodgates

Enemies have been tweaked to be less bullet spongy, their spawn rates were also lowered and their responsiveness has been improved. They should now be considered a threat on higher difficulties even in small groups.

Note: to compensate for enemy health reductions, all weapons have had their damage, accuracy and other stats tweaked.
PS: No, your weapon upgrades won't get reset again.

Officers are now equipped with a radio backpack, making them more recognizable at longer ranges and in large crowds.
You may also notice a new elite officer variation added for the Very Hard difficulty.

Optimization & Visual Improvements
Perfect is the enemy of good

We have made big effort to improve the visual fidelity of the game, with all maps receiving complete lighting reworks and even some fresh new textures. There are still maps however that can look pretty potato, so there will definitely be more improvements made on that front in the future.

Additionally many of the frequently reported stuttering issues and engines crashes have been fixed, and the game should now perform much better then before.

Audio, UI, and Everything Nice
A lot of unused voice lines have been properly implemented, some UI elements were refreshed, and bunch of new quality of life options were added.
If you're not a fan of the funny mustache man, you may be pleased to know that you can now turn off the post mission videos if you so choose!

Mod Tools
With this update, we are also releasing our first official modding tool!
The Bundle Browser tool will allow everyone to open and extract assets from the game easily. Its still in early stages and only has limited functionality, but overtime we're hoping to to add more features to it such as automatic ScriptData conversion, drag and drop extraction support, quick searching etc.

Note: For technical reasons Bundle Browser is not compatible with other version's of the Diesel Engine besides the current RAID update.

You should find the Raid: World War II Modding Tools automatically added to your library already.
In the future we're going to try to release more tools for the community as well. These tools will all built in parallel to internal tooling we are making for ourselves, so whatever we get we'll make sure you get a version as well.

Addendum
This past year has been a big challenge for us, what started as a skills rework ballooned into a huge
project to fix as much stuff as we could. It has taken us countless nights and overtime to make this possible. We have put everything we had into this update, and even tho we haven't been able to do everything we wanted to, we're still proud of what we were able to achieve and hope you're going to enjoy it regardless of some issues still being present.

If you do find issues or you have suggestions, be sure to voice them on the forums or on our Discord. There are always unexpected problems that can arise, and while we can't promise to quickly remedy every issue, but we will try our best!

A huge thanks to all the community feedback from beta testers and outside members alike who helped us shape this update.

We promise that we will try our best to deliver future updates at a quicker pace, we know having to wait such long times for updates sucks. For a while, we are going to stick with the current update and try to iron out all the issues that will inevitable arise, before starting on something new.
One thing for sure, is we're really going to need some time to relax before we start thinking about what's next, but we are already full of ideas.

Now with all that out of the way, time to give those nasty Krauts a good kicking!
- The M.U.G Team

Done with Twitter. Realized I never really use it anymore and I'd rather not support something that grotesque monstrosity has their talons in.
You are late as fuck but better late than never !

Twitter, in its current state, should be outlawed.

Bit of an inflammatory title but they did more or less say that's why it doesn't have it. It's a hilarious excuse because a game this year figured out how to have a pretty deep action combat system and still have controllable party members.

The kicker is it's not like DA has some unheard of deep action combat system either. They've already gone on record saying it has less skills than any of the previous games and the party members can only hold 3 abilities at once (less than even mass effect). Their biggest addition to the combat seems to be a parry button, which every pseudo action game has for years now. They've said more about what the game doesn't have anymore than things it actually does.

Meh, I'm fine with it. Rarely swap to other characters in RPGs anyway unless forced.

The 7R games have no trouble letting you control other people despite having full action combat with dodges, parries and even air attacks. Even tales of arise came pretty close to figuring it out too.

Like with FF16 this is just a studio that isn't as talented making excuses for why their game can't do what others have already figured out.

The real reason is that they designed it to be a simple action game, and they did not want to develop the animations for half a dozen other characters, and balance the game around their abilities.

Honestly, maybe this isn't even a bad thing. Modern Bioware is kinda shit at combat, so dumbing it down is maybe not the worst thing. I'm more worried about how it seems the writing is taking a turn for the worse too. Still can't believe they are swapping Solas, the villain they built up over an entire game, for two faceless, generic evil elf gods that are complete unestablished. It's like if a football team had both Messi and Ronaldo ( both in their prime, somehow), and then decide to put them on the bench.

I don't know if I have anymore Doom and Doom 2 in me.

I played them so much in the past 5 or so years.

I did the playthrough of the modded BFG versions.

I then played through them again when they did the 60fps update on my PC

Then once more on my Deck including some Doom 64.

These new enhancements don't really look like much. The bonus created levels thing is interesting tho maybe I'll check it out later down the line.

Feels like this will be a Final Fantasy XV type of deal. Gonna be a lot of busy shit happening on screen at all times but not much control from your point of view. Hopefully the story, environments and at least the boss fights are good + well designed.

The characters, world and downtime in XV is what made that game fun/memorable for me.

Sonic X Shadow Generations will be playable at the show, marking its first playable appearance in Europe.
Sega will also have a playable build of Atlus‘s Metaphor: ReFantazio, which is also making its playable debut in Europe.
However, it also notes that “completing the line-up of playable titles on the Sega stand is an as yet unannounced project”.
I think it could be a new two point game (two point hospital/two point campus), since the two point studios twitter account has been teasing something recently?

Not sure Y8 is as low budget as most people seem to think. It had a significantly higher marketing push than any past yakuza game, even doing commercials with celebrities, and the end result was it selling pretty much the same as all the other multiplat yakuzas. They do a pretty good job keeping their budgets in line (and honestly their reuse of every minigame for like 10 games now has gotten painful) but that's still a higher budget than 7 for roughly the same result.
I agree that Yakuza 8 likely has a much higher budget than any other Yakuza that came before it.

That said, I'm also very certain that it has a total lower budget than Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Hence, if Yakuza 8 underperformed relative to expectations (our speculation, given the lack of celebratory press releases), then I imagine that Square experienced an exponentially larger burn. I've finished Rebirth front to back, and from what I saw that game must have been expensive af to make.

And yeah unfortunately it seems like this genre has a pretty hard cap on its sales which limits what it can do but I don't think I can ever come to terms with that. Indie jrpgs like sea of stars and chained echoes while good for what they are, are still chasing SNES era games which is far too much regression for me. Meanwhile many publisher backed games (even from atlus whose last game sold like 7m copies) still seem like they're targeting the ps3 and this isn't just visuals it's also about game depth too. There's only so far you can take things when you're so severely restricted by budget or tech and you end up just retreading old ground constantly. That's just stagnation.
Yes, JRPGs sadly do have a fairly hard cap on their sales. The best case scenario is probably something like Atlus, where the games are made with a manageable budget, lowering the threshold for success - ideally, you'd just make up for the comparatively inferior technical chops with A-grade art direction.

Regarding your correlation of budget to game depth though: I don't think it follows. I'd argue that the modern Persona games have a lot more "depth" to them than Final Fantasy Rebirth (which to be clear, I enjoyed a lot) ever did, and they accomplished that on a comparatively lower budget. Durante's points above regarding Falcom's output are equally valid. Hell, I thoroughly enjoyed the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters (the ones that I played so far, anyway), which were made for relative peanuts.

--------

Bought entirely too many games on Steam as of late (outside of the Steam sale, too). I always get in trouble whenever I browse Metacouncil, as somehow I keep getting recs relevant to my interests. You guys are good at this shit! :cold-sweat:

I'm lukewarm on Thank Goodness You're Here so far, as I feel its humour might be too British for me to fully appreciate, but its fun enough to play the rest of the way through I suppose. Hype to finally play Prince of Persia tommorrow!
