Well, since Rise of Industry declined Epic's deal I guess that is only fair that I put it a few places ahead in my wishlist. Not in the mood for it right now, but damn, I might buy it anyway just to show some support.

In a somewhat close note, this thread made me wonder how many devs went to Epic and were refused? I know that there was one case but that didn't went public, but I bet that there was other publishers / devs that got their way to the moneyhats refused. Shit, I'm wondering how devs of that Burnout 3 """"""spiritual sequel"""""" managed to get accepted by Epic.

Nice to see devs agreeing with us. But! I think it's wrong to dump them together with offensive language and give the impression they were being offensive themselves. This might make them try to distance themselves rather than double down on it with us. We don't need to raise issues with such attitude and name calling and such (when trying to raise awareness and not just casually talking to each other), just the truth vs misinformation and ignorance. Developers don't necessarily want to burn bridges with powerful entities like Epic just because they disagree with the exclusivity stuff.

Edit: the text actually seems fine, it's that fuckepic thing that gives off a bad vibe to me.

Someone on Fuckepic posted a tweet I made out of context and didn’t censor my name, it got upvoted to the top and the only person who commented on the poor censoring job got downvoted to hell. Great place.

I wasn't aware of this, thanks for posting. This is a great motivation to keep raising my voice against Epic or any other anti-consumer crap.
I guess I'll be buying Rise of the Industry soon to support the devs for refusing Epic's offer.

It's also good to hear an actual developer confirming that Epic requires an exclusivity deal of you want your (not already popular) game on their store. Seems Epic isn't as pro-developer as they are trying to make us believe...

I tried the Rise of Industry demo a few days ago and liked it quite a lot, I was waiting for a sale but I guess I'll pick it up right now.

Imagine if instead of wasting all that Fortnite money on scummy moves they invested it in hiring pros in the field to make a great client and services for both consumers and developers rather than boast about how they're having none of it, roadmap or no roadmap. And then also doing their own sales and eating the cost so you could get a new game 50% off on EGS while the devs got paid the same as if it wasn't discounted/more than on Steam and elsewhere where it would be available without a discount (unless Valve and other sellers decided to price match EGS and still give the devs the same money per copy, which would still be good PR for Epic). I'd have probably bought games there myself even fully understanding it wouldn't be something that lasts and is just done to get their footing in the market, as long as the client was good and their attitude towards consumers and developers similar to Steam's rather than this walled garden deal and their bullshit towards us. But they're just doing everything wrong instead. I just don't understand, are they inherently jerks and can't get over it?

Great news indeed. So tired of people downplaying the effectiveness of customers collectively speaking out and rebelling, rather than sitting by idly as Epic tries to screw with PC Gaming. :coffee-blob:

Hopefully people keep it up. I've stayed true to my own goals, not a cent to Epic, don't even have an account! 🖕

Wait
You never watched The Mummy? That is like the 4th indiana jones movie that never was.
Can't say I'm much of a movie person. Never saw indiana jones. I did see Mummy and Mummy Returns a long time ago but back then my English was still... o_O Not great.

I didn't know there was a game based on the movies I guess?

I'm still pretty sure that opt-out checks like that are a GDPR violation. But as a scummy US citizen I have almost no digital rights.

The mummy movies did get video games but I dont recall them being any good.

While we don't know for a fact this happened I feel like it's a pretty damn safe bet that they tried to buy Bloodlines 2 exclusivity and was turned down by Paradox too. It would be nice to get confirmation of that somehow but come on...it's Bloodlines 2. It's going to be a pretty big PC game next year. You'd have a hard time convincing me that Epic didn't at least try.

So you can sort of add Paradox to the list of people turning them down. Maybe in the "unofficial" column until more info is known.

Theres no way in hell they didn't offer them a deal. But unlike Rise of Industry they probably didn't want to throw down a ultimatum where you HAVE to be exclusive to release on EGS because if Paradox said no Epic would lose a huge release.

I saw that post too and it makes me glad. There absolutely should be consequences to taking those toxic deals. They show naked contempt for both the platform's health and for the consumers themselves.

Bonus point if the studio had relied on crowdfunding before (cough Heart Machine, cough Obsidian) and subsequently instantly burned the entirety of its hard-earned goodwill.

to be fair - i'm pretty sure Obsidian didn't have ANY say in that deal (i believe they even said as much during their PAX panel, just before Q&A) .... it's just that Private Division sold out wholesale ... they gave away both their games at once: The Outer Worlds and Ancestors

Hmmmm, its all pretty standard business however. Many companies evaluate deals from bigger companies all the time.
I own a small meditation game on steam that is in early access, and the lone developer noted he was approached by ubisoft, and after having a few conversations the deal did not happen for whatever reasons. I believe another lone dev posted on reddit , he too was approached by publishers
but the deals were so one sided he declined and his game is not even out in a playable state yet.

So people declining Epic, isnt really anything special, those same people also have declined others and will continue to evaluate
offers in the future. When I was at Valve, they were evaluating potential buy out offers all the time. Gabe had no interest in selling
but that did not stop offers, and any good business person has to evaluate them even if you decide to decline.

Bottomline is content is king. All these big companies need content and they are always on the lookout for low risk acquisitions
they can use to bolster their portfolios.

Now if a deal doesnt work out , and it can be from either side , just because you decline doesnt mean you were in a power position.
It means the offer did not contain the terms or payout you wanted, and there were no more avenues to negotiate. You dont get to the decline deal stage without listening, and engaging. Now its nice to take advantage of the current climate, but all it shows me is all these developers are open to potential deals.

Things change in business all the time. So a company may say no today, and yes next year.

I would lay half the blame squarely on the shoulders of Urquart. I think it very unlikely in such a small industry that he didn't know this was coming when he signed with Private Division. Either way I agree that PD sold out, but they still burned Obsidian in the process. They can't return to kickstarter after this.

Didn't they sign with Private Division years ago though? How could they see EGS coming.

As I suspected, the Rise of the Industry devs didn't actually get an offer from Epic. The devs spoke out against exclusivity deals, but I'm curious what would happen if Epic actually offers them 2 million dollars for exclusivity...

I've been avoiding much of the epic store talk, I missed that outer worlds has been taken off steam, only saw it now. this buying to remove games from other stores is complete crap, I hated it when microsoft did it with tomb raider and I hate it now.

I read the thread, but stayed away from the video because I had no idea (and still kinda don't) know who the person in the video is.
His arguments are sound, and certainly pertain to aspects of EGS, but rant videos generally aren't my thing, and it seemed like a rant video.
I stand corrected and ashamed :crying-face:

Ross gives some good pointers to think about
Even if not everyrhing he says is corrext or agreeable with, they are outweighed by the points worth thinking about.

Doesn't Valve's new API have VAC support? Facepunch said they might stop supporting Linux for Rust because of this, which is super shitty.

But the game is Steam exclusive so whats stopping them from just porting the game to Valve's API? Epic would lose a huge client in the process.

If they used another anti-cheat solution then that probably means they found Valve's worse I imagine.

Maybe they can fork the two versions so there's no interplay between them and the Linux version only uses VAC but I guess that's extra work they don't care for.

It does, but that's not the issue.

The issue is that previously, EAC was working on Linux support. Which means games on Steam that are playable via Steam Play / Photon would be able to use Easy Anticheat. This is no longer a thing. So, say a game using EAC was ported to Linux, they would need to use a different anti-cheat and that also means they would need to update the Windows version as well. Which means they might not even want to go through the trouble.

This completely stops anyone from porting/developing games for Linux with EAC.

I don't think Epic is concerned about losing a client. I feel this is a direct attack to Steam. Why would you even purchase an anti-cheat company? This is literally the first time I've ever heard of this.

Yikes. Epic Games is basically coming in hot on EA as the industry's worse company - IMHO.

IIRC EAC has been blocking Steam Play & Proton for a long time now. Dead by Daylight's forums has a bunch of posts from people not being able to play with SteamPlay because of EAC. This has been an ongoing issue since at least August. The game opens fine but you're met with a "easyanticheat failed to initialize" error upon opening.

It sucks because it means theres absolutely no way to play EAC games on Linux anymore, and considering how much of a vendetta Sweeney has against Valve and Linux, I doubt that’ll change anytime soon.

I'll second the sentiments expressed here regarding the news about EAC. I don't think it's very effective by itself but it shows further the willingness of Epic to poison the PC gaming well in order to get ahead.

My friend who is new to PC gaming was staunchly defending Epic today.

"It's just another browser, who cares? You're being prissy about having to download software dude. It's like Xbox vs PLaystation but you don't have to pay for Epic"

There was just no getting through to him. My buddy and I should take back all the the hand-me-down parts we gave him XD
