Here’s ghosttrick’s big bad post that got him banned for a week.
Unbelievable. It's hard to imagine how anyone could take the moderation on that site seriously. What a bunch of ignorant schoolyard self aggrandizing jackasses.

Edit: just read a bunch more of the thread where Durante was chastised by a former mod actively backseat modding with the usual loads of condescending pseudo formal flowery language delivered in kindergarden teacher tone meant to impress just how lofty and unbiased the site's ideals are. This makes me SO fucking angry. Forums and social media are a huge way people exchange real information about popular media, and they have a massive influence on how people perceive it all (laugh about "influencers" all you want -- there's a reason they get paid to do it). I returned to PC gaming after a very long absence around 2016, and before that, I genuinely thought Steam was a cesspool of porny anime, asset flips, and shovelware, and I wanted to avoid using it. It literally wasn't until I spent some time reading the PC community threads on Gaf that I realized how wrong that was. Era has a huge number of users, and the site is actively shutting down reasonable discussion about some world changing shifts in a massive gaming platform. It's completely bizarre. It's going to influence peoples' opinions. It makes me wonder if they're not monetarily influenced just as much as any company can be. Why else would you act like that? Gatekeeping? I don't understand it at all.

yeah ... that's the problem :( so many people who don't actively use steam (and by "actively" i mean "a fair bit", not that they don't use it at all) do think that's true ... when it's really not ... all those screenshots and articles floating around are cherrypicked examples from an ocean of completely normal stuff

ah well

(also - if maybe we could talk less about era ... this isn't era after all ... or even a thread about era, lol ... there's just no point in sitting here and complaining about other forums ... we're here to talk about games ... and in this thread specifically to talk about EGS, no? :))

Not exactly the same, but I had a kind of similar reaction.

Until around late 2016 to mid 2017, after having been a very active user, I had sworn off Steam thinking there was too much crap. Around that time though I realized that while yes, Steam is filled with a lot of shit, the alternative to not paying attention to Steam/PC gaming is missing out on a ton of stuff. By not paying attention to Steam for around two to three years, I had missed out on tons of stuff. Because guess what? Most outlets and personalities aren't dedicated to talking about the hidden gems and lesser known gems.

So between being stuck with only AAA coverage, and having to wage through some occasional garbage, the choice is obvious.

yeah, no doubt about that ... there are SO MANY incredible indie games ... and most of them go completely unnoticed by pretty much everyone (magazines, websites, streamers, youtubers etc.) ... well unless they get a console port (or become INCREDIBLY successful) - then everyone is suddenly interested :p

Man, today has been one of hell of a day for really opinionated people regarding the EGS here and over at another place. Perhaps those particular folks should take a clue and be like what most accuse Valve of: be silent.

It took me a while to catch on the fact that PC Gamer has been actually sponsored by EGS and what the implications are. Welp, can't read them any less than I already did.

Also, what the fuck is wrong with the internet. The reactions I'm seeing in every thread is "lol can't wait for PC gamers to be pissed". I feel like I'm surrounded by psychopaths all of a sudden.

Yeah, I'm flipping through a few Discovery Queues right now, and I dunno. There's some serious crapola in here, but there's also some very interesting stuff. Like this:

It's got a full anime style OP:

And it looks like a rad AF shmup:

Maybe I actually missed a huge amount of hype for this game (seems unlikely since it came out today, only has two reviews and barely any comments/interaction on the dev posts), but this shit looks cool as hell and I've never heard of it. Giving it a Google, it does look like there has been a single PC Gamer and RPS article about it, but if you miss those, how else could you find this stuff other than trawling through the store yourself?

For those fearing the announced indies presenting at the PC Gamer show were all turning EGS exclusive (something that PC Gamer's annoucement did seem to imply, with that "powered by EGS" crap), here's a message from the VP of one of the companies that will be featured:

yeah, i'll never understand this ... with every new bit of "epic" news i see lots of people on twitter saying stuff like "oh boy, now the steam fanboys will be really pissed ... good!" ... and i'm like - why is this making you so happy? what is wrong with you?!

you have no idea how glad i am that at least some devs still seem to have a spine ...

It makes me smile when I think about that denying EGS exclusivity has become a good PR move.
it can only mean that it actually works ... or at least they think it does, and will bring them more sales if they make that statement

same as with lootboxes before where "we don't have lootboxes" became a marketing point :p

The same way fomo works, but in reverse. Appeal to the fear by saying they've got your back you can't miss out because it's on x,y,z. It may not actually translate to sales, but it soothes that feeling enough to be PR worthy

I'd play some Terraria to celebrate, but I don't understand that game.

Looks like the same indies that saved the industry from caving in on itself under the weight of AAA gaming are going to save the industry again from EGS.

not all of them .... cough*Team Meat*cough
Not a fan of Edmund McMillen. If that's EGS exclusive, I shall not mourn.

There are other indies that went to EGS. Industries of Titan feels like it's been on my wishlist forever, for example. Not all of them will stay loyal; as always, vote with dollars (or pounds or whatever the currency may be).

I had to see this for myself and it's like you said. Peculiar. Wonder what's up with that.
They probably don't care enough to bring it back in a timely fashion. Signing an exclusivity deal with Ubisoft was 100% about screwing over Steam. I bet the games have sold fuck all on EGS.

Yeah pretty much, the uplay activation is broken. You don't buy Ubisoft games on Epic, all you're doing is buying an activation on uplay. You download on uplay and most importantly for Ubisoft, all microtransactions are 100% theirs. I really think they were always intending to leave steam with their GAAS games and found a fool in Sweeney to mitigate the risk.

The Ubisoft Business department after learning that Epic is giving them money for selling Divison 2 and Anno 1800 quasi exclusively on Uplay.

Seriously, why would you buy over the EGS, when Uplay has better prices and more features. I can't believe I'm saying this, but Uplay isn't as bad as the EGS. It at least has friendlists, cloudsaves, a chat, a storefront, fast downloads, it handles processing fees, it has discounts for long-term european costumers. It's not the best thing ever, but it has the bare minimum.

Do you blame them? They've made out like bandits here.

The fact that Epic is willing to do this has me worried, however. Even if EGS fails catastrophically, you know they're just gonna try and burn everything to the ground as they sink. This is as much about Sweeney's ego as it is anything else; he wishes Epic had the foresight and, quite frankly, influence of major hits like Half-Life 2 and Counter-Strike to build something like Steam back in the day.

What's really funny about the whole pull Ubisoft games from Steam to hurt them is that if Epic had even done a modicum of research they would have found EA pulling all their games didn't affect Steam one bit. You'd have figured at least Mr. Steam Spy would have known it wasn't worth it.

Ubisoft basically had no risk involved with the EGS stuff. The people who REALLY want their games will get them on uPlay, and their ridiculous moneyhats probably got them covered from the 'no Steam no buy' folks.

And the misinformed sods that get them on EGS, 88% cut baby.

Ubisoft?

A bit, offering and advertising the games on Steam and then pulling out isn't nice.
But to be fair: I always expected them to pull out from steam at one point in time, just not in such a way.
Personally, I started buying Ubi games on Uplay quiet some time ago, but I also buy from GoG as often as possible because I like supporting DRM free gaming, I buy from Humble Bundle, I buy from origins, from Battle.net. I'm not against other store fronts.
I think there is this strong misconception that people avoiding and criticizing EGS only want steam to exist. That's not true.

Epic?

Yes, they are idiots. They've proven that they are unnecessary.

In fairness, if Origin hadn't made Origin Exclusive titles, even fewer people would be using Origin than already are.
Origin also gave away a ton of games to try and establish a userbase. And EA are still consistently under performing in terms of consoles : PC sales for their titles, compared to their peers (unless you choose to believe that PC gamers just inherently don't like EA games, which... doesn't seem right, just at face value).

The only thing actually propping Origin up at the moment is EA Access, or whatever its called.

To change tack slightly, I was reading up about the recent antitrust quandary Apple might find itself in, and it got me thinking:

What if this goes all the way, and closed platforms like consoles are forced to open up?

You can bet as soon as they can develop it, EGS would be there on the consoles, buying up exclusives for their garbage store. And imagine if, let's say Sony, decided that only games bought through their store could enjoy certain platform features like trophies, cloud saves and be purchased with PS Store wallet credit, arguing that the 30% cut they take on games sold through their store helps to pay for these features.

It'd be funny to see the console warring bad actors who shit up discussion about EGS all over the web losing their shit because console and service level features are disabled for EGS's exclusives. Their tune would probably change quite quickly, and I'd probably have a helluva a lot of sympathy for them after I stopped laughing.

I know obviously this is hypothetical and might not play out this way (there's talk Apple could settle before any precedent is set by simply letting developers sell App Store keys in other stores in a similar way that Steam does), but I think people used to a level of quality and features would probably be pretty pissed off if someone barged onto their preferred platform and started wrecking it for no reason other than they feel they're entitled to insert themselves between you and purchasing certain games.

I agree, all I'm trying to say is EA games aren't on Steam and no one batted an eye. Ubisoft being pulled isn't going to damage Steam either. Hell, Ubisoft even just pushed Starlink on Steam. I guess Timmy boy didn't want to pay for that one.

Ubisoft said they have a multi-game deal with Epic. Let's wait and see what they'll do when Epic stops paying for exclusivity.
