The gaming press has always been more or less a PR machine. It's crazy that yet, it's seen as conspiracy to imply that private companies receiving compensation/gifts/sponsorship for promoting other companies stuff could be biased.

This makes me SO fucking angry. Forums and social media are a huge way people exchange real information about popular media, and they have a massive influence on how people perceive it all (laugh about "influencers" all you want -- there's a reason they get paid to do it). I returned to PC gaming after a very long absence around 2016, and before that, I genuinely thought Steam was a cesspool of porny anime, asset flips, and shovelware, and I wanted to avoid using it. It literally wasn't until I spent some time reading the PC community threads on Gaf that I realized how wrong that was. Era has a huge number of users, and the site is actively shutting down reasonable discussion about some world changing shifts in a massive gaming platform. It's completely bizarre. It's going to influence peoples' opinions. It makes me wonder if they're not monetarily influenced just as much as any company can be. Why else would you act like that? Gatekeeping? I don't understand it at all.

Giving it a Google, it does look like there has been a single PC Gamer and RPS article about it, but if you miss those, how else could you find this stuff other than trawling through the store yourself?

There are other indies that went to EGS. Industries of Titan feels like it's been on my wishlist forever, for example. Not all of them will stay loyal; as always, vote with dollars (or pounds or whatever the currency may be).

They probably don't care enough to bring it back in a timely fashion. Signing an exclusivity deal with Ubisoft was 100% about screwing over Steam. I bet the games have sold fuck all on EGS.

Yeah pretty much, the uplay activation is broken. You don't buy Ubisoft games on Epic, all you're doing is buying an activation on uplay. You download on uplay and most importantly for Ubisoft, all microtransactions are 100% theirs. I really think they were always intending to leave steam with their GAAS games and found a fool in Sweeney to mitigate the risk.

Seriously, why would you buy over the EGS, when Uplay has better prices and more features. I can't believe I'm saying this, but Uplay isn't as bad as the EGS. It at least has friendlists, cloudsaves, a chat, a storefront, fast downloads, it handles processing fees, it has discounts for long-term european costumers. It's not the best thing ever, but it has the bare minimum.

The fact that Epic is willing to do this has me worried, however. Even if EGS fails catastrophically, you know they're just gonna try and burn everything to the ground as they sink. This is as much about Sweeney's ego as it is anything else; he wishes Epic had the foresight and, quite frankly, influence of major hits like Half-Life 2 and Counter-Strike to build something like Steam back in the day.

A bit, offering and advertising the games on Steam and then pulling out isn't nice.
But to be fair: I always expected them to pull out from steam at one point in time, just not in such a way.
Personally, I started buying Ubi games on Uplay quiet some time ago, but I also buy from GoG as often as possible because I like supporting DRM free gaming, I buy from Humble Bundle, I buy from origins, from Battle.net. I'm not against other store fronts.
I think there is this strong misconception that people avoiding and criticizing EGS only want steam to exist. That's not true.

Origin also gave away a ton of games to try and establish a userbase. And EA are still consistently under performing in terms of consoles : PC sales for their titles, compared to their peers (unless you choose to believe that PC gamers just inherently don't like EA games, which... doesn't seem right, just at face value).

The only thing actually propping Origin up at the moment is EA Access, or whatever its called.

To change tack slightly, I was reading up about the recent antitrust quandary Apple might find itself in, and it got me thinking:

What if this goes all the way, and closed platforms like consoles are forced to open up?

You can bet as soon as they can develop it, EGS would be there on the consoles, buying up exclusives for their garbage store. And imagine if, let's say Sony, decided that only games bought through their store could enjoy certain platform features like trophies, cloud saves and be purchased with PS Store wallet credit, arguing that the 30% cut they take on games sold through their store helps to pay for these features.

It'd be funny to see the console warring bad actors who shit up discussion about EGS all over the web losing their shit because console and service level features are disabled for EGS's exclusives. Their tune would probably change quite quickly, and I'd probably have a helluva a lot of sympathy for them after I stopped laughing.

I know obviously this is hypothetical and might not play out this way (there's talk Apple could settle before any precedent is set by simply letting developers sell App Store keys in other stores in a similar way that Steam does), but I think people used to a level of quality and features would probably be pretty pissed off if someone barged onto their preferred platform and started wrecking it for no reason other than they feel they're entitled to insert themselves between you and purchasing certain games.

Ubisoft said they have a multi-game deal with Epic. Let's wait and see what they'll do when Epic stops paying for exclusivity.
