I'm liking the interactive recommender.

A lot of times, I had to browse through a lot of pages of games with RPG tags to find something that I might've missed. Now this is super useful.

Now that She Sees Red launched...

... and Corpse Killer is coming out soon...

... it would be awesome to have a thread dedicated to FMV games (something pretty, with images, a banner, ...).
Is anyone willing to do one?

I'm willing to "bribe" the person who does it with a free copy of She Sees Red (I have an extra copy). ;)
Will that person have to call other forums monopolies to obtain this FMV hat?

The interactive recommender is not wrong

It's all my wishlist already.... And Tecmo never puts this shit on sale. :face-with-cold-sweat:

RPG, anime and yuri games. Steam knows me well. Almost too well.

Either that or the machines really wants us to play Punch Line.

I'd say it's spot-on. I already own the Infinity Engine RPGs and Anachronox elsewhere.
I think your recommender is broken,

Mmh...

Micro-Trailers ? Not that interested, some presentations are nice, I like the 2x2 grid.
Recommendations ? At first glance it was a catastrophe but after playing with the sliders it's an interesting function. I need the same thing for my library, Steam !
Popular games show ? Another very interesting idea, the best one maybe. But Steam needs to work on its IQ. The base windows is too small and fullscreen takes the usual Steam IQ hit. They need something in-between like Youtube or surely a dozen other video sites. Hmm, come to think of it, Youporn doesn't have that, shame.

Edit - Popular games show
Machine learning is all well and good, and typical Steam "oh noes, no human intervention", but two issues.
  • Some 2x2 grid have the same video or at a slight delay
  • Some games have absolutely no gameplay, not representative of anything
  • A little too short a time for each game, but in order to allot more time they have to make several shows like they allude to, I don't have all day
  • AI has a debatable grasp on genres

Yeah the interactive anime recommender seems to work fine.

But I'm not sure which games it takes into account. The ones I played recently? The ones I played the most?
What about games that are short, but I loved more than some games I played for 50+ hours?
How does Steam know that? Do they simply prioritize hours played/times started/etc?

Edit: It says "playtime history". So I guess, for example, Touhou Luna Nights wouldn't factor into the system much because I only played it for like 5 hours, even though I loved it. Hm.

Edit edit: Oh wait, it looks like they thought of that.

https://steamcommunity.com/groups/SteamLabs/discussions/3/1643168364649515214/#c1643168364649540766
The way we use play time is a bit more sophisticated than simply comparing raw hours played, for exactly the reason you describe. We also take into account the playtime distributions of individual games. A short single-player game that you played all the way through and loved will still be weighted highly even if you have more total hours in, say, a multiplayer game you play regularly over a long period. Our model learns how to interpret all this information to suggest games it thinks you're most likely to enjoy playing.

I have a really strange list of recommendations. Surprised there isnt any JRPG's when I filter by RPG tag considering how many of them I own.

I think they also need to factor the unlocked achievements while scanning our games, so that the hours spent from idling games (for cards/whatever) won't affect the algorithm.

The only real problem I have with this tool is that you can't mark games as "having already played", since I have a lot of these on GOG or DRM-free on Humble.
It seems pretty spot on otherwise.

yeah ... and i wish i could hide wishlisted games as well

also - i'd like for the "time" slider to be a range ... so i can, for example, only see games from 10 years ago ... not just "from the last 10 years"

AI has a debatable grasp on genres
People have a debatable grasp on genres. It's pulling from tags that have been submitted by the developer or users.
The adventure tag is completely useless. It's not a theme, people. It's a genre!

Been asking for this for ages, but it should be possible to combine tags when searching or blacklisting.

Unfortunately, I have been extremely busy, working 6-7 days a week since April, and I've been working without a single day of break for a month, 14-18 hours a day, so I'm completely burned out, and without the patience do commit to it, especially since English isn't my main language. :)

I see that fokkusu was awesome enough to create one. :highfiveblob:
As promised, I'm sending you a key to She Sees Red your way.

That sounds absolutely brutal o_O

I hope the job is worth all this effort, but even then, make sure you take a breather every now and then :D
Yeah, it's brutal alright. :)

By now, I'm completely numb.
It's been ages since I slept decently, I gained weight (from all the fast food, and skipped meals in recent months), I don't remember the last time where I watched a movie, played a game, or did something I enjoy. Posting occasionally here has been, in some cases, almost the full extent of human interaction I had in some days, in recent weeks.
It's tough. And, it won't stop when this finally ends on Monday. It takes me a while to get back to normal, I'll probably spend at least a couple of months, if not more, where I have no desire or will to do anything. :(

It doesn't help that, tired and nervous as I am, last Saturday I got a call saying someone beat up my mother at her work place.
I went completely berserk.

As for being worth it, I can tell you that no, it definitely isn't worth it. Without any doubt, this has a very negative effect on my well being, especially mentally, and no job is worth that. But unfortunately I can't simply quit. I have bills to pay, a loan that runs 3 more years, and I can't afford to lose this job.

OK, I'll shut up now, and stop venting. :grinning-face-with-smiling-eyes:

The Recommender keeps recommending me a ton of SHMUPS and that's a genre I've basically haven't played. It also seems to take permanently removed games into consideration, meaning that my top games include several F2P clicker games that I banished from my profile after getting too addicted. Because of that, my recommendations also include a number of clicker games.

It would be nice with a blacklist or weighting scheme for the games used for recommendations and it would also be nice with some sort of explanation for why a game was recommended.

However, it did recommend me a bunch of visual novels, puzzle games, and weird games that seem right up my alley, many of which were already on my wishlist, so overall I classify it as a success.

Thank you for sharing that. After everything it seems that maybe not even brutal can fully encompass it all. That's a lot to be put on one person and I don't know how to respond. Saying sorry just feels like it's not enough. :pensive-face:

I can say, and this might be a strange response, that I'm actually inspired. The perseverance you've shown, that you've been here almost every day interacting with all of us and all while keeping a positive attitude, keeping others motivated by suggesting threads or games to check out.. it's honestly tremendous. You're a good person and this forum is better for having you.

I hope that you're able to take full advantage of the rest you so rightfully deserve. :cat-heart-blob:

Excellent ideas! Make sure you send your feedback to Valve!

That's brutal (and even illegal in my country)! No one should be working that much. I really hope this is only temporary, you should try to find another job asap. Which is of course easier said than done if you don't even have time to get a decent night of sleep. I hope you find a solution soon!

Ok, so, here's my opinion about the 3 new features that are being tested with the public.

First the 6 second trailers, this feature right here is the lest exciting for me as for now because I see this as a complement to other features or a redesign of the storefront like the one we saw this summer sale when the thumbnails were this 6 seconds long animations, it was dynamic and it was really nice because you could see a little preview of the game even before entering the page, however as a separate tool it doesn't make much sense to me, maybe I'm not thinking about it properly but it has potential, I know the twitter bot had a lot of followers and great results. Want to see how this evolves.

The Automatic Recommender is so far working really well for me, recommendations are on point, I have, in fact, discovered at least 3 games that looked really nice and I didn't know about them (and you know I watch the steamdb daily and don't miss anything + lashman helping on this wonderful task, so, yeah, imagine the general public :sweaty-blob:) so I'm happy with this feature, HOWEVER, I think it's important to note some things.
  1. This recommender should not show games that are already wishlisted, instead it should change those for more unknown results to complete the number of games recommended.
  2. There's a wishlist button, there should also be an ignore one too and once you click it, same as wishlisted, change the result so there's always 30 games but constantly changing, I mean, if those list are generated based on AI that analyses our steam behavior (time played, games we play, etc...) then it must have a lot of lists already made, having a dynamic system would make this more attractive.
  3. Needs to be placed somewhere more accesible, I know this is just an experimental testing but this has a lot of potential, right now it's hidden and once it releases officially it must not be like this.
Again, so far the results have been on point and that's really important.

The Automated show, the feature I was waiting the most, this format was needed, really needed and possibilities are endless, first of all, right now they are experimenting with it so they can get the most optimal length, the best quality for the video and the best format for all the information inside this videos so it's pretty safe to assume that this will be the feature that will change the most and by far the one I have most feedback to share because I'm really into video making so I'm a bit biased hehe.

  1. Video length should NOT be 24 minutes, it needs to be shorter and way more direct, if you are going to make a 24 format video you really need to make sure you can keep the attention all that time and that means long clips for some games, a narrator, dynamic music, shorter clips for other games, heck, a Nintendo Direct format, it's the one that makes more sense for this length because it keeps the attention of the spectators as long as it can.
  2. Visually it must have an Identity, right now I can't associate this videos to anyone because there's no color identity, there's no definitive Steam logo, as a brand Valve has this identity, the red Valve and now the Orange Valve letters, but Steam is, sometimes purple? sometimes blue? sometimes black and white? this must change RIGHT NOW, you now have a feature to market hundreds of games monthly that are coming out in your service, if people can't identify you with simple concepts like colors, sounds or forms, then you are failing in a very important point, you have one of the most known logos of the industry, I don't think Valve will have problems making this identity if they think about it..
  3. Different kinds of videos with themes like "the most exciting JRPGS of April", "A great Indie wave coming to refresh the summer", etc... imagine whatever you want and make it true, not only the best selling monthly games or THE NEEDED MONTHLY RELEASES ONE, also thematic videos from time to time would be amazing and even would help to highlight games that somehow get buried sometimes, no partners needed, just let the system do the job, make some guidelines for devs so they know how to market their games in order to place them better.
  4. Social media, this videos MUST be shared through Twitter, Facebook, YT channel and even mail, this format is already amazing and is way more direct than a text wall for most of the people, if they place this, let's say, once/2 weeks on their twitter, I bet people will go more often to steam to check things out, just watch how Playstation/Xbox/Nintendo profiles work, always pics and always videos, it's ESSENTIAL.
  5. Different versions for this videos (+7, +13, +18, etc...) so you can target different audiences at the same time with the same tool, just like the Nintendo directs, making this process automatic shouldn't be hard as Steam already has this information based on ESRB, PEGI, etc... and it's really important because, let's say, a kid is looking for games (because now kids use the computer more often) and a video pops up, there's an option for that kid to see a generated version for all the publics, or if you are an adult and want to see, IDK, a Yakuza 86 trailer on there, you have the option of the +18 video. HECK, LIKE NINTENDO DOES WITH THE DIRECTS haha
And that's pretty much it for now, I have some ideas too, but this is what I can remember at this very moment. What do you think about the features? because for me this Steam Lab initiative is simply amazing and makes this whole thing more interactive and that's awesome.

Thank you for your well wishes, blindrhythm Li Kao Mivey Ge0force BO7AMMOOD lashman . :photoblobheart:

I just had the awesome news that my troubles won't end on the 15th as expected, but on the 17th (since a client still hasn't made available some of the information and documentation needed). :notlikethisblob:

That's brutal (and even illegal in my country)! No one should be working that much. I really hope this is only temporary, you should try to find another job asap.
Oh, it's totally illegal alright. The maximum hours I should be working is 40 hours a week.

It isn't like this throughout the year. Things are calm(ish).
But, basically, it's something like this: every year, during a certain period of around 5 months, everything that can go wrong goes wrong (everything from computer failure, people failing to report to work, suicide attempts, and other things), and I'm left with trying to salvage the situation (pretty much by myself, since I'm only guy here who knows how to fulfil these obligations).

I could say "screw it", and basically the company would fold, and I would be out of a job (which I can't really afford to at the moment), or I can do what I have been doing: single-handedly doing the work of several people, correcting everyone's errors, and send all end of the year fiscal obligations for 100+ companies by myself.

This has been lasting for... 12 years.

One time, I worked for 23 hours and a half, non-stop.

Yeah, as soon as I can I need to change my life a bit. It really isn't enough to just switch jobs, I'm getting so burned out, I need a change of scenario.
I'm planning to move to a small town as soon as I can afford to do so. :)

OK, I promise I will shut up about this now.

Now don't take this the wrong way, I obviously don't know your personal situation, not even what country you're in and it might sound like victim blaming. But there comes a time, let's say 12 years, when it kinda is on you too to a certain extent. If someone higher up can just bank on that one guy killing himself slowly why do anything to improve the situation? Are your superiors putting in that much work, do they know what's going on, do their customers? If they are servicing that many other companies, why not hire more people? Their whole business model can't just rest on you not quitting, as someone who works in a consulting and accountant firm I'm legit sweating here. I mean even ignoring your company, those 100+ are at risk too, this is shady to illegal on more levels than you working insane hours. And there must've been opportunities to jump ship or to force changes over the past couple of years. Like straight up telling a couple of clients that, sorry, I'm doing this alone and can't make the deadline(s). Well or asking them if they're hiring. :smart-thinking-blob:

Just a month after Jason Kingsley told MCV he would need a "bloody good reason" to do an Epic Store exclusive, Rebellion Developments signed just such a deal for Zombie Army 4.
I guess the discussion at Rebellion went something like this

I definitely could have done something during the first years, but I honestly handled things a lot better then, despite all the heavy work, and I got to earn a few extra €.
After a few years, things start to take a toll, but by then I have a house loan to pay, and I can't simply quit, and stop paying it.

The company did hire extra staff recently, so here's hoping things turn around.
Either way, as soon as I can afford to do so, I need a drastic change. Like I mentioned above, it's no longer just about the job any more, I need to slow down. I'm turning 39 in a few days, I have 25/26 years or so left until I reach retirement age, and if I continue at this pace, I doubt I'll be around much longer.

But I'll stop with this, I don't want to further drag the thread with my professional laments. :grinning-face-with-smiling-eyes:

To be honest it sounds like you're having a burn-out already. Perhaps you could talk about it with your doctor, it may be a good idea to take it easy for a few weeks or even months.

I can't stress enough how important it is to find the right person to help you before things are getting out of hand.

Oh and please keep talking about it if you feel like doing so. That's what friends are for, both online and offline 😊
