Time to start lowering the prices of games.

Compare Steam today to Steam in 2014...and I can probably make an argument that every indie game releasing nowadays is 5-10$ more expensive than it should be.

$15 is the new 10
20 the new 15
30 the new 20
40 the new 30

Valve should strongly recommend every dev a follow a Hollow Knight rule before they release their game.

Basically...is your indie game bigger or better than Hollow Knight? If not then you shouldn't be pricing it higher than 15$

Doesn't help that so many bundles, subscriptions and other deals just make it too difficult to support devs at a high rate.

Not surprised. I have been buying less and less games at launch or even within months of launch.

I had to check and see if I even bought games that released this year, and after checking, the only 2019 releases i bought so far this year are :

Tales of Vesperia Definitive edition
RE2 remake
Yakuza Kiwami 2

So only three 2019 releases and they are all "old games" too, which i find funny. Maybe i felt more confident buying them since they are a known quantity and they are not full price ( RE2 was from a graphics card bundle code that I bought off someone for cheap or i wouldn't have bought it at the regular launch price )

There's plenty of games I'm interested in, but with high prices and a backlog, I'm in no rush to buy at launch and can wait. Plus most games tend to get patched and it ends up being a better experience if you wait anyway.

Honestly I thought Hollow Knight was too cheap for what it was.
I don't think pricing will fix anything though. I think ultimately it comes down to a "simple" matter of supply and demand - there's just so much more supply of great games than people can keep up with.

Making a game is easier and cheaper than ever. Publishing a game is easier than ever.
There's over a hundred interesting games coming out each month. While old game just don't magically vanish or get worse, but instead get cheaper.

I've bought just over a hundred games this year and only 4 of them were newly released (Yakuza Kiwami 1 & 2, Touhou Luna Nights, Devil May Cry 5). The only other new game I'm planning to get day 1 this year is Digimon.
Next year, I'll probably still not buy significantly more new games and instead buy some of the games I've missed out on this year, or the years before. (And 1 year after release many games are usually already 50-75% off).

At the same time the industry realized their love for GAAS games which are specifically designed to keep people from buying and playing other stuff and instead just play this one game hundreds of hours while continuously spending money, and at the end of the day everyone only has a limited time for entertainment.

And now add Game Pass and other renting services into the mix and people have another avenue of getting tons of games for cheap instead of buying them.

I don't really know if there's even a way to "fix" this though..

Sadly, it seems indie developers need a lot of high budget marketing if they want their game to be huge sellers (or at least strong word of mouth). I try to buy games where it looks and plays great and I want it to succeed, but there's so much to go through that it's impossible to keep up. Even AAA games seems to have this problem where they don't sell enough unless they monetize the hell out of it. There was this interesting GDC video about how an indie developer tried to survive without making a big success, but I feel things have changed significantly from three years ago that I don't feel his advises applies today.

Yeah I recall reading a couple of comments on twitter mentioning controller issues. Apparently the developer released a patch that fixes any problem with Xbox controllers, but I'm not sure whether they're working on better support for Dual Shock too or not. Try mentioning it directly to the developer either on twitter or on Steam forums, he seems to be quick to respond there.
The XBONE controller has a different issue, the right trigger for run doesn't work at all! I actually ended up using a combo of the XBONE controller and then keyboard for any puzzle that required running. I didn't try my steam controller as I've lost it again, I need to attach a bell to it or something.

It's probably a bit short for the price, $20 for 7 chapters, compared to similar products but the graphics, atmosphere and puzzles are masterful.

Even if I had the money to buy stuff at launch (I don't) I almost always got screwed over with my money I had just waited a month at the very least and I could save half of the purchase price.

What's the point of instantly buying it if it's a single player game? It's not going to ruin it by waiting

Rage 2 went from 70+$ for their deluxe edition to like 30$ in less than 2 months, Doom 2016 did the same thing and those are tripleA games.

Multiplayer games are the only ones that really require a second look for doing a day one purchase because the userbase tanks shortly after launch.

I have stopped buying most games at launch, even those I really want. I have so many other games I want to play across different devices and I only have a few hours a day that can be spendt on gaming and that gaming time is also competing with my time that I use to watch movies/tv shows/netflix/HBO and soon Disney+.

Reggie has also stated that the Switch is also competing with streaming services, not just other gaming devices.

And like I always say, there are still a massive amount of Genres that have droughts of good or ANY games.

And I will never buy games that can be finished in under 10 hours anymore. Too pricey.

I'd much rather buy a 3-4 hour experience that's all meat than a 10-15 hour one that loses all steam 1/4th in (looking at you Hellblade, even though I beat you in ~6 hours, it felt like at least a dozen)

If it is just 3-4 hours, I will youtube it. I am playing games because of the gameplay, repeated gameplay. I have hundreds of hours into Paradox 4x games, X3, Sengoku Rance (someone make a fucking SFW clone of that game! The gameplay could be 1:1 just add enough modes and stories into it.) Civilization games, XCOM, Rimworld, Stardew, Factorio, and of course thousands of hours into Minecraft.

No kidding, too many games coming out every week (and I'm excluding shovelwares), so not everyone can stand out and make a profit, no matter the quality of the game...

It's kinda sad, and seems like there's no one to blame : days are still 24h and we as players can't buy and play everything.
I really don't get why this is still so hard to understand for a lot of developers. This is ECON 101 stuff. Now if sales on Steam were on the decline across the board then I'd see where they're coming from, but they're not. On the contrary, we hear of many games being the best ever sellers in a specific series, or even in general for some publishers, such as Monster Hunter World, despite the delayed Steam launch.

Even if we limit the discussion to indies only, which is what he's getting at, I'm pretty certain plenty of them achieved great success recently, just not... all of them, sad as that may be. It's just a natural result of limited time and money for purchasers, and exponentially increasing competition between developers :shrugblob:

I was talking about narrative experiences (and not in the Paradox 'your goat marries the Pope's bastard love child' way).
But yeah, I get you.

The thing is, many customers find the narrative games to pricey. And good and great ones are costing the developer too much, so that he/she can't price it lower.

That sounds terrible! I hope it didn't stop you from enjoying the game! I actually played it today with a wireless Xbox One controller (With the dongle) and didn't encounter this issue. Maybe they patched it recently?

And yeah, if length is important for you then it's probably a tad on the shorter side. Personally I've had my eyes on it for a very long time, and normally I would've waited for some sort of a discount before buying it (Backlog and all), but that blog statement the developer posted was such a breath of fresh air amidst this depressing constant EGS propaganda that I just figured, fuck it, I can afford the game now, it's right up my alley, it looks great, and the developer certainly earned my trust and patronage. No regrets :thumbsupblob:

I'm the opposite, I don't really want to spend hundreds of hours in the same game. I like complete narrative experiences, whether they're a short 2 hour RPGMaker game or an 80 hour RPG epic (though those need to damn well justify that length), I just need games to have an "end" :p

Though I admit the short games are the ones I essentially acquire via bundles in passing (with some exceptions). :/

I was using mine wired, saves on batteries! It chews them like crazy.

So, games are given away for free, constantly bundled, day one on gamepasses that are given away for peanuts or free, launch pricing is ambitious at times (see ther Telling Lies price difference, maybe PC gaming can't bear the launch price?) and most importantly there is glut of fantastic games launching. No wonder individual sales are down. Ain't competition a wonderful thing.
