Sounds like they just don't want people just waiting 12 months. In 12 months the game with dead and buried, forgotten by Epic at the bottom of a single store page, probably 100s of games deep or given away for free to drive traffic to other games. To not then sell it elsewhere the moment the deal runs out is the sort of business decision that would get you laughed out of any town. So they are either lying or dumber than a bag of hammers.

I don't really believe those developers about the lifetime exclusivity, but we'll see.
I think they're sincere about it right now, but if in a year or two their game is dead and they're not getting any new players through the doors (and new sales), I wouldn't be surprised to see them change their tune. 88% of $0 is still $0.

Oh look a dev throwing out the "competition" trope again. Then wailing on the 30% cut which under many circumstances isn't actually 30% and 30% is the damn industry standard. If valve had started it's service out with a 12% cut there would have been hell to pay there would have been accusations that valve were undercutting the market to gain a monopoly. So Valve set their cut at the INDUSTRIAL STANDARD 30% (the same cut retailers and other online (boxed goods) stores took)..

As for it being a ridiculous amount to take ... hm you know the evidence is starting to mount that you cannot run a viable digital store on a 12% cut. We have seen a store not only bereft of features but actually REMOVE features because they don't have the resources to develop the damn store. Not to mention that EGS pass on a lot of costs to the actual consumer which makes the 12% cut a load of shite. Oh and if you think Timmy Boy is gonna keep that cut at 12% then ya a fucking moron. As soon as Timmy thinks he can get away with it that 12% will be going up and I bet it goes a lot higher than 30% if they manage to kill steam off.

I know I am speaking to the choir here but I am really getting sick of these developers lying and making up horseshit to hide their sheer and utter greed.. You went with EGS cos ya greedy cunts and don't give a shit about the customers that buy and play your games.

I mean I understand why most companies take the guaranteed money (2K less so...) as their goal is to make money and they have employees to feed and whatnot, I wouldnt call it "greed" per say, but it is funny the hoops they go through to try to explain themselves. You dont need to make up excuses to explain yourselves, just say "EGS paid us a lot of money so we took it". That is what the Satisfactory guys said and I respect them for it.

Personally I would say a dev taking a kickback from Epic shows me they have very little faith in their own product to actual sell and make any money from it. So I have to wonder why they are even in the business at all if they can only make money thanks to the benevolent Timmy. But what we have to remember about every dev that is taking Tims money is that they are slowly making things worse for developers that follow them and slowly weakening and damaging the PC market for future developers. So whatever the reason you take the kickback it makes you sellfish because you are talking personal short term gain over the long term health of the entire industry.

Now if a developer comes out with "hey guys look we really didn't want to do this but due to financial pressures we have had to seek funding from Epic to complete our game" then I would kinda be ok with that. But to wrap your shit up like some crusade to fix the PC market and herald a new era of fucking the customer yeah you can shove it where the sun doesn't shine. When I see Devs start talking about "competition" and "wah wah 30%" all I instantly think "ohhhhh ya greedy cunts then".

At best, we'll get the game on Steam in a few years, released at full-price, and then the devs will use the poor sales on Steam of their old game as an avenue to bitch and moan about Valve.

Wow, I'm surprised.

Guessing a lot of crunch went into this single feature for this one title.
2k probably didn't like the bad PR about no preload and forced Epics hand, 48 hours preload is laughable, if anything goes wrong they can always go back to say that software development is hard.

Pitchford is an ass, but I actually wouldn't be surprised if he was the one who made a huge stink about it and forced their hand. I can kind of see him going off on some unhinged rampage when he heard they weren't going to have preload, considering a lot for Gearbox is riding on this game.

Airborne Kingdom was a day one to me. I love that kind of thing. But, you know. Yarrr.

Perhaps they'd let me buy directly from the developer? Where no storefront gets any cut at all? Man, if only there was a store that would let developers generate a key, but not take any cut... nah wouldn't happen.

I can live with that. I don't mind waiting. If they said instead that they're delaying till 2021, I'd just shrug and not worry about it.
that's pretty much what they're doing, lol :p

and yeah - i don't believe them it's permanently exclusive ... not for one second :p

they can huff and puff all they want ... but when they run out of Tim's money and time comes when they'll want people to actually buy their game - they'll change their tune

Yep. I'll wait for Tim to get done playing it by himself.

I was looking at Solasta: Crown of the Magister's Kickstarter page and had a good chuckle when I read the faq:

It's funny to see the backlash starting to also come from the people Epic's supposedly saving. I know this is a marketing tactic to please the crowd but it's entertaining nonetheless.
It also shows that the crowd is indeed anti-EGS. It means that the message developers have received is that their audience is against exclusivity. This is a great win in the face of press outlet after press outlet running constant damage control.

As I pointed once elsewhere: it's interesting how the two narratives of "It's only a minuscule minority who cares" and "Users are sending 20K+ death threats to developers in the 24h since the announcement" keep crashing against each other in these gaming press reports.

Probably because they don't want to get harassment and death threat from hyper toxic computer cowboy steam drones that weaponized charity and /r/pcgaming subscribers.

Anyone received their fangamer email yet to request the Shenmue III refund?
I'm afraid of ending up missing it because of the barely good enough two weeks of claiming the refund.

Mid-September.

I hope every PC backer gets a refund, just to send a message to YsNet that they done fucked up, and in bigger ways than they anticipated.

I've been in the Shenmue fan community for ages, and it was always rather pleasant. There were a few jackasses, and one of them took over the Shenmue Dojo sadly, but on the most part the community were very passionate. Sometimes over passionate to a fault, but you could see their love of the series and their excitement over Shenmue III, no matter how rough it looked.

Then the Epic deal came along and it didn't just create a new fissure, but it also exasperated previously exisiting ones. I had to just block or unfollow the entire community on all social media because it had become so toxic (mostly on the pro-lickspittle side - the anti-EGS reaction was more interested in just getting their refund) to the point that Shenmue 4 is now going to be very hard to get off the ground thanks to all the negativity. I almost want to watch them try and crowdfund it to see how badly it fails.

And while the divide isn't entirely about Epic, I have no doubt that Epic was the straw that broke the camel's back, and now the community is at each other's throats constantly. It's a horrible fandom to be in right now.

I was always a big fan of the series, one that has spent significant amounts of money since the game launched on the Dreamcast to purchase materials related to the series (rare Japanese demos, a VHS tape for Japanese stores that included rare game footage of the game (including things that were changed for the final game), different versions of the games, the Japanese DVD release of Shenmue: The Movie, soundtracks, ...).
I dropped several hundred $ on the Shenmue III kickstarter.
Heck, I even dropped a decent amount of $ to fund a fan documentary on the series.

Now, reading some of the comments on Kickstarter, or several forums or communities related to the game, I'm not a "true fan" of the series.
Otherwise, I wouldn't dare criticize Yu Suzuki, the developers, or the publisher. Because this sequel is a long-time coming, I'm supposed to be grateful that I'm lied to, and I'm not getting what I was promised, no matter what.

Sorry, but no game, not even from a series I consider a personal favourite, is worth more than my pride, and self-esteem.
I was supposed to get all exclusive in-game content at launch, I'm not getting it (unless I also pre-order certain editions on the EGS). I was supposed to get a Steam key, I'm not getting it (yeah, that offer of getting a key a year later is a complete joke; after paying what I paid, I'm not going to be grateful that I would be allowed access to the things I was supposed to get... 1 year later!). I was supposed to get a physical copy of the game, with the files in a disc, I'm not getting it (they are now offering a blank disc that has nothing but the EGS launcher in it!).

It's regretful that people are fanatical to the point of thinking that they aren't entitled to anything, and should just take whatever they get, no matter the circumstances. And, it's particularly regretful that other Shenmue fans, especially those who backed the game, don't have the slightest empathy for fellow fans/backers that were treated as fully disposable, and whose rewards won't be honoured. It's between fellow gamers, who dropped their hard-earned money on the game, and a corporation. Yet, not surprisingly, people prefer to support the side of the corporation, just because many aren't directly affected.

I loved playing Shenmue. I loved playing Shenmue II. I spend years and years hoping for some sort of continuation to the story. Now, I couldn't care less about the upcoming sequel.
I just want my money back. I just regret, deeply, that I can't also refund my backing of the fan documentary. Not because of the people behind the campaign, but because I no longer feel any connection with the series, and its fan-base.

I can empathise with your feelings and i want you to remember that anything a random idiot will tell you can not change what you are to the things that you like. There are some naive people that cross the line between liking something and attaching their beings to it. Ignore them because it is an insult to your intelligence and a waste of your valuable time.

Also, remember that rational thinking and principles are always above any toy even if you like this toy very, very much.
And, finaly, never forget that what happens with this game is not your fault, noone's fault and do not feel bad because the Yu persom, the Tim person and the heads of Deep Silver are greedy sons of bitches.

Wait for it when it will come discounted to Steam/GOG.

I was a big Shenmue fan, but let’s not delude ourselves. 3 looks shit. Visually, it lacks any of the character of the first two, instead opting for the Unity Asset Store Flip aesthetic.

The system requirements are so high that it’s obvious to anyone with a brain that it’s coming in hot.

Animations are dire. Just, really garbo.

Gameplay looks vaguely interesting, but seems superficially Shenmue rather than having the depth of the originals.

At this point I’m expecting fans to just be all around disappointed with how this pans out.

If I were Epic I’d be embarrassed to have this game showcasing UE4 because it’s gonna be a fucking mess.

So saw this today on Kotaku (and yes the Media continues to paint Valve as the baddie). If you remember Metro Exodus ........ anyone remember that ? Anyhoo Epic literally stepped in at the 11th hour and made it exclusive to their shit store which oddly enough upset people, strange that. Anyway you will also remember that Valve were horrible and nasty and put out a damning statement calling the practice ...... unfair (those monsters)..

It seems that it had unintended effects. This is what Steams Business Developer said :-

“I don’t think that was our intent to upset people,” Blue said. “It wasn’t the intent of the message. It was more about the timing. The game was about to launch, and then it was [exclusive to the Epic store]. So that was the only goal of that. What came out of that was not what we expected. It wasn’t meant to be this lightning rod.”
You can read more here at fox ne....... erm sorry Kotaku

Meanwhile over at Good Guy Tims place he continues to incite, troll, abuse and insult anyone that doesn't consider him the embodiment of Jesus H Christ of PC gaming. Oddly enough Kotaku and the other media remain silent about all the fuel that HE and HIS company are pouring on the fire.

And by most accounts it's a pretty meh game too, holding 75 on OpenCritic.

I mean, 75 is not terrible, but considering Steam gets a game that usually reviews in the 80s on a regular basis, it's kinda disappointing.

I did not know Falcon Age was out, however. Being a VR game, I bet that one sold really well on EGS. You know, the store that doesn't even have a way to launch VR games.

Well i bought Falcon Age, played it for around 40 minutes and filled out a refund request. (<- why is this still a manual process, tim?)
The game is just not fun to control with kb+mouse. Too many keys to press to do shit. Maybe it is more fun in VR?
Apart from the birb the graphics are unpleasent to look at. I also thought that you have to raise the birb but no, this is done in three/four short
play sequences. After that CAPTURE THAT FACTORY/REFINERY. What? The story is bad and badly told.
