Why don't more outlets review Disco Elysium.

Does gaming press generally refuse to review games if they're not given a free copy?
I've got a different theory than the ones shared so far:

The gaming press largely isn't equipped to handle a game with higher quality writing and a heavier statement on politics, and even if the writers are, their audiences largely don't give a shit anyways.

Hmm, yeah. I don't want to go on the game journalists are mediocre terrain, because it's a slippery slope (and it's fucking true) but they are reviewers, not critics.

There's also the fact that CRPGs, especially the ones based almost entirely on dialogue, are very niche and don't get you clicks.
No clicks, no money.
Which is also why any AAA will get its review, even when they can just copy/paste the one from last year's version. People will still want to know if the assets used in the last 17 games in the franchise are set in Bolivia or Mordor this time.

All the talk of gaming news made me realize I don't know if anyone has mentioned Washington Posts' incredibly questionably named gaming division, Launcher, which went official last week. They do actually have a review of Disco Elysium up. I'm cautiously hopeful that Launcher (still a terrible name, how the hell are people supposed to find it outside of WP) will be actual games journalism that we really need with the broad issues in this hobby and industry now.

Waiting to see if they post anything ever about the Epic / Steam / Storefront conflict but it might be a bit late in the day and early in the war for that.

I don't understand why Cohh isn't playing it yet. He was responsible for like 95% of the viewership for Kingmakler.
I think it has to do with him playing a lot of VNs in recent time. he probably would’ve played it if it was fully voiced. But he would’ve done most of the heavy lifting here again and read the lines himself. He will probably play it later down the line.

Basically anime ruining yet another thing.

I will say this if even the press is not interested in talking about your game, don't blame Steam for not showing your game to more people (I would imagine there is a connection somehow)

Joking aside, the issue is that there are just too many games, the gaming press mainly focus on the AAA stuff (well most of it, I have doubts they talked much about Valves no games, but even Valve didn't talk a lot about them). You do after all have dedicated sites to Nintendo and PlayStation and stuff like that. You only have maybe less than 10 really big and well known game publications. I would imagine that they don't have a lot of staff to keep up with all of these game releases.

Now talking about reviews, I have no idea how reviews are made but I would imagine that most of the press don't play these games until the very end since they have limited time to work on the reviews.

One issue that some may have with reviews is that they are inconsistent (maybe having a lot of games releases has to do with this), since you may have reviewer A review War the game, and reviewer B review Farm Farm. But then you decide to have reviewer B review War The Game The Sequel, since reviewer A is far to busy reviewing Alice's Amazing Adventure by Soytendo (everyone's favorite Korean developer and yes it's an MMO).

So you have to many games, not enough reviewers and in the end you end up with games that don't get noticed.

Based off of what some of you have said I'm going to assume that Jason has only just heard about the Disco game rather recently (did other people at Kotaku know about the game/mention it at least?) Despite people already knowing about the game. Hell the Travis Strikes Back game had a t-shirt in the game for the Disco game, so even Nintendo specialty sites have mentioned the Disco game.

I would imagine that clicks also play a role and if you can't make articles that get readers than you will be let go, and from the looks of this letting people go is what a lot of news places are doing now.

I think I mentioned this before already but from what I have seen in the past when Luna Nights came out and had sold over 100k copies on Steam, Gemastu was one of the few sites that reported that, other sites didn't even seem to write a review for the game despite it having overwhelming positive reviews and being well liked in general.

I think there were more gaming sites in Japan that were covering the west than western sites.

I'd imagine being an indie dev is both very easy and very hard. It's easy because now a days anyone can be an indie dev but it's hard because you may not be able to make a living off of it.

Also we may eventually get to the point where some of these sites are just shut down because of loss of interest from readers.

These past few weeks have been a revelation for me. I've always been a gamepad over mouse and keyboard kind of guy since forever, but I really appreciate this piece of tech now because it enables me to game while having a baby. I even setup a gamepad config for Disco Elysium so that I can play with a gamepad, and it works. Thanks to the Steam controller support, too!

This is me every evening nowadays, but holding a gamepad instead.

By the way what are the launch bonus items for Ryza? I'm not sure if I'm going to pre-order the game in the end (too many expenses)

Because if the way that KT does DLC I think I might just buy the game (redeem the DLC) and then just refund it and buy it at a later day. Since it seems the DLC that KT does it not included with the game?

Because I am such an idiot. I didn't think this game would that scary. Note that I have never played a horror game before
Right before I woke up today I had a nightmare :( But it was me unlocking an achievement in the game :D
I could have told you that DreadOut is really scar! It gets "better" once you're used to it, but especially the beginning is intense, especially if you're aren't that resistant to horror, like me. I remember playing the game in bursts of a few minutes a time at the beginning, because I couldn't take the atmosphere for long :sweaty-blob:

This whole thing can be said in a very simple way: Indies don't generate clicks, PC discussion if it's not fabricated drama doesn't generate clicks as most of the readers of the mainstream outlets are console-focused players and if your game is a PC-only indie product, forget about being highlighted most of the time, there are still some place where there's a person or a teman that focuses on this kind of products but not even close as how big as Kotaku or Polygon are. why do you think they mostly shifted into opinion generated content? cause' it drives discussion and discussion drives clicks.

EDIT:
Oh, BTW, too much for those who always love to pretend they are indie defenders when they mostly ignore the vast majority of the scene and only focuses on the big names.

I hate Monday.

Not because it's the start of the week where I have to work until the following weekend. It's because everyone else is still on Sunday. Steam is still having their weekend deals and other stuff, websites are still not publishing anything, people are still asleep, Discord is a graveyard, nothing is happening at all.

What am I gonna do here in the office?

To buy or not to buy Sniper Elite V2's DLC at 80% discount.
I own several of the Sniper Elite games. The original Sniper Elite (bought for €2 back in 2010), Sniper Elite V2 (freebie), and Sniper Elite 3 (bought during some sale a year or so ago).

The original really shows it's age, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone anymore. V2 was a bit weird, since it was a remake of 1, but felt quite a bit more linear, since the original actually had quite large maps to roam around. V2 felt more limited in scope.
Sniper Elite 3 marks their foray into much larger maps, but I still can't shake the feeling that the games have pretty much shown you all they have to offer after playing though one level.

Sneak around, snipe someone, relocate, repeat.
It sounds awesome, but it gets.... boring?

It's been a bit since it was announced but does anyone know if Langrisser 1+2 remake is gonna come with the option to use older art instead?

Literally the deciding factor in whether I purchase on Switch Vs. PC. Cuz you know damn well someone on PC will mod the old art in lol but on Switch you'd just be stuck...

Urushihara Art > whatever modern shit they're using now. :p

Gematsu said:
First-print copies of Langrisser I & II will include a download code for “Classic Mode,” which lets users play each game with its original illustrations and background music. A newly added heroine character will also have artwork drawn by original artist Satoshi Urushihara for use in Classic Mode.

"Baldy, Beardy Tough Man, Gun-Fetish Simulator X69" will always win.

I think i'll pick up Disco later this year when i have some time to play it properly. Torment is one of the best games i've read so i'm looking forward to trying a spiritual successor.

Okay done with ReCore, I planned to 100% it but one of the achievements is glitched so alas no need to continue. I really enjoyed it. There is a lot of frustrating design decisions but it really scratched my "open world collectathon" itch and it is one of the not many in existence 3D metroidvanias. But for $1/month it was definitely worth it! Now to find another game to play.

Which is the best Arkham game and do I need to play them all in order? I played a bit of city and asylum back in the day but I forget most of it.

I finished Alien Isolation. What a good game. The look and sound of it is very true to the first films. I liked it a lot.

I did cheat and disabled the alien. I get that sneaking around is the whole point of the game but i just got fed up of all the hiding and having to re-do sections. It took me 10ish hours on easy with my cheat so i doubt i would have played it to the end if i hadn't. Glad ive done it. I wonder if they will ever do another one.

I played Arkham Knight earlier this year and it is pretty decent. Still looks fantastic which provides bonus points.

Never played Origins, but the rest I would rank in order of release, with the caveat that all of them are worth a play if you enjoy the gameplay.

Is that game still alive? I honestly have no idea, saw it getting streamed for a while but that completely dropped off. Could still be a massive hit for all I know.
