Man, when you're an adult gamer time is a relentless foe, especially if you're into RPGs. Finding time in the day for gaming is like trying to fit a square into a round hole.
Its part, "yeah I have shit to do" but I've also found that its "my life is better rounded and I have OTHER shit that I WANT to do". Like I gotta be out in nature at least once a week, whether it's just a park or a full on forest. Eats up game time lol. Same thing with the gym, which is bi weekly to tr weekly. So.... couple of hours is really all any of us can hope for, unless they have a vacation day. Plus, I don't even have kids and yet I find my nephews will usually eat up most of a sunday afternoon lol. Kids.....

TFW no other hobbies so I have like 3+ hours to play a day while still doing all my important shit.

Not sure if I'm blessed or cursed. Probably both. Maybe more cursed than blessed.. I should probably pick up drawing again. Draw some anime tiddies.

But I would at least like to entertain myself :confounded-face:
This is depressing because it's not the answer, I realize that.

Well in any case, Luigi is a Nintendo product, pretty sure it will remain at 45+ until the heat death of the universe.
I am not saying that you should not buy any game at all. You can still have plenty of entertainment with what you buy. The thing is it looks to me that your are often trying to go after several games simultaneously. I don't believe that you would have more entertainment with more games, because you can only play one game at once.

We all have this tendency for impulse purchases (and fear of missing out), and that is how we end up with a huge backlog. However, if budget is tight, it sounds better to settle for one new game per month. I cannot tell about the Nintendo games (I don't have any console), but if they provide good amount of content, then maybe Luigi (plus your backlog) is enough to keep you entertained for a few weeks without purchasing another game? Or whatever will appear in the Humble Monthly next week ; it already includes Spyro and Crash, which are extremely good value. With the Monthly formula, the only issue is that you blindly buy, so you get a good deal, but not necessarily the best entertainment for your money. In this case, group buys are amazing, you can often get that one game which looked interesting to you for 1€. Just make sure that you don't pay fees with your Paypal.

For instance, in my case, Disco Elysium is the biggest video-game purchase of the year (by far), and that should be good enough until the release of The Legend of Bum-bo in a month. I can imagine unlocking the Monthly bundle for December, but that is it. I would be surprised if I purchased any other videogame before 2020. So, if everything works as planned, that is 40€ (already paid) + $15 (planned) + $12 (planned) for the rest of 2019, and that is already a ton of money (~70€) to spend for video-games for 3 months. Actually, I like to keep track of what I spend money for, so that would be, over the course of 3 months, half of my spendings for video-games in 2019.

I suggest that you check the playtime for some of the games which you bought day one. In my case, that is how I realized that I had the tendency to over-pay for my entertainment, and I managed to progressively cut down on my spendings a lot afterwards, going from a monthly average of ~40€ (including ~12€ for the Humble Monthly) to ~15€ (no Monthly in 2018, only the one with Spyro in 2019, the rest of the Humble Monthly games were partially acquired with Group Buys). I don't buy Humble Monthly bundles these days, but if I did, the rule of thumb would be not to purchase any other game during that month.

It's odd, Ian Bogost has written some great stuff but i find myself disagreeing with him more and more over the last few years.
To be honest most of his output is very academic aimed so i can see where he's coming from but articles in popular press does make him seem a little out of place.

I had heard that as good as it is Goose Game is a bit of a chore to play though so he's not that wrong i suppose.
I wanted to dislike this article, but I really couldn't, and I'm a bit surprised by the negative reactions to it. He's not saying GAMES BAD or anything, and the point that games can feel like "work" is so relatable. I think about the open world games trend and how yet another unimaginative open world fetch quest/item collection chore list became such a groaner. Games have such huge potential for unique and transformative experiences, simply because we have to interact with them and the possibilities are literally endless. But there seem to be such few really good ideas or immersive designs that I often do feel like I'm doing chores instead of getting into that awesome flow state. It's why I'm so picky about how I spend what little gaming time I have.

I've also spent considerable time wondering why I like Animal Crossing so much, or why people like Minecraft so much. Aren't sandbox games nothing but "work" and "chores"? It's interesting to examine why some games are so engaging and some are so bland. There's no doubt monetization and mobile/AAA game design have influenced this.

It's the publisher's wet-dream for the future, better get used to it. More and more of these GAAS nuggets will go for it.

It doesn't bode well for the official "Fallout 5" whenever that gets released...

On the other hand, we just got Outer Worlds so the spirit of fallout is strong. I'll take that over waiting for Beth to stop being greedy "aaS" chasers.

To follow up on that no time for gaming issue, here are the release dates for my most anticipated games of next year:

TLOU2 - February 21st
FFVIIR - March 3rd
Persona 5 Royal - March
Cyberpunk - April 16th

I mean, seriously?!

So usually I can't even afford one game at full price but I'm already saving money to see if I can somehow afford 2 of these suckers. I'd like to get Cyberpunk on PC but there's no way my rig can handle it so I'll scratch it for now. My brother says he will buy FFVII and since he has way more time to play than I do he'll be done with it in a couple of weeks so I can borrow it. I'll get TLOU2 and P5R, maybe I'll even finish the former before the latter is released, assuming it hits toward the end of the month (Atlus will want to stay clear of FFVII right?).

I've been toiling away at Trails from Zero and DoS for several months now, I hope I can beat them in November. Also started The Surge 2 recently since I won it in a giveaway. After that I want to play Mutant Year Zero and Trails of Azure but there's no way I'll be done with those by february.

This weekend I actually had an unusual amount of time to play. In the end I realized that this incredible amount of time I was blessed with was hardly enough to even make a dent in these games, they are so damn big. Fucking hell, no wonder I need 6 month to beat some of these monstrosities like The Witcher 3, DOS2 and Persona 5.

I am so grateful for Turbo modes or being able to speed up games with cheat engine, it's such a godsend. When I played Berseria I shaved off at least 10 hours by increasing the running speed (the default is so slow). Now imagine how much time you save in a Trails game where you're also speeding up the battles which represent a huge chunk of the game. And the game even becomes more enjoyable in the process because in the old games (Sky and Crossbell) the animations are painfully slow by default. This is incredibly valuable time which is saved while still getting the full experience.
Another example is Zodiac Age, since fights happen on the field with no transitions the game is incredibly fast at 4x times speed, it's amazing.

I have a baby and I can still play 2-3 hours a day. I guess I'm lucky.
It's actually easier when they're babies because they spend most of the time sleeping. It's after that that they start taking up more and more time. Now let me preface this by saying that I'm not complaining, my son is the reason I get out of bed.
As they get older not only do they demand your undivided attention during every waking hour because they want to play with you but there's homework, soccer practice, birthday parties, meetings at school, sunday school and whatever other activities they're engaged in.
This weekend my son has a soccer match on saturday morning, a birthday party in the afternoon, sunday school on sunday morning and I have to take him to a friend's house on sunday afternoon (which is in another town).

I grew up skipping high school to stay home and play Fallout 1 and 2 (and Planescape Torment and Deus Ex but it's not relevant here :p)

But they can release a Fallout 5, I won't touch it with a stick and a hazmat suit. Fallout 3, 4 and 76 were so shitty, now I only cry when I remember what it was and how much it hurts to hear people waiting for a new Bethesda version of this once magical title.

Fallout NV was good though, but hey, it was not Bethesda.

I have 2 kids right now (3 and 6 years old) and there's no way I can get any of my own gaming while they're awake. That just means I get any of my gaming time after they've gone to bed, and I can usually get around 2 hours. It helps that I don't really watch TV anymore.

Although there are the rougher nights like last night, when 2 hours after her bedtime my daughter is still getting out of bed and calling me into her room for reasons like she wasn't dreaming about the right cartoon character, or that she had found an old band-aid stuck behind her bed.

I HIGHLY doubt that FFVIIR and Cyberpunk are going to be released in those dates. I am slightly sceptical about TLOU2 as well. If those are delayed you problems will be solved 😜

Yeah, that's what I expect tbh. When my son get older, I probably only have a time for games in late evening after he's asleep. Me and my wife have made up our minds that we won't introduce games to him until he's old enough. That's why I'm trying to enjoy it while it still last. :pensive-face:

No way am I touching next gen consoles until 2023. Backlogs only grow longer, never shorter and for whatever reason the rest of this year through 2020 is crammed. At a time when I haven't even really gotten to half of the EXISTING games out this gen that I'd like to.

A note on P5R; I understand the hype if you loved every moment of Persona 5 but I can't see anyway P5R is less of a disaster regarding its time sink status.

Jkm23 Yeah, for all the grief Fallout 3/NV had i still really enjoyed them. I haven't touched Fallout 4 as i have no interest in "Base Building" and being interrupted to defend the base i didn't want. I'm a Wasteland Wandered ffs!

Fallout 76 was really enticing to me but i knew turning it into an almost MMO would not be what i wanted so i cancelled my pre-order. I'd still like to play the game but the more they add the less i'm likely to bite especially after watching some of the videos out there. I'd play F76 if it was SP or had an SP mode as I just want SP Fallout again but they can't milk whales with those so i can't see it happening. Unless... You PAY for a private server and stop anyone else joining.

Yeah, all that.

Disco Elysium walk speed was a bit of a bummer in tha last part of the game, but really, the maps are tiny and there's interesting stuff to read everywhere so it's not even remotely comparable in how bad it is compared to some JRPGs without fast movement options.

Li Kao if you're overcome with the "I want shiny new thing" feeling but no have no budget for it, might I suggest trying to "shop" in your library first?
I'm certain you have a lot of cool games you're not even aware of.
I've been using Steam library filters for digging through my library occasionally.
Once I sorted the list by User Ratings and gave the results a try, and I found some really great games I was not aware I ever acquired. Or perhaps just browsing with a few tags you're in the mood for selected will suffice :)

Another pretty decent bundle from Fanatical just popped up:

Damn that's a nice one. Gonna put on those nostalgia goggles and get it for Asterix and Obelix.
I really enjoyed Epistory, nice.

It became nicer once I got the Thought that allowed me to zoom out more, so I could double click further away and less frequently.

I would have liked a decent online game in this universe ! But Fallout 76 ? They had a whole year to do something to improve it, solve the biggest issues at least. They didn't. Now they're going full GaaS. So I don't expect anything from Bethesda.
