It seems like just the bare minimum most games on Steam do anyway, so that it's news when they don't actually do that, just ignore it like 99% of the games :shrugblob:

Updates to Free Demos on Steam
With thousands of playable demos launching on Steam every year, and millions of players trying them out (often as part of Steam Next Fest), we've noticed some trends in feedback from both developers and players about the process and functionality. We've put together an update based on that feedback.

As a reminder, you can always find great demos to play on the Steam demo hub.

Demos now behave better in the Steam library
We've made a few updates to how demos appear and behave within the Steam Library. Here are the key items:
  • You can add demos to your library without having to immediately install them. Just click on the new "add to library" button next to demos you may not be ready to install (while using the mobile app, for instance).
  • Demos can be installed even if you already own the full game. Primarily, this will make it easier for developers to test demos, but it will also help players more easily manage installing/uninstalling demos.
  • Demos can be explicitly removed from an account by right-clicking > manage > remove from account.
  • When a demo is uninstalled, it will automatically get removed from your library.

Demos can now have a separate store page

By default, free demos appear as a button on the full game's store page. But, developers have been asking for a way to enable a full store page to better describe the contents of the demo, add separate screenshots, upload a trailer, and specify supported features. So, that is now possible and you'll find that clicking on a demo sometimes loads a full demo store page while other times will take you to the full game's page with a button to install the demo.

Tight connection with the full game
Stand-alone demo store pages will automatically display both the demo install button as well as a widget linking back to the full game for players interested in wishlisting or purchasing the full game.

User reviews for demos
If developers have chosen to enable a store page for their demo, it will also be possible for players of the demo to post user reviews for the demo. These reviews and review score will appear on the demo store page just like reviews for any other free game on Steam. Note that if the developer has chosen to not have a separate store page for their demo, then user reviews will not be enabled for that demo.

Demos now appear more in the Steam store

Demos now behave more like free games and can appear in all the same sections and lists. For example, demos can now appear on the Steam homepage in charts such as the "New & Trending", on the "New on Steam" page, and on relevant tag and category pages. We've also made some changes to the thresholds for free products to appear in those sections to better balance them with paid products.

Of course you can always find great demos to play on the Steam demo hub.

Wishlist notifications when demos become available
We've now also made it so that when a demo becomes available for the first time for a game that you have on your Steam wishlist, or from a developer you follow, Steam can send you an email and mobile notification about that demo.

You can opt in or out of these emails by updating your email preferences.

Infrequently Asked Questions
Q. What is the deal with the Demo icon? Is that a plate? A vinyl record?
A. That classic icon, my friend, is from the days when demos were commonly distributed through the post office, contained in a bound package of game journalism printed on dead trees and imprinted on circular media known as Compact Discs.

Q. Some demos just appeared in my Steam library. How did those get there?
A. We've made some changes to visibility of demos in the Steam Library, which may effect demos that you played long ago. We've tried our best to clean up the demos that we expect you don't care about anymore, but we may have missed some. You can easily remove those by right-clicking them in your Steam library and selecting manage > remove from account.

Q. I love free demos. When is the next Steam Next Fest?
A. Check back on October 14th for the next weeklong Steam Next Fest, featuring hundreds of new free playable demos! You can sign up for a reminder by visiting the Next Fest page now: https://store.steampowered.com/sale/nextfest

This is actually incredibly helpful.

notifications for demos for wishlisted games sounds useful as someone that tends to wishlist anything that sounds interesting to me in showcases or whatever and then just forgets about most of them

I'm not sure I like the fact that demos now have their own store pages. I would find it better if it were already recognisable on the main page in the full release game tiles or in the respective lists when a demo is available. For example, by adding the words "Demo available" in a different colour. And on the game pages more space or a separated and highlighted area for information about the demo.

This really feels like a monkey paw event. Of all the big games that could've done it, it had to be this incoming trainwreck.
Yeah I think this is legit the first piece of good news I've seen of the game and it's not about the game itself.

Bioware and Bethesda are relics of the worst gen in gaming history (360/ps3 gen) and I wish we could leave them there. Everyone else soared past them years ago. Even ubisoft makes deeper "rpgs" than their best "rpgs" (ME2 and skyrim).

I'm still huffing on some hopium that The Veilguard will be a good game. Most of the marketing has been bad but a lot of the stuff they showed so far has been early game. And yea it looks very mid but the first 5-10 hours of Inquisition was very mid and boring too.

But once that game settled down it was solid all around. Even good in some places. Once you have your base and all characters there to talk to that is when it became good. And that is the same for all BioWare games I guess. Still Inquisition was nowhere near BioWare's best ofc but if Veilguard can be an 8 out of 10 in the end I will be happy. There is still a lot of good stories to tell in that world so the mid/late game has potential. We will see if they deliver.

Full Steam support is good news too. The EA app is trash anyways so why do they still bother. Just put all your resources into Steam going forward.

Did Steam literally resurrect demos? I haven't really paid attention to what other platforms are doing. The Steam Next Fest events have been great.

Actual RPG mechanics wise I'm not expecting anything from Veilguard. At best it will be a passable action RPG.
What I'm interested in is the writing, but even on that perspective what I'm hearing from this jus sounds so frustrating.
You have this great villain, Solas, who has actually a fair amount of depth to their villainy. Sure, they want to "destroy the world", but only because the current reality was created by his unwitting actions: he caused the downfall of his civilisation and trapped most of his people in the veil, basically forever damning them in some kind of purgatory. It's not at all clear what "undoing" this would mean, but it's clear it would literally rip apart the current reality and at the least kill every single being currently on this side of the veil.

Instead of focusing on Solas, early previews revealed that Solas is basically kicked in the but early on by some unknown other Elven gods and they continue his plan in his stead (from what I gather). So a well-defined character with a neat backstory gets replaced by a couple of literal faceless goons. Great job BioWare, you could have had some (figurative) balls and do something interesting with Solas, but nope, gotta "redeem" him or whatever nonsense motivated this change.

I rarely buy games at full price, but I'm happy to make an exception for games like Dungeons of Hinterberg. You can feel the huge amount of love the developers put in this game. ❤

I'm also playing Celeste on the Deck. It's a hard game but SO damn good! I can't count the times I wanted to stop after the current level, but just kept playing... 😁

Because of the hype for London, I'm tempted to play Fallout 4, but also very wary of getting a flaming pile of shit like Starfield.
Though I suppose Starfield has very distinct issues that shouldn't be there, like the boring space or boring planets.

And yeah, I didn't play New Vegas, not in its entirety anyways. But fuck me, this shit is ugly.

Important Message

Thank you for your feedback on “Earth Defense Forces 6”.

The EDF6 development team for Steam is reviewing and planning changes to the specification that requires sign in to Epic Games account, which has received the most feedback.

At this time, we are unable to provide specifics on how much time this will take, but we will continue to work on it as we address the feedback we have received.
Something something complaining works something something.

It's not fair. Why are developers bending the knee against these ungrateful bigot crybabies? Steam users deserve to be treated like this because of all the mean things they say. They should be thankful they can even play these games at all, just like me! This is why we need to break the Steam monopoly before Gaben buys it's 20th yatch while the poor janitor at Valve makes 3 million dollars a year. I don't want to be the only one getting fucked in the ass by big daddy corporation! Save me and my 500$ paperweight mr Sweeney!

The writing in the demo, while being a very small chunk obviously, looked to be the same standard bioware writing. There was a choice to go with varric's plan or not and if you don't he goes ahead with it anyway and all that happens is you lose a few happiness points with him. As usual with their games choices seem to be superficial at best The rest of the writing in the demo wasn't anything interesting either, typical shallow bioware wheel dialog.

Fallout London's release inspired me to reinstall OG F4 while I wait for the kinks to be ironed out during London's launch window.

I have a 300+ hr save file with a lvl 70 character and I still haven't completed all the DLC like Far Harbor, etc.

The interesting thing is that this will be the 3rd hardware build I've loaded this particular save onto. I remember back in the day pouring through guides on how to squeak more frames out of mid-tier 2014 PC hardware, dialing back graphics settings left, right & center to get a stable framerate.

This time out the Fallout 4 launcher did its standard hardware profile check and basically said, "Looks like you have a GTX 4090 onboard, let's just set everything to Ultra...BTW, you have the optional HD Texture Pack installed right?"

Firing up that old save on fresh new hardware was complete whiplash on the performance front. Damn Fallout 4 is still gorgeous as hell and that liquid smooth @ 120 fps is just dreamy. Bonus props to the in-game Mod menu remembering all the items I subscribed to from way back. Easy-peasy lemon squeezy.

Man it feels great to be back.

Hopefully this doesn't translate to getting entirely lost in The Commonwealth wastelands over the weekend!

I hope Valve takes note of the recent EDF debacle and starts working on cross-play for Steamworks. I can't blame developers for using EOS, as long as the only alternative is to write an online matchmaking component themselves.

It is already unhealthy how Epic has such a huge market share on game engines for AAA games. They shouldn't gain the same market share for online gaming either. Imagine the majority of online games becoming unplayable each time there's a popular Fortnite event...

The Steamworks package has an API for cross platform multiplayer - ISteamNetworkingSockets Interface (Steamworks Documentation)

I believe the reason it is not very popular is that Valve does not mandate the use of any specific Steamworks features for any game releasing on Steam (and I also believe this is a mistake to an extent). Epic on the other hand insists that any multiplayer game releasing on EGS and Steam must necessarily have cross play compatibility because they understand that not enough people buy games on EGS to support a healthy multiplayer ecosystem and if people started facing matchmaking problems specifically on EGS they would stop buying from there.

So basically Valve tells developers they are welcome to release games on Steam and use whatever Steamworks features they wish to, if any at all. Epic tells developers that to release on EGS they must implement crossplay with Steam users and oh, here's an API we made specifically to help you comply with this mandate.

Aside from that, I believe Epic has a very good reputation among the developer community. Probably because they're just more visible and in contact with all sizes of game devs, from big AAA publishers all the way down to the smallest indies with the Unreal Engine licensing and support business. Developers absolutely love that Tim Sweeney is fighting 'the good fight' on their behalf against the evil rent seeking corporations. Valve on the other hand is pretty insulated, just doing their own thing to improve Steam, and their reputation for poor customer and developer support from many years ago still persists (it was not undeserved at one time).

Specifically in the case of EDF6, I would imagine the developers and publishers probably didn't even know that there would be this much pushback on forcing Epic account logins to play multiplayer. I expect they'll now change it to the silent EOS implementation which still handles the matchmaking and stuff but it won't require logging in to an Epic account.

"which has received the most feedback" is a really fun way of putting it.

I've absolutely no idea how it compares to EOS featurewise, but it exists. Feels more like Valve could advertise it a bit more.

Fun Anecdotes for PC Hardware Nerds

I have an RTX 2070, a card that enjoys LARPing as a GPU capable of ray-tracing. There are only three games in RT history that I've been able to play with good performance.

Control
: The RT reflections were a really obvious improvement that looked super cool. Performance was still 60+FPS with DLSS, so I played the whole game with RT reflections. RT AO made it look like the game shadows were composed of countless tiny ants crawling around frantically so I turned that off. I believe what I was seeing is noise on account of the RT ray count being too low? I literally couldn't tell the difference when it came to the RT shadows and it killed performance so I didn't use that either (although I didn't understand what to look for at the time).

Metro Exodus: I couldn't believe how well this ran with ray-tracing on. These devs are wizards. I didn't end up playing through the game and my memory of it is quite hazy now, but I think I remember being really impressed.

Doom Eternal (base campaign)
: The reflections on the gun metal and windows looked cool, but I had no idea if anything else was happening. Performance was still like 100FPS. I had to turn it off for the DLC, because the game gets more crowded with enemies and frantic and thus performance suffered enough that the reduced mouse cursor response was noticeable and bugged me, although it was still around 60FPS.

Bonus: If I turn on Path Tracing in Cyberpunk, I get less than 4 frames per second and it's like I've vibrated myself into a parallel dimension where time and light work very differently. The rays my GPU produces are so far behind the game objects that it creates a extreme amount of temporal blur. It makes the 3D models look like I turned everything down to low, then further modded the game to go below its lowest presets.

You are talking about something different here then me. Writing to me is about the quality and artistry of the resulting writing. Whether words be good. What you are complaining about is the game not reacting in a satisfying way to a user choice and making them feel like they play a meaningful role. BioWare has long stopped being at the forefront of pushing what the RPG genre can do. Arguably, they stopped that stuff long, long ago when they decided to go for linear AAA stuff. From a purely commercial standpoint, it was an excellent choice. Mass Effect 2 is a shoddy RPG, but it's a really fun, very well written linear third person shooter with lite RPG aesthetics. Dragon Age Origins was strange leftover from old BioWare days, that somehow survived and was published under EA, and then got the modern BioWare treatment.
I understand all this, but nonetheless, BioWare managed to create an interesting setting and build upon interesting characters and lore in DA2 and Inquisition. I worry that 2024 BioWare can't even land the writing part anymore.
