love me some trickle-down economics ... because that absolutely 100% of the time works flawlessly

by which i mean - it NEVER fucking works ... not a single goddamn time has it EVER worked

Like Timmy gives a shit about the 30% anyways. Fucker just wants a piece of Valve's pie. It's just so disingenuous and it makes me question the intelligence level of 🥚 stans.

no, he doesn't want a piece of volvo's pie ... he wants epic to BE volvo ... as in: he wants to be the ONLY store on PC

he said as much himself

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprise if Cliffy leaving and the almost bomb of original Fortnite (that was in development hell too) spooked him to the point he looked over at Gabe and Valve rolling in the money with (appearance-wise) no game development and thought "looks like a sweet deal". I would bet money that if 🥚 is successful, Epic won't make another game, at least "tttrrripppplllleeeee a" quality.

they already aren't ... fortnite isn't even remotely AAA ... Paragon was, fortnite isn't ... in fact - it's actually not a very good game, believe it or not

Save The World was a COMPLETE flop .... and it's mechanically (building shit, shooting mechanics etc.) identical to the BR mode

fortnite's ONLY saving grace is BR (as in: the mechanics, not the mode) ... once people get sufficiently bored with that - fortnite is DONE

in fact - check out this video:

If ever he wasn't completely up his own ass on this whole EGS business, he's now clearly so all-in he's got a view of the world partially blocked by his own front teeth.
He's also spewing economic theories that only exist in econ1000 textbooks that exclude actual humans in their hypotheticals because the theories fall apart when you do.

... or he knows it's complete bullshit, but continues to lie to people because he knows so many will believe him ... because we live in capitalism and a surprising amount of people actually believe all those lies

Crazed Cuckoo Capitalist Tweets

My god, the intellectual dishonesty.

  • None of the EA, Ubisoft or other platforms are on the same scale as Steam because none of them ever set out to do that. They are first-party launchers by design, intended to get their owners the full amont of the sale. He has no right to use them as a proof of effectiveness regarding competing with Steam on features.
  • "Dedicated Steam Gamer". Take a shot.
  • "the strategy of exclusives [...] do work, as established by the major publisher storefronts and by the key Epic Games store releases compared to their former Steam revenue projections and their actual console sales.". This reads like a quarterly report covering its ass with absolutely no fact to back up his affirmation that the strategy works. Remember those metro sales number?
  • "The 30% store tax usually exceeds the entire profits of the developer who built the game that’s sold. This is a disastrous situation for developers and publishers alike". First, citation needed. Second, then why are studios still flourishing on those evil consoles environments? Y'know, who have only a 70% cut and no steam keys, no access to other storefronts or even the ability to distribute and sell directly? Darn, the situation is dire!
  • "the result will be a major wave of reinvestment in game development and a lowering of costs.". Reagan would be proud. Yes, it will all trickle down. Any day now, especially when the ones actually pocketing the change are in majority publishers like Annapurna, Deep Silver and Private Division. Sounds more to me like a B2B-friendly strategy.
  • "So I believe this approach passes the test of ultimately benefitting gamers after game storefronts have rebalanced and developers have reinvested more of their fruits of their labor into creation rather than taxation." It doesn't, since it assumes a will from publishers and studios to let that wealth trickle down. In the meantime, shitty launchers and barebones features become the new standard while smaller storefronts are pushed out of business, forcing players to use said shitty platforms and pay superior prices. Players win, clearly!
It's more of the same, you guys know it. I was just in the mood to take it apart today.

yup ... i don't really have anything more to add ... but you hit the nail on the head, absolutely

what is really sad, though, is that SO MANY people actually believe it (or want others to believe it) ... like i saw Adam Boyes retweet that thing saying it's a good thread

and of course i've already seen at least 2 articles about that

and in other news: The gamification of gaming has reached new levels of meta weirdness (points for you if you can tell what they're talking about before clicking the link)

I wonder how he'll be spinning when he sees the shitstorm that's about to happen in TV streaming with broadcasting corps pulling their shows for their own exclusive services.

You can almost imagine the PCGamer editors scrambling around looking for all the shitty hot takes that make non-Epic companies look bad. They'll be running with them for weeks.

Meanwhile: Epic forces all its staff to go on holiday at the same time. This is a good thing, rather than them instilling a culture where they encourage their staff to actually fucking book holidays without fear of reprisals from management. That said, this is a problem endemic in Silicon Valley and Valve does similar.

In judging whether a disruptive move like this is reasonable in gaming, I suggest considering two questions: Is the solution proportionate to the problem it addresses, and are gamers likely benefit from the end goal if it’s ultimately achieved?

We are living in a capitalistic market and it's the duty of stock companies is to maximize profit. Tim is right, he is trying his best to improve the situation of stock holders, soulless publishers that are sucking the life out of their employees, himself and his own overlord: Tencent.

And no: Gamers aren't going to benefit from this. Prices are increasing, the free key market around steam is being destroyed, they have less options, using more launchers is inconvenient but most importantly: The extra winnings will be eaten up in bonuses, stock investments and share holder money. It won't lead to extra investments or better work conditions. As already said in this thread: money doesn't flow downwards, unless necessary or forced.

You have to be an idiot to believe in what Tim is saying.
And now excuse me, I have to buy some games: It's steam summer sale after all.

I never thought a billionaire game developer would seem so fucking naive. Fucking hell. I mean the guy is so completely blind, for example they've completely poisoned the Kickstarter well as so many folks don't trust them or developers to not betray their trust later on. The Shenmue/Phoenix Point debacles have shown this. Brute force just won't work Tim, he talks about 'challenges' well good luck with the challenge of changing people's minds that you're not a complete tit.

For our potential customers' benefit, we're removing choice and forcing them to deal with our company. It's for their own good, even if it goes against their wishes.

Never mind the money we make in the process. #4TheDevs

Also, Reagan called. He said he's proud of Sweeney, and that money will trickle down aaaaaaany minute from now...

You can see it when you look at Epic. Wonder how much of Timmy's money is trickling down to his overworked, exploited employees...

It is baffling how contradictory his goals and his main strategy are.

Offering the same games as steam, while using your cashflow to subsidize those games would have been enough to demonstrate how much better a 12-88 cut is for gamers. Buy Metro Exodos on Steam for 59.99€, for 41.99€ on key seller sites or for 38.99€ on EGS and know that every penny goes directly to the publisher. Plus offer a free game every month for a year and the EGS would start gaining traction, even with less features.
In other words: Show and don't tell.
It would still be a lie, because he doesn't care about better working conditions or costumer benefits etc. But it would at least fit.
And honestly: I would have no problems with a strategy like that.

Instead it's a lot of meaningless bla bla while demonstrating how bad a world with EGS as a mayor player would be.
Tim isn't naive, he just tries to sell a nicely decorated package full of shit, while being an inapt marketing person. Making a bad decision is normal, most intelligent people are able to see reason and change stuff. Not Tim though, he is trapped in his own glory, a decision made by him must be good. No turning back, it's all in at that point.

The hypocracy has always been there in all his madcap actions and PR going back years. I love how he's setting up a walled garden whilst railing against other walled gardens. lol, jealous of being a little lttp eh? Tinfoil hat time but I wonder what their analysts or strategists have seen on the horizon that has lead to them pushing out EGS far too early?

Fortnite money won't last forever but it's still huge.
Unreal Engine must bring in a ton of revenue.
Then there's pappy Tencent who'll bank roll stuff so Tim doesn't have to use his own pocket-money.
I can't see how Epic are hurting for cash so badly that they have to rush out EGS in the state it's in with the attitude they have. It's curious to me.

I think they are terrified of investors fleeing the moment profits begin to dip. Once Fortnite's popularity dies off (and it's looking like it's beginning to flag), all Epic has to fall back on is Unreal Engine. And even that isn't as lucrative as it was last generation. Getting into the PC distribution marketplace is their Hail Mary, and if that fails, you better believe the investors are going to drop them like a hot potato.

They could always, you know gasp, eek!, faints develop more games. Imagine a game developer developing more than one game, let alone using IP they already own for it... What a world we live in.

I'm at the point where I don't feel like buying a new Jazz Jackrabbit or Jill of the Jungle from Epic anymore, even if it comes to Steam day one. That bridge is long burned, pissed on and nuked from orbit.

Hahaha fantastic!

But damn, I miss Leslie Nielsen

Btw, another Epic shilling article on PcGamesN, about Epic claiming that these exclusives will "ultimately benefit gamers". And once again, their conclusion is hilarious:

Sweeney’s suggestion that exclusives are working out seems to be met by reports from developers themselves. Earlier this year, Metro Exodus’ developer revealed that as an Epic exclusive, their game had sold more than double what the previous entry managed on Steam.

God damn journalists...

Edit: For some reason, I clicked on the bio of the journalist who wrote the nonsense above. Laugh with me:

Ali rejoices in being the youngest member of the editorial team, and takes pleasure in reminding his elders that some of their favourite games were released before he was even born. In keeping with this youthful demeanor, he plays a LOT of Fortnite, which is preventing him from finally finishing The Witcher 3.

Seems that Tim went from annoying to annoying and sad. I mean, EGS hasn't been directly mentioned by Valve once, has it? I can't help but think that those kinda of tweets is him trying to get some form of attention, even if just a 'yeah tim, we know you have a store now' from Gabe. Can't imagine what Tim will be doing in about two, three months if he doesn't get it by then.
