I don't understand why Lanning and Co keep getting shots at this. Did the original games and Munch's Odyssey build ups so much good-will (and cash) that they can basically lean into wasting it for 20 years and come out unscathed each time?

There are now 3 reviews a day and a half after the release.

I will say one good thing about EGS: their support of Geforce Now (GFN) is much better than Steam's.

For instance, Control (EGS) is supposed to start instantly on GFN, while the Steam version is extremely long to start (when it does).

Similarly, Shenmue III (EGS) starts instantly. Meanwhile, the Steam version is not listed on GFN.

There are plenty of other instances. Typically, weekly free games appear quite fast on GFN, e.g. after a day or two maximum.

It is pretty obvious that someone at Epic ensures good relations with Nvidia, and good support of EGS games, while there might be nobody at Valve appointed to inspect and ensure good quality of Steam-based games on GFN. It is a big deal to me: I would have had a better experience with Control EGS when I had the opportunity in Humble Choice.

Isn't it the publishers that have to give the green light for GFN support rather than the storefronts? At least as far as I can tell if they hadn't blocked NVIDIA we'd have probably been playing our full Steam catalogue on GFN just as it happens on say, Shadow or whatever, but pubs got pissy and wanted extra dough even though we've already bought the game we want to play on that service. Nvidia could have probably fought them and argued it's not really a streaming service like Stadia but just renting out hardware that instead of coming to our home is remote but wants good relations for GPU support and crippled GFN over it. And it's probably more on Nvidia's part to ensure games work just as well on the service as they do when you launch them locally and support all versions well too. What about quantity of games overall, how many on Steam are playable on GFN and how many on EGS? Totals, not %. Sucks if pubs have blocked most.

I don't have stats, but I would say that in terms of the total number of available games, Steam is better.

Hitman 3 has done gangbusters for IO Interactive, with CEO Hakan Abrak claiming this year's entry was 300% more commercially successful than previous entry Hitman 2.

We called Hitman 3 "IO's most creative and surprising assassination sim yet", and it seems like we weren't alone. In interview with GamesIndustry.biz (above), Abrak explained that Hitman 3 wasn't just the highest-rated critically of the series—it was also the most profitable, despite being the first game entirely self-published by the studio.

That's a welcome turn, considering the first game's failure to meet Square Enix' lofty expectations saw the publisher drop the franchise. In contrast, Hitman 3 made its money back within a week, even as—as Abrak explains in the video—the developer faced "challenges" in adapting to work under Covid 19.

Epic Games launched MetaHuman Creator this week. It's a videogame character creation tool, essentially, but it's free, it isn't followed by a 140-hour RPG, it runs in your browser (actually in the omnipresent "cloud"), and it can export ready-to-use character models for Unreal Engine projects. To try it, you have to sign up here, and it might take a little while to get your invite.

As I understand it, Steam prefers an all or nothing approach to support currencies which includes supporting local payment methods. This approach means there is a long on boarding process to bringing a regional pricing support online.

Personally, I feel this made more sense some time ago, but anymore they should just offer a base regional pricing option to convert local currency into USD. Plus, once they do add a currency and regional support, they could default to the base price if the price has not been updated by the publisher or developer. Now, it jut becomes unable to be purchased until someone updates to the regional value which is an awful solution.

Thanks, so that's how it works. More regional pricing/currency options could be great for publishers who actually care about regional pricing for customers.

From what I read, Steam is going to support more currencies soon. So the timing for the tweet was really good: it is the only time window during which their statement is true. Caveat: I have not checked the sources.

Correct. References to new supported currencies were found in Steam, but there is no time frame as to when they will be officially implemented (or if they ever wll).

too bad its still stuck in the overlay and inpossible to view outside of it
Overlay is better than Steam's though, which is interesting. I did not expect that. Shift+F3 and you get direct access to cheevos.

well the only usecases i have for overlays is stuff epic doesnt have :p ... so for me its a win by default , never was cared about cheevos

Its fascinating ... as usual with egs and its features its one or two great ideas/implementation hidden inside superhalfassed implementation (aka here the cheevos being only visible in overlay)

My use-case of the Steam overlay mostly consists of checking recent achievements, which is tiresome as you have to open the page of achievements if you want to check more than the most recent unlocked one. So Epic's take should be pretty useful to this regard.

Other than that, checking Steam guides in the overlay is great. And Epic should never have that. :face-with-open-mouth-and-cold-sweat:

Game developers are at the heart of bringing great games to our players, and we want them to find success on our platforms. That’s why today we’re announcing that we’re updating our Microsoft Store terms for PC game developers. As part of our commitment to empower every PC game creator to achieve more, starting on August 1 the developer share of Microsoft Store PC games sales net revenue will increase to 88%, from 70%. A clear, no-strings-attached revenue share means developers can bring more games to more players and find greater commercial success from doing so. You can read more about this new revenue share and our work with developers from CVP, Head of Game Creator Experience and Ecosystem Sarah Bond.

We empower developers to decide how to deliver their work based on their creative vision. Developing for PC was a priority for Microsoft Flight Simulator last year, using the help of Azure AI, machine learning, Azure Cognitive Services, and Bing Maps to bring the entire planet to life. . We’re also looking forward to releasing Age of Empires IV this fall, which modernizes the iconic RTS franchise for new and returning players with the first all-new title in the last 10 years. We’re building on our history in PC gaming with the addition of inXile entertainment, Obsidian and Bethesda to our development teams – bringing their world-class talent and heritage into the Xbox team.

We’re proud to empower all developers with the platform and services they need to execute their vision and provide exceptional experiences on PC. We introduced DirectX 12 Ultimate to both Xbox Series X|S and PC; coupled with the newly announced DirectX 12 Agility SDK, this enables incredible graphics experiences, like ray tracing, for an even larger set of PC gamers. We’re taking the work we did with our Auto HDR technology on Xbox to PC gamers, which is currently being tested with over 1,000 DirectX-based games. We’re also bringing DirectStorage technology on Xbox to PC, which means vastly reduced load times and more expansive and detailed virtual worlds.

Interesting stats.

53% of the freeloaders are lapsed Fortnite players, with the highest conversion rate (8.23%) to payers.
17% are active FN players or already using the EGS.
30% are new to Epic, with ~5% conversion rate to payers.

That sounds low, but it's also completely in a vacuum because we don't know what any storefront has in terms of 'free games redeemed ->paying customers' as far as I know.
Not a good sign though truth be told.

I wonder if the UT3 thing was scrapped. When looking at some other slides, it appears that report was drafted in March 2020. The dates jump around and start out in September 2020, then jump back to March 2020 and I think September 2019.

Edit: I also wonder if Conan Exiles on EGS was scrapped. I know that game was slated to be a free giveaway in 2020, but Epic announced that it was being delayed. Also Funcom announced it was coming to Game Pass (console and PC) a few days ago.

Only the first 3 were known, I believe.

It is one of the games which would benefit from cross-store play. So it might have been scrapped along with UT3.

In case this is helpful for someone else:

There is an option to install Epic Online Services in the settings of the EGS client.

If I click install, I am met with this error: EOS-ERR-1603.

The help page (in French) states that I should install an old .NET Framework (.NET Framework 3.5), which does not help: I have a more recent version of it.

The solution is on another webpage. Apparently, it is for people who used a non-default installation path.
Create the Epic Games folder in:
C:\Program Files (x86)
So you path will be C:\Program Files (x86)\Epic Games.

Then run the EpicOnlineServics.msi from
[MY INSTALL LOCATION]\Epic Games\Launcher\Portal\Extras\EOS\EpicOnlineServics.msi

Basically, one has to:
  1. manually create the default folder Epic Games in C:\Program Files (x86)\
  2. then manually run the installer EpicOnlineServics.msi found at the customized path.
