I'm still waiting on my CE from the Nintendo store to be delivered. I'm scared of how beaten up it might have been by the delivery service. My Zelda copy is delayed and it will be sent after the weekend. I always draw the short stick.

2 Collector's Editions and one regular edition have arrived at my home. One more Collector Edition has yet to arrive (several courier exceptions later, it's not even out for delivery anymore).
It’s almost time to see what’s next — PlayStation Showcase broadcasts live next Wednesday, May 24 at 1pm Pacific Time / 9pm British Time.
The show will run a bit over an hour, focusing on PS5 and PS VR2 games in development from top studios from around the world. Expect a glimpse at several new creations from PlayStation Studios, as well as spellbinding games from our third-party partners and indie creators.
Funny enough the stream they did last night kinda confirmed this. They said there were performance fixes coming and they would look into things like a motion blur toggle. No idea how long it'll take though. There won't be a day 1 update cos you'll have to wait a month or six for the fixes, not because they aren't needed xD
Unfortunately those are pretty good numbers. Like I didn't want the game to catastrophically bomb or anything but I didn't want it doing this well (so far) either and reaffirming all the bad decisions yoshi p and the team made.
Launch sales are down 40% from XV, but XV was a multiplatform release and there are less PS5 consoles on the market today than PS4 and Xbox One consoles when XV launched. Also XV being a terrible game likely did no favors to the Final Fantasy brand in general.
IIRC this is the biggest launch for a PS5 exclusive. God of War was crossgen. It sold less than FF7R but with the $10 higher price it probably made about the same revenue wise.

I saw all the particles effect during the gameplay trailer and knew this game isn't for me. Cool combat doesn't need window dressing. Now that the motion blur patch for FF16 is out I'm trying to play it and it still has horrendous visual clarity. The castle area that was featured in pre-release footage is still pitch black dark and all you can really see are the dozens of particle effects flying everywhere, I couldn't see myself getting hit half the time. The eikon battles are full of effects and camera shaking to the point where I can't tell what's going on. It's extremely hard to get any enjoyment out of this game.
I've never played a pikmin and have no interest in it but this FF deserves all the failure it gets. To me it's on the same level as other franchise abominations like Hitman Absolution, Thi4f and Splinter Cell Conviction.Famitsu Sales: 7/17/23 – 7/23/23 [Update]
Famitsu has published its estimated physical game software and hardware sales data for Japan for the week of July 17, 2023 to July 23, 2023.www.gematsu.com
Pikmin 4's first week in Japan outsold Final Fantasy XVI's LTD.
- [NSW] Pikmin 4 (Nintendo, 07/21/23) – 401,853 (New)
- [PS5] Final Fantasy XVI (Square Enix, 06/22/23) – 4,904 (401,376)
To be fair the Switch will soon be the best selling gaming device ever in Japan so its not surprising at all. Any half decent Nintendo game will outsell a big branded PS5 exclusive at this point.Famitsu Sales: 7/17/23 – 7/23/23 [Update]

Pikmin games are fun if you want a simplified RTS, but they're also stressful if you can't handle the cute critters dying.I've never played a pikmin and have no interest in it but this FF deserves all the failure it gets. That's true. The Switch's popularity gives nearly all their franchises a boost, but Final Fantasy used to be one of the powerhouse franchises in Japan and seeing it fall off so hard is kind of sad. I'm not as negative on it as Derrick01, but it is a very mixed game that ignores its roots to chase a mythical wider audience which may or may not exist. To be fair the Switch will soon be the best selling gaming device ever in Japan so its not surprising at all. Hopefully this Nintendo success motivates Sony to do something different next gen otherwise they will completely lose that region.
Would love to see some type of PS6 hybrid device. They need to be more creative instead of just chasing power trends.
If the route japan chooses is low spec handhelds that's on them, the rest of the world is much bigger and should not be punished for one region making (imo) a bad choice. Right now most leaks and reasonable guesses based on where handheld power is has switch 2 as being roughly on par with the steam deck, which itself is about on par with a base ps4. They're going to release a base ps4 in 2024...11 years after it launched. and we'll be stuck with it for 6+ years just like with switch 1. Nearly 20 years of ps4 level capability. That is absolutely brutal. To be fair the Switch will soon be the best selling gaming device ever in Japan so its not surprising at all. That's quite a narrow-minded assessment of why Switch is so popular in Japan. If the route japan chooses is low spec handhelds that's on them, the rest of the world is much bigger and should not be punished for one region making (imo) a bad choice. Nintendo can get away with this because what they do does not affect the industry at large. They operate on their own and most multiplat games don't even release on their systems because they're always so far behind. If sony were to do this it would completely upend the entire industry and affect how games are made for xbox and PC as well. It's not worth it just to save one region who chose to be behind the times.
Ok I was a bit harsh on japan there but regardless I maintain it would be an absolute disaster for the industry if sony were to make some ultra low power hybrid system. The entire industry as we know it would collapse and we'd effectively move the tech standard back 6-10 years. That's quite a narrow-minded assessment of why Switch is so popular in Japan.
You only need to look at the housing situation over there, fuelled by failures of the older generation and inflicted as punishment on the millennials and younger, to see that owning a games console in Japan costs more than just the console itself and the TV to hook it up to. Tokyo is one of the most expensive and densely-populated cities in the world. Much of urban Japan outside of Tokyo is only marginally better.
When cost of living is high and the population is dense, you find people tend to live in cupboards.
Some people live in apartments so small they can't even close the toilet door when taking a dump because their knees stick out. Things we take for granted like cooking, rooms with functions and having a TV are just not possible when your bedroom is your living room and your kitchen and your bathroom and your entrance.
Switch struck a chord not because of some failure of the Japanese games-buying public to embrace new hardware, but because they can't afford (or even get) a place big enough to put a full-sized console setup.
Other viable options are now cropping up. Steam Deck is looking good in Japan, and gaming laptops are getting more and more popular as people try to get a better experience than the Switch. But there's still only so much you can cram into a device with a battery and unless Japan's gerontocracy-caused social dysfunction suddenly gets fixed overnight, we're not going to see the primary game-buying public be in a position to own hardware like PS5 or full-sized gaming PC.
That said, you are right insofar as Sony won't be copying the Switch anytime soon. They've made an assessment that the Japanese market is not worth chasing at the expense of the rest of the world, but the reason the Japanese market is that way is complex, goes beyond the tastes of the gaming population, and affects all sorts of other things too (like the birthrate).
The power chase every gen feels like a giant waste to me. Reggie talked about the red ocean a while back when he worked at Nintendo and I think he was very right. The consoles becoming more powerful and cost more to make/sell. The big games people have been playing these last 3 or 4 years have been cross gen. Nothing is really using the power. The big AAAA next gen stuff cost so much money to make and takes so long to develop its not really worth it long term anymore imo. If the Switch 2 is powerful enough to be in the Deck range it will run/play a lot of the big games for the next 10 years. Lets be real there is nothing mindblowing this gen. We are all still mostly playing PS4 games. The fact that the Deck is able to now play PS5 exclusives means the Switch 2 will be in great shape. If the route japan chooses is low spec handhelds that's on them, the rest of the world is much bigger and should not be punished for one region making (imo) a bad choice.
