As a customer/player/gamer/consumer whatever you wanna call it, I don't care about the dev cut a store takes at all, I buy on the platform/store that serves my needs the best.
This is to get more devs onto the store, whether it works or not time will tell.

But as always, the cut fight is not something most people care about (and I'm not sure they should).

So with a 144hz gsync monitor all I have to do for Nier is to lock it to 60fps and nuke vsync in the nvidia control panel ?
Then profit ?

But why is there an option to set the fps of my monitor (separate from the fps of the game) ? Should I set it up or leave it alone ?
Disable vsync for the game in nvidia driver settings and use the driver or rtss or specialk or something else to lock the game to 60fps. If you have issues with stuttering, performance, controllers... specialk fixesa lot of those too.

It makes a lot of sense from Microsoft's perspective I think. In the long term they seem to be most interested in moving people from a model where they purchase individual games to a model where they pay a flat subscription fee.

I just hope they hurry up with the unpackaging of distributed games (and it's not just empty rhetoric), then I could actually consider Gamepass again.

My main hope is that their game client becomes more usable. It’s the main reason I avoid buying games there.

Microsoft Store had 15% for everything excluding games. They quoted 15% part, but conviently left out excluding games part.
Yes, I remember that. And IIRC it can go even lower if they're purchased through a link or something (which I assume won't apply to games).

This. MS can have all the dev focused features they want, the Xbox store/app is atrocious and not even Gamepass will get me to reinstall it as is. They fix that situation, and can guarantee my games will stay tied to my account this time around, i'll think about giving a shit about the pc xbox app again. Trust after GFWL games ended up not tied to the same MS account ive used for 20+ years, is low.

Until then, i'll go to stores that provide the features i as a customer want. And that's Gog first steam and its resellers second.

I expect Epic and Tim to be parading around in tweet pr heaven for a few more days

They couldn't pay me enough to even reinstall that abomination.
At least MS is still taking a stance that they want to release games on multiple platforms (and indirectly throwing shade towards the Epic Store). xD

We believe it’s important that players have a choice in where they purchase games and we want to make accessing content even easier.

Inquistor Ales new video is up

Thanks, I was going to post it here. I hope that compression artifacts are not very noticeable, YouTube can't fully process the video for 2 days already and I have no clue why. It's not the type of video that requires perfect video quality, but it's still kinda frustrating to deal with such strange YouTube issues. Hope you guys will enjoy this video!

Microsoft lowering their cut is amazing news. It will only put more pressure on Steam to compete on that front.
Like most I buy my games on Steam whenever possible but I'm open to buy more stuff in the Windows Store. I have zero loyalty to Steam.

The new cut is a nice move from MS. Once they improve their Windows store I might be tempted to buy a few things if it's convenient.

I wonder what this change will mean for Epic/Valve. Epic isn't the only storefront offering a 88/12 cut now and since exclusivity deals tend to have a negative reception I wonder if devs will be more tempted to look for a Game Pass deal instead. Would this change also pressure Valve into dropping their cut as well to something like 20% and their reduced cut to something like 12-15%?

Deep down, with this news I'm just hoping that devs will just start ignoring EGS for the Windows store. I mean it already offers more features than the EGS store.

I'm probably one of the few who has almost no problems with it, but I will never buy anything on the MS Store, just the fear of something breaking at some point is a turn off, is easy to use Gamepass since you don't own anything on it and is cheap enough if something breaks is no big deal.

Bear with me but I don't think the MS Store has been putting pressure on anyone given how abysmal it is to use. The cut works in favor of devs, it doesn't really change anything for users. Those companies have to get it through their skulls that to grow market share on PC, they actually have to care about users.

The problem was always that lowering the cut could start a race to the bottom that Valve could never sustain, most of their revenue comes from the Steam sales, while Epic and Microsoft can eat whatever cost the stores make with their other arms of their business.

Maybe with time Valve lowers their cut but it's not the track they want to follow.

PS: It still means fuck all if the store is a piece of shit, talk about how it benefits the customers for a change, sadly I can't be a charity for devs.

I think this puts more pressure on Epic at the moment, as one of the two major pc stores to now offer this, EGS offers next to nothing for the end user, while MS has gamepass and ties to your OS. Makes EGS even less attractive an offer.

It may be the pebble that bursts the dam on dev cuts, but for now i dont see anyone but Epic looking bad in this. I of course expect PCgamer and such to "prove" me wrong.

Yeah, while I could still see Valve lowering the Steam cut, I don't think it would be to the same extend as Epic or MS. At best I could see the current tier for the most successful games either matching the 12% cut or being slightly higher (like 15%?).

While I of course like the idea of developers getting more of the cut (without the theatrics of Epic...), I don't see how Valve can lower their cut and keep the unlimited key generating policy, which means a lot of trouble for other stores like Green Man Gaming, and a lot less discounts for us customers.

Sill, very interesting move from Microsoft. Not that I'm going to buy games there without some serious incentives for my side, since there is always a decent chance that you won't even be able to download the game you are buying without reinstalling Windows :p

Valve would simply have to adapt. Nothing wrong with that I think.

Well, as someone said here, what MS did puts more pressure on EGS than Steam basically because Steam model is open and pretty much self-service (even if the cut is higher than the other two) while MS store with GP gives devs more opportunities to engage with users, so, let's be honest here.

Steam is classic model, self-service and open
MS is new model, Gamepass, mid-open, curated
EGS is classic model, self-service and curated

Which one is more irrelevant in the long term when it comes to system and adaptation?

Keep in mind that Steam works well with other stores pivoting around them like GOG or Itch and as I said, MS offers GP, what does EGS offer instead? I bet even more people use GP than EGS and that means visibility, hell, a lot of people try GP version and buy the game, so....

Customers are the first to get hurt when a company wants more profits, and since Valve revenue comes from Steam, a lesser cut would mean more things for developers and less things for the customers.

And also outside of the western perspective, other markets are more reliant on other payment metods with a higher transaction fee or with heavy use of Steam Cards that you can pay with physical money, which also comes with a high operating cost and it's for a lot of people their only way to spend on steam. Again, there is no much room to adapt when you compete with juggernauts that are 10x your size.

I know it's trendy in some places online to be pro-devs no matter what but since apparently 40% of devs think anything up from 10% is too much i don't know who is more delusional.

I don't see any reason for Valve to lower their cut for non-AAA games right now - this isn't luring people away from steam. Sure, if the MS store improves, if it actually becomes something with a large and willing userbase, then indie devs can use that as a tool to negotiate a better cut with valve (one of the many tools btw, I'm not at all saying that devs are at all dependent on some competitor store to demand a better cut). But as it stands at the moment, it's just a move by MS to make developing for the MS store more appealing, it's not consumer-focussed at all and that's what ultimately matters. There is no base for negotiation, if there's no actual alternative to the status quo that would hurt valve.
