Tackle incredible game hazards, such as spinblades, gun bunkers, huge boulders, Firejets, pits, Firechutes, Lavawalls, gas grates, and more.

Great OP, as per usual, lash. No need to worry. With my backlog, I'm almost happy not to get a long list of recommendations.

Wonder how often Squenix will be patching this Nier game. At least it can't be less often than Nier Automata.

Speaking of anime (kind of), I played through Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth (that freaking name). I found it to be... OK. I'd been sitting on it since it came out in EA ages ago, waiting for it to be finished. The overall core is fine, nothing outstanding, but the enemy+room+combat design all put together leave something to be desired - with some improvement in any of those areas I think it would have been much better.

Basically, standard 2D platforming castlevania-esque combat. If you touch an enemy, you get knocked back and lose a bunch of health, if an enemy attack hits you, you get knocked back and lose a bunch of health, if you get hit I think 3 times in a moderate time span you get straight up stunned. Because the knock backs are so huge and hit recovery is so long there were times when I went from full health to dead against normal enemies where I literally couldn't react. Adding more frustration to this, the hitboxes of enemies are not super clear, and some enemies have attacks that basically require you to just retreat across the screen to avoid because they overlap with other enemies' attacks so broadly. It's also far too difficult to tell which spirit you are using on the fly when looking at your character, which you need to constantly because you need to be moving pretty much all the time (and thus, dodging). There's an easy marker at the top of your screen, the opposite of where you are, but it really needed to be more present on Deedlit herself.

Maybe as compensation for the general difficulty of actually using weapons on enemies, magic and bow attacks are quite strong, but capped by mana, but mana is easy to recover - sometimes, and against some enemies. You can go several rooms in a row with no easy mana recovery options or just room after room of basically infinite mana. Spamming magic or arrows is relatively effective against some of the more annoying enemies if you sit there and change your spell constantly. Some enemies are also just mega tanky, require jumping to interact with because they hover offscreen, and you quickly learn you're best off just trying to get past them or knocked back past them.

It technically fulfills the requirements of calling it a metroidvania but the exploration is pretty limited, there's usually 1 room in each stage that requires an upgrade you get later (or unlocking a door you can later), otherwise just breakable walls hide things. There is very little reason to backtrack as I think all the upgrades you'd want are available as you progress naturally.

The boss fights are pretty good, except for the last two boss fights, which I don't want to spoil but it does the whole "fail a phase? Here, waste your time on everything easy all over again!" except it's even more egregious how pointless it is due to some specifics of them. It literally felt like padding, in a pretty short game, for no reason.

I was aware of Record of Lodoss ages ago but never watched it, I do know it brings in a lot of characters from it to have a few lines of dialogue here and there, but it is not really a story game.

Overall, just OK. I would put it pretty far down my list of metroidvanias to recommend, but it's not strictly an avoid. It feels like it kept too many oldschool ideas that negatively interact with modern things they added, and I wish it was just more refined. It emulates Symphony of the Night in various ways but not in enough of them to bring it up a notch. Maybe a 6 or 6.5 out of 10 from me.

Yay, new thread. Thanks, lashman!

I wonder if we'll get some Shadow Warrior 3 news this month. Wild Hog's been awfully quiet.

April already? I barely finished Yakuza 3 and started 4.... so many (long) games....

As for this month, Nier is really far faaaaaaaaaaaaaar away for me thanks to Square's great regional pricing.

And of course, thank you lashman for the thread :)

I missed this post - I've got a review that's going to go up for this fairly soon, but Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth is 100% worse than Touhou Luna Nights. Which is a shame.

I personally didn't enjoy Touhou Luna Nights much either, and Deedlit is much more my style of game - closer to a traditional metroidvania than not, whereas TLN was like a 2D bullet hell combo game? Just a preference really, but yea Deedlit comes off as just not super familiar with the genre which is not what I would expect.

I would say despite the genre mismatch for me Luna Nights is still the game of the two I would recommend.

Luna Nights just makes much better use of its mechanics than Deedlit does. By the second half of the game you've more or less seen everything unique it has to offer, while Luna Nights is still doing interesting things with its time mechanics.

Now let me take the time to explain why it's so cleaver. It's cleaver because its referring to NieR which is a game that is coming out this month and FAR is referring to the Mod that Kaldaien worked on to Fix Automata Resolution.

That is all.
Also the game is NieR but any official patches to fix the game will be FAR.

I haven't gotten around to completing any games lately. I've ended up playing Dota again because of the anime and now I'm spending most of my time on the custom maps.

Great OP. Thanks for the new thread lashman.

Taxes really kicked my ass this year so I have had to basically avoid buying any new games for months now. The beauty of it is that with 2k+ games in my library I have had more than enough amazing games to play; all hail the bundle backlog! Thinking about selling my Switch too while prices are good and then picking up a pro version when that eventually comes out.
