I was on a holiday-travel return flight yesterday and fired up my iPad Mini to play some Divinity: OS2.

10 minutes later the person sitting next to me pulled out a Deck and fired up BG3.

First time I've seen a Deck in real life. Thought about striking up a PC/Valve-appreciation convo, but let it slide as we both had headphones on.

It was kinda surreal either way though.

Was tempted by a Deck but I can't sacrifice my frames
With the OLED, you can push the device as much as you want, and still get over 2 hours at full battery, so still fairly decent. If you play a lot of titles that push hardware, then I can see a good argument against it, the Deck isn't really great for those. I assume a Deck 2 will help to catch up with next-gen performance, but until then those titles will be hit or miss.
Luckily, I play a ton of older titles, or things that don't tax systems that much.

Curious abut the revenue. Destiny 2 is suppose to be on thee verge of death, but is in Platinum tier. Lethal Company has no doubts sold millions, but is in silver, Dave the Diver also sold millions, but is in Bronze and so on.

Still, good year it seems. Also, Valve don't increase amount of let's say platinum revenue games, every year has 12 games.

Its the game of the decade so its gonna keep selling.

The Erdtree expansion they are cooking up will probably be larger than your average AAA games these days.

+ Switch 2 version + Next gen console re-release. The game will probably do 40-50 million lifetime.

Bungie has over 1000 employees, that’s a lot of people that Destiny 2 has to support on its own, especially if player engagement is trending downwards.

From what I've read, the latest Destiny 2 expansion had a great start, but collapsed afterwards so the numbers might be frontloaded.

Also Counter-Strike is probably the #1 game by a wide margin. I have it pinned at making nearly $1 billion this year on case openings. This site shows 376.9 million cases opened as of November 2023. At $2.50 per key, that's $942 million before December's numbers come in. That also doesn't include stuff like stickers which makes tens of millions of dollars and Steam Market transactions.

Basically what I'm trying to say is running an online casino masquerading as a shooter is highly profitable.

I think they've made a lot of money with the Lightfall release earlier this year, it's just that things seemingly plummetted afterwards because it was not at all well received and Bungie is a very expensive studio to run since they have over a 1000 employees and at least one more game in development (Marathon).
We also don't really have info on how well they are really doing - the news were about their revenue projections being wildly off the mark, for all we know their actual revenue could very well still be easily enough to actually run things.
The layoffs were seemingly because management fuckers were trying to save their own ass by cutting costs to desparately keep the "Sony takes over if we collossaly fuck up" clause at bay, not necessarily because they didn't have enough cash to keep them actually employed or anything.

Is this the first time user gets malware from a game on Steam?
Nope.

(Valve toned down, and also allow mobile app to confirm)

this might be a recent addition in the beta client, but Steam finally lets you drop items into the basket without immediately taking you there, instead prompting you if you want to add more games first.

It also grabs the cheapest option, but I think someone noted that before

Another reason to switch to Linux?
No, the more people use linux the more it becomes an interesting target for bad actors. If bad actors found out that targeting Linux through Proton is valuable enough they would do it.
Proton allows you to run windows "stuff" on linux, including malware.
What said malware is going to do once it's run really depends on the malware itself, if bad actors start targetting linux through proton then you're not safe.

You're not safe on Windows, Mac or Linux.
You're safe if you and people you depend on always use common sense, meaning you're never 100% safe since you rely on others and chance.

RE4 or God of War or Uncharted? Really only want to buy one 'expensive' game this sale.

Even though you can play U4 without previous games I really can't recommend that. It really isn't the same. There is a lot of character growth and bonding in the trilogy that is hard to ignore and just jump into U4.

So just did my vote for GOTY. So thought I would do an expanded version of what I sent to Le Pertti .

GOTY 2023
1. Baldurs Gate 3 (PC)

There is only one game this year that I have played that has consumed so many hours, and that is Baldurs Gate 3. This has rekindled an interest in CRPG's and in table top games. When played in Co-Op it's about the closest you can find to the table top experience. The soundtrack is sublime and the voice cast is difficult to fault. Yes it has it's faults, the bugs become more apparent as you get further and further into the game. However it just made me understand why Fromsoft fans love their games.

Honorable Mention:

Rogue Trader - I just haven't played enough of this to say how well it stands up. I am about 30 hrs in and have enjoyed it a lot. In a post BG3 world I have had to step down my expectations a little bit (not fair on this game I know). However there is a lot of good in it. Being able to follow one of three ideologies is cool. If you go down the Dogmatic path there seems to be an option for executing just about anybody. Ship to Ship combat is fun. However there are bugs (t-posing corpses, characters moving with a static pose), there is too much combat at times, you seem to level up far too often and levelling up can be frustrating (there is a lot of trying to actually figure out what skills do). At this moment in time it would maje the list, but I am only on Chapter 2 and I believe the next chapter is fairly weak.

Ongoing:
Final Fantasy XIV - It couldn't be anything else really. I have put 600 hours into this game, I am currently trying to do Ultimate content for a shiny sword. I have been running a lot more content with friends in the FC and this is all during a content drought in the game. Can't wait for Dawntrial to come out.

Best Soundtrack:
Baldurs Gate 3 - For a long time this was going to be FFXIV and in particular the soundtrack to patch 6.3 (Dedicated to Moonlight was doing a lot of heavy lifting here). However BG3 came along. From the beatiful Down by the River and Weeping Dawn to some of the great tracks in the combat. Just all round great music.

Best Old Game:
Stardew Valley - It was either going to be this or Teraria. Each year I come back to one of these games and this year was Stardew Valley. Each time there is something new for me to do, a new character to romance, a new farm to try out or just new content that has been added. I haven't even hit the point yet where I try playing with mods either.

Turd of the Year - I usually have an idea of what games I want to play. So generally I can avoid disappointment. So my turd of the year is the gaming year as a whole. Now don't get me wrong, this has been one of the strongest years for games alround. From the AAA down to Indies there has just been too many good games. However it's the year where the corporate mask well and truly slipped off. From the rampant redundancies throughout the industry (how the fuck do you run a company raking in fortnight money and still have to lay off people (rhetorical question)) to management letting the mask slip (bungie management not even considering taking a paycut to save staff "we aren't that type of company"). And then there is Embracer showing what consolodation of the gaming market can look like, at an amazingly accelerated rate.

So yeah, to quote someone far smarter than me "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times".

Mt. Whatever
Something I've wondered for a long time is why all the PC Streaming apps like Steamlink need a router as intermediary instead of just directly linking to whatever Stream device. (Deck or Tablet via Steam link.)

Like if I have a Wireless adapter in my PC, why can't Steam Link stream directly to my tablet 10 feet away in my bed? Instead it wants to use the router some 4 walls, and 60 feet away and then from the router to my Tablet... which makes it unusable for me.

Setting up your pc as a hotspot using the wireless adapter should let you share everything direct to the device connected to that hotspot without the need for a middleman.

I was told that the best selling game list wouldn't be available until January. I guess some one from the Steam biz team saw my post and got to work since the lost went up the following day.

Anybody knows a keysite with a FaceRig Live2D Module stock gift or key?
I need this module XD (yep I know VTube Studio but I prefer FaceRig). I've tried here but this a scam site, false stock (waiting for refund).

It has recently dawned on to me that I really like CRPGs. I mean, I really enjoyed Wasteland 3, Disco Elysium and somewhat Pathfinder Kingmaker (I understand the mixed and mostly positive Steam ratings for the game), but at that time I just never thought that I was playing CRPGs, I played them because I liked them a lot and I had a lot of fun with them. But when I checked on Google on "best CRPGs" today because I knew BG3 is a CRPG, those game I mentioned came up.

I think I own most of the CRPGs on PC based on lists I found.

So put a bit more time into Darktide. It has improved a lot, there is a bit more variety in there, the gunplay is as good as it was at the beginning. The skill trees allow you to customise your character a fair bit and there are some more unique monsters in there vs at the beginning. It is a great co-0p game.

HOWEVER it still has too many bugs in tere. We just spent a couple of hours in the game, one person crashed twice, I crashed once. It looks to be a bit too stuttery (however this could be my settings as well).

Anyway, only game I have picked up in the sale is Dave the Diver. Grabbed the new expansion for Vampire Survivors as well. So time to charge the Deck up and get some games installed.

We live in wild times. Sometimes you see stuff so out there and you are no longer sure what is real and what is fake.

Take "X" and Tesla and the Elon Cult. Crazy stuff. Hive minds are scary.

The whole Console War stuff (at least in the last almost 20 years) and also some PC stuff as well. At least in the 90s some of the reason for that was because people could only afford 1 system at a time (they were likely very young kids). Now we live in a time where the people that likely complain online about that stuff have enough disposable income that they can actually buy both of the systems and try games for themselves.
