Alright, i had to narrow stuff down for Xmas I got steamgifts/giftcards so I have like 75?~ but I eyeballed that stuff but if anyone had suggestions or anything or wanted to shit all over my ideas since im going back and forth on stuff a lot
The only thing I'd say is that Square Enix games are typically cheaper on GMG than they are on Steam so if you're getting Tactics Ogre Reborn I'd have a look on GMG first.

I have two games in very probable purchase territory in January.

Rebirth, but I’m still to replay FF7 and Remaje / Crisis Core, so yeah not that probable,
And Ender Magnolia. Which is a no brainer, the first one was a great Metroidvania. But as days pass I’m more and more scared it will just be exactly the same and I’m not so sure anymore.

So yeah, at a glance, it could be a saving month, which would be great given how December wrecked me.

Not to mention that my energy + heating is magically going to be 188 monthly. Christ on a Velociraptor !

Talking about graphics, I tried the Veilguard character creator very recently.
Now, I don't play a lot of AAA games (especially western AAA games) -- basically the last one was probably BG3, and that's not really focused on graphical fidelity to the same extent as other games with a budget like that.

So what am I actually on about? The hair.

I've had a passion for hair rendering and simulation for 2 decades or so, and the hair in that character creator is by far the best combination of rendering technology, visuals, variety, simulation and detail I've ever seen in an actual game. Pictures don't really do it justice of course.

Why isn't absolutely everyone talking about this? I can think of only 2 reasonable explanations: (i) hair of that quality is actually standard in Western AAA games these days, and I just don't know it; or (ii) people are actually talking about it absolutely everywhere, but since I also don't consume any gaming media I just missed it.
Some might also propose that it's because people don't care about hair technology, but that sounds exceedingly unrealistic to me and I'd discard that explanation.

Also, finally worked out what was BSOD'ing my PC. It was steam. Haven't quite worked out how to fix it, but I can bypass it easily.

Certain games running in steam when loading the main menus were were doing something over the internet via the ethernet adapter that the killer network suite did not like at all. The same game on Epic, Outer Worlds, ran fine, another couple ran fine using legitimately obtained for scientific purposes pirate copies and all the games ran fine when the ethernet plug was disconnected. Dug up my old wireless dongle and all the games are fine as well when steam is connected to the internet via that. Thanks gabe!

Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree is pretty great so far. Haven't touched the game since I finished all the cheevos in march 2022, really loved the game, but since then I have been burnt out of soulslikes and Elden Ring it self due to how long the game was. Also never really explored Caelid.

After Erdtree I expect myself to play Nikoderiko and Lorn's Lure.

People have been talking about the hair since a few months before it came out. I thought it was pretty funny that DF included it in their list pretty much solely for that reason. Honestly I think the reason why it seems like no one cares is because the game was such a dud. Like yes it has nice hair but everything else about it ranges from mediocre to awful. It's the same reason why no one talks about immortals of aveum and the tech they pushed...game was like a 4/10 so who cares lol.

I also think some of it is just people not caring that much about graphics anymore. I've been noticing a general sense of fatigue about it online, maybe because of all the news in the last few years of budgets breaking many companies. That's just a guess on my part.

edit: My personal opinion on the hair in DA is that it's fine but honestly it kind of stands out because no other part of the characters in the game look that realistic. The way their faces look and animate still feels like bioware games from late ps3/early ps4 gen. It's so lifeless looking.

I think I still do too but I've become a lot more picky with it. Like horizon FW is arguably the best looking game ever but I just...don't care, because the game is so bland from top to bottom.

But I still marvel at how good Uncharted 4 looks and all the destruction it has and that game is almost 10 years old but still looks better than most games today. I guess the game has to be great or do something really crazy with its tech to impress me now. I just don't care about texture increases or character model bumps anymore.

This is one of those things that's really the same as when people blame some game for BSOD'ing their system.

It's never the game, and in this case, for the same reason, it's not Steam. It's a broken driver.
User mode stuff cannot BSOD your system unless something below it is broken.

Your screenshot even says as much, and it is absolutely correct in this case.

Hey now, user could easily BSOD Windows ||95|| at will, you just had to eject a CD while anything was reading from it.

Has anyone else started to notice that some Steam discounts are slowly moving back to the highlight years of 8-10+ years ago?

Quite a few 90% discounts for some at least AA games. I got Everspace for less than a euro.
A few years back it seemed that pretty much everything stayed in the 60%-75% range at most.

And wouldn't it be awesome if the subpage that highlights very deep discounts (reachable from the main page), actually changed highlights each day? Feels like an oversight.

In Oslo for a few days, anyone been and have recommendations on what one has to see and do?:)
I enjoyed the Holmenkollen Ski Museum. The jump they built there for the Olympics is pretty epic.

On a random side note, is there a Mobile View toggle for this site? Odd question after all these years but the text is so tiny on my iPad. I know there’s an increased font setting but toggling it didn’t seem to change anything.

Must be fake. At that price you only need to sell a kidney to get it, I'm sure nvidia wants both...

On a slightly more serious note, it would be funny if gpu prices are what finally kills pc gaming...

Unless you think you somehow need a high-end Nvidia GPU to play PC games, I am not sure what would make you think that. Especially now that Intel is actually starting to produce decent mid-range GPUs.

This is also nothing new. Nvidia began this game with the original Titan GPUs, which were complete overkill, and barely worth the absurd amounts they asked for them back a decade ago.

I still think that Intel's recent hype is a bit premature. They made a decent card at a decent price that competes with nvidia's most hated and worst card of the last decade. It's something but it's not that much.
As for needing high-end cards it depends on each person's use case. If you are ok with switching parts every 2-4 years then it's reasonable to go mid-tier or even low-tier, if you want to build a system that lasts 6+ years you're kinda forced to go high-tier otherwise your system won't be future proof. I personally fall on the latter group, I'd rather spend a bit more upfront and not bother with any hardware revisions for a long time than playing that game more often.

edit: and let's not pretend that even low and mid tier cards aren't getting more and more expensive, outpacing any sort of inflation or "normal" price increases.

Honestly, for 1440p gaming, even their mid-tier (by their own numbering scheme) card is darn good. They will still release a higher-tier model, which will likely still cost half of what Nvidia is asking for higher mid tier.

The "hype" around Intel is that there is finally a good budget option for people willing to spend their money on something other than Nvidia.

I also don't think buying super high end GPUs is at all reflective of the larger market. Let's be honest here: these are super niche concerns within the larger PC market. I doubt most PC gamers even seriously consider spending over a 100o€ on a GPU, let alone twice that or more. I can afford that, sure, but I understand that I am a nutcase willing to spend thousands on this hobby every 3-4 years.

Well, I will be skipping the "getting nearly bankrupted by PC upgrades" game for the 5000 series for sure, and probably the 6000 one too. The 4090 is just way too good. Maybe if path tracing really takes off I might consider upgrading during the 6000 series, but otherwise I should be good for most of this decade.

Same. Skipping 5xxx and waiting for 6xxx series.

Going to upgrade the rest of my rig instead, I want a 9800x3D which requires a new mobo anyway, so replacing everything and giving this current PC to my Dad, sans GPU.

GPU upgrades, I really want to upgrade from my 3060 Ti this time, I want something that can handle 1440p better, and I also want something that doesn't need much more than 200W, but at the same time I don't want to spend like 700+€ for a 12GB VRAM GPU (5070)...

Rumors that the 5060 Ti is gonna have 16GB VRAM, but with a 128-bit bus width, depending on how its performance compares with 4070/4070 Super/4070 Ti, I may just go for that this time, and then upgrade to the 6070 in 2 years (and give the 5060 Ti to my sister). :/

Though, if the 5070 ends up being cheaper than I expect (I'm expecting 700+, so, by cheaper than expected I mean below 600€), I may go for that (as if Nvidia would price the 5070 like that)...

Recettear HD announced. No idea if the translation will carry over.
Well this is excellent. Recettear was an amazing game and I'd absolutely replay it again with this version.

Didn't disappoint but they're changing their entire strategy
That's exactly what I thought. "Our business model has worked out really well so far but we absolutely cannot continue this business model in the future". Sure thing bro :face-with-tears-of-joy:

I bought a 3080ti when GPUs were really hard to find, mostly because my old GPU was getting a bit old and I didn't want to be stuck unable to play anything if it failed. I also really wanted to use ray tracing. Turns out that ray tracing has made zero impact whatsoever on my gaming, so I'm not getting pulled into any more FOMO bullcrap with expensive hardware again. Nothing in the current gen has seemed worth the expense of upgrading, and with the way the 5 series is looked to be priced, I will be going AMD or maybe even Intel in the future. I was a high end card buyer, but Nvidia is making me a mid- to low-end buyer. Fine with me!
