I'm on a puzzle craze after replaying Portal 1&2. Gonna try The Talos Principle when I get my hands on it.

Any other first person puzzle games I should check out? How's The Witness? I hear mixed opinions.
First, zkylon suggestions are very good, specially The Swapper. I personally really liked the Talos Principle but it can be a little... obtuse.
But if you are looking for something similar to Portal and also short you can try Q.U.B.E. About 3 hours long.

The second one kind of missed the mark and is to easy but it does look a lot better.

i think the talos principle is an interesting game but not necessarily a very fun one and definitely one that didn't land for me

the witness on the other hand is probably one of the most amazing games i ever played. it's not a game that cares a lot about warming up to you but i think the puzzling in the witness is profound in a sense few other games achieve, you'll marvel yourself at how fluent you naturally become at its language and i found it very rewarding in almost like a spiritual sense. it does have very pretentious bad philosophy in it that is completely skippable although there's one long bit you should definitely listen to (i forgot who told me last that pretentious was a bad word to use in this manner but i forgot so whatevs!)

for other suggestions, just the ones i recommend off googling "puzzle games"
- if you haven't played braid yet, obviously do that (and probably play that before the witness i think).
- gorogoa is super impressive and clever
- i like mirrormoon ep quite a bit too, tho it's a weirder kind of puzzle game
- fez is amazing and i should some day replay it
- the swapper is excellent
- monument valley is much like gorogoa a massive achievement in combining aesthetic and gameplay
- lara croft go is super smart puzzle goodness distilled into something really intuitive and fun. i don't like hitman go but ppl enjoyed that one too
Thanks for the super detailed answer! Gonna go ahead and add The Witness to my wishlist.

I remember really liking Lara Croft GO. Gorogoa looks super interesting. I have a few of the others so I'll give them a shot.

This looks pretty cool. How's the story? Not that it matters a whole lot, but it made the Portal games more fun for me.

I hear The Talos Principle ramps up a ton in difficulty later in the game. I hope it's not too frustrating.

I'm actually playing through Q.U.B.E right now :) Gonna try Portal Stories: Mel next.

Thanks y'all for the recommendations <3

Who the hell is giving mixed opinions on The Witness, because this person must be dealt with.

It's simply one of the best puzzle games of all time. The thing that's special about The Witness is how it teaches you its own visual language, and how much sense that language makes. I strongly believe it's going to go down as one of the best and most enduring games of this generation.

The only negative about the game is that it has Jon Blow's usual pontifications in it. I don't mind that stuff personally, and actually enjoyed some of it (having a clip of James Burke's Connections is delightful to me). However, if you find Blow to be well...a blowhard, just ignore the audio recordings and such and just play for the puzzles. They're still some of the best of all time.

As for more puzzle games, first-person ones are pretty rare. The Talos Principle is neat, but I never found myself super into it and ended up dropping it after I found some puzzles a little too unclear for me. I'll go back to it later though.

The most obvious Portal-inspired puzzler is Antichamber:

A co-op puzzle I've heard about (but never had anyone to play with):

I've seen this in my queue a few times actually, but I have no idea if it's any good:

You could return to the granddaddy of puzzle-adventure games in Myst:

Or try their newer Myst-like game:

If you want something a little more simulation-based and like Zachtronics:

If you're looking for something less strictly puzzle-gamey and more adventure gamey, you could play around with an FMV game like Tesla Effect:

Or Obra Dinn for another similar, adventure gamey first person experience:

the lecture bit in the witness was amazing for me as a brian moriarty fan but yea, it can be dense

also i'm personally not a fun of either c.u.b.e. or antichamber. they're kind of neat on a concept level but don't do much for me

also well obviously hexcells and paint it back are both fantastic but i don't think they fit the criteria

I think you and zkylon have sold me on The Witness.

Also, I keep forgetting Antichamber exists. Always liked the visual look of it.

Some of your recommendations have demos (Bendy/Tesla) or are free (We Were Here) so I'll give those a try and will research the others.

Thanks Sampson!

I had ti ponder for a bit to remember the witness xp
There is one puzzle that is tied to an audio cue so if one ia deaf or has poor hearing they would have difficulty clearing it unless there was an update that fixed it.

there's also color puzzles that are probably impossible for the color blind. it kind of sucks but i guess the alternative would've been not to have these puzzles and that'd suck too

luckily none of these are required, the game asks you to get a number of areas done to finish it but the rest you just complete for the experience. not even needed for the super secret stuff that's one of my proudest moments ever

The Witness is a hard game to digest. That's for sure. It's one puzzle design stretched to its limits + a lot of philosophical ramblings mixed in.

One game I haven't seen mentioned is Quern. Put it in your list.

Sounds unique and appealing. Did you end up liking it or perhaps felt indifferent towards it?
Gonna check out videos on Quern. Thanks!

Might not be similar enough to Portal but I'd also suggest The Room games. I played one and two over christmas and they really scratched that itch of figuring out a puzzle. It is fairly simple in places but still enjoyable.

I've heard of the games before but never realized how highly rated they were. All overwhelmingly positive. They're on my radar now. Thanks!

I did promise a giveaway

While I'm not entering this one, wanted to thank you for such a cool giveaway, still unbelievable that my first purchase of the year has been an Atlus JP game on Steam.

EDIT: Almost forgot to also thank The Queen for her Onimusha giveaway, as always such generous from her, it was 01:30am and that's why I almost forgot hahaha

If I were an arse I'd say that the lack of a Switch ver. is a consolation :V
But I am not an arse, at least not in that sense, and just say that them skipping the Switch is kinda odd. Did Falcom or xseed say anything about releasing CS1 and 2 onto Switch?

I'ma be obnoxious and say that those saying to 'wait and see what they got to offer/give them a chance', need to be reminded that that's what was said about the spoiled orange running the USA :V

we are living in the worst timeline now, it is official
Trails fans have been living in it for at least a year, apparently.
NISA have had the license for "over a year" at this point
If this is true, it makes it more understandable for me as to why Tom and Hatsuu left Xseed. Not the main reason, of course, but something that could push them a bit, as they seemed very passionate about Trails and Falcom games.
