random post about Cold Steel IV

there is something about this game that I just realized about a certain maid character

DO NOT OPEN THE SPOILER TAG IF YOU HAVE ANY INTEREST IN THE TRAILS SERIES AND YOU DIDN'T PLAY COLD STEEL IV YET

so I was randomly thinking about the different title Sharon has in CS4 compared to the previous games, so Severing Eclipse vs Severing Chains.

I always thought it was just a different choice translators decided upon for the newer games much like the change to Zin from Zane that Xseed decided upon. I always assumed that since the last 2 (3 with reverie) were published by Nisa they could no control the previous translations and thus the reason for the different title.

Turns out that's not the case, just found out that her title Severing Eclipse in japanese is 告死線域 and Severing Chains is 死線.

I thought this was just a change in translation and it kinda blew my mind

Security researchers have warned that a database containing no less than 26 billion leaked data records has been discovered. The supermassive data leak, or mother of all breaches as the researchers refer to it, is likely the biggest found to date.

I have no idea if Palworld is a good game or not but watching the whole world burn from the sidelines has been a blast so far.
The sad thing is it really isn't anything special. It's this year's early access survival hit and from what I've seen you spend hours in the beginning doing the same basic survival stuff it just has pokemon-looking creatures in it too.

All this drama for something so...mundane.

Can't wait for all Palworld clones coming up.
I don't think anything can top it's status as a surprise hit of 2024.

(Shame it's not actually pokemon-like.)

Rather PC + Steam Deck + emulators for me. Buying new hardware to play a specific game doesn't make sense for me nowadays.
I would love to do the same and be pc-with steam deck- only player, but I meet me and I know that I end buying the next Nintendo console if they don't mess too much.

Well, 20+ million people buy shit and mundane pokemon games for decades, so...

Finished Doom Eternal. Played through the whole thing on the Deck. Absolutely brilliant game. The amount of enemies that it throws at you towards the end is absurd though. I have no idea how I made it through that chaos.

God, I'm sick of hearing about palworld.

Two former Nintendo employees talking about Palworld's success. They're not talking from a position of authority, but making assumptions with their experience. Some tl;dw

-Nintendo typically looks down on these types of games
-Nintendo was almost certainly took by surprise at its success
-Nintendo has a complicated relationship with The Pokemon Company and usually bows down to them
-The Pokemon Company is almost certainly not happy
-Nintendo may not do anything as potentially taking away a game from millions of people would be a PR nightmare
-Nintendo may work behind the scenes to prevent another Palworld from happening again

And they talk about their own experiences playing the game and how it is well made and isn't just a big joke.
Why did Nintendo let them go? I remember they were the spokesman for Nintendo of America? Was it just that times changed and it cost too much to keep them around? I think it was mainly YouTube videos that they use to work on.
What was the gameplay of Digimon New World like?

Maybe this is all that Digimon needed? Just give Digidesten guns and instead of having the gameplay be a VN/SRPG game make it an open world co-op survival game.

There is probably two things happening on Epic right now, the bizz side is trying to convince The Pokemon Company that licencing Pokemon to release a mode on Fortnite is an amazing idea, and the dev side is rushing to make a Palworld ripoff, that they will release a rough build asap with or without the Pokemon license, just like they did with PUBG aka Fortnite Battle Royale.

One thing I don't see mentioned in this Palworld discourse (which I am also getting tired of) is that the game is half price compared to a "normal" $60 release or the "new normal" $70.

Being cheaper will drive a lot of sales regardless of quality (or perceived quality). How many copies would this game have sold if it was 60-70? Still a lot but probably not 5million.

Let's say it like that:
Spiderman has sol.d 6.1 million copies at 70/80€$ in 24 days
Palworld has sold 6 million copies at 30$ in 4 days

Spiderman had a budget of 300 million (don't know if marketing is included)
Palworld had a budget of 6.5 million

armchair economics:
Spiderman made $420 million at $70
Palworld made $180 Million at $30

Spiderman made $120 million profit in 24 days
Palworld made $170 million profit in 4 days.

I'm still on the fence with Palworld. The Deck performances I watched across youtube vides left a lot to be desired.

Seems to be a very choppy 30-40fps in most parts of the world/gameplay. That type of performance is just meh. Its similar to Valheim and why I haven't returned to that game on the Deck. The choppy unity performance also similar fps and I just don't like that.

Also I'm not in the mood for survival stuff anyways so I'll just do my best not to buy it over the next 2 days while that 10% off discount lasts. Will just continue playing my backlog and maybe pick it up later this year after several more content updates. I am kinda scared Nintendo files some lawsuit that takes the game down tho. I missed out on that popular weird jumping only up platformer last year after it was taken down for stolen assets or wtvr. I'm still kinda pissed because I waited too long and it was right after the summer seal that it got clapped iirc. I had it in my cart too.

I wouldn't mind picking up a bunch of the old turned based Pokemon games on Steam tho :p Come on Nintendo...just do it. You want to slow down and derail the success of Palworld on Steam??? Dump a collection of all the old/recent Pokemon games on Steam at an affordable price with achievements, cards and a launch discount kthnx.

Not surprising, limited market means limited sales. They have option to make it PC compatible but they won't be trapping people in their ecosystem so they would be depending on profit margin for the HMD.

Meta has the VR market all sewn up at this point. Sony’s half-arsed foray into VR with PSVR 2 has completely missed the mark.

Great displays on the headset, but everything else has missed the mark. A chronic lack of games, no backwards compatibility with the old headset, closed ecosystem in both software and hardware, it’s connected to PS5 via a cable and it costs more than the console.

Utter shambles.

PC VR could grow again, but even the PC headset space revolves around being compatible with standalone headsets, specifically the Quest 2/3.

It is pretty weird that it is Facebook of all companies that is more open to having people use their headsets on PC -- where they earn nothing from software sales -- compared to Sony.

Eh, I thought it looked nice enough before but if they've done changes like all the random torches placed here in the beginning I'm not sure that's a good thing.

Edit: oh, this isn't the official remaster, okay that's good, phew. Yeah, not vibing with this mod.

I think the torches are pretty much a necessity, as you remove the lighting engine and replace it with something where you don't have a magical ambient lighting term. Meaning, if there's no light source, it's simply pitch black. That sounds silly when I say it out loud, but notice how in the original unless something has a backed-in black texture in the original, it is always essentially perfectly lit. That presumably goes out the window when you use RTX Remix tools (really interested in how this works under the hood).
Thus the need to introduce natural light sources like those torches. A fan-made mod for Half Life that introduced ray tracing did similar things when you are in pipes, where they added some lights to make it still playable.

1,985,342 currently, and yesterdays peak (1,846,421) was at around the same time (between 14.00 and 15.00 Central European time).

Reason: edited for SteamDB Link and updated the CCU several times, as it just keeps climbing

"my drill is the one that will break the heavens"
- Palworld maybe.

By the way I went and saw the second Gurren Laggen movie. Compared to a lot of other movies that I saw there was a good amount of people at the theater to watch that movie. Pretty crazy.

If you're yet to hop on board and wondering about what you're missing, you can relax. Palworld is big and controversial; it is also absolute rubbish. It's primitive and derivative, a game that appears at first glance almost to be completely fake - the type of thing quickly mocked up for a three-second appearance on a teen's PC monitor in the background of a mid-budget TV drama. A game to be played one-handed with an N64 controller by Tony Soprano - although honestly I think even he'd deserve better.
Back to the sensation of actually playing it though, and naturally Palworld doesn't feel particularly great. In a literal sense, whacking wobbly trees with axes and a single recurring combo of axe-swing animation and sound does not feel nice. Nor does punching otherwise docile sheep to death with your bare fists, watching your stamina run dry during slow, rudimentary climbing animations over rocks with visible seams, or running out of breath as you lug more stones up a hill.
. Play Palworld and you won't feel like you're playing something made with thought, or craft, or an earnest team's best intentions. You won't feel admiration or wonder. You won't feel any real sense of achievement. You won't feel like any artist has been involved, or that anything meaningful might come to mind. You will instead feel like you're playing a product designed to be sold, rather than to be played. You will feel like a mark.

Since we reached the Palworld peak for today I've run some numbers. The CCU peak growth from the first to the second day of full availability was 51%, then 22%, then 18%, and from yesterday to today it was 8%. It will be interesting to see if it can still grow tomorrow, and then what impact the weekend will have.

Traditionally, weekends have much higher CCUs than weekdays, so one would normally expect the game to substantially improve on its current peak during the upcoming weekend. But Palworld peaks in the Asian time zones, and I have no idea if this will be true for a game which does that.
