Man, it sure is nice to no longer have to worry about port quality for Falcom games. Things were looking pretty grim for a couple years there...

The pressure is on for Ys 9 with your expectations!

It's not that easy to get a well-performing port out of it (compared to anything based on mainstream engines).

Totally outdated.

In 2020, I want Vtuber manager.
I mean you only have to switch a few things around and it's basically the same thing.

Holo live = AKB49?

Sure why not. (I'm joking of course from what little I know the members of Holo Live would have been kicked out of AKB49 a long time ago)

I liked the format of this presentation a lot, great selection of games coming tô PC, only funny thing was the EGS logo omission on the Samurai Shodown segment.

I think it's because it was physical LE edition announcement.

During the for honor DLC, It showed as a generic PC game logo
Two possibilities:
1 - game is also coming to Steam at a later date (we don't know if SNK will just move on or if they will release it on Steam and thats why multi store logo)
2 - they feel ashamed of EGS release and they don't want to put that logo :grimacing-face:

So I've been thinking about those japanese games you are all so excited about. Should I, like, try some of them out? I don't like the anime aesthetic at all but I think I would be able to look past that if the games themselves are good enough. So basically I'm looking for recommendations on japanese games. I mostly enjoy turn-based strategy and role-playing games but I wouldn't mind recommendations in other genres.

Memes aside, do you have any particular experience with recent-ish japanese games? To see what kind of stuff you might like.

So you've never played any Japanese games and need recommendations from the last ~35 years or just something modern and recent that's easier to digest?

Not all Japanese games look anime. Like for turn based strategy there's nothing really anime about the long running Romance of the Three Kingdoms series...

Even Final Fantasy Tactics doesn't really look anime, whether in the full size art or the chibi in-game pixel art. It's all jst beautiful artistic direction in either mode.

Or pretty much all the popular SEGA games, save for early Phantasy Star and Shining Force games I suppose. Same for Namco and plenty other companies...

Anime is far from all Japanese games have had to show throughout gaming history so I don't get how anime is the reason to not have tried any these decades.

Anime itself has very different styles, it's not like all the 2D/3D artists out there work in the same exact way based on the region of their origin or something...

Even the same studio's output can look radically different, Princess Mononoke sure doesn't look like The Tale of the Princess Kaguya but both are Ghibli films.

Trails and Persona

I think Valkyria Chronicles is a great suggestion. It's very anime, don't get me wrong, but it's also really good, quite recent, and will probably be very affordable in the upcoming sale.

Something like Trails is harder to get into at first IMHO.

Trails in the Sky would be great then. RPG with turn-based combat. The first game is usually pretty cheap in sales and the series is unparalleled in world-building and making the world feel alive. Estelle is an excellent protagonist too.

If you want to branch out a bit, The House in Fata Morgana is an easily recommendable Visual Novel. The story is absolutely fantastic and tackles some very mature themes in a surprisingly... well, mature manner. Also pretty much lacks all the tropes people think of when they think of 'bad anime'.

Xanadu Next is an excellent old-school-ish Action-RPG slash Dungeon Crawler that doesn't focus too much on story, but when it does it's great too.

LiEat, despite what the capsule picture might imply, is short, emotional and touching mystery adventure in a very unique and interesting world with very very very light RPG elements.

I have played shamefully little of it yet, but even so I can say that Scarlet Grace is excellent. It's a very non-linear game with lots of reactivity in the world depending on your choices and a very tactical and rewarding battle system, and it does not waste your time with meaningless trash fights or running through big-but-empty areas.

Valkyria Chronicles is also a very good suggestion.

I personally both don't like and don't care about anime, but certain games like Persona, Trials, YS, Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy I like a lot.

I'll be real that if you haven't played any JRPGs before, let alone many Japanese games, The Legend of Heroes games might not be a great first suggestion as much as I do love the series. It's excellent, filled with great characters and world building and an enjoyable combat system on PC, but also a pretty easy game to bounce off of if you're not used to how the game's set their pacing, which is much less initially plot focused than the typical JRPG so it can feel like "not much is happening" at times. This isn't to dissuade anyone to not pick up the games, but just as a heads up from someone who's seen more than their fair share of friends try and bounce off the games after a near decade of being a fan of them. On the other hand, the Ys games from the same company are a much easier recommend. Those games are so fun to play and pre-8 are on the shorter side between 10-20 hours. Also very cheap when they go on sale.

Valkyria Chronicles is definitely a good recommend though, I highly recommend the 1st and 4th games (praying 2 and 3 come to PC some day). Fun characters and stories and some excellent gameplay.

Uh, does Chrono Trigger count as recent? I think the most recent game I played is The Last Remnant. Overall I've played very few games with an anime aesthetic. For example I haven't played any Final Fantasy other than 7. I've always been a PC gamer so I've never played anything that wasn't available on PC.

Fake edit: I did play Octopath Traveller for review purposes.

I'd prefer something relatively modern and I'd like to avoid games with sexualized characters.

As it happens I do own Valkyria Chronicles. I bought it to show my support for Sega's porting efforts. Should I start with that?

I mean, just make it run better than Ys8 on day one. Also maybe Nisa should actually attempt to give a shit in translating it the first time around. With enough time editing etc.
I don't feel like I'm asking for a whole lot here. But yeah, if Ys IX can live up that, than I'll be a happy man on its release date.

CS3 and Uta: Prelude of the Fallen are much, much better localizations than Ys VIII was, even after they redid it. Hopefully NISA can keep that trend going forward.

How modern? Cos stuff like Resident Evil 4 (if one was to suggest action games) feel pretty dang modern but are 15 years old.

So, modern-modern like, current "generation" (which disqualifies VC) or modern-in-feel and I guess readily available on current platforms (even as remasters)?

I was in this exact position when Persona 4 came out on PC -- I also find anime disgusting, but as long as there aren't balloon tits or sexualized children, I can overlook it if ithe game is good enough. I've played quite a few hours of it, and it's fantastic. It's my first JRPG (it is a JRPG, right?). I'm playing on easy, and the combat is super easy -- it's a great chillout game between that and the longer character-based activities. I'm definitely glad I tried it.

It took me many years to accept that I love Japanese games, so this anime game crap was kind of the last thing to try out. Previous games I've loved are the Yakuza series, Souls (more western than japanese, tho, I guess), obvious stuff like Nintendo first-parties, and stuff like Taiko no Tetsujin and Project Diva. There are also tons of random games like Tokyo Jungle, Fatal Frame, The Last Guardian, Nier Automata (gross alert), Bayonetta, Resident Evil, etc. I wouldn't have missed any of those for anything. Japan is so diverse for games it's kind of astonishing.
