“We have this whole cycle of infected life in the game” explains Dying Light 2’s Lead Game Designer Tymon Smektała. “The infected start as a Viral, which is someone who just got bitten and just got infected, so they still show traces of humanity, and at this point they are very quick, very dangerous – they avoid the sun at all costs. But after some time in that state, they turn into what we call Biters, which are your regular zombies; slowly moving infected that, if able, will try and grab you and infect you or eat you, but the sunlight is dangerous to them, and they are not as quick and as agile as the Virals.”

“And if Biters stay in the sun for a long period of time or under a UV light, they turn into Degenerates; decaying zombies that are very weak with pieces of flesh falling off of them, so they’re not really that dangerous to you. But still you have to keep an eye for them because Dying Light 2 is a systemic game, a lot of things happen emergently. And of course, there’s a different path of evolution for the Infected where they turn into the Volatiles, which are the most dangerous, extreme night predators. If you see them, you just need to run. There’s no fighting with those guys because they will just kill you.”

These days I'm almost scared to say I'm looking forward to a game because who knows where it will be available, but Dying Light 2 is looking interesting, plus I had a good time with the first one.

Also: Far Cry New Dawn already 50% off on Uplay. Ouch.

See? And people complain when I'm too pessimistic :confused-face:

Well, there it goes into "maybe I will get a year later and with 50% off if the developers/publishers can keep their mouth shut about how going exclusive is good for me" pile.

50% after barely three weeks is telling though, there was too much competition on release day with Metro obviously being the main reason it got buried alive.

Well it peaked on steam at 12K people. 20 minutes ago 1700 people playing. Dunno what constitutes a flop though. Ubi games go on sale usually fast though.

Ubisoft I'd guess

Perhaps. Or THQ Nordic. It's kind of useless to guess, it can be any publisher (except for EA I guess). Epic has billions to spend and exclusivity is their main strategy. I won't be surprised if the majority of games announced at E3 will be EGS exclusive on PC. They've only just started.

and you know what's really sad about this? that they'll eventually win

they just will ... people have no self-control ... there will eventually be one game on there to break a lot of people, and they'll cave ... they pretty much only have to be doing this long enough to get "that one game"

also the fact that no one seems to give a damn about the long-term health of the PC market and what the stuff epic are doing is doing to that market

also the fact that the majority of people playing on PC really don't give a damn where they're playing their games ... i mean - yes, there are LOTS of hardcore PC gamers like us here ... but the PC market is HUGE, much much bigger than it used to be ... and it might actually be true (i'm pretty sure it is true) that most people REALLY don't give a fuck where they buy and play their games ... like, see how many fortnite players there are ... or how many players games like LoL etc. have ... maybe we really ARE the small minority

Winning is a big word, but yes, Epic will find a way to become successful sooner or later. Many people hated Origin as well when EA pulled their games from Steam, but now almost everyone is used having multiple launchers. And while Origin exclusivity no doubt had a significant negative impact on games like Garden Warfare, Titanfall and indies like FE, EA is very successful with Origin Acess and Apex legends.

You're also right that the majority of people don't care where to play a game when a game is attractive enough. Despite all the complaining and whining about UWP and the Windows Store, many people caved in for Sea of Thieves and many more will throw their money to Microsoft for Halo MCC. As a result, chances are huge that Microsoft won't even bother to open up UWP anymore, having a severe impact on the open nature of pc gaming in the near future. But I guess most people don't care about that either.

I guess incredibly successful games like LoL, PUBG, Minecraft and Fortnite has caught the attention of big companies who want their piece of the huge pc gaming cake. These companies don't care about us as PC gaming enthusiasts; they care about the millions of people playing PUBG and Fortnite, while spending ridiculous amounts of money on cosmetic stuff that is extremely cheap to create.

But as usual, a bunch of smaller companies and devs WILL care about us, and will keep delivering us the experience that we want. That's the huge perk of the pc as an open platform: people can do what they want - at least for now as long as Windows has native win32 support.
Truberbrook also out today

Looks amazing! Wishlisted!

I've been noticing this, on comments around the internet.
First, people were like "screw Epic, I'm boycotting them". Then, when the free games started rolling, many of the same people started going "I'm only getting the free games, because I wanted them, but I'm not buying anything from them". Now, I see several of the same people playing the Satisfactory beta, and several others saying "between Satisfactory, Operencia, and a couple of others, I'll have to give them my money". :p

I have no doubt most people will, sooner or later, install the EGS client.
This isn't a criticism, just an observation, I'm not going to tell anyone how they should spend their money.

On the opposite side, I think many of us are worrying too much about Epic.
People are focusing too much on these exclusives. Have anyone noticed that, despite what it may seem, for each exclusive that Epic announced, there's a complete avalanche of new games releasing on Steam every week, and that barely anyone talks about?
And I have to wonder, is Satisfactory, Ashen, or Hades, better than the Resident Evil 2 remake? Devil May Cry 5? Sekiro?
Even considering Metro Exodus, and The Division 2, for each game releasing on EGS, there are dozens, if not hundreds, of worthwhile games releasing on Steam.

I have to take my hat off to Epic and these developers/publishers, though: they got a lot of free publicity. One would almost think the big games are no longer launching on Steam, or that games like Satisfactory are big, million copy sellers.

I don't think that'd sit well with my own personal ethics.....
How can I justify selling my keys for $30~40? because let's be reasonable who would want a Play-online version of the game in 2019 when the Steam ver. is more than likely the BEST way to play the game now. Consider that the games have been cheaper than $10 per title before.
Tbh, most people probably wouldn’t want the Steam version of FFXIV.

Many of us who play typically advise against purchasing it there because it locks you into Steam forever, meaning you can’t get keys for expansions elsewhere. And the Steam version gets less sales than the standalone does.

Unfortunately the very likely scenario is that people will cave sooner or later if there isn't a huge inconvenience on the way. Epic isn't utterly incompetent like Microsoft that thankfully made the adoption of UWP slow (so far, let's see if Halo moves the needle). It also has the resources to keep being aggressive well past the point where people get too tired of arguing.

While my opinion of those defending all that Epic is doing isn't great, I can't judge too much those the eventually cave because I'm sure I also have a "breaking point" when the backlog is depleted and/or a lot of time has passed and that one game comes out and is exclusive. Not seeing right now because I'm upset with whole thing, but things do fade.

I've never wished for a game to succeed quite as much as I'm wishing Apex Legends to become the greatest thing ever. An EA game!

It's a weird and conflicting feeling.
Oh, you are not the only one. I don't play any BR and yet I'm hoping that Apex starts the downfall of Fortnite. Probably not the most "noble" feeling but I don't really care :)

Wow, why's that? Seems pretty silly for S-E not to support it equally, then again this is S-E we're talking about....

Does the prospect terrify you? :V

I have no idea why the Steam version is locked, it's pretty stupid. But many a person has bought the Steam version, then tried to get an expansion key on the SE store, Amazon, GMG, etc, only to find out it doesn't mix with their Steam version. Definitely annoying.

How often do you guys upgrade your PCs? I was thinking of upgrading or build a new one once I finish most of my backlog (which could take a year or two tbh), but I'm sorta worried GPU prices will increase even more somehow, so dunno if I should do it soon or not

Prices of all components have come down again, graphic cards (after cryptoboom died), RAM falling, SSDs dirt cheap, CPUs in a good place with more fighting to come. Good time right now but we'll go lower before we're going up again, I'm certain of that.

Honestly? I kept my previous PC for about... 10 years. :p
The only thing I did to it was, after 5 years or so, my graphics card broke down, so I spend like 150€ to buy a new one.
I did not do any other upgrades in the meantime.

I have my current PC for about 2 and a half years, and unless something breaks down, I have no intention of upgrading any time soon.
I'm fine running games at 1080p. My monitor can't handle any better.
So far, I still can run pretty much everything I throw at it at maximum, or close to it (I sometimes have to reduce shadows a bit).
In a few more years, if I struggle to run games, I may consider upgrading my graphics card.

personally, for me, metro was a big deal and no, there are not a lot of immersive fps games with sneaking, that are not immersive sims (and are sequels of already great games) releasing.
sure you are right. there are hundreds of worthwhile games releasing on steam. but in that case, those worthwhile games are not Metro Part 3.
and that's why i panic bought it on steam.

chances are very good that bethesda/zenimax is the publisher in question and a lot of people will break with ES6. imagine that :p

I had my PC for around 4 years now, guess maybe it's too early to upgrade now that I think about it, lol.

I plan on upgrading my laptop and I regret nothing.
This GTX 970M lappy's carried me through many fun gaming experiences, but the time will come when I need to use DSR and my little fellow just ain't cutting it.
...but it's a tough little companion.

In general, whenever I'm not happy with performance anymore and prices are down. Last upgrade was a GTX 1080 when it was on sale, almost 2 years ago, I think.

chances are very good that bethesda/zenimax is the publisher in question and a lot of people will break with ES6. imagine that :p
I think so as well. TES6 exclusive (forever?) on the Epic store would break a lot of people.

So far it's every 5-8 years as inevitably something comes out that my current rig won't play well and then it's a slippery slide until i feel the need to upgrade. I've just replaced my old i5-3570k, 16gb, GTX 1070 OC PC with a Ryzen 2700X, 32gb, RTX 2070 PC so i'm good for a few years. I saved hard for a while as i planned to upgrade last year but didn't, I'm now back to putting as much as i can into my savings each month.

Don't wait too long. Five years ago I told ppl to buy more RAM. Many fools ignored my wisdom and then cried salty tears when prices jumped up again. Timing is somewhat luck coupled with exprience but if you keep up with news and look at price trends you're good,
