Hot Wheels Unleashed had a bit of a rocky start, especially with all the announced season passes and DLCs (I'm usually quite critical of games with various season passes, and high numbers of DLCs, but in this particular case since all of this content is from licensed properties, many of them surely expensive, I can somewhat understand why it's paid DLC), but the start of the first in-game season really changed things for me.
One of the bigger problems the game had is that it would reward you with small amounts of in-game currency, which made things slow as hell to unlock.
Having a game with lots of cars, and making things painfully slow to unlock, was really not appealing.
But, this first season, dedicated to DC villains, really fixed this, by giving you lots of coins and upgrade components left and right, with minimal effort.
To explain how it works: this season started a couple of days ago, and lasts until the second half of January 2022.
You do daily challenges, which can either be done in multiplayer, or offline against bots (which is awesome for a guy like me, who never plays online against other people), and you level up.
The season has free content, that everyone receives as they reach certain levels, and content you can only unlock if you buy the following DLC:
In an ideal scenario, this would have been free for everyone, but considering it's DC licensed content, and it includes 6 new vehicles + plenty of unlockable cosmetics, the price is decent.
To clarify: if you buy the DLC, you unlock one of the cars right away (since it's available for level 0), but all other content is unlocked by levelling up, so you still need to play the season to unlock the rest of the content.
You need, I believe, level 50 to unlock everything, and you have almost 70 days to do so.
To give you an idea of how things work, I started playing the season yesterday, and I'm already level 9, so basically to unlock everything you just need to play a few races every couple of days or so.
Besides the DC villains content, which is only for those who own the DLC, each level grants you coins and upgrade components, and the amounts are so generous I earned in an hour or so, split into two days, 10 times or so the amount of coins I previously had.
Just by doing these challenges, I managed to unlock 20 or so new cars (including stuff like K.I.T.T., or other cool looking cars), and it makes the game that much more enjoyable.
So yeah, these "seasons" really work well for the game. You fire up the game every day or two to play a couple of races, you level up, unlock time-limited content (if you own the DLC), and either way you earn currency to unlock all of the cool looking cars the game has to offer, so you are constantly getting rewarded with new stuff.
