Well I finished Ni No Kuni 2.
That was... kinda disappointing. But not because it was a bad game, it's not like a Compile Hearts game or the like.
It could have been much more if they actually invested time and effort in all the aspects of the game.
It looks really good, and the main story dungeons are very decent (if a bit simple - but miles ahead of anything I've played in years of JRPGs... level design really fell apart in the seventh gen in the genre... a topic for another time), they are nicely thematic with their own little gimmicks, decent verticality, they don't feel too samey and have an acceptable amount of landmarks even if they are quite linear.
But it sure as fuck isn't the case for the side content, which is copy/pasted crappy dungeons... made by RNG: it's not a slight against them, it's just is, they have randomly generated dungeons to grind in the game and they look identical right down to the room connections. And they have dozens of such dungeons! The overworld map and side quests are choke full of that derivative stuff.
The combat is not Ys 8, that's for sure... but it's decent enough. It's fast, well animated (even though there is that one common mistake: no you don't fucking swing your spear. That's NOT how it works), the story bosses are very good, each with their own mechanics and specific attacks to avoid.
But you have less than ten skills for each character. If you're lucky, some are so barebones that you don't even a real full set of active skills until the very endgame. It's terribly repetitive, and is made worse by the fact that...
The enemy variety is appalling, one of the worse in the genre. On that point, it's pretty close to Compile Hearts and other Z- developers.
No matter where you are, you fight the same groups of ennemies, with some variation on in a while, you can be continentsapart, dozens of hours later, and fight the exact same enemy group that you fought in the very beginning.
And they're not nearly as interesting as the main bosses...
In the same way, gear is trash.
Tons and tons of modifiers, that you can only get on random drops. Some specific on crafting... which is pointless since you will get better stuff so fast anyway.
That's "AAA, the JRPG" here, itemization is completely worthless and makes all loot a waste of time in inventory management, never interesting nor changing your gameplay. From Bethesda to CDProject, Ubisoft to Bioware, it's all garbage, and Level 5 is not new to making shit equipment. But at least they usually have a nice crafting system, in this game it's really dull. because...
The kingdom management aspect is boring as shit.
The few marginally interesting upgrades like faster movement speed are quickly lost in just waiting for mobile timers to go up, and just increments in... useless things. Since gear is crap, and the game is not hard at all( for the right reasons at least), it's all here to waste time and fuck around even more with the UI... and since you automatically get mountains of items from it. Crafting is even more pointless, and you never have any reason to explore anything,! Not like it was a strong point, but talk about removing it entirely.
But hey, at least the RTS minigame is okay. A bit buggy, but it breaks the pace well enough... and the story is alright I guess, it's basic but functional.
What really sucks is that the game would very solid if it was 15h long. It's just ridiculously stretched for no reason... except of course filling up the length quota, after all JRPGs players have a conniption when game don't last for ever and don't waste 100h with you spamming the same combo every 20sec for the entire duration of the game (hi Xenoblade, fuck you Xenoblade).
Tl;dr:
It probably would have been better as a more straightforward action game than an RPG, as it completely whiffed on character and gear progression, as well as making good use of its world.
But at least there's good elements, even if you have to dive into boredom to find them.
