Yet another year I have to post this at 6 PM because almost all of you live in the future!

You know the drill:

Reserve a post after this one and update it there. Feel free to throw in custom graphics in there if you wish so. There are no rules for what constitutes a finished game other than you feeling that you're done with it, although I'd encourage not to log games you just didn't feel like playing them after 15 minutes (but if you must, hey, I'm not gonna delete your posts...or would I?).

Since last year a couple of folks wanted to keep logging in the old thread, I'll keep that one open and just pin this one.

January

1. SIGNALIS - 15 hours | Incredible game, I'm not into survival horror but SIGNALIS grabbed my attention for the whole time I spent with it.

2. Kaze and the Wild Masks - 10 hours | Great platformer, some parts were hard but the controls were tight and responds well.

3. Frog Detective 3: Corruption at Cowboy County - 2 hours | Another good entry in the series, follows the same formula as the previous games so you can expect a lot of fun reading the dialogues.

4. Superliminal - 4 hours | Quite good mix of Portal and The Stanley Parable.

5. Tetris Effect Connected - 3 hours | Very relaxing, the controller vibrating with the rhythm was a nice touch.

6. Donut County - 2 hours |

February

7. Persona 5 Royal - 118 hours | Great JRPG. I loved the aesthetics and musics, there were some questionable things like the way LGBTQIA+ folks are presented in the game.

8. Mass Effect 1 Legendary Edition - 29 hours | A bit janky but enjoyable even though mostly of the levels were just copies of each other. I kinda liked the Mako parts.

9. Mass Effect 2 Legendary Edition - 41 hours | A big improvement over the previous entry, though I missed having a bigger Citadel but the Normady's facelift was nice as it gave the ship a sense of scale. The Hammerhead sections were enjoyable.

10. Mass Effect 3 Legendary Edition - 39 hours | The gameplay is a lot better than the two other games though I felt like there were less dialogue options to choose from, but I may be wrong there. The ending was ok at best, though I can understand the people who disliked it as they invested years in those games, and I remember the hype for the third game being through the roof. Too bad there isn't a vehicle to drive .

13. Frame of Mind - 53 minutes | Short First Person Puzzle game.

14. Chained Echoes - 55 hours | Amazing JRPG, clearly takes inspiration from a lot of games but can still walk by its own legs.

March:

1: Sons of the Forest: (Steam: 43.3 Hours 20/28 Achievements)

Thoughts: Pretty fun in co-op. Probably not so much alone. Story was whatever, you gotta make your own fun.

2: Returnal: (Steam: 18.9 Hours 9/38 Achievements)

Thoughts: Beat this in co-op as well, which locked me outta a lot of achievements and exploration so I plan to return to this someday. Uhm, Story was a bit disappointing, but gameplay holds up well enough. Very very buggy at PC launch. Hopefully upon revisit it's been patched up some.

June:

1: Mafia Definitive Edition: (Steam: 17.9 Hours 43/43 Achievements)

Thoughts: Ah now this was good. Stroy-driven action packed adventure in a cool historical setting. Plenty of character drama and twists and turns that you expect in Mafia stories. Unlike a lot of other open-world games this one is a bit more simplistic but that's good, because it doesn't overstay it's welcome or inundate you with useless shit to do. Enjoyed my time with this a lot.

2: Mafia II: Definitive Edition: (Steam: 45.6 Hours 67/67 Achievements)

Thoughts: Always loved Mafia 2. Beat it twice before on PS3. This is my first time playing the DLC also though, which was just ok. Decidedly more "arcadey" than the main game. Unfortunately this title didn't really get much of a graphics bump for being the Definitive edition, but it was still a fun game to get through again and narrative to follow with all the twists and turns.

3: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) (Steam: 12.9 Hours 27/27 Achievements)

Thoughts: A bit short even on Veteran difficulty but that's the norm for shooter campaigns really. Enjoyed this over all, was a fun romp in this day and age where Arcadey Shooter campaigns have kinda fallen out of production/style. Veteran difficulty was just challenging enough to keep me on my toes, and the story while nothing fancy was interesting enough and kept me engaged as I progressed. I wish if games weren't so expensive to produce these days that we could get more Shooter campaigns again...

July:

1: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022): (Steam: 19.2 Hours 24/24 Achievements)

Thoughts: A bit harder than MW1 on Veteran difficulty, and I wasn't particularly a fan of the forced Warzone crafting segments of the campaign. Still an overall fun and action movie like experience. Multiplayer is ok, but don't see myself sticking with it. I prefer Battlefield. (Just wish 2042 wasn't such a stinker.)

2: Katamari Damacy REROLL: (Steam: 9.9 Hours 21/21 Achievements)

Thoughts: Mindless fun with a boppin' soundtrack. I like the natural progression of the goals getting bigger and bigger, eventually rolling up the whole planet!

Thoughts: Wew, what a ride. About half way through ME2 I was quite burned out, but 3 finished strong and made lots of improvements. This wasn't my first time through the trilogy, but it was my first revisit since the original ME3 launch period. I think 2 is the hardest on Insanity, and 3 is the easiest. I tend to enjoy ME1 more than most, and dislike 2 more than the average ME fan, something about 2 just oozes "this is a middle game!" That and all the mech combat and the fact that insanity just layers enemies up more, even the generic mobs which makes combat that much more tedious. Thankfully ME3 does not repeat that...

1. Grand Theft Auto 3 (1/6/23) ★★★★☆

Was fun. Hadn't finished it, the camera was finicky, and i felt like I would get shredded (as in 1-2 bullets would end me regardless of armor or not) dam near every mission, but realized that I think I had done something wrong dam with mod installs dam near the end of the gameplay. Didn't fix it, just soldiered through and had to re-do every mission a few times. Anyway, was still pretty fun.

2. God of War (1/20/23) ★★★★☆

Planned on 100% this but finished 1 Valkyrie and didn't want to do anymore. Finished the story and...well here I am, I guess. Had fun with it, the challenge was good even on normal. Again, kind of bull headed everything and just kept trying until I finished it. I'd still like to finish it up, but kind of want to move on now. Good looking game, but definitely understand the criticism of it just being walking sim to cutscene to some fighting back to slow walking to cutscene. Didn't really mind it myself, but towards the end I noticed I would try to hit and dodge during every cutscene hahaha. Overall, I had more fun than i thought I would've.

3. Summoner's Mess (DNF dropped 1/21/23) ★★☆☆☆

This game is okay. I ended up getting annoyed pretty quickly with the main mechanic in the game, and the accessibility options ended up making the game a walking sim of sorts (accessibility options included: infinite torch, minimap). i liked the art, i only spent around half an hour with it, and felt i saw enough to move on.

Was pretty bad. Let's try to avoid hyperbole, it wasn't horrible, so no, it's not A Machine for Pigs level of bad, but still.

No real fear.
Stupidly non challenging mechanism that leads to, frankly, the best way to pass monsters is to get caught.
Which is not all bad because of the terribad encounter design. There is shit worth hiding behind.
Average to bad environments most of the time.

Yeah. I still have Soma to play but I'm beginning to chalk A Dark Descent as lightning in a bottle at this point.

02. Resident Evil Village DLC - Shadows of Rose - 08.02.2023
I murdered the DLC on Mastodon and then as it clearly wants to piss me till the end, I gotta admit the second half is FAR better than the first.
Maybe RE team is not doing itself any service by trying to do several flavors of survival horrors in the game. So yeah, first part, average RE manor, pretty shit. Very average. The second part takes more of a queue from the second boss segment in the base game and yeah, very good. Too much die and retry because your aren't clear, game, but whatever.

1. Midnight Suns (Steam) - Not what I expected, it's weirdly more the sims than card x-com. Characters are fun and the battle system is really good with heaps of variation, buffers like Strange, tanks like Cap and glass cannons like Ghost Rider.. Performance is good until it isn't and you need to reset your computer, massive memory leak. The sims element also drags as you spend like 80% in that part of the game. ★★★★ (80.6 hours)

#1, Days Gone. It's extremely average. Best part is when you headshot an enemy and sometimes Deacon says BAM or BANG in a very weirdly amusing and satisfying way. Super effective.

Updated my list to mark Jedi: Fallen Order done. Did my second playthrough on the hardest difficulty (which makes perfect parry timings even tighter + enemies are more aggressive). Some bosses that I found easy on my first playthrough (Jedi Maser) were definitely more challenging on Grandmaster, but also realised that force push is overpowered and will interrupt most attacks, including the unlockable ones. You can stunlock enemies with a basic 2-3 attack combo + force push. Looking forward to the sequel and see how it changes the gameplay. Hopefully less ponchos.

#2, Darksiders III. It's pretty alright. Not my favorite of the 3 I've played so far and I don't feel the urge to 100% it like I did with the other 2 (twice, because of the remasters), but it's totally fine. Fury feels a bit like a glass cannon. Some of the bosses hit hard and so the combat is really just a lot of dodging with a couple of hits in between every dodge.

Also I'm really bad at dodging.

#3, Echo. Interesting gameplay concept but it's not really all that great overall. I Rose Leslie though, but even she could not lift this up for me.
#4, Dreamland Solitaire. Relaxing casual solitaire game, not much else to say here.

#4 A Summer’s End - Hong Kong 1986
I liked this. The story and the themes were good but the actual writing is a little stilted, which is a shame. I think despite my not being a fan of the actual written text, I’ll definitely be back for the sequel.

#5 Dead Space (2023 remake)
It's basically the original Dead Space with a few modernisations and a voice for Isaac. If you didn't like the original, nothing done here will change your mind on this. If you loved the first one, you'll have a good time with the sequel. Feels like a AAA made just before AAA games became terrible - it has some quality moments but it's also padded out with things I call "cruft", such as pointless upgrade mechanics, backtracking and other silly nonsense to make the game "longer".

A DLC for a visual novel I liked a lot. It's not doing anything exciting or original and is probably not needed, but I loved spending a bit more time with these characters.

This is a Mario 3D World-like. Not my favourite sort of 3D platformer (I prefer the Mario 64/Odyssey-style personally), but I had a lot of fun with this. My girlfriend found everything about the game cute and adorable, and I appreciated that side of the aesthetic too. I've never played the Kirby games before, but I'm familiar with the series' signature gameplay, and I feel like this is a good translation of that gameplay into a platformer. Hopefully Nintendo sticks to Kirby for this sort of 3D platformer and keeps the 3D Mario games as more big ticket events.

#8 OCTOPATH TRAVELER II
Fun stories, a great journey, addictive mechanics that are easy to cheese. Octopath Traveler II is as perfect as a sequel gets. If you loved the first game but wanted just a bit more to pad the game out at the end, this is the sequel you wanted. If you didn't like the first one, maybe consider giving this a go, but it's essentially a polished version of the first one. For me, that's as close to SNES-style turn based RPG bliss as I'll ever get.

6. Dead Space (Remake) (Steam) - Fantastic remake/reimagining of the classic. Fixes a lot of the jank of the original, the asteroid shooting is gone replaced with a much better version etc... The voiced protagonist fleshes out the story a lot too. ★★★★ 1/2 (19 Hours)

XCOM 2 (Steam) - The New launcher integration sucks balls and made me have to restart once and even the the restart was still missing content due to the person who wrote the text in the launcher options having the grammar skills of a stupid monkey. Game is still great though. ★★★★ 1/2 (47 Hours)

8. Wasteland 3 (Steam) - Played the main game and the 2nd DLC, the first DLC had a moment near the start that made me rage quit it. Heaps of customisation and options, great story and exploration but does get pretty easy once your characters get really strong. ★★★★ (41 Hours)

9. Submerged - Hidden Depths (Steam) - Beautiful looking extension of the first game. Maybe lacks ambition, feels almost like a remake of the first instead of something new. ★★★ (8 Hours)

10. Dead Space 2 (Steam) - Still awesome but at times trades the intense claustrophobic nature of the first game for shooty shooty bang bang. ★★★★ (9.7 Hours)

11. Witcher 3 (Steam) - Best Girl Yennefer. Some fantastic quests but still suffers a bit from Ubisoft world design. Great world, boring repetitive content filling it. ★★★★ 1/2 (97 Hours)

12. Monument Valley (Steam) - Fun perspective shifting Escher-like puzzle game. Pretty light on difficulty, more just an experience. ★★★★ (4.1 Hours)

13. Gotham Knights (Steam) - Amazing city, decent story, average combat and traversal. Feels like a game that shifted focus at some point and was just crapped out in the end. ★★★ (53.8 Hours)

14. Figment 2 - Creed Valley (Steam) - Fantastic sequel to the original. Good puzzles and story. Game does throw you in the deep end at the start, probably needed a previously on... ★★★★ (6.3 Hours)

15. PowerWash Simulator Free DLC (PC Gamepass) - Just the free Final Fantasy and Tomb Raider DLC. The FF stuff is great, the Tomb Raider levels less so. ★★★ (10 Hours?)

16. Arise: A Simple Story (Steam) - Story of a recently deceased man looking back at the totality of his life. Each level has a slightly different time or space manipulation mechanic. Problem is the early levels are the best, level 3 is a stand out, some of the later ones are just a grind. ★★★ 1/2 (5.7 Hours)

Only played like a single game in 2022 and nothing else. 2023 has been like that too but I'll play a few games, though it won't be an improvement over 2021.

1. Wario Land 3 - completed on 25th March - Was a big fan of Wario Land 2 so this was a no-brainer. Each level is like a Metroid-style game where it can only be fully completed by revisiting them after Wario collects certain treasures from a level, which can trigger events or grant new abilities.

5. Chasm. It's fine, feels a bit weird, heavy, laggy, or something.
6. Watch Dogs. Eh. I like the recon camera jumping, and enjoy the stealth whenever the games lets me use it.
7. Watch Dogs: Bad Blood. It's the same, just in a compressed form.
8. DARQ. It's alright I guess.
9. Hellpoint. It has some ideas, I give them that. Just not all of the ideas are good.
10. Hellpoint: Blue Sun. Decent areas but everything's too damn dark.
11. The Last Campfire. Cozy but a little sad.
12. Eternal Threads. Underwhelming.
13. Ittle Dew 2+. Delightful with some devious puzzles.

17. Little Nightmares II (Steam) - Super creepy puzzle platformer with a friend. Unmatched ambience in the genre but sometimes it's a little unclear what to do next. ★★★★ 1/2 (10.2 Hours)

18. Assemble With Care (Steam) - Story heavy puzzle game about fixing various items and contraptions. Lovely but way too short. Great idea for a puzzle game but feels underutilised. ★★★ (76 minutes)

19. Surviving Mars (Steam) - Made Mars green, blue and breathable. Individual games are very long so one completion is enough. Mostly works like on the box but bots game be a bit annoying at times. ★★★ 1/2 (62.7 Hours overall)

20 Resident Evil VII (Steam) - First Resident Evil I've ever played through. It was fine, a bit annoying at times but fun enough romp. ★★★ 1/2 (9.1 Hours)

21. Death Stranding Director's Cut (Steam) - Some pretty pointless additions 2bh, best one was the shortcut road through the mountains instead of going around. Same cool game. Didn'1 100% this time. ★★★★ 1/2 (70.5 Hours)

2022

Scorn - Ultimately, I liked it quite a lot. I recall being pissed because I felt the checkpoint/auto save system screwed me over at the beginning of the game. I was low on health in a spot that had tougher enemies blocking my path and the only weapon I had to help me overcome the obstacle was the dumb as shit melee gun you start of with since I thought I didn't have ammo for the other gun I had secured earlier. It wasn't until I watched a video on youtube that I came to realize that I had ammo for the other gun... I just had to manually reload the gun before using it. I was so used to games holding me hand that it didn't occur to me that you have to manually reload the first weapon you get that shoots projectiles. Anyway, I was really happy experiencing this game when I was done and felt people were a bit too hard on it when it was released (including myself).

A Plague Tale: Requiem - This was my 2022 GOTY. It improved on the game play in the original in every way. It was less punishing, but still challenging and fun.

Somerville - Very underwhelming puzzle game. It tries telling a story without any spoken words or text but fails to succeed in doing so. I recall it being very buggy too. Not fun.

2023

High on Life - Not the biggest fan of characters talking throughout a game with few exceptions, but the banter with the guns and NPCs in this game is a highlight. The humor didn't make me "laugh out loud," but I found a lot of it pretty amusing and clever. Game play was fun too.

Dead Space (XBOX 360 BC) - For whatever reason I never purchased this game when the IP was flourishing during the 360/PS3 era, and I had never played my Steam copy of the game. Finally decided to check it before the release of the remake and I was impressed by how well the game still holds up. It still looks really good and it was a lot of fun to play through. I now understand why people feel it's a classic.

Gungrave G.O.R.E - It's a sequel to two PS2 games I had never played. Not sure why I punished myself trying to complete this game. It's a very janky melee + run and gun shooter that still feels like it's from the PS2 era.

Atomic Heart - This game pissed me off because I both loved it and found is frustrating to play. I enjoyed the game play and story (although the dialogue was cringe), but I have never played a buggier game in my life. I'm not exaggerating when I say that I had to reboot the game like 25+ times by the end of my play through. I was constantly getting stuck in the environment. I don't know if things have changed by now, but it was very buggy when it was released. If I had paid $60 for it I would have been pissed.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty - Loved it. I love souls-likes (my favorite style of game). The story wasn't that great, PVP isn't that good, and the art could have been less generic, but I had a blast playing through this game because of the tight combat. It's a game pass gem. I'll pick up a physical copy once it drops in price and leaves game pass.

Like a Dragon: Ishin! - Loved it. Kind of a slog early on though... I just felt the sub stories were lacking humor-wise compared to the funnier ones I played in Like a Dragon and Kiwami 1 which are the other Yakuza games I have played so far. I had around 90% of the sub stories done before I decided to start advancing the main story and that's when I started enjoying the game more. The Shinsengumi dungeons were fun. Anyway, by the end of the game I had a more positive feeling towards my time with the game than I did early one when it wasn't clicking with me that well. I'm glad they brought this game over. I prefer the modern setting for these games, but I would still like a remake of Kenzan.

22. Redfall (PC Gamepass) - Nice looking boring empty world with very little to do. Near 100%'ed in less than 20 hours. Decent shooting, forgettable story and mechanics. ★★ (19.7 Hours)

23. Dead Rising 3 (Steam) - Fun zombie murder sim without the main series protagonist. Huge weapon and vehicle variation and a decent story without the punishing time limits. ★★★★ (27.6 Hours)

24. Builder Simulator (Steam) - Decent sim game, You could probably use it to build some really fun stuff. Finished the contracts/achievements. Took me way to long to release you could automate the cement/mortar process! ★★★ (10 Hours)

25. Dead Rising 4 (Steam) - Frank's back baby! More interesting world with less weapon/vehicle variation. Thankfully no silly time limits as well! ★★★★ (29.1 Hours)

26. Planet of Lana (Steam) - Beautiful 2d puzzle platformer about an alien invasion. Could possibly use a few more puzzles but the experience is top notch. ★★★★1/2 (5 Hours)

14, Dreamland Solitaire: Dragon's Fury. More solitaire.
15, Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout. It's alright.
16, Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout DLC Episodes. Thin on content.
17, Little Nemo: The Dream Master. More difficult than I remembered.
18, Paradise Lost. It has some good ideas for a story, but everything around it is kind of bad.

20, Puzzle Box Palace. Short student game, it's neat.
21, Frame of Mind. Neat, very Antichamber like.

27. Destiny 2 - Beyond Light (Steam) - Not entirely sure what the story was about, destiny is pretty nonsensical nowadays. Introduces a new power set, stasis or dark light. Same stuff different location. ★★★ (some number of hours)

28, Warhammer 40k - Chaosgate (steam) - Great xcom-like set in the 40k universe. Fly around a part of the universe stopping demon outbreaks, interesting loot system and choices can result in long term limits. Surprisingly story heavy with quite long, nearing FF levels, cut scenes. ★★★★ (34 Hours)

29. Miasma Chronicles (steam) - From the same devs as Mutant chronicles featuring a lot of the same design elements. Interesting story but somehow feels a little familiar like a reskin of their first game. Also short for the very high price ★★ 1/2 (16 Hours)

30. Aliens Dark Descent (Steam) - Punishes mistakes but with unmatched tension. A little buggy but brilliant. ★★★★ 1/2 (34 Hours)

31. Hard West II (Steam) - Improves on the first in many ways, concentrates on one group/story. Verges on part puzzle game as you work out how to kill as many enemies per turn before being overwhelmed as a kill returns all your action points. ★★★★ (24 hours)

32. Dead Island 2 (Let's pretend it was on Epic) - Surprising good, runs well, fun characters. Not completely open world, a series of smaller areas and weird progression. You can't even do half the side content until you are like 22 or 23 of 24 main quests completed. ★★★★ (30 hours)

34. Toy Tinker Simulator (Steam) - Standard job sim clickfest. Strangely compelling for a while until it isn't. ★★ 1/2 (5.2 Hours)

35. Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem (PC Gamepass) - No game matches the mayhem of a SS game. Vast swathes of enemies screaming at you. Great sound design. Short stand alone DLC. ★★★★ (4,4 Hours)

36. Cocoon (PC Gamepass) - Beautiful puzzle game. The game throws you in the deep end, you are born and that is about all the information you get. Manipulate worlds within worlds to solve multi-dimensional puzzles. ★★★★ 1/2 (5 hours)

37. Starfield (PC Gamepass) - Buggy, empty and cardboard characters but strangely compelling. Most of the game is spend in menus or transitioning planets, ships, building etc... ★★★ 1/2 (244 hours! Maybe an overestimate)

38. Toby: The Secret Mine (Steam) - Decent short Limbo clone, controls and geometry a little wonky at times. ★★★ (2 Hours)

39. Ratchet & Clank: A Rift Apart (PS5) - The tech is little overrated but the game is a fun Ratchet and Clank like always. Pretty Short ★★★ (13 Hours)

40. New Tales from the Borderlands (Steam) - A shadow of the first, fun enough, but the main characters are less interesting than the side characters. Does seem to set up something for the future of borderlands lore but I never paid enough to the story to know what it was about. Bugged out and didn't close a few times. ★★★1/2 (18 Hours)

41. The Forest Quartet (Epic) - First epic freebie I've played. Good, but very short, little light story based puzzle game. Epic achievements were bugged as well. ★★★★ (1.5 hours)

42. Sable (Steam) - Interesting adventure game about discovering one's path in life. Play as much or as little to work out your future. Game was super buggy and ran like trash though. ★★★ (13 Hours)

43. Jusant (PC Gamepass) - Super Chill climbing adventure game. In a world devoid of water, discover what has been left behind. Very, very French. ★★★★1/2 (4.5 Hours)

46. Somerville (PC Gamepass) - Survive an Alien invasion. Fantastic style and sound, story is confusing and there is not enough dog. ★★★1/2 (7 hours)

47. Deliver Us Mars (Epic) - Improved story and characterisation from the first. Great design and music, jumping while climbing pretty broken. Achievements broken on epic as well ★★★★ (15 Hours)
