I wasn't sure if we were meant to make regular posts about what we've completed but it seems that's fine? I've just been editing mine in so far.

My #11 and #12 were the first games in the Crash and Spyro remastered trilogies. I went into these having not played the originals (or if I did it was very minimal). I'm absolutely amazed that Crash had that much of a following with how absolutely terrible that first game was. In comparison Spyro was a breath of fresh air. And my original thought was I'd bounce back and forth and use each series as a palette cleanser to the other so I wouldn't feel tired of one series toward the end of the trilogy. I'm sort worried about returning to Crash 2 and honestly I think I just need something else entirely that's not a simple platformer before I return to the middle children of these series.

No grand plans, just keeping track of games I beat this year and giving them score.

Games completed in 2019:
1. Nioh: Complete Edition / 仁王 Complete Edition - 11/10

Evolution of the Ninja Gaiden games, Dark Souls level of tension and difficulty. Only the brave can truly appreciate this Sengoku Action game.

2, RESIDENT EVIL 2 / BIOHAZARD RE:2 - 8/10

While not a fan of horror games, RE2RE has infected everyone around and got me in to the mood to play it too, and I ended up loving it. Survival Horror at its finest.

3. Diablo 1 - 7/10

Enjoyable old gem, that while showing its age, still has the charm to keep you going until you finally beat the Dark Lord himself.

4. Sekiro™: Shadows Die Twice - ??/10

Game so good it becomes incredibly hard to give it a score. You've probably heard about it, yeah, it's hard, yeah, it's good, even one of the best games ever made, so you should play it. Just prepare to die more than twice.

5. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night - 9/10

Finally a worthy successor to SOTN. Koji Igarashi breaks the curse of JPN Kickstarter games and delivers on every possible front with this Action-packed Exploration RPG. Iga is back!

6. Detroit: Become Human - 7½/10

Interactive movie video game by David Cage. The game has some brilliant moments, but is dragged down by 2 of main characters. If this game was all about future Robocop AKA Connor, the score would be lot higher.

7. Remnant: From the Ashes - 9/10

Great Souls-inspired 3rd Person Shooter RPG. Every weapon is a joy to use, they've managed to nail the gunplay perfectly. Loads of different builds to use and experiment with, sleeper hit of the year!

8. Control - 7½/10

While it doesn't reach the heights Alan Wake did, it certainly holds up and is fresh in it's own way. Not enough variety is the biggest issue, which might or might not be fixed with the post-launch DLCs.

9. CODE VEIN - 10/10

Souls-like with more traditional JRPG storytelling and interesting ways to create your own builds and character. If you like Souls-likes or Anime, this one's for you, do not miss it.

10. The Outer Worlds - 6/10

After all is said and done, the game falls flat and could have used several months in development. Glaring difficulty issues aside, the asset rehash and lack of variety the game offers just doesn't feel fulfilling on any level and teasing planets you cannot access on map screen is not okay, possibly future DLC. Even the main story quest is mostly on sidelines until the last hour of the game where it suddenly picks up but fails to leave impression.

11. Death Stranding - 9½/10

Hideo Kojima redeeming himself after that disgrace of a game called MGSV. One of a type game, you either love or hate, definitely worth trying out.

12. STAR WARS Jedi: Fallen Order™ - 9½/10

Most impressive take at Souls-like, combining it with Uncharted. Lacking in little bit of polish but not to detriment the enjoyment of the game, for their first try at the genre, I have high hopes for future. A must play for all Star Wars fans and people who liked Sekiro combat, though this is fair bit easier than that.

13. Half-Life 2: Episode One - 8/10

Inspired by Alyx reveal I decided to buy Episode One and Two. Guess there's not much to say about this game since almost everyone has probably played it at this point so I'm late to it. It was solid, bite-sized FPS. Doesn't reach the same heights as HL1 or HL2 but it was fun going through it.

We're two weeks into the new year and I racked up 45 hours in Siege already.

:wd_hot:

Uh. Tomorrow I'm gonna ban myself from Siege and play something else. I gotta get through JJ Macfield: The Missing. It was gifted to me and I'm starting to feel like poop for not beating it yet.

Also wanna finish AC: Odyssey in Jan. 100 hours in, left off in Ch.7... Pretty close to the end I think, just gotta stop being obsessive about side content.

1. Chrono Trigger
Finally finished this one. It was a hold over from last month, which is when I first beat the game. This month, I was just getting all the other achievements, which was much more tedious than I expected, although I did make it harder for myself by not realizing I could perma-kill the first phase of Lavos, so I fought him like 8-9 more times than I had to. New game+ was neat in that I basically steam rolled everything and went through the story so quickly. I appreciated how few forced encounters there were; a lot of the time, it felt like it was my fault that I stepped into one. Although I liked the original content, the DS additions were so bad that they made me hate the game for a while. I probably took so long to finish this because of them. Fuck that sidequest village. The DS ending also seemed really out of character for both Magus and Schala, it was kind of jarring. Speaking of which, is Frog Marle's ancestor? Since in that one ending, she turns into a frog, and there was that whole plot point of removing her ancestor temporarily erasing her existence. Then again, there was that dinosaur ending, so maybe none of those extra endings really matter.

Anyway, in all, it was pretty fun. I heard Chrono Cross was a bad sequel to it, but the same people apparently went on to make Baten Kaitos, which is my favorite game, so I think I'll have to check it out regardless.

I know the theme of the game is that you only have a minute to do anything, but that was shorter than I expected lol. Not that that's a bad thing, but playing in the mode where you don't have a timer puts into perspective how small the world is. Makes you realize how much the time limit really does mitigate that. The puzzles were pretty neat, although I did get stuck a couple of times. At one point, I thought I soft locked myself, but I just didn't see the intended route I was supposed to take. The game does some pretty clever things at times though, like being able to skip the boss in the second run, because you can just flush your broken sword in the toilet as soon as you get to the factory. I also appreciated the Link's Awakening vibes I got from it, what with the item switching and cutting down bushes and so on. Definitely tugged on my nostalgia a little there.

I definitely recommend it, as long as its length isn't an issue for you. Took me about 4-5 hours to complete it. Also someone tell me what the vegan option in the main menu does, because I forgot to try it out and already uninstalled it.

Oh that's pretty neat. I thought it was something to do with the bull, since you kill it for a heart.

3. Delete
The lovechild between Minesweeper and Hexcells in a way. All of the mechanics and twists were really clever, and it felt satisfying to pick each puzzle apart. My only issue is that sometimes I felt like I just had to guess, like there was no actual hint to the correct answer. For example, having two covered tiles right next to each other, with all the surrounding tiles and the total mine counter saying there's only one left. I'd only have a 50/50 shot of getting it right. I had that situation happen to me on my last chance for a puzzle, and so I had to restart the whole thing when I guessed wrong, even though that was the last tile I had to solve to finish it. :pensive-face:

Other than that, it's really good. If you're a fan of Hexcells, you should check it out. It's super cheap on Steam.

Game #3: Subnautica (35 hours)

Excellent game. I'm not really the biggest fan of open-ended "do you what you want" survival games, but I loved Subnautica. Perhaps because it has a story and a clear end-goal to work towards :p And you clan play witohut Hunger and Thirst.
Also the world is just super interesting and atmospheric.

4. Pikuniku (~3 hours)

Really enjoyable quirky little puzzle/platformer/adventure game. It feels a bit similar to Wuppo (which is also a great game btw).
Definitely haven't found all the optional side stuff though.
And it looks like it has a local co-op mode that has entirely different levels than the adventure mode.

I updated my post last night with the final Spyro game so I have completed all six games in both the Crash Bandicoot and Spyro trilogies. I got a Playstation late, with the PS2 already out, so I played a lot of catch up having only played a handful of PS1 games up to that point so when I began buying all my own stuff I was focused more on RPGs and never tried the Crash or Spyro games.

Well, it was definitely a bumpy road but it smoothed out over time. Crash Bandicoot was absolutely terrible and I can't really fathom how it sold so well and got fans. The two sequels both improve upon the prior game with the third one as my favorite, but also was the easiest. I don't think it was the level design specifically that made it easier but they just got closer to having a good feel of movement and better collision so you didn't make jumps but slide off the edge somehow.

Spyro started better than Crash with the second game not being a huge improvement, but still a better game. And I'm torn on the third game. Ultimately I'd say it's the best of the three but it also has more misfires in some of the side activities since it ups the amount of variety in its mission structure.

Overall I'd say Crash 3 was my favorite of all six and Crash 1 was my least favorite.

And I'm glad to be done so I can play something different and better as none of these games, in today's gaming, are great games. They're good and fun but I'm ready for something else.

Pretty good point and click game. The story is really good with some deep implications that I found amazing.

Gameplay is fun and save for a few difficult (for me) puzzles, it was really enjoyable :coffee-blob:

Game #8 Done - Gris - Beautiful puzzle platformer. Stunning hand-drawn visuals and music.

Game #9 Done - Spider-Man (PS4) - Took me a while to get into but great fun and impressive storytelling. Way too many villains subjected to bit parts though.

Pretty much done with Resident Evil 2 so added it to my list, only bit more to go with Leon B.
Have to admit little dissapointed at the A/B side aspect, people hyped it up like I would miss half of the game if you don't play the other side but it's mostly the same.

1. Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown | PS4 | January 30th | ★★★★½

Everything I expect from a Strangereal Ace Combat is here: Solid map variety; good objective gimmicks; gorgeously rendered planes; gigantic set-piece battles; the usual "rookie-to-ace" storyline (but subverted a bit); great callbacks to previous games' stories and characters; lovely OST; and fun multiplayer. It does have a few problems, notably with its insane difficulty spikes and terrible checkpoint system that probably keep it from being an all-time great for me. Otherwise though, it's great, and I hope the wait for the next Strangereal game is much shorter.

NB: If you get the game, use expert controls, it's how the game is meant to be played. They're more logical and smooth for controlling a plane in a truly three-dimensional skyspace, whereas the novice/default controls are terrible and at least partially responsible for why the game got dinged in some reviews for its controls.

Main post.

Reporting in for January:
This month was spent mainly playing Warframe and reading visual novels, but I also played a number of other games, most of which are still in progress.

1. Hustle Cat (7½ hours)

A original English visual novel about cats, magic, and dating your cute co-workers. Somewhat inconsistently written, but still an throughly enjoyable read.

2. Crystal Chameleon (1 hour)

Another original English visual novel, with an interesting setting, that unfortunately fails to make use of that setting and ends just as it was getting started.

3. The Leisure of Grisaia (½ hour)

A short interlude between the visual novels 'The Fruit of Grisaia' and 'The Labyrinth of Grisaia'. It consists of a few short sketches, but nothing that I found noteworthy. You could skip it entirely, and not miss out on anything.

4. GRIS (3½ hours)

A hauntingly beautiful puzzle-platformer. Highly recommended

5. ISLANDS: Non-Places (45 minutes)

Not so much a game as an interactive art exhibit. It was quite interesting, and at times quite amusing, but did suffer from some inconsistently indicated active regions, which at times meant clicking at random trying to "progress".

6. Momodora: Reverie Under The Moonlight (4 hours)

A simple pixel-art metroidvania with highly polished game-play. Highly recommended for fans of the genre.

7. Kindred Spirits on the Roof - Full Chorus (20 hours)

Two lesbian ghosts rope the protagonist into playing cupid for other lesbian pairs. A warm, fluffy visual novel about love, that left me smiling almost the entire time I was reading it. The "full chorus" DLC adds voices to the entire novel, as opposed the partial voices of the original release.

Finished KH3 at 42 Hours

It's honestly impossible to give any real impressions about this game without spoiling things, the entire game is a single Climax, similar to MGS4 or the anime End of Evangelion.

It's got some fairly objective flaws like the combat being too easy or it not having a lot of side content, but it's incredibly fun and some of the things it's doing and the way it's wrapping up the story is c'est magnifique. It's one of those things that's greater than the sum of its part.

There's one moment specifically i really wish i could talk about more openly but can't due to spoilers, but man, that was so good.

The current state of SE made me worry a bit about this game, but between N:A and KH3, maybe it's just the Final Fantasy brand that is cursed.

Gonna play RE2 or AC7 next, not sure yet.

2. Kingdom Hearts 1 Final Mix | PS4 | January 31st | Abandoned

This game is now going to be the poster child to me of "take care revisiting your childhood." I remember loving this game when I first got it back around 2003, and being obsessed over every little detail: The costumes, the gameplay, the music, the worlds, the Final Fantasy characters (who I was unfamiliar with then), everything about it was amazing to me. But coming back to it almost 16 years later it feels like this entire game. outside of a few flashy FMV/CGI scenes and the music, has aged about as well as a carton of milk from 2002 would have. The voice-acting hadn't grown into itself; the world layout is unintuitive and frustrating to navigate; the gameplay feels slow and floaty; the character animation is 100% born out of that era; the writing hasn't gotten interesting yet (this is pretty much the first and only time the KH story was truly comprehensible to a layman). Anyways, I gave it an hour or two, and gave up. I've heard people say it gets better in ten or so hours, but honestly, I'm not waiting that long for games to "get good" at this point in my life.

This game also inspired me to use this thread as a backlog clearing thread, rather than a strict completion challenge. I don't have enough time to blow finishing games I'm not enjoying, so just playing games for a half-hour, hour, whatever, and realizing they're not for me is worthwhile.

-KLAUS- is the sixth game I've finished in 2019

Started: 02/02/2019

It's a challenging platform where you control not only Klaus but also some parts of the environment. The protagonist also acknowledge you as the player and talks to you as you help him progress trough the levels. The narrative is a strong point of the game and I enjoyed it so much I decided to replay it and get the last bit of memory that I was missing.

3. Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories | PS4 | February 1st | Abandoned

Lol, no. I bounced off of this even faster than I bounced off of KH1:FM. Again, I had really fond memories of this from back when it was a GBA game that I played as a kid, but trying this remade version made me want to smash my head into a wall repeatedly. It is very, very, very not good. At least it's another thing checked off my backlog, so that's worth something I guess. :pensive-face:

4. Megaquarium | Steam | February 4th | ★★★½

I've been playing this game on and off since the Winter Sale, and I generally had a pretty good time doing so. To be honest, there's nothing too fancy here if you're a simulation fanatic. You're managing an aquarium, but everything is very, very, very linear in terms of tycoon/strategy management. Upgrades scale straight upwards, whether it's in terms of aquarium amenities, decorations, species types, etc. E.g., whereas in a proper tycoon game, you might be forced to keep some of your early specimens to satisfy guests who like that type of animal, or be forced to keep a certain food even when a more profitable one is unlocked to satisfy guests whose favorite is that less profitable food, that doesn't really occur here. When a better fish/food/decoration gets unlocked, you can usually phase out the earlier type without too much worry (except in campaign missions with special limitations). The dev has talked about implementing a system like that (guest favorites) to force you to diversify your aquarium, but nothing seems to have happened on that front yet.

Which is fine, because this was something mostly chill for me to play while listening to a podcast or something else. There isn't really much else out there in the way of "attraction management" games beyond zoo and roller coaster games, so hopefully this game is successful and inspires more development in similar but different "attraction management."

I finished the last game in Quell series and here I my thoughts on the matter. Quell games are great: they are beautiful, with calm music and in general very zen puzzle games. But! and there is always but, even with those added mechanics there is just so much you can do with sliding games. Sooner or later you cross the line *this is ridiculously complex and takes too long*, and unfortunately Zen crossed that line several times, 58 moves 4 drops puzzle is a killer, granted you still can solve it, but do you want to? That is a question. Good bye my precious, not sure we will see each other again.
Still, I very much recommend all series.

Feels good to have my first "big" game of 2019 finally beat. And it didn't really take too long either considering the delayed release of the PC version of AC7.

Even though I beat it, can't say I'm done with it just yet! Wanna go back and get some achievements, plus since I got the deluxe edition I have the season pass... Gotta wait for DLC!

Gosh, going back to AC Odyssey is gonna feel so boring in comparison I feel like. Can't give up though. So close to the end... o_O
