VR is too expensive!

*proceeds to buy Xbox4 and PS5 on release date, complete with several games and online subscriptions, probably surpassing the cost of the cheapest VR and a decent PC.

I mean people are allowed to dislike VR but at least be congruent lol
I couldn't disagree more with this post. Unless the world ends with US, prices of consoles can't always be compared to VR headsets and required paraphernalia. In a country where there's no official VR presence and no shipments from Valve, having to pay $2000 for an Index from third party sellers is reason enough to complain. PS5 will probably be much cheaper to find here, and if it isn't, I'll be complaining about it too.

Valve's VR isn't the only hardware. shop around. Only like 10% of PC VR users have it iirc. Edit: nope, closer to 5%. It's new, it's premium, of limited availability, yes.

It all depends on the value proposition. That ps5 will get me through a generation and who knows how many games, same can be said for buying a new cpu and expensive ass gpu. I haven't bought a VR set yet, at any price, because I can't justify spending hundreds when I see nothing I want to play on it. That is why even at $400 it's "too expensive" to me.

If you're replying to my post, alternatives aren't cheap here either. If I'm going to spend that much money, I wanna go with the best.

I think those complaining about people complaining about VR aren't taking into account the variety of situations and personal/country economies. It may be cheap or accessible to you, and that's great, but your situation doesn't apply to everyone. I'm not even mad that HL:A is a VR-only game; I just ask for understanding regarding my (and other people's) personal situation, instead of broad generalizations that only really apply to select privileged countries.

Well , if the primary objection is "I see nothing I want to play on it", then there are really only two options regarding HL:A:
  • You don't want to play it, and then it doesn't really matter since you also don't need VR to not play it ;)
  • You do want to play it, and then you see something you want to play on it
So no problem either way really!

I didn't tell you to go out and buy shit you don't want, I just suggested a solution to the problem you mentioned, Index's limited availability. Now you say you don't want to settle for anything other than Index, well, that's your choice too, but that's the situation and it's a premium product even where it is available so I don't see why, if you can't afford premium products, much like myself, you also refuse to look into potentially more affordable solutions, but you do you, no solution to that, it's not a problem but a choice to decide to not get anything after all, nobody's going to force you to get it or complain you're not getting it, no.

Not that I disagree with you but unless I’m misremembering, Half Life has always pushed for more than what’s currently common on the PC space. I think HL2 asked for 2GB RAM, which was fucking insane back in 2003/2004. That’s the cost of ground breaking technology I suppose.

But that can be said about anything. There’s a lot of people who sold their gaming devices because they didnt find the value even if there’s a lot to play on them.

Yeah, that's true. I'm annoyed at not being able to import one for a reasonable price, since the game will probably be amazing, and a great showcase for VR. Which only makes me want it more haha.

I know, and I didn't mean it that way. I was referring to the comparisons to next gen consoles, since they have been used as arguments to dismiss criticism about VR.

Yeah, the Valve Index would set me back 20,000 MXN plus importing fees which is ridiculous.

either way, my post was aimed to the dumb shit Jason Schreirer posts regarding Valve and Steam. Its like he always tries to give everything Valve a negative spin.

Yea there is only 3 VR games I really want to play right now. Games that I wouldn't hesitate to buy the second I get a headset.

Half-Life, No Mans Sky and Boneworks. And maybe Elite Dangerous as a distant fourth.

Its really tough to justify a 400$+ purchase because I will beat those games in few weeks time. And I do plan on picking up a headset in time for HLVR but then what? I am not a fan of racing games or walking horror style stuff in the VR space right now that lots of other people like.

I kind of wish there was another half dozen games in pipeline from prominent devs that I like. Like KojiPro, FromSoft, Obsidian or even Larian. It would make the decision right now so much easier.

Maybe HLVR can turn the tables and lots of people buy headsets thus forcing many devs to release more vr games next gen. But its unlikely and even if you do see someone like KojiPro decide to do a VR game next it will most likely be partnered with Playstation.

I thought valve is locking their most iconic franchise behind VR tech to move the medium forward with the latest and greatest VR tech, the most premium.

Please. You'll boost VR no matter fucking what, I mean do you own stock in a VR company or something? Its money, its space, its complexity, its worries about spending $500 or more on something that may make you ill.

Lol wth is this

You do want to play it but can't afford, don't have the space, don't have the experience, don't have access to the required hardware...

Stop acting like a child, I wish you did block me if that's the level of discourse you can muster, where did I say any of those things for you to respond to me in that manner? I've always maintained PC VR has reached a great consumer oriented standard whether you buy a $200 or a $1000 set (indeed, as long as it works for you, there are things to consider like IPD, I also never said to blindly buy anything just because it has VR in the product description), just like a $10 mouse will let you play the same games a $100 mouse does and a $100 monitor will play the same games a $1000 monitor will, that doesn't change the core benefits of a mouse or a monitor just because some people can splurge on better stuff. In fact the monitor comparison is quite good because yes, more expensive VR kits tend to have higher resolution, fov and other things but it's not something that limits playability in a grand way if you can't afford a 4K monitor and it's not something that affects the software design in order to support your lower res monitor as long as you still play it on a gaming PC that meets the minimum requirements, while indeed, game design for VR and not for VR can be too different in order to be able to accommodate both with a single product yet the same VR game will work on a WMR set, an Oculus set and an Index set and a Pimax and whatever. Obviously there are probably some products out there that aren't quite compatible, hence you always research into what you want to buy rather than blindly angrily argue on the internet with no thought or care.

You have no idea what features half life alyx will require and know you don't know that the $200 set will be ok.

Also you ignore OTHER valid reasons I brought up.

Blocking you would've been childish, so I didn't. I responded because of how hostile you were being to the other poster who brought up their problems with VR.

Those are different concerns from "I see nothing I want to play on it".
The point I'm making is that you can't argue both that you see nothing you want to play on it and that you are disconcerted because you cannot play it. (Note that I'm not saying anyone here did that, but it's not an uncommon contradiction overall)

Not being able to afford it or not having some other requirement are legitimate reasons to be disappointed, but they are not, in my opinion, reasons which justify the reactions from some people.
From time to time a first-party game I want to play might release exclusively on a console, which means I can't play it. However, I don't go out there and complain about that company making exclusives for their own console (note: this is different from paying for exclusivity periods of third party products).

And honestly, to me, "VR exclusivity" (as in, exclusively VR, not exclusive to any particular VR HW) has a lot more inherent value and justification than other types of hardware or software exclusivity we commonly see in gaming. Because VR is really a different mode of interaction. They didn't just decide for the heck of it (or due to a huge payment) to limit access to the game -- they are making a game in a new medium, and this is the only way to do it.

Well announcing it and then not doing it is also childish and you did that. You responded to me with irrelevant things as I was talking to another person, now I'm obliged to respond to everything? I never told you to buy something you can't afford and never suggested that so what do you want me to say to those "other reasons" other than, yes, you kind sir shouldn't personally spend on VR. as if I ever said that you should? And no, we haven't seen the game, if that's all the argument you can fall back to why say anything before you see it too, lol? I was talking with other people about VR in general, not just HL:A. A console or PC you buy or whatever you buy isn't guaranteed to get every game ever you might want (case in point, Half-Life: Alyx) either hence, again, especially when you're relatively poor like me, you research a lot before every purchase to make it count the most it possibly can. Nowhere did anyone argue against any such behavior, the fuck do you want from me other than to use me as your punching bag for things like fanboy, VR developer, or stock holder, paid off shill, etc.?

You don't have to respond to shit.

It seems like to me you want people to stop complaining about VR exclusivity. You can start a ban thread on me if you want me to stop complaining.

And finally, we've never had a major exclusive to PC VR platform and it kinda sucks that its HL. Its hard to prep for what equipment I'd need if it is the first meaningful exclusive.

I don't want fucking anything from you, except maybe for you to stop editing your posts so I don't end up responding to something you deleted or ignore a point.

Complain away, what "seems" to you or not about me makes no difference to me. I don't care to start whatever crap that is you drop on you, I'll just call you out when you're being an asshole to me personally with unfounded misleading non arguments that do nothing to further discussion that you clearly have no interest in generating over insulting others who don't see eye to eye as shills and fanboys and stock holders and other random bullshit. You want me to be sorry I like VR, you want me to be sorry I'm finally excited about gaming shit as I was back when I first got into it and talk about it and try to point out solutions when people present problems like availability and potential cost, whatever, I'm not here to entertain or agree with you, nor have I tried to force you into anything. I like PC VR and have been the sole poster of trailers and screenshots and mostly software news in the VR thread and now you come here to tell me I'm trying to sell the Index or whatever product I don't even have just cos I participated in relevant discussion when they popped up and gave my opinion? Whatever man.

I feel the annoyance comes down to people with VR headset being very excited for HLA and then people who won't get a VR headset for various reasons talking VR down. It's annoying. I get it. Some people find it dissapointing, but people just gotta move on. There's no point in continously saying something sucks or is dissapointed. 1 time is enough.

I remember when Bayo 2 was announced as Nintendo exclusive. I wrote "Well shit, that's dissapointing" and moved on.

I never said you tried to force me into shit, you have fucking tried to put any frustrations and annoyance with valve on my part as a "personal problem" of mine and therefore not valid. Sometimes not everything has a solution and if your solution gets rejected, let it go.

I hate this "CALL OUT!!!!" shit, who the fuck talks like that?

I haven't ever really cared for Valve's games so I don't imagine tomorrow will do anything for me. But that's not VR related, just that I never got into their games.

Yeah. Half-Life: Alyx will be SteamVR exclusive. It's exciting for some. Dissapointing for some. That's it. Move on. I assume the HLA thread here will mostly be used to discuss the game when unveiled tommorrow.

I think it's best if we just move this HLA discussion to the thread and let people who are interested it it talk about it there. So no more talk about HLA here and VR talk is in the VR thread.

Yes, it's dissapointing for some, but you just gotta move on if you won't get a VR headset.

Even Portal?
(I'm actually not a huge fan of HL myself, I'm far more excited for HL:A due to the "VR flagship" aspect than the "HL" aspect)
Portal 2's probably the game I enjoyed the most from them but I'm not really a big puzzle guy so I wouldn't say I loved the game. It was fine, just not something I spent a lot of time with after I finished it. Valve and Blizzard (besides WoW) were always companies that were massive on PC but just never really did much for me. I do like strategy games, but not the type Blizzard made with warcraft and starcraft. I'm more into paradox stuff and total war.

An Epic free weekend is just Tim paying for your copy. Have they figured out how to revoke licenses yet? I know they can make things you own disappear for no reason.

Is it weird that I'm extra excited for this Half-Life game because I have that friends and family sub? I really like free stuff. It's a problem. I've also been waiting a very long time for it to be used (I kinda ignored artifact).

So I've played for 15 hours now. There is 4acts. Im coming to end of first act. I've only just unlocked my home camp This is a massive system that let's you build anything and u can go out in world n form pacts with people monsters etc to help craft buildings at base from chicken hens to blacksmiths etc. When u have enough builders n materials to build something you then complete a lil mini game to build. ( chicken pen for instance involved helping a guy saw wood n stuff just some added fun) U then get workers at them places you build too. There's a fishing lake in this place and system is u fish in other places in gane n bring ur stuff back to ur lake to harvest easier.

Don't think you're supposed to do anything after finishing the Portal games, unless you wanna check out some of the better fan levels and stuff. It's not a replayable game, you already know the solutions that are fun to figure out the first time and everything after all. So you played it like most people, lol :)

You are free to talk about the game, just leave the complaints that it is VR only out of it.
